the outer gate
"Open up, and let them in."

The Moira is no more.

With the damage done to the ship due to the timeslip, all that remains is a burning wreckage and parts to be taken—if the crew can find anything in the pieces. Recovery and headcounts are the main objective for the first several hours of being planetside, and once things have settled just enough, Captain Ira calls for a meeting and addresses those who are able in person to explain the situation. He draws a rough map of the area and explains where he believes they are - according to the terrain - and where they must go. For anyone who’s listening, he describes things like an “Outer Gate”, an “Inner Gate” and “gate sectors”. Believing this to be the best course of action, all crew are asked to explore and gather what they think they’ll need to make the long journey towards the central point of the Hub. Because the MIDs are no longer working due to the lack of a network, the Captains distribute a newer tech called the TAB. It serves the same functions as the MID but is lighter, slimmer, and has the ability to stick to any surface.

WELCOME TO THE MIDWAY HUB

Now that the smoke from the crash has cleared, and injured crew have been tended to, the Captains get everyone ready for departure by explaining what they know of the Hub. Almost stone-like, the creators built a domed workspace in the largest solid space on the planet they could find. Gates are the only way inside, and anyone who catches a glimpse of the compound will see that parts of the dome are cracked. Yet, everything still appears to be relatively intact. The Midway Hub’s terrain is very rocky and difficult to walk on at times. Below the surface is a honeycomb of intermittently dense and brittle stone that makes travel difficult due to the unpredictable nature of what lies beneath the crew’s feet. Those who can develop the tech from what’s left of the debris might be able to create something to determine which route is the safest. Ships and small crafts can be used to fly, but landing is a problem—rocks jut up in sharp peaks and the clearer spots can't handle their weight. Vegetation is sparse, consisting of twisted dark gray thistles that have sprung up from cracks in the rock and burn when in direct contact with skin, and what could be considered small animals here can be seen scurrying away the closer crew get to them.

WEEK ONE
Crew are asked to hook cryo beds together and to use any appropriate vehicles that can be made or fashioned to fit the terrain to carry injured crew on the journey to the center of the Hub. Supplies are gathered, and the Captains, as well as any crew who want to, give the Moira a proper sendoff, heads bowed as they say goodbye to what’s been their home. Traveling starts out slowly, a line of a hundred-plus crew members making their way slowly forward. Stops are frequent, but camping for rest only occurs at night. Crew are assigned watch shifts, fires are built, injured tended to, and those who are able are asked to explore nearby caves and hunt for food.

Something akin to deer, though striped and only to be found in pairs, can be stumbled across at night. Throngs of dark purple mammels begin to follow the Moirans on their trip as well. They are friendly, curious, and eat the thistle. Meet the intelligent, watchful predators that aren’t easily scared away and follow the crew from a distance as if waiting to pounce. The thistle can be eaten, but only if cooked first, and those who sample the chewy plant raw will experience a burning sensation in their throat that doesn’t go away until the cooked version is consumed. During the first week, water can’t be found.

Anyone who does hunt, gather, or explore should make sure to that their TABS are on and it’s suggested that nobody goes alone.

Nearing the end of the first week, an Ingress can be spotted close by that crew can explore. If anyone dares to go inside, they will find the texture of the ground and surrounding walls to be rather soft. If inspected closely, crew will discover that what they originally thought to be rock is actually a living organism that’s fed off the energy of the Ingress it’s attached itself to. It’s not harmful and squishy to the touch. If pressed hard enough, it secretes a turquoise liquid with the consistency of water that might make a good substitute for that very thing.
WEEK TWO
When crew finally pass through the sector gates, a strange sensation encompasses them, and a depowering of sorts goes into effect. The creators put in security measures meant to put all visitors on equal footing as well as to protect themselves from harm. All crew will essentially have the strength and abilities of the average human. An unforeseen issue, this causes Captain Thán to slip into a coma as he is no longer able to continue to recover at a steady pace, and with the loss of the former Captain’s abilities, crew can no longer be brought back if they die. For the first time, all Moirans are subject to permanent death.

During this week of travel, broken ingress machines and parts will be found scattered among the rocks, and new crew will come through. Unfortunately, these Ingresses aren’t in good shape, and anyone coming through will be in varying states of distress—some physical and some mental. New individuals will either have suffered an age slip, growing older or younger than their original body, some form of body transformation (perhaps that shiny thing they were wearing is now part of them somehow), or an extreme weakness they had never been subjected to before arriving on the Midway Hub. The new people will be offered to join their group, once found, and seasoned crew will be asked to explain to them where they are going and what they know.

The rest of the week will be a mix of greeting the new arrivals and continuing to travel to the center of the Hub. The closer they get, the less frequently they’ll see animals, and more caves will begin to pop up.
WEEK THREE
Entering the third week of travel, settlements and houses begin to crop up and are prime areas for exploration and general supplies. Those who go inside may find items that have been left behind and evidence showing that those of varying species and cultures lived in the homes. Some appeared to have been scientists while others were explorers, but all living quarters are deserted. Crew who are less lucky in their search might come away with no fresh supplies, and others might walk into traps or safeguards left behind by previous tenants; these come in many forms, from mild paralysis to temporary unconsciousness. As there are more residences, there are also more caves. The entrances vary in size, and light sources will be needed to explore. Once inside, crew can find purple underwater streams, which can be consumed, and glowing surfaces. When crew drink the water, it temporarily restores powers, a few minutes tops, and then, extreme lethargy settles in for a couple of hours.

Further into the cave systems, crew will come across these lovely creatures that are attracted to sound and track through scent. They are highly dangerous and attack simply to feed. Killing them, though, is surprisingly simple as they are just as vulnerable and weak as everyone else. They are vicious in demeanor but only as strong as an average human.

The closer to the Inner Gate crew get, the less homes, wildlife, and more caves there will be.
WEEK FOUR
The Captains, aware that the crew is exhausted, stop and make camp for the first few days. Someone mentions that it’s the holidays where they’re from, and the Captains do their best to throw a party. Set up at the base of a cave, tents are built and fires roar. Soft music is played in the form of guitar, thank you Ira, and Cúrre brings out some legumes that taste like cherries when roasted. There isn’t much in the way of decorations, but crew are encouraged to dig through their pac-discs and contribute to the festivities.

After a brief respite, crew learn that the entrances to Gate A and Gate B are inside one of the caves but any signs or markings have long since worn away or been destroyed. Groups are split, TABS are synced, and crew explore carefully until an entrance is found. Crew discover Gate A first, and all crew are contacted to gather there. The Captains will remain at the cave entrance until all crew are accounted for, and then, they’ll enter through the gate together.

[A beautiful chicken. Too bad 76 doesn't seem to care, hefting the table and starting to haul it off. It'll be more useful broken down, but if you figured he's not doing that because he doesn't want Badou to sit on it again, you'd be right.]

I think I'll live.

[He wants to make an argument that they are in space and they really have no idea what time of year it is, but 76 knows better than to try and move the unstoppable force that is Santa Reinhardt. He's just going to have to ride this one out.

What he doesn't expect is being offered a gift, and 76 is quick to hold up his hands.

Keep it.

[Sorries don't fix anything. The pleading tone, while (unsettling) irritating, wouldn't have gotten any further on its own. The user had no right to make demands of him, and it was offensive, almost, that he thought to try.

But those words, that request? Strip Rinzler's certainty away in seconds. The enforcer freezes—flinches, noise jarring out in loud, unsteady beats. It's the sound of errors and corruption. Of mismatch, conflict, and raw anger, of a thousand cycles strangled by his own restraints.

The user doesn't have a right. It had been Rinzler's mistake involving him at all, Rinzler's fear of being wiped back to defaults. It was a betrayal. Clu had broken Tron, cut him to pieces inside and out, but Rinzler was never more than what was left behind. Rinzler served Clu, Rinzler knew who he belonged to—until he'd forgotten (remembered) and it had led them all to this.

He'd thought it was over. When he called Clu, when he surrendered his recovered disk. He'd known the cost of what he'd done, known Clu wouldn't repair the damage without correcting its source, too. But for all his expectations, Clu had left his mind untouched, and Rinzler doesn't know the reason why. It's been over a decicycle, and he still remembers his old name.

He won't fight Clu. He won't, he can't—he can't make the same mistake again. Fingers hover over the holographic keys, curl past and through them until the display wavers and dies out. Rinzler's lights are just behind, flickering in vivid agitation as he jerks his helmet to the side instead. The rejection is clear, the growl that rattles out beneath it furious. But there's something despairing to the rigid, indrawn lock of Rinzler's frame.

He owes Clu everything.

He doesn't have a choice.]

Of the Ingress?

[He gives the device a once-over, just as suspicious of the nature of it as Frisk seems to be. When he decides (for the moment) that it seems to be safe, he lowers his gun, letting it rest at his side.]

Think it's busted, kiddo.

[Not that he really knows anything about this technology.]

[Nate resists rolling his eyes at the doc's insistence on accurate terminology. Medbay is more than a description, it's a...all right, medtent works too.]

Any of what mess?

[He's not being sarcastic or oblivious. He really doesn't know.]

I know you, and I know you didn't.

[He tucks an arm around her shoulders, not looking directly at her face. He has a feeling that would be too much, she'd feel too exposed. He would.]

But I know you can't just make yourself believe it, either. It's okay.

If you say so.

[With a handgun? Eh. Maybe. Depends how skittish the local wildlife is, how close they can get.

At least they don't have to wear bright orange vests and feel like tools.]

You take point on this, because of the two of us, you're the one who at least sort of knows what he's doing.

[Leave it to Angela to make camping a luxury experience--attempted luxury at least, given the resources they have. He wants to laugh at how predictable all this is, but can't bring himself to over the pounding in his head. How could he forget how miserable a hangover is?

It makes him too weary to argue at least, and he unbuckles his boots, leaving them outside at her request. A moment later, he's standing awkwardly in a tent that seems custom-built to house him and his stupid miserable hungover existence. It's almost comical.

76 refuses the pills out of habit, finding it hard to shake years of knowing that they'll do nothing for him.
]

Just water, Doc.

[Entertaining food--much less something covered in nut spread--is something he doesn't think he can do at the moment. Not that he doesn't appreciate the sentiment, he guesses.]

week twooooo

Frustrated as he is by the fact that this planet deemed to de-enhance him, he knows it can't take away his military training. That's most of what makes him effective, anyway. Suffice to say that he's looking out for this kind of thing, and although his reflexes aren't exactly at the level they would be, they're still pretty good, and he's breaking Ginko's fall before he hits the ground.

"Watch it."

His hand has a tight grip on Ginko's upper arm as he pulls him back upright, setting him straight and making sure he has his balance before he finally lets go and steps back.

week 3

[personal profile] mylawn 2016-12-11 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
[Elizabeth isn't alone in her explorations--76 has had mostly the same idea, except with less artistry. He's in this to search for anything useful and perhaps a bit because he's bored. Functioning with the sudden loss of his enhancements has been frustrating, and spelunking for the sake of doing anything but sitting around camp is a good outlet.

The noise of someone speaking reaches his ears and he's quick to follow the sound, if only to make sure that it isn't a threat. When he happens upon the glowing cavern with its sole occupant, he lowers his gun--but only slightly.
]

Talking to someone?

[Or just herself? He's not discounting the fact that she might react poorly to having someone sneak up on her, so there's an air of caution in his voice. Still, he thinks that someone who came down here to draw probably does not have combat on their mind. Good for him. Bad for them, depending on what else is lurking down here.]

[There's a very noticeable difference between when Elizabeth starts reading the message and when she's finished. She goes pale and very still. Of course Rinzler would have analyzed it and known what had happened-- of everybody in that room, he was the most likely to know what she'd done with the shreds of Ploiatos. It had been weeks since that had happened though, she'd thought that no one was going to ask her about it. She'd thought she was home-free.]

[But of course the only one who had figured it out was the one who was painfully blunt, blindly logical, and had a problem with system threats.]

[It takes longer than it should for her to respond, and it's with a skeptical laugh.]
What, you think I'm some kind of human Ingress?
tearmeanewone: (181)

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2016-12-11 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[Woah-- that's a gun on her.]

[She has one too, obviously-- she's not thumbing her nose at Miles Vorkosigan from dimensions away, wandering into a cave and pretending nothing bad could possibly happen-- but she's not about to pull it on him when she'd get one right in the forehead before she could reach. So Elizabeth just raises her hands, still holding her pencil and sketchbook to indicate she's not armed. She might look a little confused as to why he hasn't put it away yet, as though he's expecting her to assault him with graphite.]

Not exactly. I didn't know talking to myself was an offense that would get me fired on. [She indicates the gun with her eyes and an arched eyebrow.]

[ For an answer, Adrien merely pointed at the sleeve of Nate's shirt, which appeared to be rather spectacularly torn.

Or maybe it was just rucked up in an odd way because Nate had been flexing for the natives? ]

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2016-12-11 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. [Elizabeth picks up another piece-- it also has a geometric shape, and she spins it a little trying to figure out if all the sides are the same.] Well, even scientists get bored and need some fun. Who knows if this is some kind of educational tool or just... a way to unwind. Anything legible on the board?
tinkerhell: (welcome to the room of people)

Sure you do. Don't give me that bullshit.

[Reaper lifts his head off the cave wall to look at Jack with a roll of his eyes. Its traded for the less-lucid flash of his teeth when he recounts the time for him.

The SEP had been little more than a purgatory wrapped in vomit, sweat, blood, and death. The good memories were only less terrible memories than the others.]

Week four. They were toppin' you off, before your metabolism sped up. You puked for three days straight. Told you to suck it up, until you puked on Sargent's shoes.

[He pauses for a long gulp of tequila, which he seems to rethink halfway through. While recorking the bottle, he finishes his sentence without looking at Jack, and instead choosing the ceiling. He'd get bored eventually -- and if he didn't, he'd empty another bottle to attack him with as soon as his head stopped spinning.]

The boys tried to lock you out of the washroom for all the extra drills he made 'em do.

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2016-12-11 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[There's at least four of them coming out of the dust caused by the falling rocks. This is incredibly not good, worse if they're armed with something she just can't see yet. The only shot they have of getting out without Elizabeth having to kill every single one of the creatures that comes after them would be to put a physical barrier between her and the man watching her back.]

Hey! There's a chamber full of stalactites down this tunnel, I think if I take out enough of them, we can stop them chasing us-- but I'm going to have to stop firing and we'll have to move faster!

[personal profile] shiro2hero 2016-12-11 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay. Let's do this.

[He gives her shoulders a brief squeeze, and then lets his hands drop.]

Then we'll go that way. And fan out. Yell if you see it, okay?
otiosity: (turned away)

[No one ever has said that before. Her mother had told it her wasn't her fault, only after screaming at her that it had been. Carver had thought it was her fault too. She used to wish that her father would magically appear and promise her that it wasn't her fault and she didn't fail her sister.

Hawke sniffs. Her eyes are suddenly on fire and not like when she's near a cat. Nate's arm around her shoulders feels heavy but in a comforting way. She leans her head against his shoulder.]

Thanks Nate.

[ Look. Genji and Angela are the experts of comfort and they know how to work with what they got. It should be no surprise that she'd hoarded blankets and pillows in her pacdisc from empty rooms, much as it shouldn't be a surprise she's hoarded as many spices and foodstuffs and medical necessities she has. If anyone knew how to be prepared for the unknown, it was a military doctor— and it was lucky for him. He removes his boots as requested before stepping in, toeing the narrow line between two mattresses she climbs over easily, and he waits patiently as she rifles through her things. Eiger, on the other hand, delights in the company and sniffs about 76's legs and feet, tail wagging with enough force to send his rear end swaying with it, nearly tripping over his own gangly legs. It's only been a couple of months, but he grows bigger by the day and he's doubled in size, fur darkening and scarcely silver anymore.

Refusing the pills, though, earns him a quirk of the brow. ]

It's simply tylenol; it will help. They're stronger doses. The bread as well, even if you eat it plain. You've had too much to drink and this will help with the contents of your stomach, whether it's residual alcohol or stomach acid. Go ahead and have a seat; Genji won't be back for hours, yet.

[ She tries one more time to offer him the pills and the slices of bread, insistent, before pre-empting his privacy and turning right back to straighten her things. ]

[Dorian does like to try for unpredictable, especially if it guarantees him an honest laugh like that.]

My logic is often infallible.

[Or rather, he's a pragmatic man who often finds himself being the voice of reason...most times.]

Oh is that all, because you hardly have to stand watch. [And now that Dorian can feel the pull of his magic he takes up his staff and starts casting spells around the parameter of his pool and his company.] These are fire glyphs...if anything triggers those little traps, they will burn. Pro tip, don't step on them.

Does any of this seem like me? [Dorian said giving Hawke an amused, sideways grin.] The beard, the filth, the sleeping on the ground, drinking ingress secretions which I have no wish to ponder beyond having done what was necessary to stay on my feet.

[That, and Ahab could be quite bossy when he wanted to be.]

Me acting like you just seemed like the next logical step, now I have some bottles filled with this water, you really ought to drink some. I plan on bringing more along for this trip.

[Clearly he's not lethargic yet.]

We've spoken a bit, he and I...seems to find himself more concerned about other people...a bit like you that way. Except he has a bossy streak, it's insolent and I enjoy it [it's surprisingly amusing, especially for a man like Dorian who is prone to back talking and defying orders he doesn't agree with. He's humored Ahab, for the most part.] I swear to make you the centerpiece of our next conversation.

[That and he would love to know what Kazuhira is like when he is angry without having that anger directed at him.]

Granted I can only hope I have no cause to be on the business end of your anger, you've been as gentle as a halla with me, but I imagine you are quite a dragon.

[Dorian is almost having difficulty meeting Kazuhira's face, because right now he doesn't feel as though the flattery is a match for how how feels.]

Your kindness moves me as ever. [It's always a bit unexpected at some level, Dorian isn't used to camaraderie.] I like you, I've only ever had reasons to be generous with you...have you eaten? Ah...I think I still have some water...before my magic started. Well, I can't feel the pull of my magic either...

I have my priorities in order, fine wine, clothing, and plenty of toiletries. [That wasn't the extent of it, he has quite an inventory built up, and once they had acquired these PacDiscs he began storing hat he could in there for his own convenience.]

I used to have rooms filled with decadents, but I've been forced to scale back after leaving my homeland...and then the ship required a bit more in the way of scaling back. Once we received the PacDiscs it was really to save on some space and to have my belongings close at hand.

You have my health in your hands. I have no reason to be rude.

[And he's just that painfully polite.]

If you have time, I would like a general checkup. I've... not been examined properly due to outside circumstances.

[Bart lets out a noise while Venom scratches his head.]
