the outer gate
"Open up, and let them in."

The Moira is no more.

With the damage done to the ship due to the timeslip, all that remains is a burning wreckage and parts to be taken—if the crew can find anything in the pieces. Recovery and headcounts are the main objective for the first several hours of being planetside, and once things have settled just enough, Captain Ira calls for a meeting and addresses those who are able in person to explain the situation. He draws a rough map of the area and explains where he believes they are - according to the terrain - and where they must go. For anyone who’s listening, he describes things like an “Outer Gate”, an “Inner Gate” and “gate sectors”. Believing this to be the best course of action, all crew are asked to explore and gather what they think they’ll need to make the long journey towards the central point of the Hub. Because the MIDs are no longer working due to the lack of a network, the Captains distribute a newer tech called the TAB. It serves the same functions as the MID but is lighter, slimmer, and has the ability to stick to any surface.

WELCOME TO THE MIDWAY HUB

Now that the smoke from the crash has cleared, and injured crew have been tended to, the Captains get everyone ready for departure by explaining what they know of the Hub. Almost stone-like, the creators built a domed workspace in the largest solid space on the planet they could find. Gates are the only way inside, and anyone who catches a glimpse of the compound will see that parts of the dome are cracked. Yet, everything still appears to be relatively intact. The Midway Hub’s terrain is very rocky and difficult to walk on at times. Below the surface is a honeycomb of intermittently dense and brittle stone that makes travel difficult due to the unpredictable nature of what lies beneath the crew’s feet. Those who can develop the tech from what’s left of the debris might be able to create something to determine which route is the safest. Ships and small crafts can be used to fly, but landing is a problem—rocks jut up in sharp peaks and the clearer spots can't handle their weight. Vegetation is sparse, consisting of twisted dark gray thistles that have sprung up from cracks in the rock and burn when in direct contact with skin, and what could be considered small animals here can be seen scurrying away the closer crew get to them.

WEEK ONE
Crew are asked to hook cryo beds together and to use any appropriate vehicles that can be made or fashioned to fit the terrain to carry injured crew on the journey to the center of the Hub. Supplies are gathered, and the Captains, as well as any crew who want to, give the Moira a proper sendoff, heads bowed as they say goodbye to what’s been their home. Traveling starts out slowly, a line of a hundred-plus crew members making their way slowly forward. Stops are frequent, but camping for rest only occurs at night. Crew are assigned watch shifts, fires are built, injured tended to, and those who are able are asked to explore nearby caves and hunt for food.

Something akin to deer, though striped and only to be found in pairs, can be stumbled across at night. Throngs of dark purple mammels begin to follow the Moirans on their trip as well. They are friendly, curious, and eat the thistle. Meet the intelligent, watchful predators that aren’t easily scared away and follow the crew from a distance as if waiting to pounce. The thistle can be eaten, but only if cooked first, and those who sample the chewy plant raw will experience a burning sensation in their throat that doesn’t go away until the cooked version is consumed. During the first week, water can’t be found.

Anyone who does hunt, gather, or explore should make sure to that their TABS are on and it’s suggested that nobody goes alone.

Nearing the end of the first week, an Ingress can be spotted close by that crew can explore. If anyone dares to go inside, they will find the texture of the ground and surrounding walls to be rather soft. If inspected closely, crew will discover that what they originally thought to be rock is actually a living organism that’s fed off the energy of the Ingress it’s attached itself to. It’s not harmful and squishy to the touch. If pressed hard enough, it secretes a turquoise liquid with the consistency of water that might make a good substitute for that very thing.
WEEK TWO
When crew finally pass through the sector gates, a strange sensation encompasses them, and a depowering of sorts goes into effect. The creators put in security measures meant to put all visitors on equal footing as well as to protect themselves from harm. All crew will essentially have the strength and abilities of the average human. An unforeseen issue, this causes Captain Thán to slip into a coma as he is no longer able to continue to recover at a steady pace, and with the loss of the former Captain’s abilities, crew can no longer be brought back if they die. For the first time, all Moirans are subject to permanent death.

During this week of travel, broken ingress machines and parts will be found scattered among the rocks, and new crew will come through. Unfortunately, these Ingresses aren’t in good shape, and anyone coming through will be in varying states of distress—some physical and some mental. New individuals will either have suffered an age slip, growing older or younger than their original body, some form of body transformation (perhaps that shiny thing they were wearing is now part of them somehow), or an extreme weakness they had never been subjected to before arriving on the Midway Hub. The new people will be offered to join their group, once found, and seasoned crew will be asked to explain to them where they are going and what they know.

The rest of the week will be a mix of greeting the new arrivals and continuing to travel to the center of the Hub. The closer they get, the less frequently they’ll see animals, and more caves will begin to pop up.
WEEK THREE
Entering the third week of travel, settlements and houses begin to crop up and are prime areas for exploration and general supplies. Those who go inside may find items that have been left behind and evidence showing that those of varying species and cultures lived in the homes. Some appeared to have been scientists while others were explorers, but all living quarters are deserted. Crew who are less lucky in their search might come away with no fresh supplies, and others might walk into traps or safeguards left behind by previous tenants; these come in many forms, from mild paralysis to temporary unconsciousness. As there are more residences, there are also more caves. The entrances vary in size, and light sources will be needed to explore. Once inside, crew can find purple underwater streams, which can be consumed, and glowing surfaces. When crew drink the water, it temporarily restores powers, a few minutes tops, and then, extreme lethargy settles in for a couple of hours.

Further into the cave systems, crew will come across these lovely creatures that are attracted to sound and track through scent. They are highly dangerous and attack simply to feed. Killing them, though, is surprisingly simple as they are just as vulnerable and weak as everyone else. They are vicious in demeanor but only as strong as an average human.

The closer to the Inner Gate crew get, the less homes, wildlife, and more caves there will be.
WEEK FOUR
The Captains, aware that the crew is exhausted, stop and make camp for the first few days. Someone mentions that it’s the holidays where they’re from, and the Captains do their best to throw a party. Set up at the base of a cave, tents are built and fires roar. Soft music is played in the form of guitar, thank you Ira, and Cúrre brings out some legumes that taste like cherries when roasted. There isn’t much in the way of decorations, but crew are encouraged to dig through their pac-discs and contribute to the festivities.

After a brief respite, crew learn that the entrances to Gate A and Gate B are inside one of the caves but any signs or markings have long since worn away or been destroyed. Groups are split, TABS are synced, and crew explore carefully until an entrance is found. Crew discover Gate A first, and all crew are contacted to gather there. The Captains will remain at the cave entrance until all crew are accounted for, and then, they’ll enter through the gate together.

It was fairly last-minute, after others had raided it and we were nearly leaving. I just took whatever was left and dumped it in if it would last.

[ But her smile says the sentiment is appreciated, laying a hand against his arm in quiet thanks. This place certainly was something else; they've had their fair share of frights and horrors, but they were together. And she's made such wonderful friends she's not sure she'd be ready to give up just yet. ]

I've always had a hard time opposing you, you know. One could almost accuse you of playing dirty for daring to test me.

[ Well. He's not making a foul face with the cookie; it must pass muster. Very quietly, with the tiniest puff of her chest, she's proud of herself for managing something close enough that he seems to enjoy. The balance of spices was entirely by eye and taste test. ]

Your own two feet hm? I suspect is was your own two feet that managed to get you into such a state.

[He's not saying, but he's just saying.

Regardless of his playful jest he'll set Rafe down on his feet and wait for the sweet thank you that the man had promised him. After all, using magic with their limited resources was effortful and Dorian deserved a bit of gratitude for being so helpful.

You may have that attractive baby face, but that will not excuse you from ceremony. Though Dorian will stand back with his arms folded for just a moment. It is rather impressive and he's aware that most people tend to be stymied by magic, at least a bit at first. So he'll gladly way for the initial surprise and admiration to wear off, naturally.]

[There wasn't many times someone could call Ana unperceptive so the point Lena was trying to make came across rather clear.]

That is a difficult question to answer. Those that are here, yes they know. Those that are not, they were in the same situation you were in. Back home, I preferred to stay low and out of sight until I complete my objective. Perhaps...once I am sure others are safe, I can return.

[Dorian hardly finds himself surprised by such things anymore, apparently individuals from their world have been in and out of this little adventure prior to his own arrival. Fenris had been around for quite some time before disappearing...if he has returned Dorian is unaware.

And Varric had left his mark, but again Dorian had no idea as to the state of their new arrivals.]

I've been to Kirkwall, a brief rest on my southward journey. Had to see what all the fuss was about with it being the home of the Hero of Kirkwall and all. You cannot visit the south and fail to hit the landmarks, that would just be unthinkable.

[At least that gives you some indication as to which direction Dorian comes from.]

[Dorian Wasn't entirely certain about faith, hope, valor, or justice...but there were a number of malevolent spirits. Spirits of duty, purpose, command, learning, and compassion were things he might attribute to Kazuhira. No one could be devoid of anything benevolent...unless of course they were pure wickedness. Kazuhira was not even close to approaching the sort of pure evil Dorian was familiar with.

Often times Kazuhira seemed too pure to him, even though Dorian knew that wasn't the case. At least with Dorian he'd been patient, tolerant, and generous.]

I think you would do well with magical abilities, honestly, your doggedness and drive are excellent qualities. [Mages had to be very steadfast and strong willed. Even if Dorian didn't seem the type, he had it in him, at least now he did, in his youth he was more hallyracket, but he was also angry and troubled as a young man. He was desperately trying to find himself, accept himself, and love himself.] Once or twice when I was younger, much younger [he supposes he should at least be honest about that] I once made love to a desire demon that took on the shape and form of another man I wanted. It was the first I'd emerged from the fade with this nagging need for a bath. The second time was also with a desire demon, we had a lovely chat, ate grapes, it conjured up this palace filled with luxuries one could only imagine. Naturally it tried to possess me...desire demons are the trickiest ones, they are some of the most powerful demons in the Fade.

[The gesture is clear, and the ID that comes in range soon after is familiar. User: Adrien_Arbuckal was a standard system presence on the ship (when they had one)—ostensibly a recompiler, though Rinzler had only hovered over observed his work in analysis. More specifically, that of the virus.

He hadn't, however, paid much attention to certain other perspectives. Say, how the user would look from floor level. When Adrien turns the nearest corner into sight, he'll encounter a tableau that might seem oddly familiar: a glowing, rumbling figure engaging in a stare-off with Courser from an elevated perch... and pausing to offer him a headtilt.]

[Elena is too good for this world, even an alien world, that's what this is. Not that Rafe would ever say those words or think it. If he wasn't a little asshole he'd probably appreciate her patience with him right now a lot more, but for the moment he's far too focused on himself to even consider that.

When she asks about taking him to the medtent he'll snap out of it for a second, eyes focusing on her and his hand lowers.]

Uh... point me in the general direction, I'll manage from there.

[Let him talk to a doctor and they can tell him he's losing his damn mind and he'll tell them 'no shit'.]

"People are stupid, I've known quite a few." But he's not saying humans in general are stupid. There's stupid in anything, human, animals... demon children?

Looking at things he wrinkles his nose whenever he finds food, because it all seems to be rotten or expired. Fantastic. Right now the damn net he was caught in seems the most valuable.

Any snide remark he had planned is ruined as he sneezes from the dust, not excusing himself but instead just grumbling with an 'ugh'. Let's just move away from the dust now and have a look at their spoils.

Spoils indeed it seems. Rafe opens up a few jars, face twisting in disgust.

"Not optimism, just what I want." But his tone indicates that isn't the case. Lord this smells awful and doesn't look like it was ever edible. Is this even food? Who knows.

[Rinzler drags himself together... and Frisk sinks into a new crash. It could be funny, if anyone were in a state to observe. But where the enforcer had choked on his own shattered pieces, locked off files and decision trees disconnected from the whole, the beta's collapse is much more natural. Much smaller. They're very much themself, and it's emotion, not memory, that prompts the failure.

It's reassuring, in a way.

That still doesn't mean Rinzler has any idea what to do with it. He's made to break things, not fix them. He's not permitted to speak. He has no right to his own feelings, and certainly no concept of how to cope with another's. They're the user: able to command, to control, to create and destroy with intent alone. But Frisk never was any good at that, when it came to his problems or their own.

Rinzler stares down. Looks up. They're off to the side of the more trafficked section of the gate, but still close enough to be observed; he shifts his grip to Frisk's shoulder and tugs carefully, putting his frame between them and the road. Fingers curl, his other hand hovering over the communicator, but he doesn't have the words, and he doesn't know what might help.

In the end, Rinzler waits, noise ticking out quietly. If they have more to say... maybe they'll say it.]

[ Courser had primly laid his tail across his paws as he waited. It was a somewhat familiar scene and the doctor took in his bahari's relaxed posture and then Rinzler's presence. ]

Hello, Rinzler. [ He greeted, his tone quiet and subdued. ] What's brought you to ground level?

[ As he spoke, he withdrew his TAB, unsure how Rinzler might wish to respond. ]

Hawke, either because she's an asshole or has nothing better to do or both, decides to follow along behind him, sneezing loudly a few times and sniffling. Because a person that is sensitive to dust and is loudly annoying about it is exactly what he needs right?

Definitely right. She leans over his shoulder to look at the jar, not caring about personal space or sniffling in his ear, and then recoils when he opens it.

"We might have to dig deep to optimism to find what you want. A dangerous cycle."
prorenataa: (huff)

[ Awwww come on, future Dad! You know they have services that will clean dirty cloth diapers for you. And it's better for the environment! Less shit laying around: literally. ]

I hate to be a pessimistic voice. [ Adrien began, paused and then looked at Nate with an obvious self awareness of how ironic that statement was, coming from him. ] But in my experience the fact that it's so quiet here, relatively speaking, does not encourage the idea of running into civilization any time soon.

"About what?"

Adrien knew what Daryl was talking about, but he was stalling slightly on giving his own response, still working on what exactly he was willing to share in regards to his own circumstances. His own thoughts on their situation and what might come next.

He probably would, wouldn't he? I'll tell him that and give him a boost in spirit.

[She knows he wouldn't either. Which is why it's fun. She sniffs in the dust and rubs her nose thoughtfully and squints like she's searching through years and years of memories.]

We have cheap ale?

[Back on the ground, Rafe actually holds his arms out a bit, as if to steady himself. Gravity and all that is back again, but it doesn't take much to feel pretty silly doing that, so he'll try to play it off, brushing himself off and fixing his clothes.

And excuse you, Dorian, his handsome baby face should excuse him from everything. How is that not how it works? Once he's done getting the smallest bit of his dignity back, Rafe has a better look at his savior. Robes, staff... interesting mustache and magic. Yer a wizard, Dorian.]

... thanks.

[Not the best thanks, but it is a thanks.]

So what are you then? A wizard?

[Also how dare, Rafe, wizards have WANDS. Not staffs. Or something. Gosh.]

[ The buddy system is necessary, seeing how Snake is no expert at exploring this kind of terrain. Give him any high-tech facility and he'll be sneaking past the security system in no time, but caves? He hasn't had a mission set in a place like this since he was in his twenties, probably.

Not that it's deterred him in the slightest. After that encounter with 76's rival mercenary, with the two of them working together to chase the ghost off, Snake has to admit that he trusts 76 more than most people here. That might seem pathetic, but the easiest way to earn that trust is by being competent in a situation like that.

All the same, Snake completely understands that not getting shot at is a feat worth mentioning. In their line of work, it's easier said than done.

76's comment about the mercenary draws his attention, though, and Snake risks a quick glance over his shoulder at him. He keeps it brief; if he's taking point, he needs to be hyper aware. ]

If they were the right kind of engineers.

[She'd rather have an actual army, but people who could build an army would be good too.]

And that's the thing about heavy machinery like your armor, you don't want to hand it out to just anyone.

[It's pretty small in the scheme of 'giving power to people who shouldn't have it' game, but at the moment, it's a huge advantage.]

No. No this is not what he needs. He needs everything to be great right now, which him not being dead aside, it's not. At her being in his personal space bubble and being loud and talking in his damn ear, Rafe glares at her.

"Do you mind?" Why is she still here if not to torture him?

[He sighs dramatically at Varric's response and rolls his eyes, more for show than for any actual feeling of being disappointed, because, well:]

Somehow I knew you were going to say that.

[He frowns ever so slightly at the mention of his grey hairs and holds a brief internal struggle wherein he has to force himself not to rise to the bait in order to address Varric's other, far more relevant statement.]

My point is, compared to the bullshit I've been living with for the past eight months or so, this bullshit is pretty tame by comparison. [A pause.] So far. [Another pause] Even if it did age me prematurely.

[His frown deepens for the briefest of moments as he's forced to once more consider all the grey in his hair, before he shakes his head and grins at his friend again.]

Shall I continue?

Hawke gives him a curious look and then an amused one. "I'm just trying to watch for traps. I mean if you fell into another one, that would be such an embarrassing story. So I'm here to stop that from happening."

She grins like he ought to find that joke funny. Then she shrugs. "Also exploring dusty houses and sneezing is more interesting than sitting around camp and wondering where we are and how we'll get out and falling into an existential crisis".

I'll help you there. I was already headed that way for my shift.

[ Sorry Rafe, looks like you might be stuff with this ray of sunshine a little longer. ]

Besides, you might need someone to catch you in case you pass out.

[ Coming through the Ingress, traveling between worlds, having no idea what the fuck is going on— she's been there. She hadn't been the steadiest either at the time of her arrival. It might've been easier for him and the newly arrivals if they'd still had the Moira rather than this open world where anything could kill them. ]

In any case, I'm happy that you're feeling better.

That's it, right up there.

Oh, god. You too? [ There's a note of wry amusement in her tone, despite the mildly reproachful words. She shakes her head, explaining, ] That kind of mentality seems to be going around here, that's all.

[ She's more or less already heard this same spiel... from the other Hawke. Won't Pepper be confused when she realizes they're technically the same person. ]
