the outer gate
"Open up, and let them in."

The Moira is no more.

With the damage done to the ship due to the timeslip, all that remains is a burning wreckage and parts to be taken—if the crew can find anything in the pieces. Recovery and headcounts are the main objective for the first several hours of being planetside, and once things have settled just enough, Captain Ira calls for a meeting and addresses those who are able in person to explain the situation. He draws a rough map of the area and explains where he believes they are - according to the terrain - and where they must go. For anyone who’s listening, he describes things like an “Outer Gate”, an “Inner Gate” and “gate sectors”. Believing this to be the best course of action, all crew are asked to explore and gather what they think they’ll need to make the long journey towards the central point of the Hub. Because the MIDs are no longer working due to the lack of a network, the Captains distribute a newer tech called the TAB. It serves the same functions as the MID but is lighter, slimmer, and has the ability to stick to any surface.

WELCOME TO THE MIDWAY HUB

Now that the smoke from the crash has cleared, and injured crew have been tended to, the Captains get everyone ready for departure by explaining what they know of the Hub. Almost stone-like, the creators built a domed workspace in the largest solid space on the planet they could find. Gates are the only way inside, and anyone who catches a glimpse of the compound will see that parts of the dome are cracked. Yet, everything still appears to be relatively intact. The Midway Hub’s terrain is very rocky and difficult to walk on at times. Below the surface is a honeycomb of intermittently dense and brittle stone that makes travel difficult due to the unpredictable nature of what lies beneath the crew’s feet. Those who can develop the tech from what’s left of the debris might be able to create something to determine which route is the safest. Ships and small crafts can be used to fly, but landing is a problem—rocks jut up in sharp peaks and the clearer spots can't handle their weight. Vegetation is sparse, consisting of twisted dark gray thistles that have sprung up from cracks in the rock and burn when in direct contact with skin, and what could be considered small animals here can be seen scurrying away the closer crew get to them.

WEEK ONE
Crew are asked to hook cryo beds together and to use any appropriate vehicles that can be made or fashioned to fit the terrain to carry injured crew on the journey to the center of the Hub. Supplies are gathered, and the Captains, as well as any crew who want to, give the Moira a proper sendoff, heads bowed as they say goodbye to what’s been their home. Traveling starts out slowly, a line of a hundred-plus crew members making their way slowly forward. Stops are frequent, but camping for rest only occurs at night. Crew are assigned watch shifts, fires are built, injured tended to, and those who are able are asked to explore nearby caves and hunt for food.

Something akin to deer, though striped and only to be found in pairs, can be stumbled across at night. Throngs of dark purple mammels begin to follow the Moirans on their trip as well. They are friendly, curious, and eat the thistle. Meet the intelligent, watchful predators that aren’t easily scared away and follow the crew from a distance as if waiting to pounce. The thistle can be eaten, but only if cooked first, and those who sample the chewy plant raw will experience a burning sensation in their throat that doesn’t go away until the cooked version is consumed. During the first week, water can’t be found.

Anyone who does hunt, gather, or explore should make sure to that their TABS are on and it’s suggested that nobody goes alone.

Nearing the end of the first week, an Ingress can be spotted close by that crew can explore. If anyone dares to go inside, they will find the texture of the ground and surrounding walls to be rather soft. If inspected closely, crew will discover that what they originally thought to be rock is actually a living organism that’s fed off the energy of the Ingress it’s attached itself to. It’s not harmful and squishy to the touch. If pressed hard enough, it secretes a turquoise liquid with the consistency of water that might make a good substitute for that very thing.
WEEK TWO
When crew finally pass through the sector gates, a strange sensation encompasses them, and a depowering of sorts goes into effect. The creators put in security measures meant to put all visitors on equal footing as well as to protect themselves from harm. All crew will essentially have the strength and abilities of the average human. An unforeseen issue, this causes Captain Thán to slip into a coma as he is no longer able to continue to recover at a steady pace, and with the loss of the former Captain’s abilities, crew can no longer be brought back if they die. For the first time, all Moirans are subject to permanent death.

During this week of travel, broken ingress machines and parts will be found scattered among the rocks, and new crew will come through. Unfortunately, these Ingresses aren’t in good shape, and anyone coming through will be in varying states of distress—some physical and some mental. New individuals will either have suffered an age slip, growing older or younger than their original body, some form of body transformation (perhaps that shiny thing they were wearing is now part of them somehow), or an extreme weakness they had never been subjected to before arriving on the Midway Hub. The new people will be offered to join their group, once found, and seasoned crew will be asked to explain to them where they are going and what they know.

The rest of the week will be a mix of greeting the new arrivals and continuing to travel to the center of the Hub. The closer they get, the less frequently they’ll see animals, and more caves will begin to pop up.
WEEK THREE
Entering the third week of travel, settlements and houses begin to crop up and are prime areas for exploration and general supplies. Those who go inside may find items that have been left behind and evidence showing that those of varying species and cultures lived in the homes. Some appeared to have been scientists while others were explorers, but all living quarters are deserted. Crew who are less lucky in their search might come away with no fresh supplies, and others might walk into traps or safeguards left behind by previous tenants; these come in many forms, from mild paralysis to temporary unconsciousness. As there are more residences, there are also more caves. The entrances vary in size, and light sources will be needed to explore. Once inside, crew can find purple underwater streams, which can be consumed, and glowing surfaces. When crew drink the water, it temporarily restores powers, a few minutes tops, and then, extreme lethargy settles in for a couple of hours.

Further into the cave systems, crew will come across these lovely creatures that are attracted to sound and track through scent. They are highly dangerous and attack simply to feed. Killing them, though, is surprisingly simple as they are just as vulnerable and weak as everyone else. They are vicious in demeanor but only as strong as an average human.

The closer to the Inner Gate crew get, the less homes, wildlife, and more caves there will be.
WEEK FOUR
The Captains, aware that the crew is exhausted, stop and make camp for the first few days. Someone mentions that it’s the holidays where they’re from, and the Captains do their best to throw a party. Set up at the base of a cave, tents are built and fires roar. Soft music is played in the form of guitar, thank you Ira, and Cúrre brings out some legumes that taste like cherries when roasted. There isn’t much in the way of decorations, but crew are encouraged to dig through their pac-discs and contribute to the festivities.

After a brief respite, crew learn that the entrances to Gate A and Gate B are inside one of the caves but any signs or markings have long since worn away or been destroyed. Groups are split, TABS are synced, and crew explore carefully until an entrance is found. Crew discover Gate A first, and all crew are contacted to gather there. The Captains will remain at the cave entrance until all crew are accounted for, and then, they’ll enter through the gate together.

[He seems to crumble a little. Pulling his knees tighter to his chest. He doesn't quite bury his face in them, but it's close. He may be a handful of thousand years old, but that's teens to his kind. No, he doesn't want the honest answer.]

[Because he's sure he already knows what the answer is going to be.]

... You're gonna say it's not gonna get better. Aren't you?

[personal profile] ex_forcechoke292 2016-12-25 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
My--what? Actually, forget it, I don't care.

[The idea he has or even needs therapy is ridiculous. He'll handle this on his own or not at all. And he is not justifying any of it to anyone else. Ever.]

And for the record, too much distraction isn't helpful.

[personal profile] ex_forcechoke292 2016-12-25 08:34 am (UTC)(link)
Of course not, but there's a difference between treading water and holding people accountable!

[That isn't to say he knows how to actually do that, just that he's fed up with leadership not actually leading. No leadership, and only the meager support they've all managed to eke out for themselves. How isn't that endlessly exhausting? One-third of his reason for living is missing, and they're throwing a party while responsibility is never taken by the forces throwing them into this situation?

Anakin bristles and shrugs. It isn't rest he wants. He wants this over.]

I'll take that as a you don't got one and you unfetted....assholeness and crazy runs...well, crazy.

I know.

[He didn't like hearing it aloud. He had nothing against Isabela, nor anything against Hawke's actions. It was the exact kind of shit he wrote about, and it was the kind of thing that was perfectly in-line with her character.]

[But it was a reminder. He should have seen her self-sacrificing nature coming from a mile away. He should have known, the second the Nightmare presented itself again, that he needed to take her hand and run.]

[His gaze flicked to her palm, itching to take it into his own. What happened in the Fade was a world away, but threats to Hawke's life continued to loom. The very fact that she was the head of a security detail was evidence enough of that.]

[He wanted to take her hand, like the way he should have before, and run until all these dangers seemed to leave them behind.]

[Instead, he forced a laugh, tried to force himself to focus on the outrageous idea of Marian Hawke with flowers in her hair. The smile on his lips was tight, nothing like the eye-crinkling grin that usually presented itself around the woman.]

Maybe not that, then...
neverheardofhim: (angery eyebrows)

a Hawke for each arm

[personal profile] neverheardofhim 2016-12-25 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
Every minute of my life, kid.

[He doubted that Garrett understood. This was more than him not being Marian. In fact, he had the same problem with her. None of them, at least not as far as he knew, were aware of what awaited them in just a short amount of time. He could laugh about how he tried to talk Hawke out of... their... ridiculous escapades. Maybe he might even mean it.]

[But saying that they wanted Hawke's head wasn't an exaggeration. Magic had ripped Kirkwall to pieces. The Seeker, for all her admissions of admiration, had been resilient toward the shared magical lineage of the Hawke line, the very line that did what it could to spare the mages even after Elthina's death.]

[Trying to keep all that from boiling over, all while trying to patch up and cauterize the wounds that had been left... It all felt like it had taken years off of his life.]

[So maybe he wasn't smiling as much when he nodded to Garrett. He wished it could be as simple as the white lies and tall tales he spread throughout Kirkwall, just for a laugh.]

Tell you what. Get me a drink and I'll tell you all about it, alright, Waffles?

[Varric's lips twitched into something of a frown. There was a lot there to take in, some of which he wasn't particularly eager to talk about himself. Even if he found a way to lie around the parts where Hawke died, there were other troubling pieces there too. Best not to make her worry about a land that was already in the process of mourning her.]

[At least, he hoped someone was mourning her. It was hard to tell, given everything that had happened.]

She wasn't space-kidnapped. [It felt easier to focus on the less-complex bits (a thought that Varric couldn't help but snort at, seeing as how space-kidnapping was incredibly complex on its own). With luck, Nathan would forget he even brought up the idea of talking to Hawke about what followed after leaving. The less people that knew about her fate, the better.]

neverheardofhim: (leaning over musing)

[personal profile] neverheardofhim 2016-12-25 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
Strange.

[Varric shuddered to himself. For some reason, not using his hands seemed like an incredibly unpleasant idea. He figured it was some sort of latent dwarf-y need to create things (which only made him shudder all the more). As he re-dealt the cards in his hands, he made a point of savoring the feeling against his calloused fingers. Hopefully he wouldn't find himself in any kind of handless situation any time soon.]

[Being without Bianca had left him disabled enough.]

So, at the risk of being offensive, what are you. [Varric's fingers twitched, itching for a pen and a pad of paper. Maybe he could make something of this story.]

I mean... usually when I see something like you, it means deals with demons and bad news. You... [A pleasant sort of smile crossed his lips.] You don't seem so bad, Noodles.

So how does that happen?

[We're not fucking okay, Ronan wants to scream. He doesn't know everything but he knows that much. There's nothing he can do, though. God knows he doesn't want to push Adam away.

Instead of saying anything more, he pushes into the kiss, thumb stroking Adam's cheek as his hand slips back to comb through Adam's hair.]
unaffluent: (Shadow of Your Love)

[personal profile] unaffluent 2016-12-25 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
[Adam is perhaps stubbornly blind to the things that aren't okay. There's enough to worry about. There's more than enough for both of them to worry about just surviving here that he didn't have time to be anything but okay.

They didn't have time to be anything but okay, especially if Ronan is the one that ends up being right. Adam doesn't want to waste the time on being hurt over something that happened when Ronan thought he'd never see him again.

That isn't fair. Adam's not sure he wouldn't have done the same if the shoe had been on the other foot. His kiss is tender and loving, wishing he could soothe Ronan more than he had. Slowly he draws from the kiss, trailing his lips over his cheek as moves to press them to his ear.]

What... [There's hesitation, Adam licking his lips though his tongue also brushes the other's ear unintentionally.] Did... what things have you not done with someone else?

[personal profile] nightmarist 2016-12-25 10:46 am (UTC)(link)
[The question hits him with a rush of shame. His face grows hot, especially after that kiss, especially with that accidental brush of Adam's tongue. Everything feels confused. It's going to take him a minute to reassemble paths of cognition in his mind.

What hasn't he done?

It's as Ronan thought. His virginity was more important to Adam than he'd admitted.]

No one else has been inside me.

[Even though he couldn't remember everything that had been done to him while he was on cocaine, he's certain he would have felt it the morning after. Small reassurances in this sea of horror.]

I haven't been inside anyone else, either.

[He's less certain of that, but he needs it to be true. He couldn't live with himself if he'd done that to Jesse. He wants to believe Jesse would have said something about it the second time they were together, if Ronan had hurt him like that.]

[Adam feels guilty for asking but a part of him is relieved at the answer. It's a horrible thing, maybe, that he wants something that he'll be able to call his own, more than that first kiss, more than being the one that Ronan loves.

He hates himself a little for the pettiness, knowing the question must have hurt Ronan. He nips at Ronan's earlobe gently before pulling back slightly to look at him.]

I'm sorry... [He whispers, because he feels guilty for asking. He feels guilty for feeling relieved. Kavinsky had had him thinking worse.] It wouldn't have mattered... I just... [He flounders because he's let a little of his emotions leak to the surface and it's hard to push them back once more.]

I just needed to know.

Quirking her eyebrow, there's a pause as she considers, expression bemused

"Define 'whole thing'. I need to know what I'm going to confirm or deny, first."

The worry, the standing in the middle of nowhere, the... fact she hadn't seen her around before the crash? It didn't take a scientist, rocket or otherwise, to draw a conclusion.

"Are you a new arrival?"

[personal profile] nightmarist 2016-12-25 11:10 am (UTC)(link)
[The nip at his ear makes him shiver, and Ronan hesitates before meeting Adam's eyes.]

You have nothing to be sorry about.

[He's actually glad that Adam's beginning to speak honestly. Ronan prefers an honest pain. It's always better to know why he's suffering. Better to have no doubts.]

I know it matters. It matters to me, too. That's why I saved it.

[Ronan brushes another kiss over Adam's lips.]

What else do you want to know?

[Now, that is a good question. Despite her dislike and distrust towards the authority on Moira she still hasn't thought of about any alternatives to their situation. So far J's never been one to stand on a soap box and preach about changes. Adapting and making the most out of the situation, that's more her style.]

Alive. [J says after thinking for a moment. Not really an answer to her question.]

[personal profile] unaffluent 2016-12-25 11:14 am (UTC)(link)
[Adam eyes flutter shut at the brush of their lips and he swallows.]

I really... don't think I want to know anything more. [And he means it. Any other answers he isn't equipped to deal with potential answers that he might get and Ronan wouldn't lie to protect him so he wouldn't ask.]

I'll bet they were feeling generous. [It's said with a chuckle, adjusting something on her haptic panel. After another moment, something goes ping, and she's dumping a new batch into some pocket on the dashboard.]

I'm rushing the repairs, but just to get her moving again — don't think our captains are going to be sticking around the crash site for much longer. [Well, she wouldn't, but who literally knew with Ira and company? Still, it stood to reason — after all, their goal was farther inland, and Shepard was relatively sure they weren't going to just send runners.]

Should be useful for transporting a supply or two, even a person or two. [Here, she pats the Mako's hull almost lovingly, as a horse fancier might pat their steed.] Might even let you drive.

To spare? [For the briefest of moments, she's nonplussed — although she doesn't recognize the man, there's something very familiar about his expression, something specifically pointed, determined--

Oh.

Turning over the bottle in her hand, fresh out of the crate, she reads the label and twitches a smile.]

Precious resource out here. You wouldn't be trying get in before it was evenly divided up amongst the rest of the crew, would you?
squadgoals: (this is not what i meant by squad goals)

[personal profile] squadgoals 2016-12-25 11:28 am (UTC)(link)
[Although she doesn't stop what she's doing at the sound of Nate's voice, Shepard shoots a shrewd look over her shoulder. Wedging the crowbar in a notch deeper, the crate makes a distinctive pop sound, and flings its wedged top off — and through a window.

Straightening up, she at least has the decency to look a little embarrassed.]

[Adam shakes his head, eyes averted after the kiss. A part of him would have liked to know everything but once you know something you can't unknow it and he didn't feel secure enough in himself for the possibilities.]

I don't think I need to know anything else. [Basically just a repetition of what he'd already said, he knew.]

I trust you. [He adds, because he does. The circumstances that led them here had been extreme but Ronan loves him. Ronan is dedicated to him and that's more than enough.]

[ Pepper cracks a broad grin and lets out a laugh that's nearly a downright giggle at the priceless mental image of Hawke stumbling into one of the meetings with the stuffy bigwigs Pepper has the dubious pleasure of dealing with all too often in her line of work. She wishes she could somehow see that happen with her own eyes. ]

It's something he most definitely needs, though I didn't always entirely appreciate being something of a glorified nanny to a grown man all day, all week. But even then, he had redeeming qualities. He's improved considerably since those early days.

[ Her lips twitch at the puppy comment. As much as she loves Tony and is reassured -- pleased, even -- to hear such remarks, it's easier to make light of it all. ]

Probably because so far, I've been the only one crazy enough to put up with him for prolonged periods of time.
