reset in the regress
"Time is what we want most, but what we use worst."

With the Moira in a sort of low maintenance state, Captain Ira and First Mate Egan have been forthright with information at their disposal, and as the weeks have progressed, not much has been answered in terms of what has happened with the ship itself or why some of the crew are informing the Captain and First Mate of Ingresses all across the universes being broken. Early on the 16th, Captain Ira decides that Manasseh has been in cryo long enough to warrant waking her. With that decision comes the restoration of all ship functions—including normal water and power usage. Rationing continues, but it isn’t as strict (or enforced) as it has been the last few weeks. However, the Navigator appears and acts no differently than before, which troubles the Captain, and rather than shut down the Moira’s functions once more, he decides to redouble efforts to contact someone at the Midway Hub.

As before, when he first tried, no one answers.

Not completely discouraged, Captain Ira orders First Mate Egan and those in both Navigation and the Tower to put out a transmission to anyone with an Ingress in hopes of finding a technician or someone with enough information pertaining to the machinery to perhaps fix the one aboard the Moira long enough to get them to the Midway Hub without having to travel the length of the Runoff. Within the hour, they receive a peculiar return transmission that’s worth investigating since it’s considerably close. During this time, Captain Thán sends the following MID message to all Moirans:

Crew,

The last few weeks have been hectic, and I'm sure everyone has questions that they need answered. When Captain Ira and First Mate Egan approached us, we asked for evidence of their legitimacy and were given it through credentials, logs, and the private access codes that they had in their possession. It allowed us to see that they were, in fact, the previous leadership of the Moira.

Explaining why we took a knee is rather simple. They know what they're doing, and it is clear now, more than ever, that we do not. Every bump in the road that we've met, you have survived because of your own tenacity, and many of the deaths and hardships were our fault in some way. We found this ship unmanned and took it without any skill. It worked, at first, but then, you were all here, and it changed everything. We needed to grow to accommodate, and we weren't fast enough. As captains, we've failed you, but we do believe that Ira and Egan can do so much better. We'll be working with them to make the end of this trip as short as possible. You deserve to go home, and they can make that happen.

You also deserve honesty. The blame for the events on Caducus Primary are our burden to carry, not yours. The statues that their people believed had been stolen were on this ship, and we were responsible for them being here. Not long after boarding the Moira, we stopped there and were approached by a person offering us the items at a lower trade rate. We knew that it wasn't strictly by the books, but we did the deal anyway. When those actions came back around, we attempted to remedy them but were not fast enough and many lives were lost.

This is one of the reasons we have given leadership rights over. We've done enough damage, and you don't deserve anymore by our hands. For what it's worth, we do apologize for everything, and we'll be staying on the ship until we reach the Midway Hub.

-Thán
Whether believed or not, the previous Captains can still be found around the ship in their usual places of work. Onward, the Moira goes—

WELCOME TO THE LUMINOUS SEA

Unlike most places the Moira has come across or visited, the Luminous Sea is thus called due to its soft turquoise glow. While other parts of the Runoff consist of stars and planets, there is no life or anything remotely sentient found within this part of the universe. Yet, the most fascinating thing about the Luminous Sea is not the fact that it appears empty but for the sole reason of why the Captain and First Mate first approached it in the first place: it’s very reminiscent of Ingress energy. The ship is slow to move through the Luminous Sea, all those stationed in the Tower asked to observe and collect data to be sent to Navigation as well as those who have been reassigned to the Ingress. However, even stranger things are afoot the longer the Moira lingers within the ocean of blue-green space...

IN, OUT, AND ALL AROUND
Needless to say, things are now a little… different on board thanks to the anomalies caused by the energy of the Luminous Sea. What once had been a simple journey using MPS to navigate your way around the ship has now become a risk in Location Roulette. Perhaps you’re simply planning to head to the library, but when you walk through the door, you’ve somehow ended up in the middle of the Mess Hall. Or you’re fresh from a nice, long shower only to find yourself in the middle of the Cargo Bay wearing nothing but your towel! It seems that the space inside the Moira has rearranged itself to make life interesting for the crew. The changes happen at random and aren’t guaranteed to work the same in reverse. Sometimes, a doorway will work to take you back the correct way, and other times, it might deposit you in yet another part of the ship you hadn’t intended to visit. Also, be wary of those areas of the ship that have been sealed for the protection of the crew and never go anywhere alone. Because nothing good ever came of walking through a door to suddenly end up outside the Moira or within the room that holds Ploiatos.

50 SHADES OF AGE
While in the Luminous Sea, some members of the crew are likely to wake up and find themselves a changed person. Literally. The unstable nature of the energy that encompasses the Sea and its ability to bend both time and space means that those affected by it might find themselves suddenly years younger. Or even older. What’s more, some crew members who do become younger might possess no memories of have ever been on the ship and will see the Moira through brand new eyes. Those who find themselves jumping to a point further down their timeline won’t be affected as harshly, though they will be tarnished with age as time tends to do. What’s best for the new and old alike is to remain calm and continue on their daily routines until otherwise instructed by the Captain and First Mate. Hopefully leaving the Luminous Sea will wear away this reversal in time and return you to the person you once were.

[Her hand moves forward, and perhaps it is more intimate than she might ever have done in that time, but she does cup his chin, drawing it up. Would that she could tell of those bright times, of those brothers in arms who bring light to the galaxy. Two stars, shining through the darkness.]

I think sometimes our teachers are hard on us, Anakin, but it's only because they want to bring out the best in us.

[Wide eyes lift from the floor to meet her own at that simplest touch. Such a gesture had never once seemed strange with his mother: she'd been as tactile as protective, and their only solace had been in the fact that they still had one another. But half a year in the Jedi Temple has undone nearly a decade of that comfort and trust: it had been a connection suddenly deemed dangerous, childish, and wrong, as if any tactile comfort at all was not only unnecessary, but some kind of luxury to be cast off.

It all rushes back, the memories, the warmth of that love, and the homesickness (the worst of all of it), all in that gentle hand under his chin.

He loves her, he thinks. He isn't sure why, or how it happened. Only that it's different from his mother, and no less comforting. The pull has always been there, and he's always found her intriguing, this angel among the rest. He'll never be convinced that loving his mother is wrong, and no one will be able to tell him this is either. She cares, more than most anyone he's met since leaving home. How is caring about someone, helping them, befriending them, how is any of this wrong? He loves her, he knows it. Someday he might even know what that means.]

It doesn't feel like it. And I'm trying. Honest!

[Being confronted with a teenager who seemingly has a crush on you is one thing, but Anakin is still young now. He still has much to learn, and Padmé knows just how far he will come (although her mind cuts short of the veer he has taken off that path). She can remember that generous boy, one who had found space to be cold, and one who had grown in her heart despite their young ages.

There is a little arch of her eyebrow. She doesn't dismiss his concerns but she does let her words linger for a moment even after he has spoken again. Yet her smile softens and she drops her hand away from his cheek. He has never been the typical Jedi, but it is a part of him that she loves. All of him. His insecurities and his flaws, but his strengths as well.]

I know you are, and I am certain that Master Kenobi does as well. I have no doubt that you will become a great Jedi, Anakin. Yet skill and knowledge do not come overnight. It is something that we work hard for, until one day we do look back and see just how far we have come.

Is that what it's like for you too?

[Being told you're wrong all the time? Anakin makes a face as she draws away, the confusion and unease readily apparent.]

It's hard to imagine you as bad at anything.

[She has been one of the most competent people he's ever known. Fourteen had never seemed like it to him, it's always been a realm of philosophy and understanding that he's not sure he'll ever attain. Without that Jedi prophecy, he's just a kid from a poor family on a poor, backwater planet most of the Republic's never heard of. Naboo's the opposite: it's beautiful and cultured and smart, and they'd picked the right person as a representation of that. It's hard to picture her as anything but.]

[There is a soft noise from Padmé, one that is akin to an amused snort. There are plenty of things she cannot do. She could not draw a person to save her life, nor could she fix a ship. She might be able to water a plant but she couldn't grow fields of crops. There is an art to everything, to knowing when to do something.]

I'm human, Anakin. I make mistakes and take missteps just like anyone else. It is what I learn from those that matters though.

[There is that brave face, but it doesn't mean that Padmé doesn't have moments of doubt or confusion. She can cry and break down. There are areas that she is good at, roles that she shines in, but they are her field, her comfort zone, what she knows and what she loves.]

And there are plenty of things that I can't even begin to do. Why, look at you. You build a droid.

[personal profile] podracing 2016-08-23 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Started a droid.

[He never did finish it, but...what was the word? Eschewing possessions had been outlined very clearly by Master Qui-Gon before he'd...died. And anyway, Threepio was supposed to be there to help Mom when he couldn't (and he definitely can't now).

But he should have finished it. He'll find a way to get back home and finish what he started. Somehow. Shmi deserves that much.]

But I guess...no, I understand. [Believe it, do you, young Skywalker? You do, or you do not. No more "guessing." At least not out loud.]

I don't think I could do what you do either. The arguing, maybe. [He gives a small smirk. At least he means that.] But all the ceremony and the rules and...would I have to dress like that?

[He makes a face. It might look good on Padmé, sure. Everything looks good on Padmé, somehow. But all that ceremonial garb reeks of so much patience that even he can admit he doesn't possess enough of it.]

I still think you could do it though. Build a droid. If you wanted, I mean. I could teach you.

[She would need to be more careful, wouldn't she? Careful not to speak of things that are to happen but that have not happened for him yet. Threepio would be a valued member, but for now, she knows the droid is still on Naboo, with his mother, not yet gold plated.]

Of course. Started one, which is still more than I could accomplish.

[There is a small twitch of her lips as he continues to speak.]

It's not quite arguing, but debating. [But Padmé can see that smirk that he has, recalling how he had teased her on Naboo. Later though, as it hasn't happened for him. No, he still has much before him, much to learn, much to see, much to accomplish.]

And not quite the dresses I wear, but certainly formal robes. Although... Perhaps one of my blue ones...

[Eyeing him up as if she is picturing him in that attire. Yet she does give a small blink, smiling, but shaking her head.]

I could certainly follow a manual, but I could never do what you've done, Anakin.

If I helped you, you could! I know it!

[Focus, unfortunately, is a thing that comes and goes, and fixates on the smallest, inconsequential bits of conversation first. He's working on it. Or he thinks he is, he gets reprimanded for it enough.

Eventually though, the subject drops, and he gives a small shrug.]
If you wanted, I mean. What else is there to do around here anyway?

[Exploring is one thing, and he'll definitely do it, but if he's learned anything that's actually stuck, it's that things happen the way they do for a reason, whether that's the Force or something else. Maybe not all things, not comfortable things, but he wouldn't be out here and definitely not with company if there wasn't a reason, right?]
democratically: (reflects)

[personal profile] democratically 2016-08-25 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
[She cannot say that it is on the list of things that she has ever thought about accomplishing in her life. Yet, while it isn't something that Padmé would ever seek out on her own, it doesn't mean that she wouldn't enjoy spending time with Anakin. Even if he is younger.]

We can... Although I'm not entirely certain where you would even find parts.

[That would be an Anakin question to ask, and right now, he currently doesn't have the answer. She knows that they're not going to just randomly take pieces from random spots though. That would be wrong.]

There's a library, and a garden. A rec area.
podracing: ([B)] damn your love damn your lies)

[personal profile] podracing 2016-08-25 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
[The mention of a library gives him pause, only because he's just gone over this with Obi-Wan a month or so ago--it's a painstaking process of catching up, and one he's not keen on letting anyone else know about (especially not Padmé)--but that sudden tensing is gone as quickly as it comes. He isn't sure what a ship is doing with a garden, but a rec area sounds promising. Hopefully.

But none of that gives him the answer he really wants.]

A ship this size has to have spare parts somewhere. Engine upkeep, defense systems, flight deck...we don't need anything important. Just spare parts no one uses.

[How else could he have made a fully functional skeleton of a protocol droid from a decrepit shipyard?]
democratically: (listening)

[personal profile] democratically 2016-08-26 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
[Her lips twitch in to a gentle smile, watching as he does become more adamant. Padmé recalls how he had been so proud to show her Threepio. A young boy on Tatooine, with a great destiny written in his future. Her heart gives a sudden thud, but she doesn't let that smile waiver.]

We can certainly go and look, if you would like? It may take a while though. It is a big ship and there are a few issues with doorways.
podracing: ([:|] damn the dark damn the light)

[personal profile] podracing 2016-08-27 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
[He shrugs past the warning about doorways; this whole instance is a strange, surreal impossibility, what's one more weird piece added to it? He has Padmé with him. What's there to be worried about?]

That's okay. I'm not sure what we need yet anyway. And we're together, that's important, isn't it?
democratically: (let me reach)

[personal profile] democratically 2016-08-27 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[She's not too surprised, as one needs to truly experience it to understand it. Just because one may go through a door safely doesn't mean that the next shall. But with luck, it is no something that will be too much of a problem.

Yet her attention does sharped at those last words, wondering how much she should be reading in to them. Padmé does keep her smile easy as she gives a nod.]

Yes, there is that. Did you want to remain star gazing, or shall we set out?
podracing: ([B)] break the silence)

[personal profile] podracing 2016-08-29 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
[The stars, he thinks, will still be there. Or at the very least, they'll be different enough that he won't recognize them for some time. Stars live a lot longer than they do, and he can't watch them forever. They're right where he like likes them: surrounding, new, comforting in their relative consistency.

This sounds a lot more interesting. (And with much better company.) He beams up at her.]

Let's go!
democratically: (warm)

[personal profile] democratically 2016-08-30 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
[His enthusiasm is endearing, whether he realizes it or not. In fact, he likely doesn't. Offering a hand, Padmé makes a little motion with her head. Maybe this way they wouldn't end up separated in different parts of the ship.]

Yes.
