[It's just...he looks so incredibly tired. Distant, beyond that smile, though Anakin can't place how, and won't bring that up. But beyond that, there are more obvious signs: his hair is longer and the beard.] Master, beards don't grow out of nowhere.
[This is very matter of fact. Old or "older," that much is true. But after a moment of consideration, the subject drops. See? He can focus, when he needs to.]
Where are we?
no subject
[ That is, of course, the short answer. But even this version of Anakin would be used to that by now. ]
We've been taken from our own galaxy and transported here. Things are very strange, but it's under control.
[ No use in alarming the young man, even if Obi-Wan hasn't felt a modicum of real control since he stepped out of the Ingress. ]
no subject
Master, that doesn't sound very [and in flawless mimicry:] "under control."
no subject
You know I don't like when you do that, Anakin.
[ It's as if he's regressed, right back to that too-young version of himself: a bitter brew of over-steeped leaves. He's long since hoped to shed this tense habit, but even a familiar child can unnerve him. ]
But, you're right. It's something of a mess and I was attempting to spare your feelings. I'm sorry.
no subject
[He sighs, and averts his gaze to the ground like that somehow alleviates the shame of being reprimanded, and nods quietly. He knows better. Honestly. But all he'd wanted was a straight answer, and--
Did he just get an apology back?]
What kind of mess? Are we here to fix it?
no subject
We very well may be, although if that's the case, we're certainly not alone. Everyone here is hoping to go home.
Currently we're somewhere else — possibly another universe. The device that could send us home is malfunctioning, but in time the goal is to return to the place of its creation. Once there, someone should be able to assist us.
no subject
[A journey he understands. The other universe part sounds wild, but would explain why his Master looks so different. But that's a lot of uncertainty without a real goal, and if he's picked up anything about Obi-Wan in the last half-year, it's that his Master is very serious about his mandates. The Council's orders, and those he gives in kind. It's not very like him to not have a clear directive (even if it's often simpler or even different from what Anakin would often like it to be...especially if it means being stuck in the Temple for the umpteenth time like annoying baggage), and if this "mission" isn't really one...]
How long is this supposed to take?
no subject
[ That's right, Obi-Wan without a solid plan. It's like a planet without gravity, a sun without warmth. Flying blind, for lack of a better description, has never been Master Kenobi's way, but what choice does he have? Even their best made plans have been wiped away by the chaos of the ship.
This happens to be a great example. ]
Can I show you to our room? Or have you already found your way?
no subject
[He's excited and horrified by the prospect all at once. He's had no time to get used to having so much time to himself, but to share it with the one person who already notices everything? It's daunting.]
No, Master, I...I just got here. I think? Our room?
no subject
[ He gestures for Anakin to follow along. If nothing else, they can check in on the cats and the droid. ]
You were... here before. With me.
no subject
[He thinks he would. He's positive he would. There's no way anyone could see all of this, a whole other universe (probably), wild space like this, and forget it. Not ever.
Still, he can't not follow; he doesn't know his way around, and from his--their--room seems like as good a start as any. He might be disobedient from time to time, sure, but in the interest of trying. Which Obi-Wan is doing, even if he is acting...strange.]
no subject
[ If he knew the science behind it, he might feel more comfortable making guesses. Unfortunately, that appears to be well outside of his reach at the moment. There's no saying what caused this otherwise. Reality begins feeling strange when you aren't certain what to trust anymore. ]
You're not alone in this, so you may take heart in that. Others are experiencing the same disorientation as you are.
no subject
[Anakin makes a face as they walk.] This is really weird.
[The powers of observation seem obvious, but then he's suddenly got years of learning to make up for. He doesn't like feeling like there's something hanging over him--not more than there usually is, anyway--and that he's completely forgotten all of it. But there's also more to it than Obi-Wan is telling.] So what's the future like? And none of that you'll tell me when I'm older stuff.
no subject
Well, it isn't particularly pretty, but it is bright. You and I have fought countless battles, side-by-side. [ He says countless, but, in reality, he probably knows the true number. ] You even have a Padawan Learner. And much sooner than either of us expected.
[ So what if he only tells the palatable parts. That's really all that's savory for this conversation, anyway. ]
It's quite an incredible journey ahead of you, Anakin Skywalker.
[ And with their intervention, Obi-Wan means to make it a good journey, too. With a good end that he won't have to see in his own lifetime. ]
no subject
So when do I get to build a lightsaber?
[THIS IS THE ONLY IMPORTANT QUESTION NOW.]
no subject
I'll tell you when you're older.
no subject
...Not wholly anyway.]
You promised.
no subject
Oh, I promised, did I? No, I think you demanded and I obliged. Albeit briefly. There is quite a difference, my young friend.
no subject
[He is not whining, thank you very much, he is pressing a point and standing up for himself, which is...still a thing he's learning when to do. It's still definitely not fair, though. Every other Padawan he's seen (prior to now where there aren't any, at least) has been through the ritual and have graduated past glowsticks that are poor excuses for training sabers.
But he is pouting. That is definitely a pout.]no subject
It will be soon, Anakin. You'll have your lightsaber soon. I promise. [ And he'll need it too soon. ] In the meantime, let's just get you settled here, why don't we?
[ With the cats and Ava in this small, but safe room. ]
no subject
However, what his easily distracted mind would make anyone think he noticed first are the cats. His eyes widen for a moment upon watching the three of them play, a careful banter of claws and mewling, and the occasional miffed prance away. Anakin turns to Obi-Wan as he's halted just past the doorway, his jaw dropped in that horribly ill-mannered way he hasn't mastered yet, the surprise plainer on his face than perhaps he even feels it.]
Do they live here with you?
[Master Kenobi doesn't allow pets. He doesn't typically allow much of anything, but especially not pets. If that doesn't result in a lecture about "pathetic life forms" (and he still doesn't understand what's so pathetic in something needing help or even just amiable company), it does result in one about responsibility. Or free will. Or the Code.
Something has to be wrong.]
no subject
He nods and makes to replace the water in the cat bowl, a habit he's gotten into every time he comes back to the room after being out for a while. ]
With us, yes. The three of us. We have a roommate named Ava, as well. She's from a different galaxy from our own, but exhibits many of the characteristics of Force users we're accustomed to meeting.
[ Or will be accustomed to meeting, at least, he thinks, watching as the cats surround young Anakin. ]
no subject
Even if everything already has.]
A different galaxy? So...like this one? The Force exists out there too?
[It exists here, or he'd be exhibiting some awful symptoms of withdrawal, but he doesn't really think twice about it with Obi-Wan here, it just seems like it should be.
He scoots back on the bed, still focused on Obi-Wan, and about to ask only a million different questions, when he bumps into something cold and rigid. Cutting that gape that had meant to be another question off, he reaches behind to grab at it, and feels around a cylinder almost too big for his hand. His eyes go wide, and he gasps, his breath stopping.
He pulls out a lightsaber. (His, though he doesn't know it). He knows he isn't supposed to have it, and yet here it is in his hands anyway. He can explain! (No, he can't.)]
no subject
He stops what he's saying and smiles thinly at Anakin. ]
You found that quickly.
[ And then, feeling obligated, he has to admit to its origins. ]
It's yours, of course. I don't doubt you'd recognize your own handiwork if you took the time to examine it.
no subject
[Beautiful.
Anakin takes that as a cue to observe the weapon. It's heavy in his hands, the hilt has more heft than he'd expected, and it's too big for his hands; he must grow an awful lot by the time he builds this. (That's not an encouraging thought.)
But it...feels right. He thinks. Jedi are supposed to feel nothing from machinery at all, but the space around and between it, the organic residue left behind on something distinctly inanimate is supposed to be nearly too negligible to trace through the Force. But he can. The metal has a warmth, through it a history, and underneath it all beats the heart of the crystal that makes the lightsaber distinctly the weapon of a Jedi.
It doesn't quite beat in time with his own, but the echo of it is familiar. Right.
Still after a moment, with a small sigh, he tears his eyes away from it and holds the handle, blunt end out (that seems the only right way), toward Obi-Wan. "Right," or not, the man had still said no. And curious as he is, pushing the point is tantamount to lying about it in any other case. And feeling right, or not, that isn't.]
