reset in the regress
"Time is what we want most, but what we use worst."

With the Moira in a sort of low maintenance state, Captain Ira and First Mate Egan have been forthright with information at their disposal, and as the weeks have progressed, not much has been answered in terms of what has happened with the ship itself or why some of the crew are informing the Captain and First Mate of Ingresses all across the universes being broken. Early on the 16th, Captain Ira decides that Manasseh has been in cryo long enough to warrant waking her. With that decision comes the restoration of all ship functions—including normal water and power usage. Rationing continues, but it isn’t as strict (or enforced) as it has been the last few weeks. However, the Navigator appears and acts no differently than before, which troubles the Captain, and rather than shut down the Moira’s functions once more, he decides to redouble efforts to contact someone at the Midway Hub.

As before, when he first tried, no one answers.

Not completely discouraged, Captain Ira orders First Mate Egan and those in both Navigation and the Tower to put out a transmission to anyone with an Ingress in hopes of finding a technician or someone with enough information pertaining to the machinery to perhaps fix the one aboard the Moira long enough to get them to the Midway Hub without having to travel the length of the Runoff. Within the hour, they receive a peculiar return transmission that’s worth investigating since it’s considerably close. During this time, Captain Thán sends the following MID message to all Moirans:

Crew,

The last few weeks have been hectic, and I'm sure everyone has questions that they need answered. When Captain Ira and First Mate Egan approached us, we asked for evidence of their legitimacy and were given it through credentials, logs, and the private access codes that they had in their possession. It allowed us to see that they were, in fact, the previous leadership of the Moira.

Explaining why we took a knee is rather simple. They know what they're doing, and it is clear now, more than ever, that we do not. Every bump in the road that we've met, you have survived because of your own tenacity, and many of the deaths and hardships were our fault in some way. We found this ship unmanned and took it without any skill. It worked, at first, but then, you were all here, and it changed everything. We needed to grow to accommodate, and we weren't fast enough. As captains, we've failed you, but we do believe that Ira and Egan can do so much better. We'll be working with them to make the end of this trip as short as possible. You deserve to go home, and they can make that happen.

You also deserve honesty. The blame for the events on Caducus Primary are our burden to carry, not yours. The statues that their people believed had been stolen were on this ship, and we were responsible for them being here. Not long after boarding the Moira, we stopped there and were approached by a person offering us the items at a lower trade rate. We knew that it wasn't strictly by the books, but we did the deal anyway. When those actions came back around, we attempted to remedy them but were not fast enough and many lives were lost.

This is one of the reasons we have given leadership rights over. We've done enough damage, and you don't deserve anymore by our hands. For what it's worth, we do apologize for everything, and we'll be staying on the ship until we reach the Midway Hub.

-Thán
Whether believed or not, the previous Captains can still be found around the ship in their usual places of work. Onward, the Moira goes—

WELCOME TO THE LUMINOUS SEA

Unlike most places the Moira has come across or visited, the Luminous Sea is thus called due to its soft turquoise glow. While other parts of the Runoff consist of stars and planets, there is no life or anything remotely sentient found within this part of the universe. Yet, the most fascinating thing about the Luminous Sea is not the fact that it appears empty but for the sole reason of why the Captain and First Mate first approached it in the first place: it’s very reminiscent of Ingress energy. The ship is slow to move through the Luminous Sea, all those stationed in the Tower asked to observe and collect data to be sent to Navigation as well as those who have been reassigned to the Ingress. However, even stranger things are afoot the longer the Moira lingers within the ocean of blue-green space...

IN, OUT, AND ALL AROUND
Needless to say, things are now a little… different on board thanks to the anomalies caused by the energy of the Luminous Sea. What once had been a simple journey using MPS to navigate your way around the ship has now become a risk in Location Roulette. Perhaps you’re simply planning to head to the library, but when you walk through the door, you’ve somehow ended up in the middle of the Mess Hall. Or you’re fresh from a nice, long shower only to find yourself in the middle of the Cargo Bay wearing nothing but your towel! It seems that the space inside the Moira has rearranged itself to make life interesting for the crew. The changes happen at random and aren’t guaranteed to work the same in reverse. Sometimes, a doorway will work to take you back the correct way, and other times, it might deposit you in yet another part of the ship you hadn’t intended to visit. Also, be wary of those areas of the ship that have been sealed for the protection of the crew and never go anywhere alone. Because nothing good ever came of walking through a door to suddenly end up outside the Moira or within the room that holds Ploiatos.

50 SHADES OF AGE
While in the Luminous Sea, some members of the crew are likely to wake up and find themselves a changed person. Literally. The unstable nature of the energy that encompasses the Sea and its ability to bend both time and space means that those affected by it might find themselves suddenly years younger. Or even older. What’s more, some crew members who do become younger might possess no memories of have ever been on the ship and will see the Moira through brand new eyes. Those who find themselves jumping to a point further down their timeline won’t be affected as harshly, though they will be tarnished with age as time tends to do. What’s best for the new and old alike is to remain calm and continue on their daily routines until otherwise instructed by the Captain and First Mate. Hopefully leaving the Luminous Sea will wear away this reversal in time and return you to the person you once were.

A few months ago. Six, or so. [He thinks to point out that "advanced in age" is exactly what old means, but he doesn't want to spoil wherever this good mood is coming from. He's not in trouble, he's not even getting lectured, but some buttons...if he pushes too much, that'll change and quick. But if Obi-Wan is pushing on that unease with Master Yoda...it must still be alright.] But...older, then.

[It's just...he looks so incredibly tired. Distant, beyond that smile, though Anakin can't place how, and won't bring that up. But beyond that, there are more obvious signs: his hair is longer and the beard.] Master, beards don't grow out of nowhere.

[This is very matter of fact. Old or "older," that much is true. But after a moment of consideration, the subject drops. See? He can focus, when he needs to.]

Where are we?

Somewhere unexpected.

[ That is, of course, the short answer. But even this version of Anakin would be used to that by now. ]

We've been taken from our own galaxy and transported here. Things are very strange, but it's under control.

[ No use in alarming the young man, even if Obi-Wan hasn't felt a modicum of real control since he stepped out of the Ingress. ]

[personal profile] podracing 2016-08-19 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
[Anakin can't help the eyeroll. Or, fine, he can, but he doesn't try very hard. He should have expected a non-answer, and yet...it's still frustrating. Like an assumption that he wouldn't understand, or that he's dumber than he looks. He knows he isn't.]

Master, that doesn't sound very [and in flawless mimicry:] "under control."

[ Obi-Wan's expression turns flat and he frowns at young Skywalker. ]

You know I don't like when you do that, Anakin.

[ It's as if he's regressed, right back to that too-young version of himself: a bitter brew of over-steeped leaves. He's long since hoped to shed this tense habit, but even a familiar child can unnerve him. ]

But, you're right. It's something of a mess and I was attempting to spare your feelings. I'm sorry.

[personal profile] podracing 2016-08-21 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
I know, Master, I'm sorry.

[He sighs, and averts his gaze to the ground like that somehow alleviates the shame of being reprimanded, and nods quietly. He knows better. Honestly. But all he'd wanted was a straight answer, and--

Did he just get an apology back?]

What kind of mess? Are we here to fix it?

[personal profile] jedimindtrick 2016-08-21 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
[ Things can change, Obi-Wan reminds himself. They don't have to be the same as they were before, even if circumstance wishes to dictate otherwise. ]

We very well may be, although if that's the case, we're certainly not alone. Everyone here is hoping to go home.

Currently we're somewhere else — possibly another universe. The device that could send us home is malfunctioning, but in time the goal is to return to the place of its creation. Once there, someone should be able to assist us.

[personal profile] podracing 2016-08-21 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
...So what do we do in the meantime?

[A journey he understands. The other universe part sounds wild, but would explain why his Master looks so different. But that's a lot of uncertainty without a real goal, and if he's picked up anything about Obi-Wan in the last half-year, it's that his Master is very serious about his mandates. The Council's orders, and those he gives in kind. It's not very like him to not have a clear directive (even if it's often simpler or even different from what Anakin would often like it to be...especially if it means being stuck in the Temple for the umpteenth time like annoying baggage), and if this "mission" isn't really one...]

How long is this supposed to take?
jedimindtrick: robins @ ij (☆ 17)

[personal profile] jedimindtrick 2016-08-22 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
There's no clear indication, but my hope is sooner rather than later.

[ That's right, Obi-Wan without a solid plan. It's like a planet without gravity, a sun without warmth. Flying blind, for lack of a better description, has never been Master Kenobi's way, but what choice does he have? Even their best made plans have been wiped away by the chaos of the ship.

This happens to be a great example.
]

Can I show you to our room? Or have you already found your way?
podracing: ([:|] listen to the wind blow)

[personal profile] podracing 2016-08-22 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Our--

[He's excited and horrified by the prospect all at once. He's had no time to get used to having so much time to himself, but to share it with the one person who already notices everything? It's daunting.]

No, Master, I...I just got here. I think? Our room?
jedimindtrick: robins @ ij (Default)

[personal profile] jedimindtrick 2016-08-22 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, the one we share.

[ He gestures for Anakin to follow along. If nothing else, they can check in on the cats and the droid. ]

You were... here before. With me.
podracing: ([:|] damn the dark damn the light)

[personal profile] podracing 2016-08-22 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
Why don't I remember that?

[He thinks he would. He's positive he would. There's no way anyone could see all of this, a whole other universe (probably), wild space like this, and forget it. Not ever.

Still, he can't not follow; he doesn't know his way around, and from his--their--room seems like as good a start as any. He might be disobedient from time to time, sure, but in the interest of trying. Which Obi-Wan is doing, even if he is acting...strange.]
jedimindtrick: thehollowestartists @ tumblr (☆ 27)

[personal profile] jedimindtrick 2016-08-22 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
I believe this ship has something to do with that. Either it's taken you out of time — from a different time than before — or it's regressed you in some manner.

[ If he knew the science behind it, he might feel more comfortable making guesses. Unfortunately, that appears to be well outside of his reach at the moment. There's no saying what caused this otherwise. Reality begins feeling strange when you aren't certain what to trust anymore. ]

You're not alone in this, so you may take heart in that. Others are experiencing the same disorientation as you are.
podracing: ([B)] break the silence)

[personal profile] podracing 2016-08-22 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
You're not...wait, you mean I'm older? Or--

[Anakin makes a face as they walk.] This is really weird.

[The powers of observation seem obvious, but then he's suddenly got years of learning to make up for. He doesn't like feeling like there's something hanging over him--not more than there usually is, anyway--and that he's completely forgotten all of it. But there's also more to it than Obi-Wan is telling.] So what's the future like? And none of that you'll tell me when I'm older stuff.
jedimindtrick: thehollowestartists @ tumblr (☆ 24)

[personal profile] jedimindtrick 2016-08-24 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
[ The real temptation is to hold back, to be as tight-lipped as possible, but... truthfully, no matter what age Anakin is, he's still Obi-Wan's best friend. The same intelligent and eager individual, the same challenging air and underlying cockiness. Carefully tempered, but still the same. ]

Well, it isn't particularly pretty, but it is bright. You and I have fought countless battles, side-by-side. [ He says countless, but, in reality, he probably knows the true number. ] You even have a Padawan Learner. And much sooner than either of us expected.

[ So what if he only tells the palatable parts. That's really all that's savory for this conversation, anyway. ]

It's quite an incredible journey ahead of you, Anakin Skywalker.

[ And with their intervention, Obi-Wan means to make it a good journey, too. With a good end that he won't have to see in his own lifetime. ]
podracing: ([:|] damn the dark damn the light)

[personal profile] podracing 2016-08-24 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
[Battles, huh? It sounds exciting, enough so that his mood instantly brightens out of that careful uncertainty.]

So when do I get to build a lightsaber?

[THIS IS THE ONLY IMPORTANT QUESTION NOW.]
jedimindtrick: thehollowestartists @ tumblr (☆ 25)

[personal profile] jedimindtrick 2016-08-24 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
[ Obi-Wan smirks. ]

I'll tell you when you're older.
podracing: ([:|] listen to the wind blow)

[personal profile] podracing 2016-08-24 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
[Anakin loudly huffs, thinking that this is not remotely fair, but he doesn't dare say as much. There's a line he can push, one he knows is there, and with Obi-Wan in an okay mood, he doesn't want to be the one to spoil it.

...Not wholly anyway.]

You promised.
jedimindtrick: robins @ ij (☆ 4)

[personal profile] jedimindtrick 2016-08-24 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
[ Obi-Wan raises an eyebrow at that, his arms crossing over his chest. He is... affecting a loose sternness, but he's trying to hold off on a chuckle. For some reason, he feels as if he understands many more moments shared with his own Master in this same vein. ]

Oh, I promised, did I? No, I think you demanded and I obliged. Albeit briefly. There is quite a difference, my young friend.
podracing: ([:|] you would never break the chain)

[personal profile] podracing 2016-08-25 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
How is obliging different than saying yes? [He huffs, his cheeks puffing out in that childlike way, full of words he's not sure how to string together, frustration, and a bit of lingering baby fat.] That isn't fair.

[He is not whining, thank you very much, he is pressing a point and standing up for himself, which is...still a thing he's learning when to do. It's still definitely not fair, though. Every other Padawan he's seen (prior to now where there aren't any, at least) has been through the ritual and have graduated past glowsticks that are poor excuses for training sabers.

But he is pouting. That is definitely a pout.]
jedimindtrick: robins @ ij (☆ 19)

[personal profile] jedimindtrick 2016-08-27 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
[ Obi-Wan gestures Anakin into their room on Mero, far too interested in picking at the details than he should be. So, he doesn't. Anakin knows the difference — he doesn't need definitions and clarification to get Obi-Wan's point. ]

It will be soon, Anakin. You'll have your lightsaber soon. I promise. [ And he'll need it too soon. ] In the meantime, let's just get you settled here, why don't we?

[ With the cats and Ava in this small, but safe room. ]
podracing: ([:(] you will never love me again)

[personal profile] podracing 2016-08-27 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
[The first thing he notices upon entry is that third bed. Obi-Wan had said they shared a room, and that makes enough sense, but that third one definitely looks lived in too, and he'd never mentioned that.

However, what his easily distracted mind would make anyone think he noticed first are the cats. His eyes widen for a moment upon watching the three of them play, a careful banter of claws and mewling, and the occasional miffed prance away. Anakin turns to Obi-Wan as he's halted just past the doorway, his jaw dropped in that horribly ill-mannered way he hasn't mastered yet, the surprise plainer on his face than perhaps he even feels it.]

Do they live here with you?

[Master Kenobi doesn't allow pets. He doesn't typically allow much of anything, but especially not pets. If that doesn't result in a lecture about "pathetic life forms" (and he still doesn't understand what's so pathetic in something needing help or even just amiable company), it does result in one about responsibility. Or free will. Or the Code.

Something has to be wrong.]
jedimindtrick: robins @ ij (☆ 5)

[personal profile] jedimindtrick 2016-08-27 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[ For as strange as it is, Obi-Wan can see how Anakin struggles with this new version of him. Each little caveat is uncharacteristic to the man who first began training Skywalker in the ways of the Force.

He nods and makes to replace the water in the cat bowl, a habit he's gotten into every time he comes back to the room after being out for a while.
]

With us, yes. The three of us. We have a roommate named Ava, as well. She's from a different galaxy from our own, but exhibits many of the characteristics of Force users we're accustomed to meeting.

[ Or will be accustomed to meeting, at least, he thinks, watching as the cats surround young Anakin. ]
podracing: ([:(] if you don't love me now)

[personal profile] podracing 2016-08-29 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
[He picks up one of the kittens and seats himself on the nearest bed, legs folded up underneath himself. The kitten--incidentally the one his older-self had named--climbs up to perch on his shoulder. It ends up wrapping itself around the back of his neck, thanks to Anakin's much smaller stature. The kitten recognizes him by scent, but it seems confused that its normal home is so changed. Still, after a moment, it begins to purr, and it's almost as if nothing has changed at all.

Even if everything already has.]

A different galaxy? So...like this one? The Force exists out there too?

[It exists here, or he'd be exhibiting some awful symptoms of withdrawal, but he doesn't really think twice about it with Obi-Wan here, it just seems like it should be.

He scoots back on the bed, still focused on Obi-Wan, and about to ask only a million different questions, when he bumps into something cold and rigid. Cutting that gape that had meant to be another question off, he reaches behind to grab at it, and feels around a cylinder almost too big for his hand. His eyes go wide, and he gasps, his breath stopping.

He pulls out a lightsaber. (His, though he doesn't know it). He knows he isn't supposed to have it, and yet here it is in his hands anyway. He can explain! (No, he can't.)]
jedimindtrick: thehollowestartists @ tumblr (☆ 34)

[personal profile] jedimindtrick 2016-08-30 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
[ Obi-Wan is doing some sort of tidying, eager to explain what he knows, and almost rambling on through Anakin's discovery. But there's nothing that alien slaver could do to wipe away decades of practice in recognizing the appearance of a lightsaber.

He stops what he's saying and smiles thinly at Anakin.
]

You found that quickly.

[ And then, feeling obligated, he has to admit to its origins. ]

It's yours, of course. I don't doubt you'd recognize your own handiwork if you took the time to examine it.
podracing: ([:|] damn the dark damn the light)

[personal profile] podracing 2016-09-01 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
It's--

[Beautiful.

Anakin takes that as a cue to observe the weapon. It's heavy in his hands, the hilt has more heft than he'd expected, and it's too big for his hands; he must grow an awful lot by the time he builds this. (That's not an encouraging thought.)

But it...feels right. He thinks. Jedi are supposed to feel nothing from machinery at all, but the space around and between it, the organic residue left behind on something distinctly inanimate is supposed to be nearly too negligible to trace through the Force. But he can. The metal has a warmth, through it a history, and underneath it all beats the heart of the crystal that makes the lightsaber distinctly the weapon of a Jedi.

It doesn't quite beat in time with his own, but the echo of it is familiar. Right.

Still after a moment, with a small sigh, he tears his eyes away from it and holds the handle, blunt end out (that seems the only right way), toward Obi-Wan. "Right," or not, the man had still said no. And curious as he is, pushing the point is tantamount to lying about it in any other case. And feeling right, or not, that isn't.]
