"Time is what we want most, but what we use worst."

She'd pegged him as someone not to catch on. Oh well, no matter. She stops and looks dramatically stunned and whips her head around as if looking for who's being yelled at.]
What? What's going on?
no subject
You took my nuti-bar, is what's going on. If you want one, there are plenty up at the counter, [ he pointed in that direction ] you don't have to just take mine.
no subject
[She raises her hands. See empty.]
But thanks for the tip, ser.
no subject
[ Adrien rolled his eyes and moved to stand up from where he'd been sitting.
Rather than approach her, he headed for the counter that he'd just pointed out. After all, he could just get another one. ]
no subject
She shoves a few in her bag before ripping one open and hungrily consuming it right at the counter.]
no subject
He's been living on them since rationing started; he knows they're not that tasty. ]
Just trying to choke it down as fast as you can so you don't have to taste it?
no subject
Beats stale bread.
no subject
If you don't like it, why are you eating it? There are other foods available, you know?
[ Did she know? Had he ever seen her before? She was familiar, yet ... not? ]
no subject
[She stops in the middle of nearly taking another bite out of the bar and stares at him.]
You're not just trying to play an elaborate joke on the new girl, are you?
no subject
Come on. We're still on some rationing and I can't cook worth a fuck but we can probably put together a reasonable sandwich.
no subject
What would an unreasonable sandwich entail?
[Okay but her stomach is rumbling and she maybe, possibly, hasn't eat in a few days before that.]
no subject
[ Adrien responded as he began to rummage around in the galley. The bread was easy enough to find and the walk in yielded some meats and cheese, even a bit of lettuce (which he was going to assume was from the garden). It also yielded something round and apple like, which he assumed was also from the garden. ]
Here. [ He tossed the apple towards her as he carried the rest of his treasures towards a counter. ] Start with that.
no subject
[She reached out and caught the apple easily. She might not be good at lot of things but aside from magic, she had some killer reflexes. Which is why she could sometimes almost beat her father in boxing practice.
Her blue eyes widen at the fruit in her hand like she's never seen such a wonderful treasure.]
Winter is just ending back home, I haven't seen one of these in months.
[And she'll tuck into it.]
no subject
[ Sorry, Hawke but you're not getting a Dagwood sandwich.
With her chewing on the apple, and his not having to answer questions for the time being, Adrien lapsed on the whole conversation thing. He focused on preparing the sandwich, and while it wasn't huge he did manage to balance it so it would hopefully help fill her stomach.
At least till her teenage metabolism burned it off.
Sandwich made, he shoved it across the counter towards her, hopefully before she made a run at eating the apple core! ]
no subject
[Okay. She was maybe kind of considering eating the apple core. Just a little bit. But it's quickly forgotten once she sees the sandwich. She grabs it and devours it quickly. It's probably a dumb idea and she'll probably spend most of the day feeling sick but it's so worth it not to feel hungry all the time.
As she's finishing picking at the crust and eating it she looks over at Adrien and the ingredients to make the sandwich.]
So. How many of these do we get in a ration?
no subject
Teenagers.
Adrien shook his head and began to build a second sandwich when it became apparent that she was going to wolf down the first one. He had put the final touches on it about the time that she polished off the crust and asked her question. ]
One per crew member. [ He answered, folding up the second sandwich into a napkin and shoving it across the counter towards her. ] Try to save that one for when you're hungry a little later, or else you're going to make yourself sick and throw it all back up.
[ Disgusting, yes but he wanted to make a point. He also began to put away all the ingredients he'd pulled out to make the food. ]
no subject
[She takes it like it's a delicate little treasure and puts it into a safe spot in her bag where it won't get crushed. Then she notices him putting away the ingredients and quickly moved to closer to try and cut him off.]
Can you make one more? For my dog?
no subject
I've already given you a second ration. [ Adrien explained though he didn't indicate where that second ration had come from, and he would purposefully continue to pack up the ingredients. ]
But there are some bones, which I've been feeding to Courser. I'll get a couple of them for your dog.
no subject
[Hawke nods, thinking that maybe she can sneak back in here and make a few more of those sandwiches to bring back to her family without getting caught. But after she she has to reach out and grab one of the napkins to sneeze and blow her nose into she becomes aware of what a pathetic figure she cuts. Back home it doesn't matter, there's plenty of pathetic ruffians running around on the streets and that elicits little sympathy. Especially when you have to worry about anyone who helps you finding out you're a mage. At least Hawke can take care of her self but people here are strangely willing to help.]
So do you always go out of your way to help people and dogs that steal from you?
no subject
There was the sound of some rummaging and Courser looked particularly intrigued. It was an after thought but Adrien did, at least, have the sense to bring two bones with him when he walked back. He gave one to Courser first and then, when the bahari's was occupied with it, he held the other out towards Hawke.
As for her question, the doctor looked a little bemused and unsure how to answer for a moment. It was ... complicated and as such he went for the answer with the least amount of explanation. ]
I'd rather you didn't; in the future, if that could be arranged?
no subject
[She opens her crossed arms as to indicate her small and malnourished form. Then she takes the bone before pulls her arms close to her sides once more. Her eyes watch him, deeply curious.]
Where I'm from, not many people go out of their way to help people like me, even when I'm begging and not stealing. So let's just say, I'm a little surprised.
no subject
He briefly considered if there was any way to explain it, before quickly discarded even making the attempt. At least when it came to his own, personal reasons. The answer he did give was, in it's way, just as honest. ]
People around here help one another out. Doesn't matter who you are or where you came from, we're all members of the same crew here.
no subject
Even mages?
no subject
Pausing his words, the doctor considered things for a moment and then started again. ]
This world, this ship, doesn't follow the same rules and social morals that your home world does. It doesn't follow the same rules of my home world or ... anybody you see.
There are some constants, such as we're not allowed to murder one another without retribution but that's anybody; not one species over another.
[ He paused again and then, after a breath he continued. ]
We're all stuck on this tin can together and that makes for a pretty level playing field when it comes to different shapes, sizes, abilities and beliefs.
no subject
...But how do we come here? I might be able to be here and eat two rations but my family is still back home. Waiting for me. I can't just leave them. They need me.
