the lucid disparity
"Never be the first to arrive or the last to go, and never, ever be both."

After several weeks of moving through the Luminous Sea, the Moira has nearly reached the edge of this illustrious place within the Runoff, and things are finally beginning to shift back into their normal state of being. Shiplife has returned to a somewhat regular pace as job changes have taken effect, and there is a peaceful sort of silence throughout the crew that hasn’t existed on board in over a month. However, as most things do on this journey, this much needed break does not last long.

Once the Moira exits the outer ring of the Luminous Sea, all internal functions immediately begin to shut down. Permanently. Unlike before, this loss of power careens the entire ship forward and initiates emergency functions and evacuation procedures. All MIDs alert each crewmember of safety protocols to follow with an alarm, designating appropriate evacuation points as well as the nearest spacesuits as per the Emergency Mode function. Basic life support systems (artificial gravity, oxygen, etc.) will last only as long as the backup stores of solar energy from the wings lasts—which, considering the Moira’s size, is about two hours maximum. Communications within the ship are fractured, but they still work enough for brief contact. Captain Ira sends a brief message to the crew alerting them of what he suspects to be the cause of the problem: the Moira’s internal core has begun an unintended reboot. (Anyone in contact with Navigator Manasseh will find her unresponsive, and if found on the Directory, her status will be listed as RED.) Unfortunately, neither the Captain, prior Captains, or First Mate have time to attempt any further explanation. Without any guidance and essentially free-falling through space, the Moira is at the mercy of the gravitational pull of the nearest celestial body. It appears that it is time to temporarily abandon ship.

WELCOME TO ? ? ? ? ?

With enough impact to shake everything around it, the Moira crashes into the waters of this unknown place. Those lucky enough to have reached the EEUs will find their landing to be somewhat more gentle, though the dispersion of the Emergency Escape Units may leave some crew scattered farther from the ship than others. Yet, regardless of where anyone lands in this seemingly endless ocean, there is only one place to navigate towards: a single island. The sun is warm on this planet, almost tropical, and the air is breathable. There is no detection of life just on the shore of this island, which is where Captain Ira and First Mate Egan direct any and all crew within range. Staying on the Moira, at this point, is not a possibility, but those within jobs of repair will be asked to assist in restoring all necessary functions as they wait for its systems to reboot themselves. Those in cryo in the Medbay are moved to the beach, where Captain Thán will remain with them as the rest of the crew moves further inland to explore.

IN THE JUNGLE YOU MUST WAIT
While some crew remain behind on the beach with the Moira, others are more likely to begin a search for resources, supplies, and other living beings on the island. Eventually, the sand and water give way to a thick, dense jungle with various types of natural flora and rather vivid plant life. What might seem strange, however, is the fact there seems to be no animals to speak of. The jungle, while rather beautiful to look at, remains eerily quiet. Almost too quiet. As you walk, it’s easier to hear your own thoughts, and the further in you move, the easier it is to notice how quickly those bright colors begin to disappear into a thick mist that’s forming around your feet. With each step forward along a surprisingly well-traveled path, the fog continues to grow until it’s impossible to see anything in front of you. Hopefully, you were smart enough to travel with another crewmember because getting lost in this fog can leave you wandering for hours or days. Perhaps even forever. Take hold of the person with you and continue pushing forward on the path. Or turn back. Ultimately, either choice will lead to a safer place than stepping off and getting lost in the mist.

THE FLOWER RIPENS WITHIN ITS PLACE
Clearing the jungle and the fog that has thickened with every forward step appeared to be a never ending task, but the sheer beauty of the massive stone buildings carved into the mountainside that looms up above are breathtaking once you reach the opposite side of the mist, light reflecting off marblesque pillars and a stained glass dome. Up the steps leads crew members to a flat and open courtyard where the hosts - averaging between five and six feet tall and green with bright colors - of this world offer food and shelter in exchange for one thing: step into one of the small changing rooms and bathe and dress in the finest that they have to offer. Clothing and jewelry are offered after you are bathed in scented water, and then, you are led back into the courtyard to wait for everyone else to be ready. All crew members are shone equal attention. Robots are buffed until they gleam, AI’s are offered temporary forms or any manner of upgrade they’d like, and any immediate need will be met without hesitation.

WHEN STARTED, WHERE DOES IT MORALLY END
Once everyone is clean and dressed in fresh clothes provided by the natives, it’s time for the real festivities to start. The hosts are more than generous as they lay out an elaborate feast of local foods that are much too tempting to say no to. Drinks are served liberally, and no cup remains empty for long. (You might even wonder if the cup magically refills itself as there is no bottom to be seen.) There is something to suit every taste, and a request need only be made once before one of the natives goes off to fulfill it. As the feast continues, you will begin to hear music. The natives live to celebrate and encourage their visitors to do the same. Their worries can be forgotten for the night in favor of losing themselves to simpler pleasures. Indulgences do not stop at food, drink and dancing either. Cards and dice sets are brought out for those who wish to test their luck, and there are several natives who would happily engage in physical competition with the crew to see who might come out on top. And for those with something else on their minds… there is space set aside for anyone who wishes to have a bit of private time with another. Still, what’s stranger than all of this generosity for nothing is the compulsion to participate in these activities.

There is literally no limit, and while moments of hesitation or questions are normal, it’s near impossible to deny those wants. Indulge, and let all of your worries melt away. Hours become days becomes nights, and those nights never end.

NOW STRING THEM TOGETHER AND ANSWER ME THIS
Throughout the entire building, there is only one room that has a guard set before it. Anyone who approaches is given the same riddle to answer as follows: It's always there, just beyond your reach. Stuck between lands and skies and seas. It sets. You may go towards it, yet distant it will forever rest. There is no punishment for failing to answer except that the door remains shut. For those who answer correctly, the guard stands aside as the door slides open. The room behind it is transcendent, and most beautiful of all is the pool that rests in the center. The waters seem to have their own faint glow that casts a soft light on the ornately carved walls of the chamber. Any who choose to enter its waters will find that any issues they are struggling with are no longer so troublesome. The mind finds clarity, and problems that appeared insurmountable before now feel like they can be easily conquered.

[ Peter had been one of the people she had been worried about when the ship started going. She knew he was fast, knew if anyone could get out at the last minute, it was him. Still. That didn't stop Jean from worrying about him.

It's why, when she spotted the familiar silver hair, she calls out vocally and mentally without meaning to : ]

Peter!

[He's sprawled out on the sand, trying to dry out in the sun and catch his breath from the shock of the crash. He springs forward at the mental call; even spending the past several months with Wanda didn't have him prepared for sudden telepathy. He's by her side in seconds, though he stumbles to a stop with a groan.]

Is there anything as uncomfortable as wet denim?

[He smacks at his thighs with a grimace, straightening after a moment and moving like he's had to stop himself from throwing an arm around her in a hug. It's instinctual. He may have been fine in the crash, too fast to get hurt from landing shock and quick enough not to need the pods, but he couldn't help but be worried about everyone else.]

You make it off in one piece? I've seen a lot of medbay staff out here, if you need help.

[ Jean smiles at him, relieved. She has to stop herself from hugging him, too, remembering how their first meeting had gone. She moves her hands to her hips instead. ]

Wet spandex?

[ Just a guess. But then she shakes her head. ]

I'm fine. Shepard shoved me into a pod before I could do much else. You?

takeitslow: ([Uniform])

[personal profile] takeitslow 2016-09-11 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
[He snorts.]

I don't do spandex so I wouldn't know.

[He's certainly teased enough people around the ship about their own costumes.]

I swam. And good. I think the people who made it to those things were probably the best off. You guys and the people in cryo, at least. [He pauses. His feelings toward Charles are still complicated but he knows she cares about the Professor so he turns and points up the beach.] They're all accounted for, as far as I can tell. Xavier's pod is okay.

[ Jean's about to make some smartass comment about how he should be able to run across the water but then Peter mentions Charles and her expression turns into something more along the lines of stunned. Peter had told her Charles had been on the ship. But she hadn't been able to reach his mind so she assumed he was no longer on it.

So, yeah. She's pretty surprised. ]

...what?

[ She takes a step closer to him, looking in the direction he pointed and then back to him. ]

The Professor is still on the ship? Has been on the ship this whole time?

[ Okay, she might be getting a little mad now. ]

[Peter looks from her to back down the beach. He feels something prickling at the back of his mind like he's stepped in it, but holds his ground.

His names was still in the directory. That had to be enough to tip her off. Right?]

In cryo. Yeah. He's been frozen for a while now. I've been to see him a few times.

[Because Jean showing up had made him wish Charles would hurry up and come back. She clearly knew and missed the man, and Peter wasn't so much of an ass to want to keep them apart for his own feelings. Even some of the medbay staff had taken to giving him a few updates.

Somehow he'd just thought she would know.]

Everyone wakes up from it eventually. I've been in there before. He's okay, Jean. [He mistakes that's what's worrying her. That she thinks Charles might be in danger.] He's got good doctors looking out for him.

[ Oh, he's definitely stepped in it. Although Jean knows it's not all his fault. Knows that everyone makes assumptions and miscommunication happens. She knows this. But right now, all the walls she had been putting up to keep it together ever since she arrived on the Moira are starting to crumble some.

She looks at him like she can't believe what he's saying, shaking her head. She opens her mouth to say something but then closes it and just shakes her head again, turning to jog over into the direction Charles was, throwing over her shoulder. ]

I can't believe you!

takeitslow: ([Worry])

[personal profile] takeitslow 2016-09-20 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
[He flinches, mirco-second fast, and starts after her. He's smart enough to keep it slow, keep a few steps behind. He's not entirely sure she won't try to hit him. He could dodge of course, but he's been around enough women on this space trip to know that usually makes things worse.]

I thought you knew!

[After a moment of consideration, he wonders if that's the wrong thing to say.]

I'm sorry? I didn't think you didn't know. Honestly! I just- you know I'm not a fan and I didn't think we should be talking about him.

[personal profile] greyate 2016-09-20 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
[ She keeps jogging, making a frustrated noise at Peter's words. ]

How could I know?! I can't feel him! I've never felt him on the ship!

[ Adding, sounding more angry than she's ever allowed herself to while on the ship. ]

And you never told me he was in cyro!

[ Once she reaches the cryo tubes, she stops short, breathing hard and weaving through them, looking for the Professor. When she finds him, she has to stop herself from immediately touching the glass. Slowly, tentatively, she lays a hand on it, her other hand coming up to cover her mouth as her expression crumples.

She couldn't feel him or his mind. It was like... static. Like he wasn't even there. ]

takeitslow: ([Bummer])

[personal profile] takeitslow 2016-09-20 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
[He didn't follow her out so far, letting her approach the tubes on her own. He's aware they're surrounded by other people from the ship, it's not the most ideal place to be fighting.

But he can't try to take her away from Charles now.]

His name was still in the MIDs. I thought you'd figure it out.

[He keeps his voice lowered.]

Maybe I thought I'd already mentioned it with how the past month has been. I must have let it slip my mind. [The power switch between the staff. Mainframe setting back off his worries about the robots. The aging issues. J. Maybe he just let everything else happen and forgot there were other important things going on.] I'm sorry. Okay? I wasn't trying to be an asshole about it.

this seems like a good place to end this thread lol

[ Her hand stays on the glass for a moment before she's forcing herself away from the tube, her other hand still covering her mouth. She shakes her head at Peter's words, not able to trust her own voice. She walks away from him and the tubes, further down the beach.

Mentally, she sends him: I know it's not your fault.

She's just. The man she loved like a father was in a cryo tube, so lifeless she couldn't hear his mind. And there was a chance he wouldn't even know her if he ever came out of it. It was too much. Being brought onto the ship, being around all these strangers, dealing with trying to adapt to a life she didn't choose. And now this.

She eventually sways and falls to her knees in the sand, sitting on her legs. She stays here, hunched over and shoulders shaking from the force of her sobbing. She had tried to keep it in. Tried not to let any of this get to her. She hunches over more, hands digging into sand that wouldn't allow her to grip it, tears leaking from her eyes and hitting the tops of her hands.

She doesn't notice how bits of sand are floating in suspended animation around her. Just that this was too fucking unfair.

Maybe she just needs a moment to be a little weak after trying to pretend to be strong. ]
