the outer gate
"Open up, and let them in."

The Moira is no more.

With the damage done to the ship due to the timeslip, all that remains is a burning wreckage and parts to be taken—if the crew can find anything in the pieces. Recovery and headcounts are the main objective for the first several hours of being planetside, and once things have settled just enough, Captain Ira calls for a meeting and addresses those who are able in person to explain the situation. He draws a rough map of the area and explains where he believes they are - according to the terrain - and where they must go. For anyone who’s listening, he describes things like an “Outer Gate”, an “Inner Gate” and “gate sectors”. Believing this to be the best course of action, all crew are asked to explore and gather what they think they’ll need to make the long journey towards the central point of the Hub. Because the MIDs are no longer working due to the lack of a network, the Captains distribute a newer tech called the TAB. It serves the same functions as the MID but is lighter, slimmer, and has the ability to stick to any surface.

WELCOME TO THE MIDWAY HUB

Now that the smoke from the crash has cleared, and injured crew have been tended to, the Captains get everyone ready for departure by explaining what they know of the Hub. Almost stone-like, the creators built a domed workspace in the largest solid space on the planet they could find. Gates are the only way inside, and anyone who catches a glimpse of the compound will see that parts of the dome are cracked. Yet, everything still appears to be relatively intact. The Midway Hub’s terrain is very rocky and difficult to walk on at times. Below the surface is a honeycomb of intermittently dense and brittle stone that makes travel difficult due to the unpredictable nature of what lies beneath the crew’s feet. Those who can develop the tech from what’s left of the debris might be able to create something to determine which route is the safest. Ships and small crafts can be used to fly, but landing is a problem—rocks jut up in sharp peaks and the clearer spots can't handle their weight. Vegetation is sparse, consisting of twisted dark gray thistles that have sprung up from cracks in the rock and burn when in direct contact with skin, and what could be considered small animals here can be seen scurrying away the closer crew get to them.

WEEK ONE
Crew are asked to hook cryo beds together and to use any appropriate vehicles that can be made or fashioned to fit the terrain to carry injured crew on the journey to the center of the Hub. Supplies are gathered, and the Captains, as well as any crew who want to, give the Moira a proper sendoff, heads bowed as they say goodbye to what’s been their home. Traveling starts out slowly, a line of a hundred-plus crew members making their way slowly forward. Stops are frequent, but camping for rest only occurs at night. Crew are assigned watch shifts, fires are built, injured tended to, and those who are able are asked to explore nearby caves and hunt for food.

Something akin to deer, though striped and only to be found in pairs, can be stumbled across at night. Throngs of dark purple mammels begin to follow the Moirans on their trip as well. They are friendly, curious, and eat the thistle. Meet the intelligent, watchful predators that aren’t easily scared away and follow the crew from a distance as if waiting to pounce. The thistle can be eaten, but only if cooked first, and those who sample the chewy plant raw will experience a burning sensation in their throat that doesn’t go away until the cooked version is consumed. During the first week, water can’t be found.

Anyone who does hunt, gather, or explore should make sure to that their TABS are on and it’s suggested that nobody goes alone.

Nearing the end of the first week, an Ingress can be spotted close by that crew can explore. If anyone dares to go inside, they will find the texture of the ground and surrounding walls to be rather soft. If inspected closely, crew will discover that what they originally thought to be rock is actually a living organism that’s fed off the energy of the Ingress it’s attached itself to. It’s not harmful and squishy to the touch. If pressed hard enough, it secretes a turquoise liquid with the consistency of water that might make a good substitute for that very thing.
WEEK TWO
When crew finally pass through the sector gates, a strange sensation encompasses them, and a depowering of sorts goes into effect. The creators put in security measures meant to put all visitors on equal footing as well as to protect themselves from harm. All crew will essentially have the strength and abilities of the average human. An unforeseen issue, this causes Captain Thán to slip into a coma as he is no longer able to continue to recover at a steady pace, and with the loss of the former Captain’s abilities, crew can no longer be brought back if they die. For the first time, all Moirans are subject to permanent death.

During this week of travel, broken ingress machines and parts will be found scattered among the rocks, and new crew will come through. Unfortunately, these Ingresses aren’t in good shape, and anyone coming through will be in varying states of distress—some physical and some mental. New individuals will either have suffered an age slip, growing older or younger than their original body, some form of body transformation (perhaps that shiny thing they were wearing is now part of them somehow), or an extreme weakness they had never been subjected to before arriving on the Midway Hub. The new people will be offered to join their group, once found, and seasoned crew will be asked to explain to them where they are going and what they know.

The rest of the week will be a mix of greeting the new arrivals and continuing to travel to the center of the Hub. The closer they get, the less frequently they’ll see animals, and more caves will begin to pop up.
WEEK THREE
Entering the third week of travel, settlements and houses begin to crop up and are prime areas for exploration and general supplies. Those who go inside may find items that have been left behind and evidence showing that those of varying species and cultures lived in the homes. Some appeared to have been scientists while others were explorers, but all living quarters are deserted. Crew who are less lucky in their search might come away with no fresh supplies, and others might walk into traps or safeguards left behind by previous tenants; these come in many forms, from mild paralysis to temporary unconsciousness. As there are more residences, there are also more caves. The entrances vary in size, and light sources will be needed to explore. Once inside, crew can find purple underwater streams, which can be consumed, and glowing surfaces. When crew drink the water, it temporarily restores powers, a few minutes tops, and then, extreme lethargy settles in for a couple of hours.

Further into the cave systems, crew will come across these lovely creatures that are attracted to sound and track through scent. They are highly dangerous and attack simply to feed. Killing them, though, is surprisingly simple as they are just as vulnerable and weak as everyone else. They are vicious in demeanor but only as strong as an average human.

The closer to the Inner Gate crew get, the less homes, wildlife, and more caves there will be.
WEEK FOUR
The Captains, aware that the crew is exhausted, stop and make camp for the first few days. Someone mentions that it’s the holidays where they’re from, and the Captains do their best to throw a party. Set up at the base of a cave, tents are built and fires roar. Soft music is played in the form of guitar, thank you Ira, and Cúrre brings out some legumes that taste like cherries when roasted. There isn’t much in the way of decorations, but crew are encouraged to dig through their pac-discs and contribute to the festivities.

After a brief respite, crew learn that the entrances to Gate A and Gate B are inside one of the caves but any signs or markings have long since worn away or been destroyed. Groups are split, TABS are synced, and crew explore carefully until an entrance is found. Crew discover Gate A first, and all crew are contacted to gather there. The Captains will remain at the cave entrance until all crew are accounted for, and then, they’ll enter through the gate together.

[He starts to say 'sorry' at almost the same time she does and then cuts himself off, letting her finish. He didn't mean to startle her. But then again, he never really means to. It just sort of comes with the territory.]

I think it's about the kind of memories you make in them. If you're just, like... killing time they don't matter so much.

[A long, very very incredibly dramatic sigh. Look, he isn't even heading closer to him or anything.]

I haven't even bloody got fangs anymore! What am I going to do, bite you with regular teeth? That's so inefficient.

[He... is not doing himself any favors here.]

Stop freaking out for one bloody second.

"I was never me in the first place." He let out a mostly humorless laugh. Being a clone made a complicated thing much, much more complicated. "But I can't say I've had any urges to go back there and pick up where I left off, so I must be cured."

Although it brought up a very good question. How would he know? Mantis could have told him, back then, but if anything were to happen now, well, he didn't have a psychic who was familiar enough with him to be able to tell.

"Back at that station, back then... it was sort of like the same thing, but hitting all at once instead of happening over time. It was... really hard to shake it off for a while."

He picked a cup up off a table, peering at it. "I once told Venom I wasn't like him, all those years ago. But maybe I was a bit more like him than I thought."

[He doesn't need to flex, his muscles are so great that they just explode out of his shirts...okay, no.

Nate just glances down and then back at Adrien, confused.]

If there's nothing else. It's better than starving.

[But she doesn't expect Loki to understand. He's a prince and she's an orphan from a war zone. Being able to factor comfort into her decisions is a novel thing.

She roots around in this cupboard a little more past boxes of food that have undoubtedly gone bad and finds 2 cans of soup and a can of indeterminate vegetables. At least, it looks like vegetables.

...someone else can have that one.]

What choice do we have without our abilities?

[personal profile] sketchycharacter 2016-12-12 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's not as simple as feeling a loss and then feeling comfort from friends. One doesn't balance out the other. Nate's spent years running from the harder emotions and he still knows that perfectly well.

But it's the best he or anyone can do, and it's better than nothing.]

No problem.

[ Well, if the man has the energy and lack of concern to be that bemused looking, Adrien wasn't going to force the issue.

If he'd learned nothing else about Nate over these past months, it was that the guy was pretty good at owning up when he needed help. And for those times when he wasn't, Adrien trusted Elena to keep Nate in line.

Shaking his head, he began to continue working on ... laundry of all things. ]

Was there something you needed?

If you can stomach it, you should try. [ Adrien suggested as he settled back on his heels and reviewed the scan of the tool. ]

We have nutrition bars, which will do the trick but we could all use the extra iron and nutritional value that comes from fresh.

[ After a brief moment, he glanced over the edge of the device and his expression looked somewhat, understanding. ]

Though I know the idea of eating isn't one that settles easily, given our circumstances.
prorenataa: (how the fuck do buttons work)

Adrien glanced over, taking in a quick breath as if he meant to say something. But instead of words, his teeth clacked together and he quickly looked away once again.

"Right, well. Don't forget to find yourself a buddy to take along. Especially if you're going to go out after dark."

[ It's true that any food they have will also have some water in it, but whether that's enough to get them by is another question. There's no end in sight as far as their journey goes, though they're approaching their supposed destination. Who's to say that there'll be any water for them there?

It'd be pretty pathetic if after all this, after the distances they've traveled, that they'd end up dying of dehydration.

When Miller offers the flashlight, Snake raises an eyebrow but takes it all the same. He isn't going to turn down something that's bound to be useful, and he assumes Miller has more where that came from. ]

Where'd you find this purple water?

[ It might be questionable, but if that's all they have, then Snake wants to know how to access it. ]
soldiergenes: (and fear rolls like thunder)

[personal profile] soldiergenes 2016-12-12 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Functioning doesn't mean much if it's going to buckle as soon as pressure is applied, although Snake can already guess how it'll go over if he tries to lecture another soldier who's got a few years on him. (Okay, more like a decade. Or more.) He can look mildly disapproving, but the easiest thing to do is just offer to come along.

He's hoping 76 won't be stupid enough to protest that, at least. ]

Better than you, from the looks of things. [ Snake replies bluntly as he double-checks his holsters, including making sure that the flashlight Miller gave him is there at his waist. ]

You wanna check the caves, right? We may as well partner up. [ It'll probably be a little more rigorous than their exploration of the tunnels back on the colony, but Snake's good for it. ]

[Standard? Standard. Elizabeth almost laughs hysterically because there is nothing standard about her. She wishes she was standard, she strives to be standard and yet at every turn this hellish trip in space has proven to her that she will never be standard. Can't have friends, they'll be sucked back into the Ingress. Can't lose her boyfriend and cry about it without generating four million tears all over the ship. Can't die, she'll wake up again with more surprises than she wanted.]

You just love calling me a hypocrite, don't you? Can't get enough of telling me how ridiculous and backwards my reasoning is. [Oh she's not done ranting, not by a longshot, and maybe it's because she absolutely loathes that word when it's applied to her. Just because it was true, it is true, and always will be true-- she sent a little girl to be imprisoned and exploited to get what she thought she needed, and she knew it would happen and did it anyway. How long was she going to be tortured for it? How many times would she have to die to prove she didn't just care about herself anymore?]

Well let me ask you this-- if you do something, and you get extremely negative feedback, do you try it again? Or do you figure 'Maybe I shouldn't do the same thing twice hoping for a different result'?

I was locked up and tortured because people were afraid of what I could do. That's 'standard user behavior' too, isn't it? To converge on and stamp out anything that scares the hell out of them? 'No, Elizabeth,' Miles said, 'The crew is different, they'll understand, they won't hurt you.'

...Just like they didn't try to kill you, am I right? [She lets that hang for a moment. Dealing with that situation had left more of a mark on her than he possibly realized.] Hypocrisy. Standard User Behavior.

...yeah, you're right. [She's always been killing time. Her tower was supposed to be her home, but she'd always wanted to be somewhere else. Paris was supposed to be a wonderful escape, but it had ended up being just a place without anyone to share it with. But she'd lived on this ship.]

You know, I've always been the head librarian. I was given an empty room and one hundred books, and I built the collection myself from day one. I would sleep in there whenever I worked later than I'd intended to. It was the first thing I'd built from nothing.

And I had a lot of dates on the observation deck. [She says that with a self-conscious smile, thinking maybe she's sharing a little too much.] ...yeah I think this was the first place I actually lived in. Leaving it behind and going somewhere new makes me wonder if I'll be able to feel the same way in a different place. Or if this was the first and last time I'd feel like I wasn't just 'killing time' in a place.

[Despite everything, it's still you.

Mettaton really wants to believe that Asriel's right. He wants to believe that nothing's changed, and that he's still the same guy who could pull off an entire show and make it look good, including anyone who he invited to the show.

He wanted to agree that he was the best thing since Glamburgers.

But he isn't.

Still...he truly appreciates Asriel's efforts, and there were some points that the young boss monster got right; like the fact that he had been trying to keep everything inside because he did care more than he let on. If he didn't, why bother trying to pretend he isn't broken?

Mettaton finally looks at Asriel, and although he's smiling a little, he looks fit to burst into tears.]

Maybe I will be able to believe that eventually. And even if I don't right now, it is such a lovely feeling, knowing that someone still believes in me when I can't. I am so terribly sorry that I said this, not because I didn't want to talk about it with you...but because it must serve as an awful reminder...

Caves. I can take you to them.

[He'd rather get away from this place and hopefully get something to wash his mouth out with anyway. He stops to use his borrowed hair-tie to pull his growing hair back again, getting it away from his face in a short ponytail, which would be more meaningful if he wasn't trying to blink the sting out of his eyes and not sway in place.]

I'll have to keep an eye out for more of those traps so I can disable them. We could probably use the parts to make our own. [Hopefully they'd be luckier than the people in the settlement.]

Dangerous in here.

[He shrugs--a statement of fact, but the gun does lower another fraction. It's not so easy for him to discount anything as a threat, but he's doing his best. His attention shifts fairly quickly anyway, from Elizabeth to the darker corners of the cavern. His environment scanner isn't picking anything up, but he knows how quickly things can change.]

Can't be too careful.

[personal profile] mylawn 2016-12-12 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah? So when did you start running with Talon? Before or after Ana?

[Nothing Reaper can possibly say to him anything he doesn't already know and hate himself for. There's a growl in his voice now, like he's done trying to play nice.

How many times had he asked this to himself? How long was Gabriel fraternizing with the enemy right under his nose? How deep did the betrayal go--did he have a hand in the way Ana was taken out?

She's touchy subject for both of them either way, and he shifts slightly into a position that will make it easier for him to stand and defend himself, if necessary.

[It occurs to him that he hasn't properly met Angela's dog, and takes the opportunity to do so while she continues to offer him pills and food. He bends, taking care not to aggravate his knee, curling his fingers around the puppy's ears and starting to scritch, suddenly completely preoccupied in carding gloved hands through soft fur.

He looks up, like he's forgotten she was talking to him in the first place.
]

It won't.

[Still used to refusing painkillers, though it seems she's going to insist on the bread, He brings himself back to his feet, taking the water and bread before taking a seat on the bed. 76 watches her carefully, making sure that she's turned away before he lifts his mask off just enough to fit the mouth of the water bottle underneath it.]

[personal profile] mylawn 2016-12-12 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah."

That much is obvious, though it's easy for 76 to see that there might be something else at play here. He withdraws his hand but keeps a close eye on Ginko, trying to pinpoint what might be an underlying cause of the lack of attention and subsequent tripping.

"Everything okay?"

He supposes it's not out of the question that some crew members are still vaguely traumatized from the crash landing--maybe that's what this is.
mylawn: (hhraaghrngh)

[personal profile] mylawn 2016-12-12 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I've got no idea what you're talking about, kid.

[He's still truckin. Still hauling this thing away. Still mostly ignoring Badou, except to tell him he has no idea what he's talking about.]

Kaidan wasn't happy with Nihlus for holding back the information about Shepard's clone, but if there was one thing he'd learned about, it was that everyone deserved the same chance.

After all, it didn't matter what race you were - you could be an utter dick no matter which race you belonged to.

"Nihlus," he said, calmly looking at the turian approaching him. His eyes flicked to what wasn't there, but he said nothing. The ship had been through hell, nothing really surprised him anymore.

I was thinking about it.

[Says the guy who is definitely already on his way to the caves. He nods and motions for Snake to follow him, activating the environment scanner in his visor before they even enter. Better safe than sorry.]

Don't know what we'll find, but it's better than sitting around the campsite.

[At Jack's word, Ana turns back and gives the visitor a one eyed smile.]

Is that your name? You can call me Ana.

[She was going to jump in first to be polite. And to shut down Jack from being too rude. That was something Ana wasn't going to put up with in the slightest.

Instead, she scoots a bit to the side to make some room.]

"I simply wished to talk, that is all. If you have a place where you would like to take a break, we can head there now."

She puts her own hand on her daughter's and smiles. Really, nothing pleases her more than seeing Fareeha's smile again. No matter how old she became, she was still Ana's little girl.
