the outer gate
"Open up, and let them in."

The Moira is no more.

With the damage done to the ship due to the timeslip, all that remains is a burning wreckage and parts to be taken—if the crew can find anything in the pieces. Recovery and headcounts are the main objective for the first several hours of being planetside, and once things have settled just enough, Captain Ira calls for a meeting and addresses those who are able in person to explain the situation. He draws a rough map of the area and explains where he believes they are - according to the terrain - and where they must go. For anyone who’s listening, he describes things like an “Outer Gate”, an “Inner Gate” and “gate sectors”. Believing this to be the best course of action, all crew are asked to explore and gather what they think they’ll need to make the long journey towards the central point of the Hub. Because the MIDs are no longer working due to the lack of a network, the Captains distribute a newer tech called the TAB. It serves the same functions as the MID but is lighter, slimmer, and has the ability to stick to any surface.

WELCOME TO THE MIDWAY HUB

Now that the smoke from the crash has cleared, and injured crew have been tended to, the Captains get everyone ready for departure by explaining what they know of the Hub. Almost stone-like, the creators built a domed workspace in the largest solid space on the planet they could find. Gates are the only way inside, and anyone who catches a glimpse of the compound will see that parts of the dome are cracked. Yet, everything still appears to be relatively intact. The Midway Hub’s terrain is very rocky and difficult to walk on at times. Below the surface is a honeycomb of intermittently dense and brittle stone that makes travel difficult due to the unpredictable nature of what lies beneath the crew’s feet. Those who can develop the tech from what’s left of the debris might be able to create something to determine which route is the safest. Ships and small crafts can be used to fly, but landing is a problem—rocks jut up in sharp peaks and the clearer spots can't handle their weight. Vegetation is sparse, consisting of twisted dark gray thistles that have sprung up from cracks in the rock and burn when in direct contact with skin, and what could be considered small animals here can be seen scurrying away the closer crew get to them.

WEEK ONE
Crew are asked to hook cryo beds together and to use any appropriate vehicles that can be made or fashioned to fit the terrain to carry injured crew on the journey to the center of the Hub. Supplies are gathered, and the Captains, as well as any crew who want to, give the Moira a proper sendoff, heads bowed as they say goodbye to what’s been their home. Traveling starts out slowly, a line of a hundred-plus crew members making their way slowly forward. Stops are frequent, but camping for rest only occurs at night. Crew are assigned watch shifts, fires are built, injured tended to, and those who are able are asked to explore nearby caves and hunt for food.

Something akin to deer, though striped and only to be found in pairs, can be stumbled across at night. Throngs of dark purple mammels begin to follow the Moirans on their trip as well. They are friendly, curious, and eat the thistle. Meet the intelligent, watchful predators that aren’t easily scared away and follow the crew from a distance as if waiting to pounce. The thistle can be eaten, but only if cooked first, and those who sample the chewy plant raw will experience a burning sensation in their throat that doesn’t go away until the cooked version is consumed. During the first week, water can’t be found.

Anyone who does hunt, gather, or explore should make sure to that their TABS are on and it’s suggested that nobody goes alone.

Nearing the end of the first week, an Ingress can be spotted close by that crew can explore. If anyone dares to go inside, they will find the texture of the ground and surrounding walls to be rather soft. If inspected closely, crew will discover that what they originally thought to be rock is actually a living organism that’s fed off the energy of the Ingress it’s attached itself to. It’s not harmful and squishy to the touch. If pressed hard enough, it secretes a turquoise liquid with the consistency of water that might make a good substitute for that very thing.
WEEK TWO
When crew finally pass through the sector gates, a strange sensation encompasses them, and a depowering of sorts goes into effect. The creators put in security measures meant to put all visitors on equal footing as well as to protect themselves from harm. All crew will essentially have the strength and abilities of the average human. An unforeseen issue, this causes Captain Thán to slip into a coma as he is no longer able to continue to recover at a steady pace, and with the loss of the former Captain’s abilities, crew can no longer be brought back if they die. For the first time, all Moirans are subject to permanent death.

During this week of travel, broken ingress machines and parts will be found scattered among the rocks, and new crew will come through. Unfortunately, these Ingresses aren’t in good shape, and anyone coming through will be in varying states of distress—some physical and some mental. New individuals will either have suffered an age slip, growing older or younger than their original body, some form of body transformation (perhaps that shiny thing they were wearing is now part of them somehow), or an extreme weakness they had never been subjected to before arriving on the Midway Hub. The new people will be offered to join their group, once found, and seasoned crew will be asked to explain to them where they are going and what they know.

The rest of the week will be a mix of greeting the new arrivals and continuing to travel to the center of the Hub. The closer they get, the less frequently they’ll see animals, and more caves will begin to pop up.
WEEK THREE
Entering the third week of travel, settlements and houses begin to crop up and are prime areas for exploration and general supplies. Those who go inside may find items that have been left behind and evidence showing that those of varying species and cultures lived in the homes. Some appeared to have been scientists while others were explorers, but all living quarters are deserted. Crew who are less lucky in their search might come away with no fresh supplies, and others might walk into traps or safeguards left behind by previous tenants; these come in many forms, from mild paralysis to temporary unconsciousness. As there are more residences, there are also more caves. The entrances vary in size, and light sources will be needed to explore. Once inside, crew can find purple underwater streams, which can be consumed, and glowing surfaces. When crew drink the water, it temporarily restores powers, a few minutes tops, and then, extreme lethargy settles in for a couple of hours.

Further into the cave systems, crew will come across these lovely creatures that are attracted to sound and track through scent. They are highly dangerous and attack simply to feed. Killing them, though, is surprisingly simple as they are just as vulnerable and weak as everyone else. They are vicious in demeanor but only as strong as an average human.

The closer to the Inner Gate crew get, the less homes, wildlife, and more caves there will be.
WEEK FOUR
The Captains, aware that the crew is exhausted, stop and make camp for the first few days. Someone mentions that it’s the holidays where they’re from, and the Captains do their best to throw a party. Set up at the base of a cave, tents are built and fires roar. Soft music is played in the form of guitar, thank you Ira, and Cúrre brings out some legumes that taste like cherries when roasted. There isn’t much in the way of decorations, but crew are encouraged to dig through their pac-discs and contribute to the festivities.

After a brief respite, crew learn that the entrances to Gate A and Gate B are inside one of the caves but any signs or markings have long since worn away or been destroyed. Groups are split, TABS are synced, and crew explore carefully until an entrance is found. Crew discover Gate A first, and all crew are contacted to gather there. The Captains will remain at the cave entrance until all crew are accounted for, and then, they’ll enter through the gate together.

What?! Why not?!

I bet I can make it work just fine!!
pidge_out: (ehhhh not really paying attention)

[personal profile] pidge_out 2017-01-06 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
Look, I don't know how it works, man!
forgeabettertomorrow: (son of a...)

[personal profile] forgeabettertomorrow 2017-01-06 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
Man you can't just show me that and tell me that I can't make it work! That's cheap! Low blow!

And I'm sure as hell not going to ask the Princess how they work because she'll never let me hear the end of it.

"Oh, Darin! So you finally want to know about Altean weaponry? Couldn't figure it out for yourself? Too hard headed to understand the science behind hard light shields? Perhaps if you asked me like a civilized person, I'd be more than happy to explain how they work~!"

[Yes, Darin just tried to do an impression of Allura, accent and all. He even made his voice sound as feminine as a someone of his size and stature could.]

[He then follows the impression up with a thunderous fart noise.]

Pass. I'll figure it out on my own!
pidge_out: (teeeeeasing yooooou)

[personal profile] pidge_out 2017-01-06 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
[Pidge totally snorts at that impression. All things considered, it's not... terrible. But it's a really, really good thing that Allura's not within earshot. She would throw him into the sunset and Pidge would just sit and watch.]

I mean, you can try. I just think it might be a Voltron Paladin thing. [Also she might want to taze him or something.]
forgeabettertomorrow: (you're kidding me)

[personal profile] forgeabettertomorrow 2017-01-06 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, that's it. I'm trying it.

Give it here. Gimme.

[He makes grabby hands at the bayard.]

Don't say I didn't warn you. [She's mostly teasing, but with her senses skewed, she really has no idea what might end up being dangerous. Usually the Force would guide her, but now... nothing. Every step was a risk, especially with the traps she had already seen sprung.

As for his question, she looks around briefly to take in the room. There wasn't much there in the way of things, a few odds and ends that proved people lived there once but left in a hurry, as well as some scientific looking devices she had never seen before in her life.]

No, I recognize a few things. [To prove it, she picks up probably the most basic and universally known thing in the room that she can find, just to mess with him.]

This is probably going to be revolutionary to you, but this is called a bowl. Some species even eat food out of them. Amazing, right? [...Sorry, Peter, you caught her in a sarcastic mood.]

[personal profile] divagated 2017-01-06 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
[Sometimes it's really hard not to facepalm when she's around him.]

So I'm going to take that as a no?

[But she's not heartless (and is more fond of Riptide than she'd probably admit), so when he creaks and coughs, a look of concern crosses her face.]

-- Are you okay?

[It's scary when Anakin isn't confident about something. Usually when she was unsure about something, she could look to him for an answer. Even if he didn't have one, he was great about winging it and hoping for the best. But it was hard to see the best in a moment like this, when part of who they were was just gone.

Which means, even as scared as she was, she had to put on her best brave face, because one of them had to keep it together, and he wasn't looking too hot.]

You don't think it was just us that were affected, do you? Because it's not just the Force, I can't sense with my montrals again either-- [which was getting really old, if you had to ask her. But if it's not just the Force, then reason would stand the rest of the crew were drained too. She's worried about Obi-Wan and the other crew she cared about, but given how much Anakin was struggling in front of her, he was still has her primary focus.]

Yes, so it would seem. [She can't help but scoff at the comment. While it certainly had it's bonuses (ie: Steve), it was really anything but. Honestly, she felt like she could use a vacation from this vacation.]

Welcome back. Though, I suppose I should probably just say welcome. Or do you actually remember your time here? [Tony hadn't, and as far as she could tell, most others that returned didn't either.]

Even though he wasn't Logan's particular Kurt, he still felt an odd connection to him on some level. Their initial meeting had been tumultuous, with no help from the strange cave monsters, but once they had been given a chance to properly exchange introductions and talk for a decent length of time, it felt nice to have someone to worry about him in his regressed state. He hated being this small though, suffering from the loss of powers and feeling useless, although he'd been consistently reassured that he wasn't.

"Are they vegetables?" His smile broadens and he reaches his left hand out to take another bunch of the seeds, leaning back one the right on as he pops them into his mouth.

He's hoping that once the effects of the Ingress wear off, he might resemble more of the blue-skinned 'Elf' Logan continues to call him; it's a long-shot, but he wants the older man to be as comfortable as possible around him.

The gold of his eyes flickers crimson, concern instantly creasing his features at the way Logan speaks of death - like he isn't afraid. His lips press into a thin line, but instead of mentioning that, he goes with something more determined sounding. "I will not let you be harmed."

[Varric let out a rumble of a chuckle, quickly accompanied by a smile. Weird looking as she was on the whole, the woman had a pleasant enough smile. And given where they had started their conversation, Varric took its presence as a compliment.]

Where I come from, you so much as breathe wrong and the rumor mill went nuts. [That was the Orlesian way, after all. Having set up his own vantage point near the most talkative of the bunch, he'd had a front row seat to the most interesting of gossip. It'd been fairly amusing, at least until the speculation centered around him.]

[Turns out, crying over the death of your best friend made for some interesting stories. It was only for the Inquisition's benefit that he'd stayed his hand.]

You'll have to teach me, then. And get a group together.

[Cards weren't nearly as fun without groups of people. Pair it with a dry game, and Varric was sufficiently bored. Enough so that drawing a card slipped his mind once again.]

It's not a no. Clu knows it isn't, and Rinzler bristles just a fraction at the pretense. Clu knows exactly why he's holding back—exactly what Rinzler is missing. Clu took it away. And the question (challenge) stands—does his admin care enough about this 'input' to loosen that grip, even for a moment?

The answer that comes isn't one the enforcer had expected. It's so perfectly infuriating he has no idea why. Rinzler stares, sound ticking a sharp, staccato beat of disbelief before he dips his head: a bow, precise enough to cut. No, Clu won't grant vocal permissions. Even to fulfill this task, he won't let Rinzler speak. But the cheat, the trick, the loophole he made to steal back his own words—suddenly, that's acceptable?

Whatever his programmer commands.

Motion, when it comes, is fluid and automatic; this is a liberty Rinzler's taken many, many times. One hand calls the prompt, the other reaching for the inputs as they rezz, and a dim grey textfield hovers to Rinzler's side. Both hands flit over the holographic keys, a gesture that takes him entirely outside his hard-trained defaults. Rinzler's aware of it, and for all the sarcasm, his helmet stays slanted just high enough to watch. If Clu decides he doesn't want this after all, Rinzler wants enough warning to...

(Run.)

...brace.

Clarify: situation.

The letters scroll out in the enforcer's own red-orange, easily outshining the dim circuits to their side. Which, not what—Rinzler might be irritated, but he isn't going to play dumb.

Hmmm, I don't know if I should give up my Christmas wish so easily. But for now, we can shelve it.

[ The amusement twinkles in her eyes, especially with that comic book mention— ironic, for a world-renowned hero to say. For someone on posters in children's bedrooms, on the walls, still featured prominently in museums. He was certainly one of her heroes. ]

Do comic books not speak to people of what is right and just? I assumed that was the whole point. To show that people who obtain power are more likely to use it for good and the protection of others than evil. That's who you've always been to me. Even when I was a little girl.

I'm fine. I'm fine, just went down the wrong way.

I don't mind lending you some of my tech when we find a place to settle, if it'll help.

[he carefully skates a little further into the cave, holding a hand out for pidge to hold onto for support.]

Most of ours now is hard-light based.

[personal profile] pidge_out 2017-01-06 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[She snorts and rolls her eyes, but holds it out for him to take as it goes back to its normal appearance.]

Fine. But if you run off with it, you're dead.
pidge_out: (yeah sounds good to me!)

[personal profile] pidge_out 2017-01-06 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
That'd be awesome! I've been wanting to get a closer look since I first saw it, you know.

[And what's with that hand, sir??? She's gonna pretend she doesn't see that as she follows along.]

As opposed to soft-light? What's the difference?

Supposed to be a functional Ingress. The thing that brought you here in the first place.

"Eighteen, nineteen maybe."

Depending on how much sleep he gets (which really isn't much). Either way, he says it so dryly that it has to be a joke. Right? He's joking.

Daryl's last words earned a soft chuff from the doctor. A sound that wasn't quite a chuckle but might indicate dry amusement all the same.

"Isn't that the way, so much of the time?" This was something of a rhetorical question, though he did look over at Daryl as he continued. "Keep moving, because time doesn't stand still and allow for much non-sense."

[ Though it would be natural to jump up and deny what Harry was saying about Nathan, Adrien held his tongue. Mostly because it dawned on him that for as well as he knew Drake, there were and awful lot of holes in the details. The stark memory of Nathan's 20 year old punk ass, sticky fingered self came to mind.

The scissors continued to do their job, though Adrien advised in a dry tone. ]

Grab on down here, would you? I don't need an introduction to your junk at this time.

[ He'd pause to let Harry grab his pants, before he finished off the jean surgery. ]

I'm asking you, so let's go with your estimation.

[She can hit it without a scope, is what he wants to say, but this time he manages to keep his mouth shut. His body language, however, is another story--76 is leaning forward with interest, clearly engaged in the current topic. He might actually be excited. Venom has no idea how good she is, and now he's going to see it happen. 76 can't help but be a little overly-smug about the whole thing.

Venom might even be able to hear him grin behind his mask.
]

Show him.

[Said like she even needs him to tell her.]

Contrary to her innocent persona, Mei can tell when someone is kidding, and his delivery seems to suggest he is. She can kid around with people too, and it's fun for her because they usually think she's being earnest until she ruins it with her hardly concealed grin. She can't imagine this man grinning, even if he wasn't wearing the mask.

Regardless of this being a joke (right?), she thinks it's interesting and wants to know more about it. "What information does it give you?"

[ Pepper definitely hasn't learned of that yet; the vastly, insanely different timelines are enough of a shock right now on top of all this other madness. She breathes another quiet laugh, this time more amused and happy, even. ]

Hey, I'll take that. [ Chuckling a little, she lifts her cup a little in toast and sips. She may not be sure how this is possible, but she's not going to say no to it. ] Pepper Potts. But... maybe you already knew that?

[ There's an easy sort of familiarity to Peggy and the way she'd approached that makes Pepper wonder. She can't imagine Peggy and Tony haven't spoken, so... Little does she know that apparently she's been here once before. ]
