meet head-on
"Here I am at the end of the road and at the top of the heap.."

So far, things have been sort of normal for those aboard the Moira. Some of the crew have begun researching the Ingress, which has produced some interesting things as a result. There has also been the incident with Navigator Mana being separated from the ship while others have been deal with something worse as well as the on-going problem with Ploiatos. However, all of this isn't the problem.

The Ingress begins to work as it should after combined efforts from the crew and is honed in on the Midway Hub’s specific signature, but traveling there isn’t exactly easy. Since the Ingress hasn’t been working properly for so long, as the energy of it surrounds the ship, it enters the Moira into what the creators had called a “timeslip”. Looking outside the ship, this can be described as a multitude of different things. Inside the ship is a completely different story. Effects from Ploiatos have not disappeared, and some of them have even amplified due to the timeslip. Pieces of the ship are beginning to rot away and entire sections of the floor might just disappear from underfoot. Also, one other thing: ALL rooms have been unlocked, including a space that holds all of the missing shoes “taken” by the Ingress.
LET’S DO THE TIMEWARP (AGAIN)
The timeslip is not kind to those riding it through to its destination. Looking out any window will reveal worlds growing, thriving and dying in the blink of an eye. One may even glimpse faces of those they know in various states, perhaps even fragments of events that have not happened or maybe never will. Time is weird like that. But there are other things to be wary of in the time slip. Insomnia strikes without warning, and sanity will begin to trickle away as well. Some may even fall prey to body alterations as they travel through more damaged areas of the ship. Bodies may be altered by the energy of the slip, aging rapidly or changing in strange and uncomfortable ways that can’t be properly explained. These changes will happen suddenly and fade away without warning, but there is no getting used to it. People are not meant to be caught unprotected within a timeslip like this, and with the ship falling apart, there is nothing to keep them insulated from the side effects of the vortex.

They say if you stare too long into the abyss that the abyss begins to stare back, but in this case, even averting your eyes may not keep you safe from the dangers on all sides.
HE ATE MY HEART
Inside the timeslip, one thing is clear: anything and everything can happen. First Mate Egan will tell anyone who asks that this isn’t typical, which prompts Ira to tell the crew to exercise caution until they reach the Midway Hub. What should take seconds feels like weeks inside the slip, and packing for departure is encouraged. Outside the ship, time flits by, passing disorientingly fast, and for the first few days, it is the only notable malfunction.

Three days in, the crew encounter the first slip monsters. They come within hours of each other in two waves, and when they’ve boarded the Moira, they won’t go until killed or the ship has reached the Hub. The pool will have a new guest, the hallways are over run with small creatures, and the vents are swarming with massive foreign things. The slip is a dangerous place, and all crew are allowed to use any means necessary to stay safe. (All slip monsters can be used by any players; the monsters can attack each other, crew, themselves, the ship. It’s a literal monster throw-down.)
ISN'T IT IRONIC? DON'T YOU THINK?
As the Moira reaches the Midway Hub, the ship shudders out of the timeslip‐what should be a graceful stop is anything but. The ship shakes, the vibrations unending and splitting metal. The Ingress machine thrums, a heartbeat felt in every inch of the Moira as the energy crests out of the boundaries the creators had fashioned for it. Blue swirls of light curl up and out, breaking open the ship from the inside out. It begins to plummet, and evacuation measures are, once again, initiated.

Crew are instructed to get to transporters and crafts, leaving nothing and no one behind. The ship is breaking, falling fast and rough through the atmosphere surrounding the Hub. Evacuation pods are primed, anyone in cryo will be taken to the Cargo Bay for transport (unless alternate arrangements were already made), and the hatch in the Bay is opened for crew to escape through. The coordinates for meeting are sent to all crew, not far from where the Moira should touch down, and all medical staff are asked to be ready and waiting for when the ship lands.
GROUND CONTROL TO MAJOR TOM
Those who have already evacuated and have landed on the foggy, dark expanse of terrain that the coordinates have guided them to will see nothing around them except for the bright light of the Moira as it breaches the atmosphere and crashes into the rocky surface of the Midway Hub. One of the Captains, Thán, chose to stay on the ship until the last moment to make sure all crew were evacuated and was injured in the process. His reading on the IC Directory blips in and out, signaling that he’s somewhere in the ship’s rubble in need of immediate assistance. The MIDs stop functioning after the initial crash and other than reading vital signs, won’t come back on for a few hours (the network won’t work correctly in that time frame, sending videos and messages that it shouldn’t or not posting at all). The other Captains will ask for someone to take a head count and to report anyone who might be missing while all others will be directed to carefully seek out crew in the rubble and to gather any cargo that they can. Take inventory, set up a medical tent, check transporters and crafts, help crew, and stay together until everyone is accounted for.

[The ship might be overrun with monsters and falling apart, but this is what he missed more than anything—the two of them side by side, backing each other up and fighting the oncoming threat just like they used to. It’s like riding a bike, if riding a bike involved guns, and they still know how to move around each other, anticipating movement before it even happens, positioning themselves accordingly, watching each other’s six.

It feels pretty good. It feels better than most things.
]

It’s big, and it’s angry.

[It doesn’t change the fact that they are still in very real danger, most notably from the creature about to round the corner. They slip back into the roles of first and second almost effortlessly, and he’s flashing her a grin behind his visor as he readies his gun.]

Never was much for running away.

Is that so?

[She looks down at her arm, the blue glow coming from the nano-dispenser. With a little work, it wouldn't take much for the two of them to clear a safe zone. For a short moment of time, she decides against it but her mind changes. With what her partner had in mind, she could probably rebuild the charge fairly quickly.]

Let me boost and support you. Put in a little extra effort and others will be safer for it. Can you do that?

[Dire as the situation is, he’s always found some degree of thrill in the middle of a fight, and that much hasn’t changed. Ana, too, brings some of his old self out, and where ordinarily he might not have been able to stand it, right now it’s a little exhilarating.

He nods in agreement, following her eye to the syringe on her arm.
]

Think I can.

[He knows he can, and hefts his gun to indicate that he’s ready. She can’t see the smirk on his face, but it’s certainly evident in his voice. The hall echoes with the guttural noises of the creature in pursuit—they’ve got seconds to act, but he’s always thought they work best under pressure.]

Ready when you are.

Get in there and I'll keep you healed up.

[With some injury, she was sure Jack could probably wipe the floor with those creatures. With a boost and some support, this was liable to be more stress relief for the old soldier than anything else. Though stress relief that helped others be safer in the long run was going to be far more preferable.

Ana pulls her own rifle up so it's ready to be aimed and reaches out with her left hand. With a quick motion, the nanos are painlessly injected into Jack. Before he can rush off, though, she gives him a quick shove as a prompt.]

[Knowing that it’s coming always makes the nanoboost a little easier to take—it’s painless, but the sudden increase in performance can be a little jarring, even for someone used to functioning at a level that far surpasses a baseline human. The injection courses through him with blinding speed, and as she shoves him forward, he reaches up to activate his tactical visor.

The auto-targeting system doesn’t last for very long before it needs to be charged again, so he makes the most of it while it’s up. 76 locks on and switches from target to target seamlessly as each subsequent monster falls. With Ana backing him up, he has the freedom to be a little aggressive, not only tearing through the numbers, but pushing them backward in the process.

[One could almost say it was mindless at this point. Not that Ana would ever let herself go that far but keeping a good hand on situational awareness tended to come easily for her.

Every so often, she would pump a dart into Jack, mostly when she saw he took a random attack. But in between those moments, she was firing on the enemies, jacking the bolt back on her rifle, and firing again.

Between the two, there was no mercy.]

[personal profile] mylawn 2016-11-22 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[Their ruthless efficiency means that even after his tactical visor needs to cool down, they're still mowing through the numbers, pushing them back until the hallway is mostly clear. He slows down once the threat becomes less dire, picking off the remaining monsters and letting Ana watch his back as they finish. A second wave isn't out of the question, but for now they seem to have taken care of most of the problem.]

We should relocate while we have the chance.

[A hallway is a good choke point, but all it will take is threats from both directions. They should find someplace a little more defensible, or outright go on the hunt themselves.]
grammascookies: (ana6)

[personal profile] grammascookies 2016-11-22 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

[It definitely wasn't a time to rest. That could come after the threat had been entirely dealt with. She motioned back down a hallway.]

We can head back to a more open area and try to find others along the way. Either those that can help or those that need help.
mylawn: (pic#10433703)

[personal profile] mylawn 2016-11-23 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Cargo bay.

[That's the most open area he can think of, and he's quick to wave her on as he starts to head in that direction. A large, open area, with plenty of room to create a more defensible position for themselves.]

Come on.
grammascookies: (Default)

[personal profile] grammascookies 2016-11-23 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Following you.

[No hesitation from her. If Jack says it's a good place, then Ana will support him. Not only would it be bad to contradict a 'superior' in the field, Ana trusted his judgement implicitly. That and Jack had probably scoped out these places weeks ago to see what was best to hole up in. Really, it was his personality type.]
mylawn: (pic#10433717)

[personal profile] mylawn 2016-11-25 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
[He presses on, confident that even short one eye, she's got a better eye on his six than he could have. They make the journey largely uninterrupted, and then have the cargo bay at their disposal--provided nothing is waiting for them in there, of course.

76 is too paranoid to think that they're this lucky, so as soon as they cross the threshold, he directs them both to walk the perimeter.
]

Let's make sure we're clear.
grammascookies: (ana11)

[personal profile] grammascookies 2016-11-26 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

[Another order she could follow. But she did have a short interjection in the meantime.]

While we are looking, we need to find a spot overlooking this room and a way to get to it.

[The classic sniper position. Mostly so she could keep an eye on everyone and keep them healed up, if they got other people to join them.]

[personal profile] mylawn 2016-11-27 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
You get to the high ground. I’ll comb the floor.

[The implication being that she’ll be able to tell him if something’s headed his way. He’ll point out a few locations he thinks might work—between all the vehicles, large stacks of crates, and a catwalk system on the upper deck, there’s plenty to choose from.]

Let me know if I’m about to run into something unfriendly.
grammascookies: (ana13)

[personal profile] grammascookies 2016-11-28 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[Ana picks the catwalks in her head. But also looks for a retreat plan, mostly with piled up crates. She would prefer to find a spot where she could sit up on the catwalk and hop onto the crates if needed. And there is one position that works, which she points to.]

I will be up there. Do you have anything to use for communication or are we stuck with yelling?

[Either one works, especially because beggers can't be choosers.]
mylawn: (rrghbll)

[personal profile] mylawn 2016-11-30 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Use the MID.

[It's not a comm, but it's better than screaming at each other from halfway across the cargo bay. He gestures to his wrist.]

We've made do with worse.
grammascookies: (ana1)

[personal profile] grammascookies 2016-12-03 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Jack. The time where we had to rely on hand signals hardly counts.

[And there were probably plenty of times where the omnics had listened in to electronic transmissions and the team had to go a little more primitive in function. Still, she wasn't complaining about his answer. Just giving him a parting comment as they partially split up.]
mylawn: (pic#10463807)

[personal profile] mylawn 2016-12-04 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It counts.

[And they'd made do. He offers her a nod and a grin that she can't see before he takes off down the long aisles of crates and vehicles. He's surprisingly silent, for a man of his size, and he's quick to activate the environment scanner on his visor.

His immediate area seems clear, but he doesn't expect to stay lucky for long. Ana will see incoming threats before his visor even registers them.

Jack...

[She was speaking to him remotely, of course. And her voice was lowered so it wouldn't attract too much attention.]

...to your left past three larger crates. There are two creatures, both small.
mylawn: (pic#10436355)

[personal profile] mylawn 2016-12-08 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I see them.

[They're pinging on his environment scanner, but he knows that he can't discount the possibility of others.]

Safe to pick them off?

[His gun isn't exactly silent, after all.]
grammascookies: (ana4)

[personal profile] grammascookies 2016-12-08 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
They look alone. I will handle any stragglers who try to show up.

[She wasn't going to lead him in a death trap nor leave him hanging. That just wasn't...friendship.]
mylawn: (gurngbrlgll)

[personal profile] mylawn 2016-12-09 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[That's all he needs to know--that Ana has an eye on the rest of his surroundings so he can take care of the threats on the ground. 76 is quick to lead around the corner with the muzzle of his rifle, picking off the two creatures before checking to see if the rest of the pathway is clear.

Ana will tell him if it isn't, but he proceeds with caution anyway, heading to the far end of the hangar to secure the back entrances.
