the lucid disparity revisited
"Never be the first to arrive or the last to go, and never, ever be both."

By now, time has passed, and most of the crew have found some sort of comfortable groove with the natives of the unnamed island they crashed near. Partying, gambling and drinking, and more… Even the mysterious pool has given people who could answer its riddle insight in this confusing time. However, as the nights and days continue to progress and the parties begin to blur together, things are… odd. The hosts are still as kind as ever, offering anything and everything those at the temple-like building could ask for, but every so often, the world around them appears different. Clear, as if a fog had been lifted. Yet, it’s only a blink, and then, it’s gone, returning everyone to their regularly scheduled eternal party.

Down on the beach, the Captains are still as busy as ever working with those capable to restore function to the Moira. On the morning of the 20th, Navigator Manasseh’s vitals begin to slowly return to normal, her status on the Directory reverting to GREEN, and with it, life is brought back to the Moira. This, of course, means everyone is able to board the ship and leave, but most of the crew who traveled through the jungle and stayed at the party aren’t exactly willing to go just yet. Prior to this, a few of the crew who suddenly realized things were strange and that the people around them were acting strange - themselves included - approached Thán with this particular revelation, upon which Nathan Drake planned to bring back things from the temple to be tested for irregularities. Each sample returned to Cúrre does not alert her to anything abnormal, comprised of similar compounds—except for the water brought to her from the pool. Acting quickly, she reaches the same conclusion as a few of the other crewmembers do: that the water neutralizes the mysterious intoxication caused by everything on this unknown planet.

FROM UNDER THE VEIL
The combined efforts of the crew and Curre have resulted in an “antidote” being made from the pool water; crew members pass it around to those down on the ship and beach, then utilize caution while administering it to those at the party. The change happens slowly for most. A drink that was perfect only a little while ago is suddenly sickeningly sweet and no longer enjoyable. The food tastes wrong. The music no longer urges you to dance but instead reminds you that your feet are aching. The magic is fading, and as it does, the cracks in the facade begin to reveal themselves. The elegant city built into the rocks is faded and cracking at the edges. Nothing is as it seems, especially the hosts. Their eagerness to please now has an edge to it. They try and ply their guests with new food, drink and distractions, but they know when the game is up. Do you try and slip away when they’re distracted, or do you demand to know why they’ve done this? Do you dare to find out?

AS TIME GOES BY
Crew have begun to filter to the beach, and as the ship reboots, its systems expelling water and allowing it to float on the surface, all Moira-connected technology refreshes. MID devices, to those who check, will show that a year has passed since they crash landed on this strange planet. Those that did not join the party would not have been aware that so much time had passed as the planet seems to be under the influence of a blurring of time, probably due to the fact it is so close to the Luminous Sea. Crew would have gone through the motions and not realized that supplies were dwindling, and anyone who has themselves looked over in the Medbay will discover that they are, in fact, physically one year older. With the Moira finally functioning and with everyone on board, the ship finally begins to ascend and leave the planet behind.

The Captains are all working together to get the crew settled back on board and help those who might need some adjusting to this particular news. Since it has been such a long time, fresh supplies are badly needed, and the ship is directed towards the closest known place: the Mini Colony.

[ Dutch raises her eyebrows, looking at the assembled tank. It’s pretty. Andyr’s done good work with it. She hears ‘microwhale’ and her eyes dart back to Andyr, though. A whale? Well, a microwhale, but still. ]

That’s pretty impressive. Got a fondness for sea-life, do you?

[ She steps a little further into the room, careful not to step on any parts. ]

Want some help?

[ Dutch has always loved a puzzle. Granted, the puzzles usually come in the form of computer code that needs cracking and not physical bits and pieces that need to be put together. Of course, assembling parts has the potential to be dull, but at least she’ll get a good look at the interesting fish. ]

[ the answer for her offer of help is immediate: ]

Sweet fuck, yes. Please.

[ this is andyr aggressively shoving the pile of alphanumeric parts towards Dutch, along with the page of instructions he was about ready to start ripping apart. andyr has two things and two things only that he's good at: fish trivia, and murder. building tanks with eight million pieces isn't on that list.

but he isn't just shoving it off on her and flouncing. he tugs his legs up and lets his forearms rest on his knees, relaxing but watching intently at however she goes about this. and back to that first question - ]

Dunno if I'd really call it fondness. [ it's fondness. it's definitely fondness. ] Just know a lot about it.

[ She lets out a little laugh and stoops down, taking the instructions in her hands. Her eyebrows knit together when she realizes that they’re going to be more complicated than she’d originally thought. ]

My, this certainly is an interesting mess of an aquarium you mean to build…

[ Dutch studies the diagram for a moment, then digs around the pile for a certain part, holding it up and inspecting it to see if it’s the part she’s meant to use. Slowly, but surely, she gets to work assembling the aquarium. ]

And, ah, what inspired you to learn all of this?

[ She doesn’t make eye contact as she makes her inquiry. Dutch is busy now building this crazy complicated aquarium. Sometimes she stops herself to disassemble parts because she’s put them together wrong. This isn’t exactly an IKEA level of difficulty. ]

[ Andyr snorts, shrugging his shoulders. ]

I didn't make the order for it. Just showed up with my name on it.

[ not that he hadn't wanted an aquarium, but he didn't really want five million of them. then again, he's not so upset about getting to have an entire room full of fish now. just the assembly part is a pain in the ass.

he watches as dutch goes about putting parts together, studying how she looks at them and slots them together, how she compares to the page. he might have zero talent for anything else in his life, but that doesn't mean he isn't willing to learn. however slow he may be at it. for the question, he shrugs, still watching her hands. ]

Boredom, I guess. For a year or so it was all I had to do, outside of count ceiling tiles.

[ She nods, still busy figuring out the diagrams and instructions. They’re really quite straightforward, but there’s so much there. Dutch doesn’t stop examining the instructions and assembling as she speaks. ]

I got some things, too. Baseball equipment. You ever play baseball?

[ Dutch lifts her eyes just slightly as she asks the question then looks back to her work, turning a part in her hand, wrinkling her eyebrows like she’s confused about where it goes. She picks up the instructions and tries to find it on the diagram. ]

Where the hell are you?

[ She’s asking the part, not Andyr, and of course she doesn’t expect a response, but she traces over the diagram with her fingertip until she finally finds something resembling the part in her hand. ]

Ha! There!

[ She looks up at Andyr with a triumphant grin on her face and looks back down to fit the part into it’s rightful place. When she looks back to him her grin has tamed itself slightly. ]

You mean literally count ceiling tiles? Were you in the hospital or something?

Nah, it's ancient, where I'm from. [ baseball, that is. it's 3451, and there isn't really much that's lasted though the last 1,400 years as far as cultural pinpoints go, especially given America really isn't America anymore. He frowns a moment, thinking on it. ] They might still play it in East Coast.

[ which is the name of the territory that know holds Boston and New York. Places Andyr's never been, as he's never left the South, or even Louisiana. His eyes follow Dutch as she digs for parts, turning his head some to look at the diagram she's studying. once it's slotted into place, Andyr's brows raised, impressed, as he nods. ]

You're already better with this shit than me.

[ which isn't a high bar to pass, really. but she does seem to have some kind of idea of what she's doing.

as for where he was before, ah. that's... a longer answer than just 'yes' or 'no'. not one he's adverse to giving, as it's andyr's belief that suppressing knowledge of this stuff is as bad as being part of the act, but he also isn't going to shove the horror of his world down someone else's throat if they didn't ask for it. ]

Sort of. Half hospital, half prison.

[ that's a clean enough answer, right? ]

[ Dutch nods. ] Different timelines. I’m starting to get used to the most extraordinary things. Hanging around people from the future is completely commonplace. Ridiculous. [ She sighs and picks up another piece of the aquarium, turning it in her hands until it looks familiar to her. ]

I just think of it as one of those three dimensional puzzles. [ She snaps a part into place and smiles to herself at another small success. Building this aquarium, as it turns out, is very good for Dutch’s ego. She studies the instructions silently for a moment or two, but when she hears ‘half hospital, half prison’ she looks up at Andyr somewhat concernedly. What sort of world did he come here from that he was a prisoner? He seems like a perfectly delightful fellow. It occurs to her that he could be talking about something like a locked ward. ]

Oh. Were you there against your will?

[ She could kick herself. Dutch is never this nosy, but the story leaves so many questions unanswered and she finds that she cares just enough about Andyr to want to know more about him.

When it occurs to her that she’s stopped working she immediately starts grabbing for the next piece she’d been looking for. ]

Right? This place seems like a drug trip half the time.

[ people from different times, different earths, different dimensions. Aliens, people with the same face but different lives. Crazy crap. Andyr doesn’t really want to think of what the implications for possibilities that means, so he just does his best not to consider any of it for too long.

Andyr nods, thinking back on the little 3D puzzles they used to get in school sometimes. The memories are fuzzy, and something about that bothers him, so he skips from it quickly, onto what she’s asking.

Which-- brings an abrupt, barked laugh from him, and a rueful smile. ]

No one there actually wanted to be. Except maybe the idiot clones that never got to go outside, and didn’t freakin’ know better.

[ like miray. But even miray had the sense to be miserable. Just thought this was the best they’d ever get. ]
