I got some things, too. Baseball equipment. You ever play baseball?
[ Dutch lifts her eyes just slightly as she asks the question then looks back to her work, turning a part in her hand, wrinkling her eyebrows like she’s confused about where it goes. She picks up the instructions and tries to find it on the diagram. ]
Where the hell are you?
[ She’s asking the part, not Andyr, and of course she doesn’t expect a response, but she traces over the diagram with her fingertip until she finally finds something resembling the part in her hand. ]
Ha! There!
[ She looks up at Andyr with a triumphant grin on her face and looks back down to fit the part into it’s rightful place. When she looks back to him her grin has tamed itself slightly. ]
You mean literally count ceiling tiles? Were you in the hospital or something?

[ which is the name of the territory that know holds Boston and New York. Places Andyr's never been, as he's never left the South, or even Louisiana. His eyes follow Dutch as she digs for parts, turning his head some to look at the diagram she's studying. once it's slotted into place, Andyr's brows raised, impressed, as he nods. ]
You're already better with this shit than me.
[ which isn't a high bar to pass, really. but she does seem to have some kind of idea of what she's doing.
as for where he was before, ah. that's... a longer answer than just 'yes' or 'no'. not one he's adverse to giving, as it's andyr's belief that suppressing knowledge of this stuff is as bad as being part of the act, but he also isn't going to shove the horror of his world down someone else's throat if they didn't ask for it. ]
Sort of. Half hospital, half prison.
[ that's a clean enough answer, right? ]

I just think of it as one of those three dimensional puzzles. [ She snaps a part into place and smiles to herself at another small success. Building this aquarium, as it turns out, is very good for Dutch’s ego. She studies the instructions silently for a moment or two, but when she hears ‘half hospital, half prison’ she looks up at Andyr somewhat concernedly. What sort of world did he come here from that he was a prisoner? He seems like a perfectly delightful fellow. It occurs to her that he could be talking about something like a locked ward. ]
Oh. Were you there against your will?
[ She could kick herself. Dutch is never this nosy, but the story leaves so many questions unanswered and she finds that she cares just enough about Andyr to want to know more about him.
When it occurs to her that she’s stopped working she immediately starts grabbing for the next piece she’d been looking for. ]

[ people from different times, different earths, different dimensions. Aliens, people with the same face but different lives. Crazy crap. Andyr doesn’t really want to think of what the implications for possibilities that means, so he just does his best not to consider any of it for too long.
Andyr nods, thinking back on the little 3D puzzles they used to get in school sometimes. The memories are fuzzy, and something about that bothers him, so he skips from it quickly, onto what she’s asking.
Which-- brings an abrupt, barked laugh from him, and a rueful smile. ]
No one there actually wanted to be. Except maybe the idiot clones that never got to go outside, and didn’t freakin’ know better.
[ like miray. But even miray had the sense to be miserable. Just thought this was the best they’d ever get. ]
