"Jim! Bucky Barnes!"
Kaz was searching for one of them. It made the hunt hard when you couldn't reliably yell a man's name because it was shared with three people. It made it rough.
His knee was already hurting again from climbing rock or poking around wreckage. The dogs weren't finding much: admittedly Joy was the only one of his even remotely trained to search. Mama was mostly tagging along nervously, unsure and sticking close to her person.
Neither him nor them were finding much. And as he looked, the more an uneasy feeling was settling into the pit of his stomach.

"Miller, what is your SITREP?" It's clear he was looking for someone, and she was more than willing to help, but he also looked a little worse for wear, the way he was favoring his leg.
no subject
And this was very concerning, it meant he couldn't even check to see who was around.
"I'm looking for a friend that went missing. The assistant head of defense. Can't find him out there." Which he knew was obvious from how he'd been yelling, but context never hurt.
no subject
"What's he look like?" If they were lucky, maybe it's someone she's helped out earlier. Otherwise, she can do aerial reconnaissance.
no subject
"21 years old. Looks younger. Acts it, too. Might call you "doll" if he sees you."
no subject
"I haven't seen him yet, but I can scout ahead and take an aerial view. Where have you looked already?"
no subject
Their MIDs weren't working properly or he'd ask her about helping map the area. Not exactly something they could do easily at the moment. It was a utilitarian thought, meant to bury his concerns under something functional.
"He's a good guy. Tries to be a real hero. If he's up and walking, he'll be trying to help people."
no subject
"There's a few people over this way."
no subject
Most importantly, he wanted a life in general for the young man. And that required him to have made it through the crash.
"I'll head that way, then. How many injuries have you happened across?"
He envies her mobility, he really does. He wishes more things like that could be invented by the Diamond Dogs R&D team. Especially right then, when his leg was aching and he had to make his way over in the direction she indicated.
no subject
She wasn't sure if she could carry him entirely, but she could offer a shoulder to lean on, or to try and find materials to make a splint, or something. "I have training in field dressing."
no subject
"Sorry. I've been on my feet for almost a full day now. Sooner or later it puts a lot of pressure on my prosthetic."
Overwork had always been one of his weak points. "I'll sit down for a bit and take pain medication of some kind when we get there."
no subject
"Then lets go so we can get you settled."
Admittedly, she could use a breather too.
no subject
He'd toughed it out as long as he could, really. But even he had to acknowledge when he needed to spare himself for a bit of rest (as much as he seemed to enjoy working himself ragged).
"Haven't seen any attackers since the crash. I guess they went when with whatever space travel being done. When things got bad, we should have all immediately went to the transports and defended from there. Hindsight is 20/20, I guess."
no subject
"Have you seen any of the captains?"
no subject
"Still doesn't sit right with me that we couldn't stop it." Guilt didn't sit right with him.
no subject
"What's done is done. We've got to focus on the challenges ahead of us. I don't think we will gain anything from speculation on what we could have done."
no subject
But Kaz was a creature of hindsight anymore, a dweller on the past. And there was so much they could have done better. A drop in the bucket to oblige all the I told you sos that would inevitably happen. "We still have the ship for salvage. Have no idea what we'll do after that." Was this actually where they were headed?
no subject
"Someone good, I hope?" She smiles a little. I'd she knew who Miller was referring to she would grabbed been flattered, since she's come to rely on Ahab for advice and training.
For now though, she misses over his comment. "We'll search for civilization, find out where we are, maybe if we're lucky we can get communications online or at least find a way to broadcast a distress signal."
no subject
"Lets hope there are no allies of the Cadacuns or anyone out there listening. That's the last thing we'll need, after all that... Wait. Hold on. I need down."
He admitted defeat, letting go so he could sit. Holding onto his shoe, it seemed like the lower half of his shin just disappeared, pants leg going limp. If he turned off the prosthetic for a bit, the pain might stop. But even the break made him irritable at himself. He'd have to work on that. But just a couple of minutes sitting, that would help a little.
"Have you noticed anything unusual about the terrain yet while you've been scouting?"
no subject
"I haven't seen anything out of the ordinary, yet; it seems to be your standard forest. On the downside that also means I haven't noticed any signs of civilization or sentient population. At the very least, it's promising that we didn't accidentally kill anyone in the crash."
Animals, yes, but people that could turn against them? Hopefully no.
no subject
"Guess I shouldn't even joke about that. It can happen, after all."
He shook his head at the thought tiredly. After the violent mixed bag they'd been dealing with for whatever indeterminate period of time just passed, encountering things that were historic or fantastical had lost its novelty.
no subject
"I doubt it would; that would be giving us the advantage."
no subject
That was almost genuine optimism. Or what he could pretend was.
After watching her move her hair out of the way, knead at what looked like a painful crick, he offered his own hand. "Let me help with that. Can't imagine that suit is easy on you." And given the attacks, he'd wager she'd been wearing it for a while.
no subject
"If you can even get past my jets. Great in the air, not so well suited for the ground."
Even just sitting, though, affords her some small amount of relief that she'd been denying herself.
"I'm glad, too, that I am among capable people."
no subject
"You should probably take a longer break when we make it back. We had a lot to deal with. Whatever the hell that mess was." Thing after thing after thing. "Didn't seem like there was an end to 'em. And some people knew what they were, and other people didn't. Like they came from a lot of places."
Not that their techs had the means to figure out what was going on anymore.
