"Follow, and the universe will open where there was once walls."

With the Collectives now behind them, the atmosphere of the Moira seems to have subsided into the general daily grind of ship living. Shifts pass, meals are served, and the occasional tiff continues to hum in the background. However, whether new or veteran, today is not like any other day the crew have seen or experienced so far. The thrum of the ship is a normal one. Those aboard feel it, know it. In fact, whether you realize it or not, the pulse of the engine, its wings, and that of the Ingress is a constant, consistent buzz in the back of your mind and under your feet. Even during planet excursions, it’s almost like a pull to draw you back to the ship and ground you to the present moment. It’s familiar.

It’s late, in the early hours of twilight, that everything begins to feel off. The Moira suddenly begins to drift, tipping gently to one side and resulting in everything on board beginning to roll and tip over. So those in their beds may abruptly find themselves thrown onto the floor. Those walking from a shift back to their rooms or elsewhere on the ship will likely be thrown against a wall. The movement is drastic, but the ship’s systems realign the Moira within several minutes of the event. Anyone near the Ingress room will hear the Captains arguing with one another, and those that go closer will see that Captain Manessah is standing in the middle of a non-functioning Ingress.

It’s off, with no swirling light, and they can’t seem to get it to come back on. It’s clear to anyone that comes by that the Captains are worried, bordering on frightened by the fact that it doesn’t seem to want to restart itself—if that was even a possibility of the Ingress at all. They begin to disagree with each other on the best way to fix it, their spoken language changing to something that the MID can’t translate. Captain Thán exits the room in a rush, not stopping to speak to anyone, and the other two continue to try and find a solution to this problem. Not long after, they send out a ship-wide message informing crew that they are relieved of their duties for the rest of the week except for basic cleaning and cooking. Any personnel with experience in technology and matters relating to the Ingress are asked to come to the Ingress room.

Turn It Off, Turn It On
Anyone who comes to the Ingress room will be asked to clean, repair, and examine the Ingress. The Captains don’t say why it’s urgent that it be fixed, but it’s obvious that they want it to be done immediately. Crew members can assist one another in taking the coolant systems apart to maintenance them or to suggest ways to fix the machine. After a few hours of steady work, that familiar thrum will be felt under everyone’s feet and the Ingress machine will power back on. However, both the Captains and the crew will notice one startlingly obvious difference: the moving blue light and energy has darkened around the edges. There appears to be a person standing just on either side but can’t come through. The shadow remains there no matter what anyone does, and the colors flicker and alter depending upon which crew member is the closest.

And like most things, they always come in pairs. Later that evening, a broadcast is received via Navigation that’s translated across the entirety of the Moira, both over an intercom and over the MID. While it is received as a text, a nondescript voice announces it promptly:
Greetings. We are sending this as a formality on behalf of our sister, Caducus Primary and its survivors. In accordance with our beliefs, the travesty that has occurred in the past must be made equal. That equality means lives given for those taken. While terms are unlikely to be made and agreed upon, they will be heard. A decision to flee will be seen as an act of guilt and cowardice. This is the only warning that will be made. You will be given time to prepare for our approach, People of the Vessel Moira.

With this message received, Navigation also informs the Captains, who then relay to the crew, that a ship bound from Caducus Secondary are within range and have made it clear they are here to settle a “debt” by attacking. Members of the crew are being divided into randomly assigned teams - which can be found temporarily listed in the MID under the directory - and encouraged to discuss plans to help prevent and preserve the lives of those aboard. Reporting these ideas will be the responsibility of elected team leaders, and a final decision will be made shortly thereafter by the Captains.

That's fine by me. Hell, that's better. Ideally, it won't even matter, will it?

[And it's true. He has no real interest in demands -- not for anything more than he already wants. As long as that is provided, he's happy to do just about anything to ensure it.

Call it lack of trust, call it being hurt before, but Sans has a feeling that if there's a scarcity of life boats, it would be human women and children first.]

Think of it like an insurance policy. I pay, you just have to give me a promise. Sounds like it works out in your favor. [He bends down, assisting her.] Lead the way, impossible girl.

You don't need to call me that.

[She says it with a hint of upset, like it bothers her to have people call her it. She doesn't say anything more than that about it though, and leads the way back to her room with a much calmer demeanor than she's displayed to him only a few minutes prior. When they step into her room, the books in her arms are tossed onto her bed, and she takes the time to raise her arms up above her head and stretch.]

There's only a few names I'd like you to keep an eye on. There's someone on my team, I think their name is Zam? They want to potentially harm Bruce, and I want to know if they get close to trying. If you can also watch Niko and let me know if anyone is bothering him, I want to make sure he's free to speak to the Caducans and tell his stories when it comes time. I promised him I would, and I need to chase off anyone that's getting in the way of that. Ryuuzaki might need to be watched, to know what it is he's doing going to all the team meetings and what his involvement is with everything. If they don't keep you busy -

[She laughs a little, because she's amused by the fact that keeping an eye on the both of them may not keep someone busy enough.]

Several friends of mine are missing. I want to look for them myself, but I don't have the time to do it just yet. If I gave you their names, could you give it a go?

My mistake.

[Sans follows suit along with her, setting the rest of her books down next to the disorganized pile. He joins it soon after, leaning on the edge of the bed.]

Zam, Niko and all that encircle him, plus Ryuuzaki? I can do that for ya. [And whether he is or not, Sans certainly sounds confident in the idea.] Who are your friends?

[Sighing, she rubs at her face for a moment. She's exhausted, and now that she's in her room, she can let it show a little more.]

Focus most of your attention on Zam. I don't want her trying to harm Bruce. Guarding Niko can be some of my focus, and Ryuuzaki's trustworthy enough. I just want to know what it is he's doing dipping in with all three groups.

[That's the priority here, and she knows it.]

Jack Sparrow, a pirate named Barbossa, and the other Loki are the men I'm looking to find. I doubt they'll turn up, but I'm hoping...

[Frowning, she gives a light shrug of her shoulders.]

Don't know what in the hell I'm hoping, really.

[Sans didn't know Zam well, but he at the very least knew her opinion on murder and those that commit it. At least, against kids. Granted, Bruce Banner was decidedly not a child, but Zam was also not stupid. She wouldn't go off damaging her best bargaining chip.

That being said, better safe than sorry. A job was a job.]

I feel ya. Shouldn't be too hard. I think you might be a little on edge -- we're a nice group of people, once you get past all the tension and animosity.

[He grins all the wider. Though the mention of her friends give him pause.]

Ah... nobody told you about the MID function yet, did they?

[Sans checks it daily, since losing Lara. Needless to say, he already knew exactly where her friends were and what their fate likely was.

He couldn't say he was disappointed to have less work, but being the one breaking the news wasn't exactly a relief.]

What MID function?

[Not only does she sound tired, but her voice goes very small, allowing a little fear to show through for her first time since arriving on the ship. This all just proves to her that getting close to others here is a bad choice, because you don't know what will happen. People leaving her is her biggest insecurity, it's just as bad as others turning her away. She absolutely loathes it, even if it isn't exactly the fault of those here who have vanished.]

They should be there, but they're not. The Ingress isn't even working properly, where could they have gone?

[Suddenly, Sans finds himself presented with a certain feeling of deja vu.

Where are they, what happened to them, when will they be back?

He could tell her. He should tell her. She'd find out anyway.]

Well, uh... y'know, I'm pretty sure they bailed. Hanger bay's pretty much open to whoever wants to come and go. If they're not showing up on your MID, pretty sure that means they're out of the Ingresses's range.

Who knows, maybe they just went on vacation?

[He doesn't tell her.]

[She stares over at him, looking like she doesn't believe a word of that.]

Bless you for trying.

[Smiling a little, she gives out a tired laugh, and takes a moment to pull her hair up into a high ponytail. She needs to fidget with something or she'll start feeling anxious, talking about something where she doesn't have the answers.]

They're gone. You don't have to avoid telling me, I would've been fine if you had just said so.

[Because she's perfectly chill about everything. Obviously.]

[Well. She's not as easy to convince as Papyrus -- if Papyrus was ever as easily convinced as he seemed. Hard to say, really.

He shrugs, letting out a lungless sigh.]

What can I say? I'm bad with bad news.

[Her smile becomes more genuine as she walks over to put both of her hands on his shoulders.]

Thank you for trying.

[Which means she probably should show gratitude or something beyond just a smile. And since she's recently cornered him in the hallway, she lifts her hands up pretty quickly so he doesn't think she's trying anything else aggressive. She had been considering hugging him but since he was intimidated by her five minutes ago, probably not a great move. So she awkwardly coughs and reaches up to tuck some hair behind her ear.]

Anyway - [Awkward. She rocks back on her heels a bit, trying to act like it isn't.]

You never did tell me your brother's name. I'd like to meet him, when I'm not so -

[Intense. Stressed. Frazzled.

She ends up shrugging instead of finishing that thought. She's sure he'll be able to fill in the blank.

[Awkward is certainly a word for it. Sans casts a glance their way before she pulls away, brow bone quirked with a fond skepticism.

She sure could pull off cute, he'd give her that.]

Heh, yeah. Though I'll be honest, he might like you best this way. He's pretty... energetic, himself.

[He knows a subject change when he hears one, but the girl's been through enough. Indulging her feels important. It's what he'd want if their positions were reversed, after all.]

His name's Papyrus. You'll like him. [It's not a suggestion so much as a statement.]

[personal profile] bosswald 2016-07-12 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[She hears his brother's name, and nods, but her attention is acutely focused on what he's previously said. It takes her a few moments to decide whether or not she should say anything on the matter, but her mouth generally has a mind of its own so she finds herself speaking before she's even done considering what it is she wants to say.]

When you say he might like me best this way, what do you mean? You say it like I'm different people.

You said when you're not so... [He trails off, just as she had, waving his hand in a et cetera motion.] Anyway, Pap likes people no matter how they are, that's all I'm saying.

You're fine, kid. [He gives her a quick bonk on the shoulder.] People around here are pretty forgiving. ... About some things, anyway.
