THE HAUNTING
The onryō starts making her first patrols in the early morning when most people are comfortably asleep and not wanting to wake up. The sense of unease she creates is palpable, and initially she just looks at who is around. She chooses in the dark who she should be angry with, who is a foolish idiot for making her mistakes and who is an ignorant soul who ignored the anguish of someone else's attention. Everyone else is unimportant.
Occasionally, rarely though, she'll stop and look at something. Usually carved or drawn or molded, something someone used their hands to create. The very faintest of scraps of who she used to be, though that's barely significant. There's not enough left of that self to deter her from stopping more of the foolishness that damned her.
The Noh mask appears the same day, the same time as her first investigations get underway, and there it remains, conveniently close to where the Ingress once was.
The mask will always return to this original state the moment it's not being observed. It'll be returned to its resting place. If it's been destroyed or altered or damaged in any way, it'll be back to the state that it was when previously examined (even permanent marker would disappear).
It's made of cypress wood and is covered in layers of chalk paint and a glue-like sealant. On the back is a raised signature, indicating that it was handmade by an artisan. On closer examination (like swabbing or enhanced senses or super scanner) there's a bit of smoke damage, but otherwise it's not been worn many times. The straps attached are hardly frayed at all. However it's aged, it's not from scuffing or rough handling.
There might not be much time to notice or to bother with it, though. Not when people are being hunted in the shadows, when quick hands reach out from cabinets or a hunched form hangs upside down from underneath a table, waiting for someone to sit down too close to her.

I almost beat it this time.
[The words are spit out, due to her anger toward herself for not accomplishing her goal. If this were Transigen, she would've been punished. But it isn't, and she knows she won't be punished for failure. That doesn't stop the sting of it from upsetting her. Or from keeping her from hiding the fact that this isn't the first encounter with the demon that's out there.]
Next time, I will win.
[If she's bothered by all the blood and healing she's doing, it doesn't show.]

Take a seat, let me look at your injuries.
[She's no doctor, but she can tell if Laura will need one. Maybe.]
Next time? Oh, Laura- you can't go after this thing alone! We don't even know what it is- it could kill you next time!

[She protests, giving a shake of her head. The stubborn nature was inherited from her father, just like her gifts were.]
I will heal, just like daddy does.
[The only reason she calls him daddy in front of Rogue is the fact that they're basically like family. Rogue's been claimed by her dad too, so they're like sisters. And because of that, she sits still for the moment and lets herself be looked over. Sure enough, injuries are healing over. The blood still remains, but that can be washed off.]

I know you will- [Actually, she'd completely forgotten about that, in the moment.] But I've seen Logan get really hurt- Bad enough that even he could have died. I'm not about to let something like that happen to you, Laura.
[She gingerly examines what looks like the worse of the wounds, but true enough, her skin had already knit itself back together. The bruises were healing as they spoke.]

Everyone dies.
[She softly says, looking away.]
It is not good to live a very long time. Not with metal bones. They poison your blood and make you want to die, every single day.
[That's what her dad went through for so long.]

She presses her lips together, and looks down.] I... I know what that feels like.
[Not the metal bones, but the wanting to die every single day. There were days when getting out of bed was all but impossible. She tried to hide it, but some days were easier than others.] You and Logan, sugar, you're both so strong. But you don't have to be every day.
