November World Travel
Who: Anyone and everyone
When: Nov. 9 and onward
Where: Kaittos
What: A new path opens up
[While the Trials themselves are intended to be logged here, an update will offer more information on the Awakening experienced by the successful. This will come out on November 23rd! For questions, please head to the recent mod update.]
When: Nov. 9 and onward
Where: Kaittos
What: A new path opens up
Without warning, the silvery light that appeared to bring new people from other worlds and old items from home appears once more, and this time it lingers, forming portals as tall as an average human near each of the three Ingress shrines. The location does not appear to be a coincidence; this time, the portals are translucent, revealing the destination on the other side. Instead of taking Avagi's residents to the future, it will take them to another world. If they step through the portal, travelers will find something far different from where they've been living this last month: Kaittos, a peaceful world containing one large land mass and a scattering of lived-on islands across a clear blue ocean. On the mainland, a large city-state occupies the central region and southern coast and resembles what some travelers from some versions of Earth might know of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. ![]() Bustling and lively, the city is clean and well provided-for due to the temperate climate and the bountiful natural resources found on its northern side; orchards, farms and forests extend into the distance, butting up against a small mountain range. The technology level is low compared to Avagi, with carriages and candles in place rather than cars and electric lights, but the craftsmen of the world have managed some very impressive mechanical feats. Kaittans, the local residents of the world appear somewhat humanoid, but the bipedal race has hooves rather than feet, silvery skin and three eyes with vertical pupils. Although there is no sign of any other sentient species in the world, the locals are nonetheless excited to meet their guests, rather than suspicious or afraid; for some reason, they are not surprised that aliens exist, merely that they are here. In the weeks to come, the stabilized portals will provide a respite from the more confined lifestyle aboard Avagi. Travelers are warmly welcomed and encouraged to explore the land. Some things they'll find include...

"...yeah, or that," Cayde concedes, because it's true enough.
no subject
"Well, hey. Leave your journal if you go. I'll put it in the library for you."
no subject
"What I meant about memories though..." he continues, gesturing towards himself. "It's been a thing with Exos. The conversion or something, we lose the memories we had of before. Harder to hang on to 'em. Sometimes they'll come up, no telling what sticks."
no subject
There's a definite smirk in her voice. But it doesn't remain, her arms folding over her chest as he speaks. "Conversion. What do you mean? You weren't always... metal and glowing?"
no subject
Cayde shakes his head. "Nah. Used to be human," he replies. "A looooong, long time ago."
no subject
Meanwhile, that's -- not as far fetched as it would have been before Heleus. Before the kett and their exaltation crap. People being turned into robots is ... still kind of horrifying. But Cayde isn't running around committing genocide. Just hating on Blasto.
"You want to talk about it?"
no subject
It at least doesn't seem like he's trying to skirt the subject. Shrugging again, the Exo gestures for Vetra to join him as he starts to walk. They can walk and chat, right? Standing around seems stranger.
"Was way back before the collapse of the Golden Age. Earth tech was at an all-time high in progression. Weren't any Fallen or Hive or Vex to worry about yet, but hey. You got humans, you still got enough conflict of some kind or another." He chuckles dryly, suspecting that the same goes for any sort of species. Even the Fallen or the Hive had their internal quarrels.
"I did mercenary work, or somethin' like that. Details like that are beyond me. I just remember the mission didn't go as planned. Lots of damage, but that's what happens when you let your guns do the talking."
no subject
Honestly, Vetra isn't all that surprised to hear Cayde was a mercenary. It makes sense to her, with what they've done together so far. He seems like the type. Especially with the whole charging into danger thing.
"Yeah, I know how that goes." Very well, in fact. But then she quiets a bit, glancing at him. "And you woke up...? Like this?"
no subject
Again, Cayde shrugs. "Also made an offer I couldn't refuse, guess you could say. Was lookin' for someone like me, said I'd be forgiven for the whole of things if I took the job."
no subject
He apparently hadn't been kidding about the whole thing. But she's frowning, more and more, as he goes on.
"So... were you?"
no subject
Wait, what part did she think he was kidding about?
"...yeah. Yeah, I was. And I did get a job after that. Some security work among other things."
no subject
And she gestures to all of him.
"This?"
no subject
"Probably all done on the down-low. Can't really imagine many people lining up to become a war machine, but someone must've gotten volunteers or something somewhere, because there are a lot of Exos around." He shakes his head. "But I can't remember all the details. Conversion messes that up, like I said. That and the memory wipes. Then I became a Guardian, and some of it actually comes back."
no subject
She sounds skeptical. And a little mystified. It seems like a long, long way to go for something that could be erased with cash.
"What's a 'guardian' entail? How's that different from... before?"
no subject
The Exo falls silent for a while in the wake of that question, contemplative. "I don't know," he says. "The bits I'm able to tell you are about the most I can remember. Other things...well. Guess I used to write 'em down before too."
He stops, looking off at the sky. "...there's a bit in my old journal I found, I guess I was writing to some kid named Ace. ...my kid. Sounded like it was either be a robot or be dead. Said I'd try to find 'em, even if they might not recognize me anymore."
Shaking his head, Cayde starts to walk again. "Guardian, that's what happened after the Darkness came, after Earth's population nearly got swallowed up, after I died. The Traveler saved what was left of humanity, sent us the Ghosts. They find their Guardians, bring 'em back to life. We're chosen to keep fighting the good fight, and so long as the Ghosts are connected to the Traveler's Light, we'll keep coming back no matter how many times we get taken down."
no subject
Shit, that's heavier than she was expecting. Then again, she's not entirely sure what she was expecting, given he'd told her something went and turned him from a human to a robot. But somehow, hearing there was a kid involved... My kid...
Her mind immediately goes to Sid. Her sister. Who had just been a child in her own right, when Vetra took her away from everything. Would she have done differently, if she'd been in Cayde's position? Doing whatever it took, becoming whoever it took, to make sure her sister was safe...?
Vetra falls into step beside him again. Her hand reaching out to settle on his shoulder.
"And what about Ace? Did you ever ...?"
no subject
"No. I don't think I did. Work kept me away from Earth for a while. Not sure how long I was back on it before the Collapse happened."
He shrugs away, stepping forward a few more steps ahead of her before turning about to face the Turian as he brings his hands up with another shrug. "Can't change anything. Doubt they're still alive after all that. And yet I'm not hurt over it. I...I should be, probably, but that was a lifetime ago, and there's too many holes to fill that it's just all detached."
no subject
Because what else are you supposed to say to that? To information like that. When someone says they lost memories and a kid in one. Even though, it doesn't seem like it bothers Cayde as much as it would bother her.
The beauty of amnesia, probably.
"Ever think you'd go back and look? Just in case?" She holds up her hands, though, before he can answer. "I mean, if it's sensitive crap, you don't have to answer."
"I... just can't imagine leaving family behind."
no subject
"...I wouldn't know where to start. But I don't think I'd find anything. Even if they'd survived the Collapse, they'd still be dead by now." And anything that wasn't near the Traveler's area of protection's long gone into dilapidation if not torn up and raided by the Fallen if there was anything valuable to salvage.
no subject
She stops, after trailing off. And shakes her head. Holding up her hands -- even if it comes from a good place, it's probably not a good idea to keep digging.
"Never mind. You don't have to answer that."
no subject
Cayde gives her a brief smile. "I know you mean well. Sorry I unloaded all that on you."
no subject
There's not much in the way judgment there. She just accepts it. Maybe she can't understand it, but she can accept it.
Vetra shakes her head, clasping him on the shoulder again. "It's fine. Just make it up to me sometime."
no subject
"Okay, okay. Fine."
no subject
Hah.
Nailed it.
