Breakout and Beyond: September Plot Log

Who: Everyone
When: September 9th-23rd
Where: Kauto
What: Escape from Dino Jail and taking the fight to the Savrii
Warnings: Probable violence and mental manipulation. Label your content.

the escape

Over the last few days—or weeks, for many—a number of preparations have been made. Some gathered resources. Others fashioned weapons or small bombs. A few pored over the schematics Mother provided, looking for a weakness in the field generator, while others took her offer of assistance more directly. Whether with information or training, tools or trades or promises, everyone has had a part to play. And on September 9, all of that comes to fruition.

It starts at the gate. Through careful observation of the supply groups, one team of insurgents has correctly identified when the gate will open: and prepared their very own dinosaur-mounted EMP. With the controls damaged and the gate locked open, the Savrii guards are met with a host of individuals armed with shock-sticks, home-made bombs, and one improvised laser—many of whom appear oddly immune to the pacifying effect of the intermediary present.

As terrifying as this proves to their morale, it seems possible the Savrii could turn the battle their way. They have superior weaponry. They have a single chokepoint to defend. They can and will call for backup as soon as the danger becomes clear. Still, there's one factor they couldn't have anticipated. One vulnerability of the dome field, pulled from the schematics by the more technically minded captives who spent time on the endeavor. This place wasn't a punishment, after all. The Savrii didn't want to inflict harm. Merely contain these dangerous people, for their own good. And so, the force field has a safety feature built in.

It decreases power, just slightly, in proportion with the biomass that comes in contact.

While the guards at the gate are busy with their fight, a brilliantly colored array of hazards break free from the forest grounds. Perhaps you're riding one of your new friends. Perhaps you're dangling dino-catnip just in front. It's possible, of course, that your dinosaur is motivated without help—possibly by the array of prey animals running in front of it. Regardless of the motives and the methods, when several hundred tons of dinosaur make contact with that wall?

The force field shatters.

Charge.

A World of Peace

The fact (and methods) of the "newcomers'" escape puts an end to any pleas for peaceful resolution. Within the hour, Thisavrou is placed under a state of emergency: transport locked down, all responders called in, and every combat force their peaceful worlds can gather called to defend against this menace. The Ingress Complex itself is sealed off entirely: a full-strength Artifixx force field raised to deflect (or destroy) incoming ships. Not that the storms outside the Ingress—or the cracks they've begun carving in the sky—look easy to navigate for even the best trained of pilots.

While those looking to fulfill their promise to Mother will need to find a way offworld eventually, events on Kauto are likely to keep Thisavrou’s Most Wanted busy for some time. The Savrii are in self-defense mode, ready to protect their world against those who refuse their gift of peace. Whether looking for a fight or trying to find shelter, travelers are most likely to encounter these groups as their hunters:

  • Security. These Savrii have been taken from their usual work in Ingress Security or similar professions. More like police than soldiers, they are still armed and formidable. Each small squad will almost always be accompanied by a single intermediary, capable of both detecting nearby targets and enforcing the non-violence field on those who did not accept Mother's link. These groups may try to talk characters into surrender and prefer non-lethal force at first. But as the days go by, they are likely to recognize this is futile and be willing to take ruthless measures.

  • Off-World Kill Teams. Those who traversed the wreckage of the true Midway hub, or participated in the extinction of Thiri have met these Savrii before. The ones who take dangerous away missions and purge worlds that have misused Ingress technology, these groups are versatile and ruthless. While less likely to be accompanied by an intermediary, they are more likely to have powers and advanced weaponry of their own. Regardless, they are specialists in their fields and fully willing to kill innocents for the greater good. Their skillsets range from fighters to hackers to assassins and more.

  • Civilians. The majority of civilian Savrii are more likely to hide than to fight, but among their number are non-professional fighters who are more than willing to form amateur groups or go out alone to take down the dangerous invaders. Their mindset may center on protecting their homes or taking revenge for past encounters such as the Shadows. While the weakest of the groups, they're still capable of doing damage. However, not all civilians are hostile or afraid; those who had good relationships with their newer neighbors or who were personally aided may show sympathy. This could come in the form of food, supplies, or temporary shelter, though they won't stand directly against the authorities of Thisavrou.

Regardless of whether fugitives are are caught unaware or go out looking for trouble, one thing is certain: they are likely to do better if they work together. While Mother's link isn't the only method with which to fight the intermediaries, groups without at least one immune person may find themselves put down with ease. At the same time, even those who can resist intermediary manipulation may be overwhelmed by force.

Still, death is rarely the end on Thisavrou, and even now, the technology that allows for resurgence remains in your hosts' possession. Those killed fighting the Savrii may be seen again, and there is always the chance to rescue those who are captured. But would the reunions be happy ones?

Points of Interest

Where to go? What to do? Even without leaving Kauto, there's a literal world of possibilities. Still, the conflict at hand won't go away, and some of your peers have been preparing for it for some time. Between Mother's request, your own needs, and data gleaned from a Trojan implanted in the Savrii's systems, a few objectives might present themselves. And whether you're hunting, hiding, or helping, there are a few places you might want to keep in mind.

  • Home

As soon as characters were unknowingly brought into the Midway Hub simulation, Savrii agents were dispatched to enter homes and search them for any items of potential danger. Mundane possessions will still be there, including pac-discs for those who had them. Settling down for a night at home is likely to get people caught, but now is a great time to pack anything travelers want to keep. However, to find weapons and items taken during the simulation...

  • Reclamation Depot

Established just one month ago, this unremarkable complex is buried in the maze-like streets of Region Five. Rumors describe it as a research site: somewhere to examine hazardous materials and see how they could be turned to the societal good. You might better know it as an impound center. Specifically, where they put your weapons after throwing you into "detainment".

Fortunately, research efforts haven't gotten far. Less fortunately? This is the first place all those reinforcements go. The facility contains a set of laboratories aboveground and a storage complex underneath, as well as an adjoining kennel for containing pets. Your companions won't have been harmed, but you can bet the Savrii will harm you trying to get to them.

  • Network Hub

The data recovered from the Trojan indicates one very important fact: that all of your data has been monitored from day one. Those interested in safeguarding their communications (or disrupting the Savrii's) may wish to make a certain site in Region One a priority visit. A towering skyscraper over a hundred stories in height, the communications tower that controls the TAB network is a masterpiece of engineering. It's also, predictably, guarded. Still, the amount of reinforcements on this site will vary strongly depending on how openly—or how literally—you broadcast an attack.

  • Mediation Centers

Simple buildings designed for a sense of comfort and peace, these structures can be found in all residential centers of Thisavrou. They serve as the workplaces of the intermediaries, the so-called glue that binds Thisavrou together—or, the mind-controlling oligarchs, if your new acquaintance is to be believed.

Under the current crisis? They're a little understaffed. Still, if you're looking for the intermediaries, this is a better place than most to check. Just don't walk inside alone, or your friends might end up looking for you.

  • Sewers

With so many forces acting against them, where can travelers find shelter where they can rest, regroup and plan? A base of sorts may be found in the sewers where a team once sought the contaminant. With access to much of urban Kauto, enough distance from the surface to go undetected by intermediaries, and a few larger spaces to provide some breathing room, the sewers may not be a pleasant sanctuary, but they may be the place most able to give characters more than a moment's rest.

A Dinoriffic Note: While characters may keep their dinosaurs with them after the breakout, now that their prehistoric pals have reached adulthood at an artificially fast rate, they will find that dinosaurs are also designed to wean off dependence on their handler, and over these weeks, character-dinosaur pairings will grow farther apart. Although the dinosaurs will always have a softer spot for those who were around during their adolescent days, alas, these partnerships are not destined to be permanent.

[OOC: Please check out this OOC post for more information on character options and objectives! Additionally, this is the last chance for free exploration of the current setting, as events will push toward the arc climax after this log. If there is anything you OOCly want your character to have or do, please take advantage!]

[In response, Wanda summons a small, harmless wisp of scarlet.]

Something like that.

[It sounds vaguely medieval-looking, or at least like something that wouldn't be out of place in Asgard. Most of the armor she's seen among their companions is definitely of the futuristic variety, so it shouldn't be too hard to pick out the correct set...right?

(Though if she accidentally rescues someone else's armor too, Wanda highly doubts anyone will complain.)]

I'm Wanda.

Yes. And I don't know what they're doing to her in there, or even if they took her here too.

[Give her some credit. She took Zora to the space-vet to be cared for while they went on their enforced 'trip,' but after they broke out of dino jail, she was gone. Fortunately, she was able to read a vet tech who had brought someone else's pet here, so it stands to reason Zora might be here too.

Poor thing must be terrified.]

I could use the company. Can the Intermediaries stop you?

Shouldn't it have, like, ten legs if it's a crab?

[ or, you know, alien physiology. whatever. tetora plays catch-up with nova and calculates how big kai should be by her given estimates. it's practically a mini-kaiju. he holsters his handheld tools and cups his hands around his mouth, hollering with nova. ]

Some home, [he mutters. While he lived out in the trees, he did come around here for work and everything.

But he's used to not really having a home. Anywhere he manages to stay, it doesn't last long. This is just another stop in a long line of wherevers. Can't worry too much about that.

He peers out the window, things quiet for now.]

Well, let's not let them figure it out.

[They haven't followed them in, at least. Small favors.

He climbs out first, normally instead of incorporeal, giving Mantis reason to follow. The coast is clear for now, which he quietly signals to Miller.]

Yeah. Some home. [He repeats, though this time with more grim finality than bitterness. They'd tried harder here, he guessed, to live normal lives than they did at any other point in their miserable, pre-written existence.]

[Thanks Savrii.]

[He takes a moment to catch his breath, leaning forward with his hands on his knees. He watches Mantis while he waits, watching Liquid move out the window first (he's the one that can teleport, it makes sense he'd be able to move more quickly).]

[He lifts up the dog to get him out first, before starting to slip through on his own.]

[Make that two ways of shutting Calla up. Truly, this has been a productive learning experience. The enforcer's helmet is tilted at an angle somewhere between scorn and incredulity, but he won't otherwise react—to the yelling, or to Calla's shock.]

If my pac-disc is here, I need to find it. Then we can take anything we don't want to leave.

[Where they'll eventually put it is another story. They certainly can't stay here anymore, but even if they got the Ingress off lockdown, where do you go when your enemies can just open a portal to follow you? The Savrii have already proven several times over they have no problem wiping out entire 'inconvenient' worlds.]

But I think we should get your real chair first.

[They're lasting longer than he expected, on both sides--he'd prepared for the fight to swing one way or the other very quickly. Chara is fast and resilient, and he himself has enough power to take on several nonmagical combatants at once, but the guards have great enough numbers that they're holding their own.

There's too many, actually, to keep track of, and he finds his concentration slipping as he focuses on dispersing and disabling them as much as he can while also trying to keep an eye out for Chara's safety. He gets sloppy, relies on his magic to passively protect himself while he cleans up after their mess.

He doesn't even realize he's made an error until he's already on his knees, the sound of the Savrii's gunfire registering belatedly in his ears. It doesn't hurt, but he can't--he can't get up--and red is already blossoming on his stomach like ink on wet parchment.

All the magic he'd been maintaining--the fire, the barriers on himself and Chara--suddenly dissipates.]

[The halation of blistering orange-red abruptly ceases, and they whip around just in time to catch a glimpse of him stumbling forward, puppet-string cut, folding over cleanly as a warm patch of scarlet swims out across his abdomen in a glistening inflorescence.]

[It's a cold reminder of what they are. How humans and their fellows are really like. They don't fall to pieces the way monsters do. They can't be consolidated into ashtrays upon their demise. They don't split neatly in two.]

[They shatter.]

[It is sentiment, not the shock of such a blow landing but the frustration at the poor timing of it, that pulls at their attention for that handful of precious, inescapable seconds.]

[They are not in the habit of crying for help, or crying out at all. Big kids don't cry.]

[They manage one step in his direction, a hesitance and uncertainty that leaves them wholly undefended when the end of a stun rod slams into their side (the places where those little round circles burned) and muzzles them into silence with the sustained tetany of an electrical current, lighting their muscles on fire, arching their back, bringing them to the ash-powder floor.]

[He manages, somehow, to pull himself to his feet. He doesn't see Chara fall, or be swarmed, all he knows is their attention is drawn from him for long enough for him to stand, as laborious as it is. He notices dully that his hand is already coated in blood from where he's holding it to the wound.

A few guards approach him, stun batons in hand. He doesn't know what's happening, but he knows he's in no shape to fight them. He knows what their intentions are. He knows where they want to take him.

One of them rears back, to strike him with it, knock him out, take him back to--and something in him snaps. He just thinks,

No.

He doesn't make a choice to run. He doesn't really make any decision at all. He just thinks no, and a blind panic fills him, and then he's somewhere else, several meters away, past where he and Chara had been hiding in the first place. The sounds of the commotion still ring in his ears, but he's not thinking, just moving. It's all instinct. All fear.

He runs.

It's a blur. He doesn't remember where he goes, just that he's going, and they're not following him, and then after a while he registers he's near one of the sewer entrances, but all the energy is flooding out of him and he can't possibly lift it, to go back underground.

But he needs to--he needs to tell someone--

In the end, all he can do is stumble back and collapse against a nearby building as his legs buckle.]

[Fareeha stops and turns towards the voice. She didn't recognize the blue alien, but given he's traipsing about in the sewers gives her a good indication he's with them.]

[It's probably best to head through a different alleyway, or something small and less likely to be tracked. But here, maybe they can take a moment to plan out their route, pick the best way to lose them before they head back to the hideout.

It's quiet. Quiet like it was before they'd been found. Quiet like it shouldn't be quiet, but any sort of quiet seems wrong at this point.

He moves forward, with great suspicion, even though it looks like they might be able to make it to the next small area pretty easily. Hm.

A few moments go by. Then a few more.]

Maybe, [he chances, a whisper, barely audible, something that could easily be chalked up to something else.

Nothing reacts.]

Well, I heard they were stuffing animals in kennel so, might be the place to head to look for the cat.

[She didn't really pay attention when she heard it in passing, since she doesn't have any pets. But she caught a little bit of info about it and figures a little is better than nothing]

Nah, those assholes can't do shit to stop me.

[South got the Mother's gift, a little more eagerly and readily than she probably should've but. There's a whole fight fire with fire thing she had in mind, and just dove in headfirst. She keeps getting headaches and a little dizzy, fuzzy feeling, but it's worth it.]

"Nah, they won't mind you coming with us." She really doubts another trusted armored soldier would be a bad idea.

[It's funny how, when the world as they know it (are they still in a simulation? is any of this real anymore??) is crashing down their ears, Badou chooses this time to go back to their office in merry ol Kauto-- to get their shit. Finally.

How long's it been? Badou isn't sure. He is sure that he probably shouldn't have brought Nill along but y'know, she's the co-manager, accountant, Real Boss, and the very reason the place is still standing.]

[That makes two of them. Two of them in the same "try not to cause trouble" boat. That's the last thing he wants. The intermediaries are a different story, but the civilians are probably just as afraid as they are.]

[The last thing he expects to see however, is a tabby cat running for his feet. He's surprised enough to stop, holding still as the cat rubs and weaves. He can't help it. He really, really can't help reaching down to give the animal a few good rubs behind the ears.]

[He is a cat person, after all. Which is hilarious, all current things considered.]

He's fine, don't worry. [Another few ear scratches for the cat.] But you probably shouldn't let him out here.

[Why?]

[Because they're a child. They're just a kid. He has no idea why they are the way they are... but they're a child. First and above all. A child who could be something great, someday.]

[They all could be. Every kid.]

[The children, the teens, he's taken as his family -- who were all so broken, in so many ways, who ended up being amazing. And himself... who couldn't stop trying even if it wore him down to the bone. Why wouldn't he see the potential in someone else? See their determination for a strength, instead of something that could destroy them.]

[It's why he's still alive, after all. Isn't it? Why else would he have survived?]

[He spreads his hands, the lines under his eyes, the weariness in every motion show. For all his focus, for all his own determination, he's exhausted by it. The question of "why" feeling heavier, more draining than anything else Chara could have asked him right now.]

I don't know any reason why I wouldn't want you to make it.

[He reaches out. Like he'd hold onto them, shield them, if he could.]

[Not saving someone is the hardest thing I've ever lived through.]

[Don't be another Matt. Another Commander Holt or Darin or Keith or Lance. Another name on a list that never seemed to end.]

Come to the house with us, Chara. Please.

[He doesn't realize his eyes go a little wide as Alfor compliments him. Something in his chest twists, even as part of him, some part he hadn't been able to name, that cold, fearful part wondering, constantly, if that voice in his head was right.]

[If his shadow had been right.]

[I can see why the Black Lion chose you.]

[He has to close his eyes for a second. Bracing himself with his hand at Alfor's shoulder, with the return hand on his. And maybe the next step is foolish, maybe he shouldn't be so bold. But suddenly, it feels more natural to step forward, and, quickly, briefly, embrace the king.]

[It's not really an answer at all. Ha ha, why wouldn't he? Good people like him don't exist. There's always something layered beneath. Something he must want. Something he has to have from them, some sick thrill he gets out of playing the savior, the hero.]

[So why, then, are they allowing themself to buy it?]

[Their smile cracks feebly. It's not the confident, polished-edge flare of humorless bite they've so perfected, they've so savored.]

What if Allura doesn't have to lose her father all over again. What if they'll have him at her side. What if Pidge doesn't have to lose another family member. What if he doesn't have to abandon Keith. What if he has another chance to tell Lance he's proud of him. What if Hunk gets to be right and it's going to work out.]

[What if what if what if.]

[They're never, ever, going to know if they don't try.]

[He'll never know.]

What if it doesn't have to be like that. Any of it. Do you... do you really think I want to hurt Allura like that? Do you think I want to see it happen to her?

I was there when she lost him. [Both times. Both when she realized he was gone, and when... when she had to erase his AI. Seeing her like that a third time is the furthest thing from what he wants. Any more than he wants to see her lost to the Galra again.]

But if you think she's going to let you stay behind any more than I am, for any reason, you're an idiot.

[Don't make this about her. Don't. She's stronger than that.]

[There's a moment when Alfor wonders if he's said something wrong. Shiro doesn't see the flicker of concern, of uncertainty that passes across his face as the Black Paladin closes his eyes, trying to figure out something himself.

It's with a blink that the Altean king finds himself being embraced. It's sudden, perhaps it is bold, but it also seems...like some kind of significant gesture of camaraderie, of acceptance. He's the oddity in their collection of Paladins, after all. It's difficult not to be reminded of that. These aren't his fellow Paladins, but they are his daughter's.

Shiro's words are simply fact, and Alfor's smile wavers only slightly, briely. There's nothing to deny in that, but at least Shiro understands. But Alfor's glad to be help over a burden. He nods.

After a moment, he glances at the pac-disc yet in his hand, then at Shiro again.

Give up? Give up?!

[Before he realizes what he's doing, his hand snaps out and seizes Shiro by the top lip of his armor, just above his collarbone.]

How the hell do you think I feel about all of this?! Ah?! Don't you think I'm tired?! Three times, Shiro! Three times I've lost my home! I watched my birth home burn to the ground! I had to leave the life I had with Acteon behind! And now this! What if I go with you, only to find that I get left behind again?! What then, huh?! I can't deal with that! I can't place my hope in a future with you all when there's a very real chance that I might end up all alone again!

[He grits his teeth and forces the lump in his throat back into the pit of his stomach.]

Ever since we met, you've just pulled me along with you! You roped me into this team! You made a place for me! Even when I fought back, you kept pulling me along and now look at us! Now I'm facing a future where you guys might be gone! I've been here for an entire year, Shiro! My world might be gone too! So what the hell do I have?! At least things were certain here! They were concrete! I had a life and a future and I didn't have to hear the words 'prophecy' ever again if I chose not to!

I don't want to give up on you but every fiber of my being is screaming that there's no way my luck can hold out if I go with you! I will lose you all and if that happens...!

[He lowers his head]

If that happens then--

[He's cut short as a hunting party of Savrii rush around the corner, weapons raised. Quickly, Darin shoves Shiro behind cover and jumps behind with him. Maybe an emotional shouting match was not the best idea when they're being hunted.]
