He doesn't begrudge Ava this. There's a lightness he feels radiating from outside of his own existence, one he's never noticed before. Not in regards to her. There is truth in the assertion that he doesn't quite understand when this has been given to him, still forced upon him perhaps but not as a curse. He does not (quite) know what it's like to die and still live, stuck in the middle all at once, but stars, if he couldn't wish even this mild imitation on anyone else.]
Dead. [It sticks as much as anything else in her speech does, gnawing at him until he can't help but acknowledge it aloud. Despite the glare of the sun, his gaze rises.] This whole time, you've been--? [He gives a soft sigh as that gaze softens. Sure, the light hurts, but so does everything else.] Ava, I'm...sorry.
[Only after another long moment of consideration does he finally ask with shaking words:] How do you--did you deal with it? The hunger?
[He knows it's there. It's how they met, over the result of this awful, gnawing need. But she's not always like that, not always guilty, recalcitrant, or scared. She deals, somehow, and living with this in the pit of his stomach makes the idea of doing so almost unfathomable.] How do you stop?
