Between the Perspectives
"but in your future, the you i see is exactly the person you always wanted to be."

Supplies have been loaded onto the ship, and the captains have encouraged all crew members to explore with the added notice that this will be the last planetary stop (hopefully) until the Moira reaches the Midway Hub. While seemingly uneventful on the Moira, the mini colony has been thrumming with adventure and has offered its visitors the opportunity to explore. To those who have indulged, some experienced great changes and others discovered enlightening information about the Ingress and the very ship some have called home for over a year.

Later in the month, the Lamaria hold the closing ceremony of the Desiderium Festival (which was noted on the prior event log) . The burgundy and lime colors of the celebration slowly fade into black and vermillion, and small fires are now in place for visitors to throw their written notes into. Everyone who participates will be blessed by one of the Lamaria (they will visit the ship as well), and the MID will be able to only translate bits and pieces of what this blessing means. "Experienced loss — every story is different — and saying goodbye — not to know — understanding lies in the mingling of holding on and letting go."

TRANSFORMATION CENTRAL
For some, it might be due to a touch or a look. For others, it might not be any of those things at all, and something that just happens. Either way, shortly after the blessing occurs, you will find yourself changing. Your character’s body will slowly transform into the physical likeness of another being on the Mini Colony. The effects of this change may last as short as a day or as long as a week, but each come with their own stipulations—advantages and disadvantages. This is limited to one as the blessing itself only allows for “a little understanding”. Linked below are some of the possible transformations that your character can go through. Players can choose either one of the mod-supplied suggestions or choose the form of another already living on the Moira.

THE FEAR MACHINE
Paranoia writes the checks, we're dangling here like a marionette. Here we go again, the world is coming to an end. Engage the fear machine and collect the dividends.

While the festival is beautiful, and some have found enlightenment and understanding here, there are those on the mini colony who don't enjoy the festivities. In a secluded room on the fifth floor in one of the buildings in the Science District, there is one such person who finds the religious festival to be a nuisance—one who should be stopped. Thinking that disrupting the blessings and celebration will somehow "get back" at the Lamaria for impeding their work (some of those who have transformed got into the building a few years ago and destroyed this person's property). Pettiness thrives, and they create something they dub The Fear Machine. Yet, while the science is sound, the technology itself is not.

In the middle of the mini colony, the machine is set off, and bolts of transparent energy erupt and spark out around it, stretching as far as the docked ships. Since the technology wasn't created properly to sustain the energy, it doesn't spread out evenly like they had hoped. Some are hit. Some are not. Those who are will develop a sudden and overwhelming phobia that will last well into the beginning of November. The machine might be turned off and left behind, but the obsessive fear has only just begun.

[The raven catches his attention before anything else, and even the subtle shift of wings enough to make him bristle and stiffen. It's a distraction from the makeshift mirror he doesn't want to catch glimpse of, but a welcome one is a definition that certainly does not apply. It immediately conjures thoughts of his fa--of Odin, and there's an urge, hidden carefully under outstretched, flexing fingers, to reach behind and snap the damn thing's neck.

The urge subsides though he stays just as rankled at the interrupting commentary.]

What would you know of it?

[Near-snarled, but he makes no move to turn and address this head-on. What could this stranger possibly know about appearance. Under any other circumstance, it's an observation he might agree with, but after too damned long dealing with having to keep his heritage worn under his sleeve and all-too openly, Loki is not feeling terribly generous on that front of similarity.]

[Chainsaw, being more sensitive to animosity, croaks out a keraaaahhh of warning. Ronan, on the other hand, snickers in amusement. Very unkind of him, when he fully recognizes a god in distress.]

What all magicians know.

[That eyes can be deceived. As he said, appearance is meaningless.]

You don't have to let it get to you.

[As close to reassurance as anyone is likely to get from Ronan, and only because he suspects this guy can kill him swiftly. He can't gauge what exactly it is that's got Loki so rankled, but his words clearly triggered something.]

[It is a sentiment he knows well, and that is precisely why it sets his teeth on edge. These appaearances shouldn't matter. A mirror can be as easily fooled as anything else (and others fooled with them). Rationally, he knows this. But from the moment he'd stepped foot onto his first colony of this strange journey, the experience has been nothing but reminders of how much those appearances can also matter. And worse yet, how much he loathes being so open about what (and perhaps who) he truly is.

His shoulders stiffen and his jaw pops as he sets it in distaste. He finally turns, red eyes boring into the man who has come up behind him. The mirror may be out of his vision now, but he's still looking into one, reflected there plainly in this stranger's reaction. In anyone's reaction, truly, when he'd have smothered this form if he'd ever been able to separate himself from it.]

Is that what you fancy yourself? A peddler of cheap tricks?

[He knows that word could mean something quite different than the laughable way in which Midgardians often use it, but he is not feeling particularly charitable.]

What I fancy myself...

[It sounds different when Ronan says it, a sort of singsong Virginian drawl that feels like a mockery whether he means it or not, a new-money plantation lord mimicking an old-world aristocrat out of sheer amusement.]

I guess it all depends on what you consider a "cheap trick".

[He's not the kind of magician Loki's thinking of, that's for sure. Actually, if Loki really focuses, he might suss out that Ronan is made of magic. As is the bird on his shoulder. Weaker clairvoyants have noticed.]

But I'm not the one in crisis here, man. Focus on the real issues. It's okay to admit you need help.

Or it might depend on what you consider magic.

[Because illusions are serious business alright? Illusions, Dad. He isn't thrilled by the tone, not that he's been much kinder through this whole exchange. Though, to be fair, having been stuck in this form for days now is leaving his already short nerves on edge. He's too preoccupied with his lack of control over his own magics, and yet here he is arguing the minutiae of them anyway.]

I'm fine. [It's all but snarled and definitely nowhere approaching "fine".] Give me something useful or nothing at all, your choice. But spare us both the agony of cheap advice.

I've had enough of makeshift fathers for several lifetimes.

[Ronan laughs a real laugh at being compared to a fatherly figure (though the label isn't exactly inaccurate). But besides amusement, another feeling wakes up inside him. He feels quite suddenly like he's street racing, and he's stopped at a light, and Loki's pulled up beside him with a challenge. The last time he felt this was with Kavinsky. (Which turned out bad, but Ronan is terrible at listening to the part of himself that says hoe don't do it.)

Chainsaw is that voice. She squawks in protest before Ronan even speaks again, and he ignores her.]

I'm not a mind-reader. You have to tell me what you need before I can give it to you.
villainry: (dicks out for captain america)

What I-- [But what does he need? Certainly not pretentious reassurances, not that damned bird that reminds him of home in all the wrong ways, not a witness to his horrid insecurity he can't mask when he can't mask anything else either. Help, is what he needs.

Of course, what he wants is to be left alone. He can handle the solitude. Silence doesn't mock by its nature of simply existing. But solitude, it seems, is going to fix nothing, and thus he's left with a desire to run and hide away from the world, and a need to fix this so he doesn't have to.]

Norns be damned for this. What I need is this [a casual motion to his face, red eyes blazing angrily behind splayed fingers as they move] made right.

[It's more vulnerable than he wants. It's too obvious. And it speaks far more blatantly of how uncomfortable the face of his true birthright makes him. But there is no avoiding that sick feeling settling in his gut, not with his Jotun heritage on casual display for anyone who happens to turn and look.]

This is much worse than just appearance.

[Or so he's convinced.]

[personal profile] nightmarist 2016-10-31 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
You wanna change what you are?

[Ronan supposes he might want the same if he was this damn ugly. But beyond appearances? Well, that gets more complicated. He tilts his head thoughtfully while he reaches up to smooth Chainsaw's feathers.]

Would you favor someone who could solve that problem for you?

[He's half-joking, privately. After a year of questing for Glendower, to wake the sleeping king for a magical favor, he can't help but wonder if other creatures might behave similarly.]
villainry: (but that's none of my business)

[personal profile] villainry 2016-11-01 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
Not so simple as tha--

[He's about to argue that he knows damn well that it's nigh impossible to change one's origins, and should be much easier to change the here and now, but there's a matter of that question, and it stops him immediately. A single brow raises in curiosity.

Would you favor...

This is no ordinary idiotic mortal. He knows...something of what he's talking about, that much is clear. And insomuch, there's also something Loki has disregarded in this entire exchange. He hasn't asked for "a favor", nothing singular or transient or boring, but favor in the context of the old ways, a sort of homage he hasn't heard in...ages. Suddenly, the boy is right, and the appearance of this whole matter doesn't seem of concern at all. But he has asked, and so Loki has to know:]

It's my favor you want, is it? What do you think that grants you?

[If there was every any surefire way to catch Loki's attention, appealing to his greater sense of superiority is certainly one of them.]
nightmarist: (adamant ☘)

[personal profile] nightmarist 2016-11-01 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
[Ah! Ronan's eyes are suddenly alight with vitality. Simultaneously, it seems, they're recognizing each other, Loki confirming his suspicion with that response. Ronan's heart leaps with a thrill that's usually reserved for dreaming, when magic in all its unpredictability goes exactly the way it's supposed to.]

I imagine most people would say "power". Personally, I wouldn't mind knowledge and occasional company. If I'm being honest, though, this would be my first time being favored. You guys are in short supply where I come from. I don't really know what to expect.
