"It is an exploration for truth; the reveal can be more terrifying than the unknown."

He's not complaining about all the speculation, either, because he finds it amusing. Hey, this time he gets to be the better-liked brother, right?
"I suppose the closest thing'd be rugby, or maybe American football. Rather violent, too. I've had teammates die on me already, which explains why they needed people so bad." He's very matter-of-fact about this, like it's perfectly normal.
All of his teammates had died on Shadow Moses, after all. Other than Ocelot, but he didn't count.
"There's a big tournament coming up, and I think we've got this won for sure."

"Are you kidding me?" he spits out, his voice raising a little higher than it should and attracting the attention of some of the people around them. Snake grunts in frustration and moves a little closer to Liquid so that he can lower his voice.
"That sounds more like a gladiatorial death match than some kind of sport. Why would anyone join something like that of their own free will if they knew they might die?" There are plenty of reasons. Pride and overconfidence, for one thing, and Snake's sure that's what drove Liquid's choice. But it's possible that some of his teammates, some of those people who died, didn't even have a choice in the matter.
No matter what way you look at it, this sounds shady and Snake can't believe that Liquid's acting like the whole thing is normal. Or maybe it's completely believable.

He crosses his arms when Snake moves closer, scoffing lightly. "Hah. Not in the least. It's not like people are dying for the hell of it. It's just a bit... dangerous. Some people like danger." Liquid seems to, apparently. "Death's a possibility, not a requirement." Although... the violence is kind of encouraged, but it's best not to tell Snake that. "Besides, winning's pretty damn prestigious, as you can see." Plenty of perks. "You just have to be good. If you're not good? Well, I suppose you get eliminated then, don't you?"
His fans certainly think he's good.
He raises a hand in a sort of half-shrug, half-vague wave. "It's not like it's that big of a deal. Maybe they just do things differently around here. No one on the team seems to have a problem with it. We'll win the tournament, and then everyone can take a break for a bit."

Granted, it's possible that things are done differently around here and that's part of the culture, but Snake can't shake the thought that there's more to it. Survival instinct is supposed to be ingrained in any species, and Snake doesn't see why that would differ out in space.
"I'd call that dying for the hell of it, Liquid," Snake intones, speaking slowly as if that will somehow cause the meaning to be transferred more clearly. He doesn't know why he even bothers. "Have you bothered to ask any of your teammates why they would participate in something so dangerous? Maybe they're being manipulated into it. Maybe they owe someone money. There's a lot that could be going on and you're acting like everything's hunky-dory?"
Some of the fans have sensed that something is going on and have started to move away, while others are even more interested in eavesdropping.

That's how it's always seemed to him.
He adopts a more defensive pose and a glare to go with it, ready to strike back if Snake feels the need to go after him for something as stupid as another place's sports culture.
"Bloody hell, Snake. Yeah, that's some really riveting locker room conversation, isn't it? 'Oh, right, Xoxxorx, I've been meaning to ask, you're not being extorted into this, right?' Maybe I'm not some sort of expert in sports-related camaraderie, but nobody seems to have a problem with this except you. We go out, do our thing, win, and everyone understands the potential consequences."
Noticing some getting closer, Liquid tries to shoo some of the fans away, which does about as good as expected. Hoo boy, this sure has been something.
no subject
He isn't going to actually throw a punch over this. No, if anything he'll just start his own investigation. He certainly doesn't have any interest in working alongside Liquid on... well, pretty much anything.
Since the fans don't seem to have any interest in leaving them alone, Snake figures that he's better off beating a quick path away from here. Harassing the team's new star player is only going to get a target painted onto his back.
"Fine. In that case, I'll just leave you to cater to your adoring fans," Snake says, the sarcasm thick in his voice. He doesn't understand how Liquid can stand around signing autographs with the knowledge that some of his teammates have lost their lives in the course of the game he's promoting.
It might seem silly for Snake to be so wound up about this, given his line of work, but dying in the midst of a battle is different from dying due to a game that ultimately has no real bearing on anything.
With a deep sigh, he makes to leave.
no subject
Of course, he won't pretend he cares enough to try and research every single one of his teammates. They've all worked out something of an acquaintanceship over the games he's participated in, but they're nowhere near 'trust' levels, and it's rare that anyone ever really will be. He knows their abilities, how he can get along with their personalities, and that's all he really needs for the moment.
He just rolls his eyes at Snake's tone, and grabs the nearest person's piece of sports memorabilia just so he can sign the autograph and make a point or something. Look, he's finally getting the attention he deserves or something like that. He's not going to let his brother ruin something else for him.
"Don't forget to catch the tournament," Liquid calls after him once he leaves, in a voice that implies he doesn't really care if he catches it or not. Jeez, Snake's always trying to ruin his moment, isn't he?
