Re: —
[Nate stares at him for a moment, and then touches his junction device.]
What if you could? What if we could get someone to upgrade this [he lifts the device slightly] for time travel as well as world?
I have no idea why there was a random emdash in the subject
Don't ask me that when it's a what-if and not something you even know if it ever could be possible. You don't—I can't open that up again.
[He rests a hand on his chest, like he can show the kid where Sam's death ripped a hole in his heart. It took so long for that wound to heal as much as it did. And now imagining what if, what the repercussions could be...it starts to tear it open again.]
no subject
We're talking to ourselves, with different memories, on a planet in another universe. I don't know what's impossible any more.
[He drops his hand from his device.] But okay. I won't tell you until I have something either way.
no subject
Okay. Good.
[He lets out a long breath.]
I guess...that's all.
[He doesn't really know where to go from here.]

[It's flat, the news stunning him too much for him to be too angry about it. Nate looks at him for a moment, then shakes his head.]
I'm... gonna go. [Not that he particularly has somewhere to be, he just doesn't want to be here, with the bearer of bad news.]
I'll see you around. [But he's not burning this bridge.]
no subject
[Nate's not bothered by the sudden need for distance. He knows why the kid is leaving, because it's exactly what he would do.
He just wishes he could have avoided breaking his own heart.]
