[ Yeah. Self-employment. Exactly the thing Jesse was bitterly, defiantly thinking about while he was lying in that hospital bed, face all busted up from Hank beating him almost to within an inch of his life. Fuck Mr. White, he'd been thinking. Fuck him. Fuck Mr. White and his asshole, arrogant, self-centred, life-destroying greed. Jesse was gonna flip Mr. White the bird and fuck off into the sunset with his own business, like he'd had going before Mr. White ever showed up back in his life. Except this time, he was a lot smarter about how to run things, how to cook, how to beat Mr. White at his own game.

And then, he wound up here. And as much as there's a part of him that still wants to hate Mr. White, Jesse feels so lost and scared without him. ]

Well. Ain't like any of that matters now, right? Nothin' like winding up in space, a million, billion miles from Earth or whatever to make you realise how pointless it all is, huh?

[ Dutch smiles and points a finger at Jesse. ]

Hey, now. Some of us have some hope of actually getting back home. Only I’m hoping that by the time I get back to Brooklyn all of the vampires will be dead. It’s a sunshine and lollipops view of the future, I know, but if we don’t have our dreams what else do we have?

[ She goes back to fiddling with and looking at her jewelry and sighs. ]

If you could be doing anything in the world right now, anywhere in the universe, what would you be doing?

[ Her eyes find his again and she tries to read him, figure out what he’s thinking. Dutch suspects that there’s more to Jesse than meets the eye and is somewhat determined to figure him out. ]

[ Jesse glances across to Dutch and can't help letting out a small conceding laugh under his breath at her wagging her finger at him. Yeah, he has to admit: the worries he has about home are nothing compared to that. Makes him seem stupid in comparison. Most the problems he's got back at home are all his fault, anyway.

At her question, Jesse directs a small crooked smile at her, flicking ash off his cigarette at his side. ]
