meet head-on
"Here I am at the end of the road and at the top of the heap.."

So far, things have been sort of normal for those aboard the Moira. Some of the crew have begun researching the Ingress, which has produced some interesting things as a result. There has also been the incident with Navigator Mana being separated from the ship while others have been deal with something worse as well as the on-going problem with Ploiatos. However, all of this isn't the problem.

The Ingress begins to work as it should after combined efforts from the crew and is honed in on the Midway Hub’s specific signature, but traveling there isn’t exactly easy. Since the Ingress hasn’t been working properly for so long, as the energy of it surrounds the ship, it enters the Moira into what the creators had called a “timeslip”. Looking outside the ship, this can be described as a multitude of different things. Inside the ship is a completely different story. Effects from Ploiatos have not disappeared, and some of them have even amplified due to the timeslip. Pieces of the ship are beginning to rot away and entire sections of the floor might just disappear from underfoot. Also, one other thing: ALL rooms have been unlocked, including a space that holds all of the missing shoes “taken” by the Ingress.
LET’S DO THE TIMEWARP (AGAIN)
The timeslip is not kind to those riding it through to its destination. Looking out any window will reveal worlds growing, thriving and dying in the blink of an eye. One may even glimpse faces of those they know in various states, perhaps even fragments of events that have not happened or maybe never will. Time is weird like that. But there are other things to be wary of in the time slip. Insomnia strikes without warning, and sanity will begin to trickle away as well. Some may even fall prey to body alterations as they travel through more damaged areas of the ship. Bodies may be altered by the energy of the slip, aging rapidly or changing in strange and uncomfortable ways that can’t be properly explained. These changes will happen suddenly and fade away without warning, but there is no getting used to it. People are not meant to be caught unprotected within a timeslip like this, and with the ship falling apart, there is nothing to keep them insulated from the side effects of the vortex.

They say if you stare too long into the abyss that the abyss begins to stare back, but in this case, even averting your eyes may not keep you safe from the dangers on all sides.
HE ATE MY HEART
Inside the timeslip, one thing is clear: anything and everything can happen. First Mate Egan will tell anyone who asks that this isn’t typical, which prompts Ira to tell the crew to exercise caution until they reach the Midway Hub. What should take seconds feels like weeks inside the slip, and packing for departure is encouraged. Outside the ship, time flits by, passing disorientingly fast, and for the first few days, it is the only notable malfunction.

Three days in, the crew encounter the first slip monsters. They come within hours of each other in two waves, and when they’ve boarded the Moira, they won’t go until killed or the ship has reached the Hub. The pool will have a new guest, the hallways are over run with small creatures, and the vents are swarming with massive foreign things. The slip is a dangerous place, and all crew are allowed to use any means necessary to stay safe. (All slip monsters can be used by any players; the monsters can attack each other, crew, themselves, the ship. It’s a literal monster throw-down.)
ISN'T IT IRONIC? DON'T YOU THINK?
As the Moira reaches the Midway Hub, the ship shudders out of the timeslip‐what should be a graceful stop is anything but. The ship shakes, the vibrations unending and splitting metal. The Ingress machine thrums, a heartbeat felt in every inch of the Moira as the energy crests out of the boundaries the creators had fashioned for it. Blue swirls of light curl up and out, breaking open the ship from the inside out. It begins to plummet, and evacuation measures are, once again, initiated.

Crew are instructed to get to transporters and crafts, leaving nothing and no one behind. The ship is breaking, falling fast and rough through the atmosphere surrounding the Hub. Evacuation pods are primed, anyone in cryo will be taken to the Cargo Bay for transport (unless alternate arrangements were already made), and the hatch in the Bay is opened for crew to escape through. The coordinates for meeting are sent to all crew, not far from where the Moira should touch down, and all medical staff are asked to be ready and waiting for when the ship lands.
GROUND CONTROL TO MAJOR TOM
Those who have already evacuated and have landed on the foggy, dark expanse of terrain that the coordinates have guided them to will see nothing around them except for the bright light of the Moira as it breaches the atmosphere and crashes into the rocky surface of the Midway Hub. One of the Captains, Thán, chose to stay on the ship until the last moment to make sure all crew were evacuated and was injured in the process. His reading on the IC Directory blips in and out, signaling that he’s somewhere in the ship’s rubble in need of immediate assistance. The MIDs stop functioning after the initial crash and other than reading vital signs, won’t come back on for a few hours (the network won’t work correctly in that time frame, sending videos and messages that it shouldn’t or not posting at all). The other Captains will ask for someone to take a head count and to report anyone who might be missing while all others will be directed to carefully seek out crew in the rubble and to gather any cargo that they can. Take inventory, set up a medical tent, check transporters and crafts, help crew, and stay together until everyone is accounted for.

isn't it ironic

[It feels like it's been hours since the fighting began. Venom faced off with several monsters, one of whom he vaguely recognized from his world. He knew what kind of chaos they caused from a distance, so he neutralized them when he could to prevent them from exploding.

But it's rather tough with a giant bat strapped to him. Yes, he felt this was the best way to keep Bart safe, sort of cradled to him like a child with enough breathing room. As he's making his way to the pods, he sees Jim with others. And with them is yet another monster.

Venom steps in to strike, taking it down so evacuation can remain uninterrupted.]

That was closer than I wanted. Are you all right, sir?

[He's right back in Guild leader mode.]

[ The ship is, quite literally, falling apart around them. Jim had been helping a fellow crewman, whose arm was slung over one of his shoulders as he took the brunt of their weight, in order to get them through the next set of semi-barricaded doors. Come on, I've got you. We've got to get you to the pods. He's only just relinquished his hold on them, passing them through to waiting hands of the other people in the group, when he hears the exclamation that another monster is closing in on their position.

Jim is about to sling his phase-rifle off one shoulder when he sees Venom step in for the strike. He doesn't hesitate to help, trusting that Venom can handle himself, and moves to where another person is hiding away from the fighting. They don't want to move at first, but he manages to get them up, and through the door. He tells them to keep going down that corridor until they reach pods to egress, or the cargo bay.

Only then does he bring his rifle around at the ready. His bangs are down towards his eyes, hair matted from sweat and blood of both is own and monsters. He got a claw to the scalp earlier, and its darkening his usual blond hair, and staining his collar. He's not worried because those sorts of injuries always bleed a lot. His uniform is ripped at the right shoulder, there's a cut high on one cheek, and his knuckles are red and busted in places from hand to hand. ]

We're back to sir? I thought I told you to call me Jim.

[ You're not going to pull that Guild leader mode on him, Venom. Even if Jim has fallen back on his training as a captain, and getting everyone else off the ship first. ]

And I'm fine. How are you two holding up?

We're surviving.

[Bart's clinging to Venom in his sling, letting out a screech now and then. The former assassin scritches his head in an attempt to comfort him. It also serves as a distraction from Jim's injuries. He despises bloodshed, and it pains him to see a good friend hurt like that.]

And my apologies, Jim.

[He's clearly not fully relaxed to give up total Guild leader mode, but he'll attempt it.]

If you require cover, I can stay here while you board.

The ship is starting to go, I'm not sure how much she can take before she breaks apart completely.

[ Jim isn't a fan of it, save when he was younger, but that was only bar room brawls. He doesn't have the stomach for blood, and he's seen far too much death in his life up to this point. Enough that even having to take a life, when it becomes necessary, still haunts him and informs his steps. ]

I'll forgive you this once.

[ Said teasingly, even as he lowers his weapon a little when no more monsters appear, and offers a crooked grin, though the light doesn't quite reach his eyes. ]

Thanks, but I can't go yet. There's still people on board, but you two should think about going. If you want---stay as long as you can, and I'll send who I find your way.

[Venom readies his cue again, striking a sneaky monster and knocking it cold. As the ship shakes violently, Venom tries to stand his ground.]

Please don't say that. I don't like the idea of this ship falling out of-

[What did Jim mean by that? If they don't go soon, they'll go down with the ship, too! He approaches Jim slowly.]

Are you sure that's wise, Jim?

[He's willing to help, but...]

Nice one.

[ Jim says it with a grin, raising his phaser-type rifle to fire another blast when a creature suddenly rounds the far corner. It hits the monster center mass, and it crumbles with a screech. He doesn't fair so well with balance once the ship shudders and shakes, and has to reach out to steady himself before he falls. Inertial dampeners are likely failing, and soon egress might not be possible for anyone not already in the bay or leaving via pods.

He looks back at Venom, but can't muster that same grin as before. I cannot allow you to do this! His First Officer isn't here to argue against this course of action. His best friend is hopefully off the ship and somewhere safe. He's not sure, there wasn't time to find out for certain. ]

No, but it's what I have to do.

You don't have to do it...

[It's the first thing that exits Venom's mouth, though it fades with every word. Why would Jim want to go down with the ship? Does he have some sort of connection to it? Either way, he doubts he's going to convince the other man to finish fighting and escape while he can.

Venom's leader mode's still going strong as he is about ready to command Jim to abandon ship as necessary, but a small voice within wants to do something more surprising. To give Jim a parting gift before leaving.]

Jim.

Except that I do, Venom.

[ He offers a small, almost sad smile when he says it. He doesn't intend to die. He doesn't plan on it. He'll fight against it if it comes, but he also has a duty. He may not be sworn into it here as he was in his own reality when he took the Captain's Oath---but it counts here all the same.

He isn't leaving until everyone is off of this ship.

Even if he were to command it, Jim would rebel against the order, it isn't in him to back down. He just wasn't made for it. If Venom knew more, maybe, about what Jim was born into, he might understand it better, but there isn't time for that now.

There isn't time for a lot of things now. ]

Yeah?
poolhall_killer: (lonely)

[personal profile] poolhall_killer 2016-11-27 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
[Why? Why does Jim feel like he has to go down? Why does it make Venom so upset? He did something similar back home when he was fully willing to sacrifice himself so the Guild could be reborn. So it makes little sense why he's feeling this way.

If he does go down with the Moira, they won't see each other again. His emotions are jumbled and worsened by the adrenaline. What should he do? His logic tells him to go, but...

Venom's regretted a lot in his life, and he did his best not to. When he became Lord Zato's right hand, they practically vanished. Much has changed, and if he doesn't act, he'll fall right back into that pit of regret.

He reaches out to Jim, cupping his face before he takes those lips.]

[personal profile] caelus 2016-12-07 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
[ Because everything in him screams that this is the right course of action. Against logic, against training. This feels right. Abandoning the ship before it is clear doesn't, and so he won't. He'll stay until there is no other choice.

He was born into an eventuality where it was better to die saving lives, and he can't divorce himself from that. It's all he knows, and deep down he always knew it was a possibility. He expects Venom to give into logic and leave, because everything in their friendship has indicated as much thus far, but he doesn't expect him to close the distance between them. He doesn't expect Venom to take his face in his hands and kiss him. He doesn't expect to have wanted it like he does, but he returns it in kind.

Jim allows himself to surge forward, heedless of the ship destroying itself and the monsters helping it along, and meets the assassin partway, cradling the other man's face in his hand, and kissing him with fervor.

When he pulls back, it is with no small amount of regret. ]

Y---you need to go.

[For that brief moment, Venom was truly happy. He'd felt a rush of bliss wash over him, though Jim's words quickly snapped him back to reality. As much as Venom wants to drag him along, he knows he can't.

He should say something, but the ship's current state prevents him from any parting words. His normally blank face is expressive enough, with the light welling of tears in his eyes. Despite that, he returns to his stoic state and heads towards the pods, focusing on surviving the ship's inevitable destruction.]

[ Jim can't say that he wasn't happy as well when their moment happened. However short and fleeting though it was. He wonders, for a moment, if this is what his dad felt like when he realized what it was that he had to do all those years ago.

Seeing the look on his face, he feels his throat close up, keeping him from saying anything else. He reaches out again, taking Venom's hand in a brief, reassuring squeeze, and pulls back. He wants to tell him that he'll see him again. He wants to tell him anything, but he can't.

So he brings his weapon back up to bear, and turns down the passageway away from the assassin. ]
