It's a contradiction that's easily explained by the nature of Kaworu's being, but it is also true that Kaworu had never experienced the shape of a rectangle, or felt its area. It had no meaning to him. Time, on the hand hand, and its shape and movement, were a very intimate experience form him--he had a personal relationship to.

And though the human ability to visualise an abstract is something Kaworu really lacks access to, he can understand what Sans has described instinctively, even if not cognitively.

The cognitive part is somewhat required to put things into words, though.

"So it is continuous... but not inaccessible. The human mind allows them to navigate in space... can the heart be used to navigate in time? Or perhaps it is time that guides the heart."

He doesn't know how much of this can be understood by science, or if it is science at all--but isn't 'science' the ability of the human mind to understand the world around it? These definitions are really too vague, he thinks. But it's all he has to work with.

"...there's a difference?"

This... this is new to him. The idea that there might be more than one kind of science--not just different names given to different parts of the same thing (chemistry, for example), but a entirely different kind of science--

Or does he mean the science of metaphysical law, as opposed to physical law? Could it be that monsters have begun to discover those secrets, despite the intended barrier?

Frisk said that they can sense things from an individual's soul...

Magic.

Last time Frisk had used the word, they'd gotten in a bit of an argument about it.

Kaworu blinks once, then his mouth skews sideways.

"Magic." It's not disbelieving, it's just--an echo.

Then he narrows his eyes. Pensively. Sceptically?

"Do you mean libido?"

No. No, Sans really, really does not mean that. Not the way anyone with half a clue would hear that phrase, anyway.

But Kaworu?

What Kaworu means by libido is one half the metaphysical energy balance of the world. What Lilim called libido, the energy of Eros, the Life Drive in all living things. Its counterpoint, destrudo, is the energy of Thanatos.

Together, the effects of libido and destrudo comprise the power of the soul--a power manifested most notably in the form of the AT Field.

But Sans doesn't know what an AT Field is.

And what he probably hears right now is something very, very different.

"Frisk called it magic too." There's a faint smile. The kind that means Kaworu thinks he has this conversation figured out.

Kaworu watches, all bright eyes and brighter smile, as Sans constructs a human bone from the appearance of nothing, destroys it, and then recreates it.

Yes--that is exactly what Kaworu means. Life is created with the energy of libido, erased with Destrudo. All the components of physical space and form, the metaphysical energy of the physical world.

The distinction between physical and metaphysical is really a series of human categories, beyond Kaworu's real ability to grasp. In that sense, ice and fire are less libido and more entropy and thermal transfer. Kaworu lacks the words to express that concept, but if asked, he would say that creating bones was the only part of Sans' list that was pure libido.

Needless to say, he has no idea what Sans is trying to say about being confused.

"It doesn't really matter what it's called. But the fact that you can use it like that is very special." He was somewhat prepared for this, based on what Frisk had told him about monsters' sensitivity to others' souls. He hadn't entirely expected a human bone, but the implication of Sans' demonstration is far from lost on him.

His smile widens.

Perhaps Frisk was right. Monsters were very unique.

"Maybe you really do know."

He seems... excited?

"Time."

But those too, to be honest.

It's all connected, inevitably. Everything is connected.

Kaworu's eyes are bright--Sans has his full attention in a way that precious few have actually achieved.

Shinji Ikari was one.

Frisk is the other.

As with all things, Sans. As with all things.

Kaworu might be a bit limited in what he can say (or ask, or even put to use), but he knows he doesn't want to ask questions if you don't know any more than he does. That won't do him any good.

"Time is a precious resource to me. But despite my experiences, I have a poor understanding of it. If it's linear and circular, that means it's infinite... but requires the completion of its arc to fulfill its cycle?"
