Ed laughs a little, though it's nervous or shy in a way. He's used to being praised, but here it feels a little strange. "I have a lot to learn still. I'm not sure what everything in this lab does, but I'm getting there. I had a teacher back home, though."
His face looks grim, almost a little terrified, at the mention of his teacher. "We don't have anything like this back home, but she taught me alchemy. It's not the same but you can use the same methods to learn just about anything, I guess. Probably with less bruising, though. She could really get mad."
no subject
"Wasn't a jerk, was she?" A testing statement, meant with a certain healthy caution. "You don't have to answer that."
no subject
He laughs a little, rubbing the back of his head uneasily. For all that teacher is terrifying, she was the closest he had to a real parent growing up, once his mother died. He owes her a great deal.
"That's all. So I'm trying to use what she taught me to kind of help me out here. It's working a little bit, anyway."
no subject
"And she taught you... what was it, alchemy?" Sans ducks into the next room, rolling the term around in his head. The word was bandied around in old human scientific texts, but it was never viewed with seriousness in his own culture. A parody of magic, more than any real science. Still, Sans couldn't help being curious. "How'd that work for ya?"
no subject
Ed shrugs a little and leans against one of the tables in the lab. They're a little more hidden from the med bay proper, but not quite out of the medical facilities just yet.
"I'm not too sure where I'd be without alchemy, it's kind of a way of life, you know? Wanna see?" Ed grins, always happy to show off a little, but the fact that someone seems genuinely interested in it, too, helps.

"Dazzle me, kid."
no subject
He puts some distance between him and Sans before he claps his hands together, the sound ringing a little before he touches the ground, and from the metal floor paneling? Well, the metal morphs into a statue of Sans, tiny skulls and banners and stars all around him. He lets the statue settle a minute before clapping his hands again and repeating the gesture, making the statue take a few steps toward Sans before it stops again, Ed setting it in a pose.
"Pretty cool, huh?"
no subject
But when the little him grew out of the floor, Sans couldn't quite hold back his laughter. He claps himself, slow and measured, obviously impressed.
"Damn, kid."
no subject
Ed shrugs and stands, looking at the little thing he created. "It can be pretty useful. Is your magic like that?"
no subject
He does manage to send off a few unimpressive sparks, though.
"My brother's the real powerhouse, if I'm being honest. I'm more about practical application, y'see."
no subject
"Yeah, I guess it's pretty different where I'm from, but I'd love to see more, when you can. Maybe we should get our brothers and all talk about this stuff. I know Al would love to learn about it just like me. I want to see this magic, too. How does it work?"
Sorry, Sans, Ed can't contain his nerd.
no subject
"N' not gonna lie, I kinda wanna know how you do it, too. You say it's not magic? 'Cuz our magic is..."
Sans stops, thoughtful.
"Well, it's part of us. Our life force, kinda. Without it, I'd look about the same as you'd look with all the water sucked from your body."
no subject
Ed's been curious, anyway, if teaching alchemy is possible in this place. There's a lot to learn, of course, and he would want to be selective about who he shares it with. He trusts Sans, though, for the most part, and by proxy his brother as well.
"It's kind of complicated. It all depends on your understanding of the world around you, really. The chemistry of the world, you see, so it's science, just a different way of looking at it, that's all." He smiles, but blinks when Sans explains. "Whoa, so you need your magic to survive. Don't overwork yourself, then."
no subject
Sans points down to the spot Ed just recently affected. "That's a little more exciting than chart read outs, though."
His concern, though, gets little more than a shrug. "N' don't worry about it. I'm about at my limit already. Kinda... overdid it recently."
