“Do people always get that old here?” Will lives be longer in the future? Will people be more than a quick match strike, burning out quick and leaving nothing but ash behind? It would be nice to see a world where being out in the sand didn’t mean counting weeks but could lead to counting years.

"It's still kind of dangerous here and too many people die too young, but living to thirty's not that weird here. And some people, who are epically awesome and really good at survival can live to be, like, almost fifty or more."

She shakes her head, knocking her shoulder against him in a small gesture of comradery. He's playing a joke on her, obviously. Just like the boys used to do with her. She'd never met anyone that old and was at the age that she had trouble believing anything she had no experience with. "Quit with tryin' to be funny and show me around, okay? Wanna pretend bein' good a survival makes ya live, then ya gotta show me."

He ruffles her hair with his hand and tries to think of someplace good to show a child. Diamond City, maybe? The mayor is far more authoritarian than Deacon likes, and an anti-ghoul, anti-synth racist bastard, but it's still a good example of people coming together to build a ramshackle bit of civilization out of the chaos and destruction. Although the girl is even more authority-averse than he is, so...maybe not Diamond City. He'll show her the Freedom Trail. Even if he can't reveal HQ itself, he can still show her the that.

She tenses at the touch to her hair; she wasn't used to being touched by anyone outside of her crew. But she doesn't duck away, a sign that she likes him well enough not to push him away. She shoots him a little smile, a half apology for how her muscles have locked.
"Where we headed anyway?"
no subject
He flicks a quick, sheepish smile back, a silent apology in return. He knows how much an unexpected touch can freak out someone who's used to always being on the alert for an attack. He should be more careful next time.
"It's called the Freedom Trail."

She likes it. It sounds like the things Cherri would say on the nightly broadcast, wise and making the boys nod along like they'd figured out something profound. The kind of philosophy wild raised teenagers believed in.
"Freedom, huh? You guys really wanna sell how well off ya'll are around here."

His eyes scan their surroundings as he speaks. It's quiet so far, but he knows there are super mutant camps along the trail. With luck, though, he and the girl will be able to sneak past them.

She watches him look around, takes the time to gather her thoughts. "Did the old world really have all that much freedom?" She asks after several moments, biting her lip. Her admission comes quite. "No one ever talks about before the wars much. Think it makes 'em kind of sad or maybe everyone's startin' to forget."
no subject
That's the impression Deacon's got from the books he's read, at least. Hard to come by, half of them history, half of them propaganda, they've left him with an idealized view of the past.
no subject
Her view of history was terrible warped by having no real sense of it. She'd only gathered a little from listening to her crew talk, though they knew little of the world from before the bombs and from D, who was always so wrapped up in the wars that he rarely talked about the good. The praise the wasteland got for it's freedom made her think it was the only place to ever really have it.
