The cinnamon bunnies are given more careful inspection. She grabs one on her way behind the counter, propping her elbow up on the counter. Her free hand spins the note around, index and middle finger holding it in place.
It was foolish to ever expect anything else. She takes a bite out of the cinnamon bunny. It tastes like nothing.]
... Must've just missed her. Where'd she run off to?
[The question is asked without thinking as she drums her fingers on the paper, her palm and wrist covering the words written on it.]
no subject
[Her motions finally call too much attention to the paper for him to ignore, and he points at it.]
Is that from her? Perhaps she said where she's going!
no subject
She wanted to protect her family.]
It wasn't really meant for us.
[Kyoko folds the paper once, twice. That much isn't a lie, and an honest guy like this should be able to see the flaw in rifling through messages meant for others.]
I don't really get it, but it looks like she was worried about her family.
[That much isn't a lie either. She doesn't understand. Not even a little. Kyoko can still see all the tell tale signs of life, though. She can imagine the shopkeeper standing where she is with a smile. She can imagine children begging their mother for wares and offering suggestions. Ridiculous, normal, boring days, all brought to a halt.
She hates it. Kyoko offers a wry smile and continues,]
Anyway, we should go. I'm sure she wouldn't want us making a mess of her shop.
no subject
She was?
[Again: He hardly sounds surprised.]
Well, in any case, you're definitely right! We should probably find someplace with more... occupating going on in it! These abandoned places are just sad to look at. So much stuff, and nobody here to buy or sell it.
no subject
Not yet.]
Hmm... Yeah, it's a pretty big let down, y'know.
[Kyoko steps around the counter and walks back out into the biting cold without looking back. He'll follow.]
There anywhere 'round here that a person can get a bite to eat? I'm starving, y'know.
[Somehow, that question seems a bit dangerous, but...]
no subject
Well, if you like grease and unhealthy snacks, Grillby's is always open! Or I could make you a nice steaming plate of spaghetti at home. The choice is yours!
[But if the neon sign is anything to go by, they're already getting close to Grillby's.]
no subject
It's probably not fair, but the idea of a skeleton cooking is weird enough to override even her discomfort. They're made of magic, so she supposes they could have some kind of sense off taste, but...]
Grillby's, huh.... Let's try there first. It'll probably be faster than trying to make something from scratch.
no subject
[Grillby's is unlocked, but much like the rest of the town, it's deserted. A card game is laid out on a table in the back, and a few unfinished glasses and bottles sit here and there in booths and on the bar itself. It still smells like burgers and fries, made recently. The fire exit in the back won't do them much good -- neither of them are made of fire, so it won't budge.
Papyrus finally seems a little surprised, not to mention concerned.]
Wowie... Grillby too? I didn't think anyone could-- I mean... perhaps he's visiting family in Hotland!
no subject
She tests the door, makes a token effort at finding stranglers, before she meets Papyrus' gaze.]
... Papyrus.
[They've spoken before--enough for her to acknowledge him if they passed by on the ship--without ever once using his name. It's only now that she chooses to.]
no subject
[Does he sound nervous? He hopes he doesn't sound nervous.]
no subject
[A beat.]
But first, there's something that I want you to promise me.
no subject
[Papyrus, you don't even know what it is.]
no subject
I'm gonna hold you to that, y'know.
[The smile that his answer brought on fades quickly, her expression growing serious.]
I want you to be completely honest with me, about everything, even the things that are painful and hard to talk about. Can you do that? If you cana...
[Kyoko takes a breath, closes her eyes, and exhales. Her words are slow, each one chosen with care. They come in quiet, secretive tones despite the empty space--nobody else should ever hear them. It's ridiculous. If she were an outsider, she would laugh at herself for addressing somebody like him so seriously.
That's fine. It's better, even, if she can leave herself the only one of them that has to feel the crushing weight and pressure of every reality they step into. It's better, because he can still have hope and be a hero of justice, not a sullied mockery like her.]
Whatever problems you wind up having, I'll find a way to fix them. Including this one.
[It's wrong. This world shouldn't be like this, but there's no one who will--or perhaps simply no one who can--step up to repair the damage. That's the way it's always been. Kyoko doesn't want to be the one to fix it, but the thought of leaving him to this already tainted world makes her stomach churn.]
no subject
[There's nothing but hope and optimism in his voice -- if she says she can fix things, then he believes she absolutely can!
Even if he has no idea how she could do that, with so many people scattered to the winds in one way or another.]
What do you wish for me to be honest about? You'll find me very forthcoming on a variety of topics!
no subject
Good.
[She scans the empty bar again.]
Let's get back to your house before we start talking about that. I'm still hungry, y'know. And...
[Her mouth opens to continue, but she holds the words back. She shakes her head. She hates everything about the look of this place.]
... Never mind. Let's go. For now, you can just tell me more about this place. Name's Snowdin, right?
no subject
[He's more than happy to leave Grillby's behind. It was always something of a hub for the town, always hosting sentries on break or bored townies or, of course, his brother.
Seeing it standing empty was more of a gut punch than he expected.]
That's right! Snowdin town! Though the whole area around here is called Snowdin too. If you go one way, you'll find the ancient ruins, and in the opposite direction you'll see the rest of the Underground!
[His own house is easily spotted -- large, twinkling with fairy lights, wreath on the door, and two mailboxes out front. One's empty and neat, the other's overflowing with junk mail.]
Behold! It's scenic my house! Come in, I'll show you around...
[It's roomy, two floors, comfortably furnished. There's a rock on a plate in the entryway, covered in sprinkles. Apparently the skeletons led a comfortable, oddball sort of life.]
