far from nowhere
"the trees rustle in the evening when we stand uneasy before our own thoughts."

With the events of Del Pascia behind the Moira, things are only now beginning to settle—and not very well. Through the combined efforts of some of the crew, D-E-L and her permanent residents were incinerated into the dust of space. While it’s not the most peaceful end, it is one, and not many are going to be thinking back on how nice Del Pascia’s facilities were for quite some time. Repairing what they could of the ship’s interior and putting as much distance between the Moira and the prison as possible, those aboard are informed by Navigation that they are approaching another planet. This means, of course, the potential for better supplies, as some things are beginning to dwindle, and the Captains elect to dock so long as the crew follows protocol.
WELCOME TO AMISSIS-RE

Amissis-Re is an unregistered planet with no documented histories or signs of life. The Moira’s Navigation crew have scanned the planet for any usable resources and have discovered a faint signal emitting from beneath the surface of Amissi-Re. Using the transporters and any other crafts located in the Cargo Bay, the crew are able to travel to the source of the signal. Upon arriving in its exact location, they’ll find a small series of lakes that lead to a tower-like structure that appears to be in use. Crew must cross a poorly assembled bridge system that sways and dips when weight is applied to it in order to gain access to the entrance. Once there, a woman comes out to greet them and explains, excitedly, that she is so very happy that they have come to Amissis-Re.

Everyone can go home.

Their host insists that she has done the impossible and has somewhat fixed the Ingress that’s been built on Amissis-Re a long time ago, and what’s more, she can send crew home for short bursts of time. Upon following this woman inside, crew will find that the planet is not, in fact, barren at all. Diving deep into the underbelly of Amissis-Re, it’s like an eternal factory of machines, and while vast, for whatever reason, it also seems incredibly welcoming...

LEAP OF FAITH ( 05.01 and on )
The barren planet of Amissis-Re is devoid of vegetation and organic life except for a lone woman, and the planet itself is an intricate honeycomb of machines that go for miles below the surface. Yet, that seems insignificant and unimportant in comparison to the news that the crew has just received. After Thán has looked at the Ingress, he tells the crew that he cannot say for certain that it is properly functioning, but Emiri native, Ben Link, will volunteer to test it out.

An elevator takes crew down to a glass platform that overlooks an inverted Ingress portal. In order to return home, the Moirans will have to take a leap of faith and jump in. Ben, in order to show his commitment to the crew and willingness to help get them home, takes that jump with Captain Thán seconds behind him. Jumping feels like dropping through wind; lights swirl, it’s warm, and a soft buzzing encompasses you as you fall. You don’t feel the landing. One moment you’re falling, and the next, you’re in a new world.

A few hours pass before a similar elevator rises from below and to the left of the Ingress, stopping beside the platform. Ben and Thán step out unharmed.

It works, and everyone can temporarily go home. Will you jump?

COMBINE THE EXTREMES ( 05.01 and on )
The woman that greeted the crew and led them to the platform will allow anyone that wants to go home the opportunity to go. There’s only one catch: it’s not permanent. She’s worked for years to fix the Ingress so that she can return to her own home but hasn’t been able to make the trip an everlasting one. Everyone always comes back. Always. They go for a few hours, at first, but that amount of time increases with each visit.

The one guideline, she says, is that you can’t go alone. Each trip requires a partner, or it becomes too much for the mind to bear. These rules are simple: the world takes shape depending on who jumps first, but if crew go hand-in-hand and leap at the same time, the worlds combine. This new world will be populated with people that existed in both and may appear to be a jarring combination of both worlds. It may seem unusual, but if the woman is asked, she’ll explain that the combined world does exist as there are more universes than can be imagined. The Ingress tries to take the person to their own home, their original home, but when jumping together, it finds the closest possible match and deposits them there instead.

From that point on, you can travel the world together or split up, but remember, this world is a living, functioning world. It doesn’t matter if it’s the home of one crew member or a combination. You meet other people. You can get hurt. You influence and are influenced by others.

Be cautious, and enjoy your visit “home”.

LINGER ON ( 05.05 and on )
The more times the Amissis-Re Ingress is visited, the more it seems that your trips last longer and the experience becomes even more vivid. More real and harder to distinguish from the current reality that you know. It’s difficult to explain why, but you get the feeling that maybe if you went without the aid of the host, that perhaps you’d be able to stay. Forever. It takes some subterfuge, but in time, you see your chance: she’s nowhere in sight, and you take it.

The world you are in now is completely your own, whether another crew member accompanied you or not. The people you know are there, everything around you is exactly as you remember. A few hours pass, and you don’t feel that familiar tug, that invisible hook at the base of your spine that signals that your visit is over. Even more time goes by, and you’re still in that world, your home. When the first day has passed, you begin to question if you’ll ever go back, or if life on the Moira was all a dream. The person with you won’t be able to convince you otherwise, and they’ll start to feel less real, a stranger that you used to know.

There’s only one way to go back to the Moira. Someone from the other side has to come in and retrieve you both. Once in, contact with a third will jump-start a link through the Ingress, and it will pull all crew back to the platform.

"O'Malley was an AI," Tex says. "A rage-based AI. He was partnered with me during the Project, and he made me more likely to hurt or kill people in the line of duty. I decided he needed to be taken out."

The part about switching sides sounds damning when it's retold and Tex knows this, but she doesn't really intend to gloss over it. "When I found out his plan to defeat the aliens I decided I was the best one to be there when he carried through with things. I knew his agenda inside and out."

"It was still pretty fucking messed up," Sister says. "She was going to let O'Malley infect the kid!"

"And I was going to be there to make sure he didn't take things too far," Tex says.

This kind of explained things while also raising even more questions, like 'why the hell would anyone make a rage based AI' or 'why would you use that AI to infect a kid'.

"Pleasant," he says instead.

"As lovely as it is discovering your latent speciesm." Nihlus is giving Tex a heckuva side-eying here. "I was under the impression that we were here to accomplish something?"

They only had a couple of hours before being pulled back through, after all.

And he can always ask for more sordid details along the way. This... 'Sister' certainly seemed happy to give out information and Texas herself didn't seem to care too much about hiding the information.

Tex had never been much of one for sharing about her past among the denizens of the Moira, but this situation was leaving her without much choice. Unless she wanted to knock Sister out, but she knew Sister was just sharing facts.

"It was in the name of the war," Tex said. "And I don't know what we're going to find here that's going to be useful. Last time I knew their storage was full of mayonnaise."

"We still have most of it, if you want it!" Sister piped up rather cheerfully.

"No," Tex says dismissively. "Maybe we can find out if Sarge still had any robot kits over at Red base. Or we can take your Warthog..." She eyes Sister. Would it be possible to take the Warthog back through the portal? It was supposed to be only things they could carry.

Very, very carefully, Nihlus takes a moment to try and clamp down on his tongue. Spirits knows he's done awful things for the sake of maintaining peace. He has no higher moral ground to speak of, not even where children were concerned, and pissing Texas off while in unfamiliar territory wasn't the best of ideas.

"Here I was thinking you were against brainwashing or something."

His tone is light and conversational and sharp as a shard of glass.

Without waiting for an answer, he turns to Sister and asks, "Is it just you and the pile of mayonnaise here then? Or are there others?"

Like this 'Sarge', perhaps?

These people had some pretty weird nicknames even for human military.

Tex doesn't answer. The barb is noted and its accuracy is uncomfortable. She would have to explain the circumstances of the war to Nihlus later. There was a lot more to it than two factions who were opposed to each other. She shifts, but that's all.

"It's just me," Sister says in response to Nihlus's question. "Everyone else transferred out ages ago."

"This is a waste of our time," Tex says. "I should have known that we'd get sent here. We're within a few hours' drive of a better-equipped facility—a power plant. Sister, can we take your Warthog?"

"Only if you take me with you," Sister says. "I souped up that baby myself, I don't want you to drive off with it."
beautifulspaceraptor: (oh yeah?)

Sorry for the lateness!

"Why are you still stationed here, then?" Nihlus quizzes, a mandible slanting in confusion. If this was just a training camp, then there'd be no need for personnel to still man it outside of the occasional maintenance maybe.

"As long as the trip is under two hours, we'll get there before the Ingress rubber bands us back." Although an hour or so to spare might be cutting it a bit close for supply scouting and he's not too sure.

As for Sister coming along, he doesn't offer any objections. Maybe he'll even rope her into duetting ridiculous space pop music and annoy the heck out of Tex.

"I don't know," Sister says in reply to Nihlus's question. "It was me and the robot at Red base for a long time, but he's gone now. Sometimes I wonder if they forgot about me."

This situation is so frustrating to Tex. There's no use in being here—there's nothing of use here in Blood Gulch, and they're too far from anywhere else for them to make it in time. Probably, anyway. "I don't know how long it'll take to get there," Tex says, half-growling. "We'll be cutting it close. But it's better than sitting here waiting."

"Well, hell, that sounds pretty shitty." Nihlus' tones were laced with quiet sympathy as they head out towards the Warthog. "What do you do around here all day? And how do you get supplies?"

Because looking around, he doesn't see a lot of activities to get up to in a borderline abandoned training camp and he's really hoping she didn't just subsist on mayonnaise this whole time. Knowing what he does of that weird white goop, he can't imagine it being a particularly pleasant long-term source of food.

His sympathetic wondering is disrupted by Tex's annoyed growl. Nihlus casts her a vaguely amused look.

"We'll enjoy the scenery if nothing else," the Spectre offers somewhat blithely. Being dropped in the middle of settings they couldn't predict or plan for wasn't exactly fertile soil for success. No use getting agitated over it.

"Mainly party," Sister says. "They still drop shit off, as long as I requisition it. Even the glow sticks." She climbs into the driver's seat of the Warthog and waits for the other two to pile in.

Tex can't help but be soothed by Nihlus's words, even if the situation is frustrating. She doesn't speak, just climbs into the turret seat of the Warthog in the back.

"That's... something."

Glow sticks and partying, huh? Nihlus climbs into the passenger seat after the two of them, folding his long legs up to compensate for the lack of proper leg-room that human-oriented vehicles tended to come with.

He quietly wonders how Sister hasn't gone off the deep end completely. He knows he never dealt particularly well with missions that put him in a lot of isolation but this... was this typical here?

The Turian casts Texas a somewhat baffled glance over his shoulder.

Tex doesn't respond to the glance, simply getting herself in position for the ride behind the controls of the turret. Sister begins chattering as she drives, telling the story of everything that had happened to her in Blood Gulch, from the time of her arrival in a crashed ship onward. The woman is obviously starved for attention. She's not only telling the story, she's flirting with Nihlus every few sentences. She doesn't really seem interested in his reactions though, because she keeps talking as soon as she's done saying something like that.
