...not quite, my friend. I'm not an alchemist- they're mostly stuck within the practicalities of the science of it all. Its quite unnatural really.
[Except he turns to study the circle he was painting, expression turning quizzical.] Why would this make you think of alchemy... they're entirely different arts.

Saw a guy doing something kind of like this. Making something happen all weird like. Unless you just happen to have abilities. Which would be way cooler.
[He's a little hopeful on that. The last few times he's asked about something weird or unnatural he'd been told it was alchemy or magic. It'd be nice to hear someone just talk about being born with it for once.]

[He takes off the glasses again now that his examination of the symbols was done, wiping them on a cloth he produced from the same pocket.] The general however is a little more confusing- witches are both the battery, the conduit, the on switch, the controls, the engine...

So the crystal has magic on it's own? Or is it because you're using it? Same with the herbs. Could other people make something happen or just someone like you?
[He chuckles a little at the analogies.] The whole damn ship, huh? If you're all those things, why need the words and symbols in the first place?
no subject
[He chuckles.] Magic can be too raw... it needs to be given directions. I may be steering the ship, of course, but I'm only really going forwards without something to give the magic substance. Its why we favour things like this, rituals, it gives structure so that the magic can't change on a whim. Unfocused magic is no game, after all.

You talk about it like it's something alive. With a mind of it's own.
no subject
[He nods.] I see you're following, then. Magic is like a living element... it does have a mind of its own in a fashion, wild magic in particular can be quite unique.
no subject
And that part sounds dangerous. How do you make something do what you want when it has its own will? Fancy words enough to make a living thing listen? Is it a power thing? You have to have so much power or practice before it does what you want?
no subject
It is dangerous, yes... for example if you're born a witch, then you must learn how to be a functioning witch. That's part of the job for us older ones, teaching. Its the same as everything, no? You can have the tools but you need the power and knowledge to use them.
no subject
You don't think people can't figure it out on their own? I mean, teaching can help, yeah. No one was teaching us how to function back home.
no subject
[He shakes his head though.] Alone? True growth is rarely achieved- some would go mad with the power, given no direction it could make their lives hell. Training and education is the best thing for any witch. Especially those who inherit greater power than others.
