[And he'd thought asking about his dad as a child had been hard.]
Not like it's impossible. I might not be a witch, but I managed my abilities on my own. But, you know, I guess it works out better for your people to try training them. Must be nice to have a community like that.
no subject
[Eric nods.] I gathered there was something about you, I'd thought that perhaps I just hadn't been paying due attention but you did appear seemingly out of nowhere, no? [And he's grinning.] You should see what happens when they neglect their training, such small minds capable of such great feats. And the community? Its everything. Witches only survived as long as we have thanks to our ability to bond together.
no subject
[He might be projecting here, honestly.]
But you know, opposite side is kind of cool. Adopting and all that.
[He gives a smile and a nod.]
Not out of nowhere. I'm just fast. [It's clear he thinks there's no "just" to it. He's proud of his power for what it is.] Well, what does happen? Can't just hint at it, man.
no subject
[He shrugs though, he hadn't been born out of pure magic so he wouldn't quite know. The instances still proved to be quite rare.]
Just fast? I'd say its a bit more than simply fast but okay. [Because it made it sound like Peter was just saying he was good at sports, really.] Just last week a younger cousin of mine froze the entire floor of the kitchen on account of the fact she wanted ice cream... So many small disasters can occur thanks to the whim of an untrained mind laced with magic.
no subject
Okay. How about faster than anyone I've ever seen? Probably faster than anyone on this ship? [And here he hadn't been about to brag.] Last week like, here? You have family here?
[If so, Peter really doesn't feel that surprised. He'd gotten Wanda, after all.]
Disasters can occur to mutants when they don't know what they're doing either. I mean, I'm assuming. Can't tell you how many times I ran into walls or ran into someone when I was younger. I get it. Kind of cooler though, having all those different powers at the ready. And probably a lot scarier for the adults then just seeing your kid trip into the side of the house.
no subject
[He shakes his head sadly.] I should probably have made that much clear- occasionally I still see my home, through visions. [He gestures to the signet ring on his left hand.] This keeps me linked to my family. It isn't always exact, just glimpses of things that could be happening now, or in the future, or even in the past. I'm not sure how time works while I'm here.
[Eric does seem quite interested now though.] And are all mutants fast like you?
no subject
So. Psychic. [That's territory he understands. Sort of.] Lucky though. You can still see the important people. If you could communicate, you'd have the best set up here.
Nope. Well, don't think so. I haven't met all that many. But no one I've seen yet is like me. It seems like they all get different abilities.
no subject
[Eric shrugs.] Its quite the problem, yes... back home communication wouldn't have been difficult, not at all... but here, somehow, I can't make the connection.
[Eric seems quite interested by this, at least.] Ah, so the mutation isn't one specific thing? It opens the door for powers but doesn't make all of them the same?
no subject
Think that the Ingress is stopping it? Or maybe the people here are doing something to you?
Something like that. [He looks sheepish.] I don't really get it, honestly. It's not like people talk about it openly or go showing off research. I just now with the few others I've met, no one's like me. And they're nothing like each other. Some are way more useful and more powerful. Some look like they suck.
no subject
I'm not sure. It could be that I'm in an entirely different plane of existence from my own.
[He actually seems super interested in the whole mutant thing now that they'd moved past the part where it might look like an insult.] That is very interesting indeed. That each mutant is decidedly different. [Except his expression changes slightly, more inquisitive.] And its not being spoken of openly? Is it some form of secret?
no subject
Like we're in another universe. Makes sense. We seem to have a lot of those.
Mmm. Yeah. You don't really want to tell it to a world that will hate you for it. People are scared of us. To them, we're freaks. Humanity doesn't have the best track record of dealing with things maturely when scared. So people keep it quiet, wait until there's more of us, I guess. Enough to start changing things.
no subject
[He nods then, realizing exactly what kind of situation Peter must have come from.] Of course, I understand. It wasn't always that witches such as myself could be so open, either. The time always comes, eventually, where the oppressed garner the ability to change their circumstances.
no subject
I'd imagine. I mean, I don't know anything about magic being around but we'be all heard of Salem back home. [Though, in his context, he thought they were likely mutants and people just got the wrong idea of their powers.] I think we'd have to have a lot more than we do now to change anything at home. Maybe the next generation will get it figured out.
no subject
[Eric can't help it, he lets out a groan at the mention of Salem.] Oh, Salem... gods. [A heavy sigh.] The biggest disaster and most horrific publicity stunt the world has ever seen. [And of course it happened in the states. He treads away from that matter though, thinking instead of Peter's situation.] Perhaps... or the generation after them. After all it took us over a thousand years to figure things out.
no subject
[Peter shrugs.] I think that depends on your respective. I know some older people who'd say the same about the second world war. And some upset mothers who'll say the same about Vietnam. Generational thing, I think.
[Every new disaster was always the worst, too fresh in the mind for people to look past.] Yeah. I don't think I can wait a thousand years. All that makes me think is to never have kids. They don't need to go through all that waiting too.
no subject
[And he's shrugging.] Believe me, Salem wasn't on those levels for real witches, it had nothing to see with regards to the five century hunt itself. [Because a lot of what happened in Salem had nothing to do with real witches. It had to do with rumours and human nature.]
[He smiles but its a sad one.] Of course, that's the hardest part... waiting.
no subject
So no actual witches got caught? All just people they thought were witches?
[He plucks at his jeans, shaking his head.] Not something I'm very good at.
no subject
[And he's shaking his head slightly.] Not exactly, no. Hedge witches, maybe. By the time Salem came along my kind had already been hiding for hundreds of years- if a witch doesn't want to be caught, they don't tend to be.
[He can't help but chuckle ever so slightly now though.] Ah, of course. For a young man as quick as you waiting must seem absolutely endless.
no subject
Hedge witch? Kind of makes it worse though, right? Just people killed for no real reason.
You have no idea. [The idea of waiting was something like a personal hell for him.]
no subject
[He shakes his head.] They weren't killed for no reason not really, they were killed thanks to human nature. Human nature coupled with centuries old biases, judgements, hatred and anger.
[He has to smile at that though.] I believe I might have some degree of one.
no subject
[He quiets a moment.] But all humans aren't like that. You don't think that, right? Because I don't think that's human nature. Just how people are.
I have a hard time believing anyone without these kind of speed powers know what it's like. No offense dude, but I really don't think you do. [So much of it is a teenage thing. A firm belief that no one could possible understand his own unique circumstance. And some comes from repeated attempts to explain to his sisters, his mother and their inability to really grasp it.]
no subject
[Eric bites his lip for just a second before continuing.] I suppose I'm not the best to ask, I've witnessed... many things wrought by humanity. Things that change a man's perception of the world.
[And he chuckles then, because that was such an aptly teenage response.] Everyone has their own version of these things. For example from the moment I hit puberty I was forced to witness visions of the full history of my bloodline through dreams... you might say I spent what felt like thousands of years sleeping.
no subject
So we'll just not go there. Because I don't really feel like getting into an argument with you over it.
Yeah? I know some kids who would like to spend that long sleeping. But I guess that sounds like it could suck.
no subject
It would probably be better then, yes. [Because Eric didn't exactly need to broadcast his feelings on humanity, either. Not in a ship as varied as this one.]
Could suck would be quite an apt response to it, if a little on the subtle side.
no subject
Noted. [He wouldn't be able to listen without getting angry. His mother, sisters, they were human. He couldn't hate humanity when humanity had made him what he was.]
I'm not the one who's good with words, dude. If you want a good speaker, call my sister in. I'll just say it sucks.
