On July 9, a demon begins to make its way through the Ingress, summoned through by a shitty teenager.
July 9-12
Harrying
Harrying
It's innocuous in the beginning. A movement in the corner of your eye, a shadow through a curtain-- merely a tree. But then the shadow figures begin to emerge into full being. Black-eyed wraiths that look like enemies, friends with whom you've had past conflict, or even you yourself. At first, it's merely harrying, minor harassment. Threatening gestures, broken gestures, jump scares.
Pursue them, and they disappear-- you might even catch a glimpse of how. They melt down into black slime, racing away across floors, through sewer grates, up walls, impossible to follow. By now, the worst of the climate freeze is over, but residual ice does pose a needles extra obstacle.

July 12-15
The Violence Escalates
The Violence Escalates
In the days that follow, the situation only gets worse.
Sporadic harassment turns into outright attacks. The targeting is unmistakable. The shadow beings who can speak tell cruel tales of animosity, spite, even hatred. They are as deadly with their hands or strange powers as their doppelgangers are, and worse, they're functionally indestructible. Rip off one's head and it merely reforms out of sticky black ink. Limbs regenerate just as easily. The being might dispell for a few hours, but no doubt— it'll be back, if not to hurt you then someone you know.
The Savrii begin to notice. It's hard not to. While there is hardly an epidemic of panic, the disruptions are hard to miss-- broken windows, screams, random violence. Soon, the authorities begin to open safehouse facilities at which characters can seek shelter.

July 15-18
The Golem
The Golem
On July 17, something horrific begins to happen— several shadow beings merge to form a massive golem in Kauto R1. It is a grotesque, horrifying spectacle, of limbs and eyes and pulsating flesh. It reaches almost sixty feet in height. Combined together, this shadow creature is considerably less intelligent than the individual beings were. However, it is also immensely strong and regenerates just like the smaller ones did.
Within the mall, hundreds of daytime shoppers are trapped within. Luckily, they have food and climate control. Perhaps you're one of them-- or perhaps you're trying to get in to provide medical care.
In the meantime, the attacks from the individual shadow beings don't stop. Despite the intelligence exhibited by some, all of them seem mindlessly bent on tormenting their targets until they are killed.

The Sacrifice
The Sacrifice
On the 9th day, a network post goes up (link pending, will be OOCly forward-dated to July 10th latest) revealing how to remove the invincibility of the attackers.
And by the 21st, the remaining beings utterly vanish without explanation— unless you happen to bear witness to the events that take place at St. Monmouth.

[It's not like old times. It can't ever be like old times -- not after the revelations and the literal explosions. But this is close.]
[He'll take it.]
It is not as simple as hitting it out of the airlock, I fear... [Of course he's going to bring that up. There's a rueful sort of tone to it. A sort of laugh that doesn't quite come.] Hitting it. Others have tried firearms, explosives.
What damage is done -- it repairs.
[Even the weak amusement fades. It's a losing fight. He can already tell. Yet he will stand tall, so long as there is something to fight for. Someone -- like the one at his side again.]
no subject
Then we have to damage it faster than it can repair.
[That seems to be the logical conclusion in a situation like this, even though Jack isn't certain his rifle can do the amount of damage they need in the amount of time they need it. The easiest way to do this would be to blow it up and hope it doesn't regenerate from smithereens, but he doesn't have that kind of equipment on hand.]
How's your shield integrity?
[Reinhardt's been fighting this thing much longer, which means Jack might not be able to fire from behind the comfort of the barrier for much longer.]
no subject
[He nods, once, sharply, rather than take his eye off any impending shadows lurking. They're smaller, but no less dangerous for it. For his part, he doesn't even question if the man standing with him is one himself -- if it were, he'd be dead by now.]
Fifty percent.
[Not as good as it could be, but there's wiggle room.] You do not happen to have a bomb on you, eh?
no subject
Not on me. We might have to improvise.
[Which they've done before, of course. Jack is scanning their surroundings, looking for anything he might be able to ignite or otherwise use as an impromptu explosive. In the meantime, he has his rockets.]
What would Torbjörn do, right?
no subject
[And then he laughs. The big, booming sort of laugh he probably used in the face of other, equally overwhelming odds.]
Blame omnics and carry on? [It's not the answer, though, but he had to say it. Laugh in the face of danger.]
Have we anything to make a turret of?
no subject
Something around here has to be flammable.
[Explosive, ideally, but Jack will settle for setting the thing on fire. At the very least, it should distract it long enough for the two of them to make an escape.]
congrats on the skin old man
[Like a gas station, but for space. If anything around here uses some form of combustible fuel, then it's a time bomb waiting for a trigger. It might wreck some nearby buildings, but if it damages the creature...]
[He nods to Jack.]
Do you have a map? Your TAB?
[Because he's holding the shield.]
id like to thank the academy
He pulls up his TAB and a map display, sparing only a glance--because the creature certainly isn't going to wait for them to figure things out. Things aren't so conveniently labeled, but he recognizes the shape of structures, and figures that moving is much better than staying still, in this situation.]
This way.
[He's sure he can find something to blow up.]
A+ dad content
[He shifts the angle of his shield. So it aims in the direction Jack indicated. If they survive this, both of them, then he'll make it up to the Savrii somehow.]
[... he figures, if one of them makes it out of this alive, he'll be sure it's his friend. He can do that much to make amends.]
Onwards! To victory!
Re: A+ dad content
He leads the way for now, making sure to stay under the cover of the shield, only darting out to harass the monster with pulse fire--they'll need to make sure it's following them.
Which it does, because it doesn't have anything better to do. Jack doubles down, firing and backing up as he does so.]
Move! Around that corner.
no subject
[And likewise, he's careful to keep Jack under the shield. Pushing himself a little. He's been out fighting this thing since it appeared. The armor boosts a lot of things, but its power isn't infinite.]
Going! Where next!
[After making it around the corner, where's the next step.]
no subject
[Despite his attempts to divorce himself from the man he used to be, he certainly sounds like a commander, barking orders into the chaos even though it’s only the two of them. Reinhardt falls in step without missing a beat as they make a break for it down a long stretch of city street, the monster cutting corners right through the side of a building. He’d almost wince, if not for the fact that they’re probably about to cause as much if not more property damage.
If this works, anyway, but Jack doesn’t see why firing a trio of helix rockets into a fuel tank wouldn’t work.]
There.
[It looks like a gas station, just down the end of the block, and Jack is pretty sure he can work with it.]
Just gotta lure it close enough.
[And make sure they’re out of the blast radius in the process.]
