thisavrou monthly info ( the tmi )

All information is current as of day 27 (May 7). There are 100 days in a cycle, and the current cycle started on April 11.

Storm Update: On day 29 (May 9), the typical structure of the storm surrounding Thisavrou seems to shift visually with the clouds and intermittent flashes of lightning forming new patterns. At the same time, Ingress technicians detect a strange energy signature emanating from the facility at low levels, almost like a leak. There is no obvious effect at first, but by the end of the day, that energy begins to flow across Kauto and Chioni with curious results.

Residents of the planet will soon discover that they have acquired strange superhuman (or superbeing, for those who aren't human) powers. Those who are particularly social or who have been around for a long time may realize that these powers resemble abilities wielded by those who have come through the Ingress in the past, or even those who have never set foot on Thisavrou but are from the same world as someone who has.

Effects of the odd energy vary – people may discover they can read minds, cast magical spells, or have become invulnerable. These powers may also replace ones they already have. The level of control is just as unpredictable—someone may be a natural with their new abilities, or be in great need of a tutor!

By day 33 (May 13 OOC), the effect has faded, and the technicians soon decide to restrict the days that the Ingress is active going forward.

[[For more information, check out this OOC post!]]

While Kauto has always been known for its temperate climate, the slow changes have accelerated as the onslaught of the storm around Thisavrou shifts. A noticeable drop in temperature from the norm finds the planet settling at an alarming 54° F / 12° C during the day. And at night, temperatures fluctuate between this and 40° F / 4° C. All residents who tend crops will discover that some plants and other vegetation have withered without the warmer temperatures. An evacuation of all scientists and researchers on Chioni will be announced within the month due to its incredibly unstable surface temperature of -60° F / -51 C during the day and -150° F / -101° C at night. Access to some of the furthest burgs have been restricted until further notice because of this.

Savrii Notices:

  • As recently made public in Deputy TOD’s broadcast, a foreign presence has infiltrated Thisavrou using the bodies of its recent travelers. Presumed both intelligent and hostile, the contaminant has prompted a rapid response from the Savrii. Testing and Decontamination Centers have been established on Kauto and Chioni, and all persons who have traveled off-world in the last two cycles are called to present themselves for examination.

The basic procedure will last about six hours: medical tests, technical analysis, and a high-powered chemical wash designed to “make any stowaways run screaming”. All of this in addition to prolonged questioning as to their recent points of contact both on Thisavrou and outside. Parties who demonstrate cause for concern (including, of course, acknowledged contact with the contaminant) will be flagged in the Savrii’s database and required to return for twice-weekly visits to continue the procedures. Other than the phantom emptiness described previously, characters will feel no side effects of their exposure at this time. They may, however, find casual passerby avoiding them after a visit. Medical secrecy only goes so far against fear of plague, and that chemical wash also stains most creatures a cheery yellow-green.

  • Whatever its effect on your life personally, the social effects of the incursion are difficult to miss. Whispers and fear turn to paranoia and full-blown fights, and Thisavrou's population centers are packed with heated debates about safety versus exploration-- or sometimes, versus the explorers themselves. A small black-market trade in preventative medicine (real or otherwise) has sprung up, and rumors claim that the full list of infected persons can be bought too: by those who have the right connections and a lot of cash to pay.

Combating this upswing of violence and disorder? Thisavrou's intermediaries. Combination police force and negotiators, the intermediaries have always been crucial to the rule of law on Thisavrou. Recent events, however, have seen them advertising their presence more: some wearing a strip of silver cloth to mark their status and availability to help. If approached by one, characters will experience a supernatural sense of calm. They will find their concerns met with sympathy and understanding... but somehow also the exact right words to talk all parties down. Whether that means persuading your neighbor to leave you out of his conspiracy theories or explaining why you need to report in for testing... well, that depends on you.

  • Following the opening of travel to the planet Deslora, an unscrupulous individual smuggled back clownbee larvae. In the weeks since, the clownbees have become a mildly invasive species in certain areas of Region 3. Victims of clownbee stings report an irresistible urge to smear garish makeup across their faces and the need to consume as much sugar as possible. Citizens are cautioned to listen for telltale sounds of buzzing and honking, and be wary.

  • An organization that purchased samples from the planet Aueia several months ago is opening an exhibit at a museum in Region 1. Those who participated in gathering objects from the planet, as well as any who care to attend, are invited to attend a small opening reception for the exhibit, where they will be presented with a small gift from an ardent lover of that world's wildlife: a small whale carving made of stone with mild psychic properties. When touched with bare hands, the holder will receive a mental picture of someone who means a great deal to them, with perfect clarity, as if they saw them just a moment ago.

  • Mission notices have been posted to TABs for anyone interested in earning a little extra cash. Available missions are listed below:

  • Day 28 (May 8th) - While recent events have been difficult, the Department of Ingress Contingency Coordination is impressed by the rapid response of all Savrii in coming together to ensure public safety. A few holdouts, however, are rumored to be hiding their conditions-- and thereby putting not only themselves, but the entire population at risk. The department will therefore offer a reward of 100 sencs to citizens willing to report these cases, with an additional 200 senc bonus if the persons involved have been directly exposed to the contaminants. As Deputy TOD puts it, "you're only SAVING EVERYONE'S LIVES".

  • Day 36 (May 16th) - EN-Line systems throughout Thisavrou have begun to suffer a strange outbreak of mechanical failures that are leaving commuters by the wayside. Rumor claims some of Chioni's insectoid residents might be to blame. The Savrii will pay 50 sencs to anyone capable of confirming the problem, and 300 to anyone who solves it.

  • ingress travel info

Signatures are the base reason for traveling through the Ingress (aside from general exploration and monetary gain) and are used to discover the correct world visitors on Thisavrou wish to return to. Every visit through a different Ingress brings the technicians a little closer to finding it.

Missions are jobs or specific tasks listed on the TAB once new worlds are open for exploration. Be sure to check if Clearance Levels are required to accept some of these missions.

Clearance Levels are given to visitors for the length of time they have been on Thisavrou (or traveling on the Moira). Each CL offers access to certain things or incentives that others will not have. As of this month, security will be in place outside the Ingress to ensure no clearance violations occur.

The Ingress powers Thisavrou in every way: economically, socially, and as a literal source of light and heat. However, between the biohazard incident and the recent escalation of the storms, the hazards of free travel can no longer be ignored. As a result, on May 10, the Ingress will be sealed against intrusion.

While sealed, Ingress travel must be directly controlled by the technicians. Instead of directing the open channel of the Ingress, technicians will be opening access to specific worlds, and closing it immediately after. As a result, traveling parties will have certain timeframes to leave and to return. Missing your schedule can result in being stranded offworld until the next travel period comes. Additionally, no new arrivals will be able to appear while Thisavrou's Ingress remains sealed. ((For OOC ramifications, check out the new app schedule!))

    * Due to the closure and a recent push for regulation, no new worlds will be opened for exploration at this time. However, travel to established worlds will still be permitted, especially by individuals who have made contact there before. This opens up the opportunity for...

    Revisiting Old Haunts

Although the visit to Escoria was brief, wet, and unpleasant for most, others found new inspiration-- or old ties. A group of Region Four's Gorgóna have spent the last month researching their long and complicated family history and believe they have traced their ancestors directly to a clan of Escoria's more aggressive waterfolk. The Gorgóna are willing to pay 100 sencs to every individual who will assist in escorting them to their lost kin-- and making sure all parties survive the reunion long enough to celebrate. As their last encounter with the Savrii was strictly hostile, this is both a security mission and an opportunity for diplomacy-- and consequently, all travel groups require one member of Clearance Level 2 or higher to come with.

As many concerns have been brought up about the risks of their own Ingress travel, the Savrii are united in one certainty: that manipulation of the Ingress by other parties poses a far greater risk. A colony buried in the ruins of Thiri has been discovered engaging in their own in-depth studies on the use of Ingress energy. The Savrii consider this behavior to be a threat to the stability of all universes, and as with the Midway Hub, intervention is required at any cost.

A team is being sent to destroy all research data and technology onsite, along with anyone who interferes. As the colony's population is expected to interfere in its entirety, full combat gear will be provided to all volunteers. The mission will be supervised by high-clearance Savrii, and pay 250 sencs to each volunteer. All volunteers must be of at least Clearance Level 3, or personally vouched for by someone who is.

A year ago (by their local calendar), one of Thisavrou's established trade partners was approached by a pirate ship, one that had stolen from their world before. When the ruse was discovered, they attempted to force out the invaders, and in doing so, suffered a tragedy beyond proportion: the loss of an entire world.

Caducus Primary is no more. The mission announcement also notes that their sister planet, Caducus Secondary, also suffered massive losses in their efforts to force reparations from the murderers. On Day 35 of the current cycle (May 25th), a gathering is being held in the field of shattered glass where Caducus Primary was, to piece together a monument to the fallen. Thisavrou has pledged to send a delegation to assist. The pay will be minimal (30 sencs, to cover a missed workday), but this mission is open to all clearance levels.

Whatever goddamn thing is wrong with those people, Daryl feels pretty confident it's got nothing to do with them and everything to do with that place they went. It's ambiguous enough to give him the creeps, knowing all of them have traveled through that gate once or twice, but at least there's a little distance.

Going up there to be poked and prodded and spliced with Lord knows what-- well, it's a dick move to say I told you so but at least he can rest content in knowing they've been right to manage their exposure so far. He's not reporting in for decontamination as long as he's got a choice in the matter, and though they're not talking about it he's pretty sure his housemates agree. As far as they are from their world and the CDC, that kind of experience sticks with you.

When she comes to stand and watch he lets her stand and watch, going about his business and waiting for whatever she's got to say. They're both wearing themselves thin to try and make things feel safer, and he hasn't got as much room as he'd like to chide her. She's got a gift and all he can do is try to keep the price from being too much on her-- put her to bed when she knocks herself out on a kitchen stool, make sure she eats enough, keep the house safe.

Finally she breaks the silence so he stops and turns, looks at her instead of the yellowing leaves.

"Might buy a little time," he concedes. It's not much of a solution, though.

'Don't trust anything' isn't a particularly open-minded philosophy, but sometimes the correct one. Not that she's blaming anyone who was exposed, certainly if they'd known then they'd have done differently, but not wishing them ill doesn't mean she's willing to put herself, or Daryl or Carl, at risk if they don't need to. Paranoia never really leaves you once it's settled in, especially when it wasn't all in their heads much of the time.

But, that doesn't mean she can't help at all. Maybe. Now that she's got a stock to keep to themselves. She'll back into that topic slowly, and not all for the sake of Daryl's comfort.

"Maybe we could get a greenhouse up for some of the plots?" She's not sure it'd be enough to save the crops at this point, but it's not a bad plan long-term. Who knows what kind of weird weather they'll be seeing? "The glass might be a little expensive, but... I think I could figure something out."

By the way she hesitates, he can probably tell she's talking about more than the cash she's meticulously saved up. If he doesn't like the implication that she sell her magic wares and exploit sick people, well, neither does she. There's two angles here, though, and one of them isn't entirely cold-hearted, and the fact remains that if they can't grow crops then they need a new income source. Money can't buy happiness, but they both know that a lack of it can really screw you over.

Half of it isn't the worst idea. A greenhouse would be a good call, especially if the temperature is going to fluctuate, if the storm is gonna get weirder. Call it cynicism, or experience; trouble just seems inevitable, sooner or later. truth is right now he's more worried about the people than the sickness, whatever the hell it is. Maybe things aren't so different from home, that way.

"I got some cash," he mutters, eyeing her with a carefully neutral expression. Yeah, he knows what she's getting at and she can probably guess he's not a fan of the idea. Question is whether that's enough to make her back off it.

For now, he thinks, things aren't that bad. Might as well save her strength.

That look is familiar, as is this general arena of conversation, at least since she started getting his input before dashing off in hot pursuit of -- whatever. Hopefully it at least means something to him that she's initiating the conversation at all, whether or not he can tell that she actually came into it open to other options. Probably she'll have to get explicit for that, and for two people who have no trouble speaking their minds they have a shocking amount of trouble getting detailed when the subject matter dances around their feelings for each other.

"We'll be okay for a while. But if the crops don't come back, we'll need money anyway." Who knows if their no rent deal will hold if they're not producing, after all?

"It's not just that." Carol glances down, shuffling at some loose dirt with the toe of her boot, arms wrapping her long sweater around her. (It's the first time she's put on something Cinna made her since he left, in fact.) "I should do something to try and help, shouldn't I? If someone had that ability back home and didn't..." Well, she'd not have thought too kindly on them. Which is why she wouldn't be price gauging or anything, but if she's going to use her time and energy, more energy than is usually meant by the phrase, that's something a person should be compensated for, especially when they're trying to farm in going-on-Winter temperatures.

See, she still cares, in her way. She doesn't want to make friends but that doesn't mean she wants anyone sick or worse.

"If it makes you feel any better, I don't like it much either."

Pointing out the potential moral responsibility is a lot likelier to get him on her side than the money argument. He does all right, he thinks, selling what they don't use or tithe, picking up odd jobs here and there. People always need work done, and worst comes to worst he can hunt better than he farms.

But even if he's more inclined than he has been to cut the rest of these worlds off... Well, he doesn't really want to. Especially not when it's largely their group from the Moira being met with such suspicion, since all of them are such recent arrivals. Doesn't matter whether they went to the asteroid or not. He's seen the paranoia growing, and maybe they do have some responsibility there.

Looking away, he mulls over it a few moments.

"Don't even know what they got." Can she really cure it when it's a total mystery? Hell, if it's a parasite they puked out, is there anything left to cure?

That's as good as a yes when it comes to Daryl accepting something like this. It doesn't feel much like a win, though. She's not thrilled about spending whole days pale and passed out, but what's the alternative? Not even trying to help sounds a bridge too far, even for someone who's embraced isolation as fully as Carol.

"It'd help if I knew a little more," she agrees. "But it's worth a try. My intentions are what makes it work, so all I have to do is think about killing invaders for a few hours, and I'm good at that." It's as dark a joke as they come; still, maybe he'll smirk a little. Or do anything but look unhappy and worried like he is, for a second. Because of course there's more.

"Doing something that intense is going to take a lot." Probably he knew that, but it bore mentioning. Nothing to be done about it, so she moves on. "I was hoping you could handle the selling since I'll be stuck for a while."

It's not, as it may sound, a manufactured excuse to give him a distraction or a role to play, or even to get him out of the house while she's recovering, since she's pretty sure he'll be hovering over her for the worst of it. The honest truth is that she won't be able to physically handle doing both ends of it, even if she did have relationships out in the world which would be necessary for this sort of thing.

Really, he's not entirely sure he's on board with it; but unless he can come up with a better reason not to, they might as well talk through the logistics. And maybe... Maybe it'll make a difference, earn back a little goodwill from the people here. The money couldn't hurt, either... But the money alone wouldn't be a good enough reason.

The joke doesn't quite get a laugh out of him, unfortunately. It's just that the prospect of her wearing herself down overshadows anything else. Not just because he doesn't like to see it-- because he's still halfway worried they're gonna have to fight, or run, and he needs her to be in good shape for that.

"I guess," he murmurs. Selling isn't his strong point but he can get it done. "We oughta-- I dunno, find someone, test it."

    Start small.
    dum_spiro: (neutral :: glancing :: onward)

    [personal profile] dum_spiro 2017-05-27 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
She nods, figuring he'd say something like that. Before she goes all-in on a huge batch, a test would be the smartest thing. Certain as she is that whatever she makes won't harm anyone, she wouldn't feel right touting a medicine if they don't know that it works.

"Think you can find a volunteer? I'll get to work on something smaller, but it'll probably take two days." She's been making stew and bread for their healing stash, things that take a long time to prepare so more of her focus goes into it, and with some rest and a few of her premade energy snacks in the midst of it all she should be able to manage in that time. Sooner the better, right? "And then maybe eighteen hours before I could start again."

Carol figures she'd be safe enough home alone, even in that condition, with all the precautions they've taken. But it wouldn't surprise her if Daryl refused to leave for at least part of it, unless he had no choice.

It won't be so bad, she reasons. She did the same thing with Glenn's gunshot wound, cycling between cooking and frightening fatigue for days, until he was out of the woods and then some. But back then they had a lot more help, and Daryl had made himself a shelter in the woods so he hadn't had to see it. The past few days are the first time he had to hang around when she got to draining herself so much it was actually scary, and she can only imagine how it looks from his side.

The sooner the better, even if he'd rather they not have to.

    "I'll ask around."

No one comes to mind but he can think of people to start asking. And, hell, if it comes to it he can just grab green folks until someone says okay, right?

But the prospect of her taking on something tougher-- especially when she's already been driving herself to exhaustion-- doesn't sit real well either. He shifts in place, uneasy.

    "You sure?"

Of course she is, or she never would have brought it up, but he can't help asking.

She nods, understanding the formality. They lived long enough to get out of their world and into Teleios because they're fighters, the type that can't give up even when the doors are locked and the air's about to be set on fire. This is Carol's way of fighting for what's become another home when she didn't think that was possible, and for people that she claims not to want to know but still cares about anyway.

"I could use some more rest before I start. We could draw up some greenhouse blueprints, if you can take a break." While not a lie -- she needs to be tip-top before she starts another draining venture -- her suggestion is every bit as transparent as his question. A crisis is a crisis and she'll never complain about circumstances ending them in separate circles for a while, but his presence brings her such comfort, allows her to relax more than she can on her own, and it doesn't feel like too much to ask for a little down time in which she talks him into being her pillow. Especially if it's a working rest, more or less.

(And anyway, he's not doing much good out here. She'll never say it, but he probably knows it anyway. The allure of keeping busy rather than feeling helpless is something she'd be the worst hypocrite if she criticized.)

Scuffing at the dirt with his heel he grunts agreeably. Yeah, he knows, he's not accomplishing a damn thing-- only thing that might help now is the weather turning around, even with the greenhouse it's probably too late to transplant this bunch-- but there's only so much he can do to secure their property without menacing themselves, and idleness doesn't come easy right now.

Whatever this place is he means to protect it as long as they can.

There's not much more to be said, so he nods and turns abruptly, leaving the scrawny plot to follow her back toward the house.

If there's one thing they learned on Hershel's farm -- the original, not on Teleios -- it's that if a plague is going to find you then it's going to find you. Not that they shouldn't do all in their power to prevent it, though enough reason to focus on what they can perhaps fix and not what they can't. This plot is probably beyond help, but the greens that do okay in a cold snap aren't too bad.

Walking beside him, close, she glances up at his face and ponders saying something about how they'll manage to be okay, then in the end decides it's not all that helpful. Daryl has an optimism she only wishes she could muster, and it comes from him. Such words from her mouth might sound like meaningless platitudes even though she does mean them more than she used to.

Instead she grabs his hand, if it's free, or his elbow if not, and gives it a little squeeze. They're both here, and they'll fight to stay here, and that's something honest she can offer.
