[It feels a little like a knife in their chest, a sharp phantom pain that fades to a dull ache. Yes Kaworu had made no real secret to Frisk of how different he was from them, how much the Lilim around him baffle and frustrate him at basically every turn, but they had hoped...]
[Well. Maybe they had hoped too much.]
[...but...if that is true...]
Then...why do you keep hangin' out with me?
no subject
[You talk to him. You listen. You volunteer yourself to him... something he does not expect from others, nor want, nor even need.
No one has ever done that before, and he still has not decided how that feels.
Perhaps Frisk's motives are selfish... but if so, it's a selfishness that serves them both.
He looks at Frisk now, and smiles.]
I don't regret the time I've spent with you.
no subject
...
[It's not much. From anyone else it would feel like an insult, but Kaworu is so strange and distant to begin with, even a concession like this feels like a gift.]
[Frisk smiles back.]
'M glad.
no subject
This was what he'd wanted from Shinji. This moment, here. This time, spent together. All the emotions and satisfactions he'd been denied by his very existence.
But Frisk isn't Shinji. Frisk is Frisk.
So it's not what he wants at all. But it's still... nice, right? This... is nice. This is supposed to feel good. Right?
Or maybe that's only Lilim after all--maybe he really isn't enough like Lilith's innumerable child to understand it. The connections between people. That moment of trust. A smile.
And the old men made it sound like he was expected to feel nothing at all. But that isn't true, either. He doesn't... feel nothing. He just doesn't know what to call this sensation, this tiny, fleeting queasy note inside of him. He wants it to leave, but as soon as it's gone, he wants it back--
Madness.
Maddening.
And for what?
He can't worry about this right now.]
Are we ready?

[Frisk pauses for a moment before they cross the threshold into the flight deck, coking their head curiously up at Kaworu.]
Why did they call you Tabris? Is that a special name or somethin'?
no subject
Kaworu glances at Frisk; though his eyes and are smile are warm, his voice is somewhat airily detached.]
'Kaworu Nagisa' is the name of the Fifth child.
'Tabris' is the name of the 12th Angel.
They are both me.
It was decided that I should become two entities in the eyes of men, so that I could more easily fulfil my role.
no subject
[So it's like a nickname, sort of? Or a title, maybe.]
Which name do you like better?
no subject
.....
Kaworu stares at Frisk uncomprehendingly.]
What?
What kind of question is that?
[Maybe Frisk should have expected this kind of response. Having never been asked his preference in any matter at all... they're always asking him weird questions like this.
What is he supposed to say?
It's not like he cares what people call him.]
no subject
[Then again, he got confused when they asked if he likes candy, so.]
Um, I mean...do you want me to still call you Kaworu?
no subject
That depends. What do you want to do?
After all, I can't really stop you.
THERE it goes
I wanna do what you feel good about! If you like Tabris better, then I'll--
[........]
[WAIT A HECKING SECOND.]
They say you're a angel but they made you in a tube?!
no subject
I wasn't made in a tube.
[Said in the same tone in which he might have instead just said 'what.']
I was born from Adam's flesh and my existence was hidden, so that Lilim's hope might not be destroyed before it could be made reality.
[Once his confusion over Frisk's invented details is over, he manages to look bored, annoyed, and indifferent all at once.]
You know already, don't you? That names are a part of how Lilim gives meaning and definition to their world, and so understand it.
[You are Lilim, after all.
That's why you're so obsessed with his name, right?]
'Angel' is the name Lilim gave to all children of Adam.
[Heavenly messengers. Incomprehensible to mankind.]
no subject
[Sorry, Kaworu, Frisk doesn't speak 'pseudo-religious bullshit'. You might have to clarify a bit.]
But that's...why would they call you something nice and then be so mean to you after? If they gave you the name then...
[...no, they're saying it wrong. But Frisk doesn't really know how to say it right, either. They shake their head, and continue on into the flight deck.]
Did they think Adam is God or something?
Reads tag, quietly whispers "Adam is not God" under his breath
A more flexible thinker would be able to provide Frisk with something like 'kind of,' or 'a little yes and a little no.' Kaworu, however, does not have that mental flexibility, and is not sure how to clarify what he finds wrong, as opposed to what is on the right track but not quite perfect.
So he just frowns at Frisk pensively for several seconds before he finally answers with a related-but-not-directly-asked-for statement, which is very...
...very Kaworu, if nothing else.]
...it is said that in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. To fill this world, He first created the Angels, heavenly messengers sent to perform His divine will.
Afterwards, He created Mankind--beings of free will, so He might have someone to receive His benefits.
[Are you following this, Frisk? Probably not. He is echoing SEELE's scriptures: words that contain the facts of his world, but coded heavily within very religious language.]
we chose this hell
[Unfortunately, they do not have the benefit of sitting in front of several Wikipedia articles. So mostly it's just confusing.]
You...you mean the Angels came first...right? 'S that why Lilim are the...the use....
[Their vocabulary is pretty good, but it's not perfect.]
no subject
The children of Lilith, the false successor from the black moon.
[The 'usurpers' of a world that cannot contain them both. He stops there, though, looking down for a moment at the floor like perhaps it has affronted or bored him.
Or maybe it's just a floor, and Kaworu has his own interests outside of it.]
...but to be honest, I don't really care about any of that.
[If he did, he would be following SEELE's orders instead of pursuing the Third Child for his own reasons.]
no subject
[But they have something else they need to do. And it's not like they can't ask him more about these things later. Kaworu can be harder to read sometimes, but impatience is not exactly subtle.]
Mmm...okay. I'll go ask Rinzler about the shuttle, okay?
[Annnnd they're off!]
