I wouldn't have already warned you. [He laughs.] Just meet me inside.
[He pulls his goggles down over his eyes and takes off. He makes a pit stop, scooping up a little girl from the living room, before he deposits her on the couch in his basement. The child will be calm about the whole thing, curling up in Peter's lap and continuing to play with the doll in hand like this is a daily occurrence. She doesn't even look up immediately when Sans enters the room, though Peter does and points to the little girl with excited gestures.]

As it was, he blinks in a half second behind them, eye sockets widening slightly.]
Oh, uh, hey kid. [He's talking to Peter, but looking at the little girl. She doesn't seem to notice him yet, though Peter's excited fanfare is enough to make his soul warm up a bit. Heh. Relatable.] Should I...?
[He motions to his disguise. Sans was under the impression from Peter that the house was a safe space, but scaring a little girl wasn't on his agenda. He'd had enough of that for the last few months.]
no subject
Remember last Halloween when I let you stay up and watch those old movies with me? They had all those skeletons in it? My friend looks like one of them.
[The girl's attention jumps from the doll to Sans, wide eyes staring him down. Peter taps her on the head trying to draw her back in.]
So don't freak out okay? We like him, so don't make him feel bad.
[She looks back to Peter, to Sans again and nods. Peter grins like this is a victory, looking to Sans.]
It's okay, go ahead dude.
no subject
Heh, don't mind me, kiddo. [He explains, bracing the little girl as he takes off his scarf, hat, and sunglasses.] Wouldn't want to rattle ya.
[Grinning with a hopeful edge, Sans punctuates the joke with a quick shake of his left arm. Right on cue, his radius and ulna rattle together with a few clacks.]
no subject
I'm not a kiddo, I'm a princess. Everyone has to call me 'highness'.
[She lisps over the words, voice quiet.
Peter is biting his lip behind her, trying to keep from laughing.]
no subject
Perpetual smile quirking, he steps a little closer, offering a bony hand to shake. How else do you greet a new pal, after all?]
Pleasure to make your acquaintance, your highness. [He bows dutifully, if without much flourish. Sans likes kids, but not enough to break his spine over.] They call you that because you're royal or because you're gonna be tall someday?
no subject
Because I’m royalty. I’m gonna marry a prince one day and own a castle. [She pauses.] But I’m gonna be really tall too. Taller than Peter even.
[Peter snorts from where he’s still lazing on the couch, a pile of popsicle wrappers suddenly in his lap betraying what he’s using their short conversation to do. He gets up, taking slow steps over to the little girl to ruffle her hair before zipping around the room to start his stereo and a few of the TVs.]
Don’t let her fool you Sans. She’s not allowed to get married. Not even to a prince.
no subject
[He settle on the floor, subconsciously smiling more genuinely than he has in some time. Sure, Frisk was a kid, but it's been a while since he got to hang out with one that didn't have the weight of the world on their shoulders. Brings him back.]
They got a name? [He asks, gesturing to the doll.]
no subject
[She shrugs, smiling shyly and hands the doll over for inspection.]
She's Dorothy like the movie. I was calling her Wanda but then real Wanda got mad and said I couldn't. And said I stole her lipstick but I didn't, I just borrowed it and that's not the same as stealing. 'sides, you can't steal something if it never leaves the house. [A snort from Peter in the background; he's going through Twinkies at an alarming rate in front of a TV.]
You're on my side right? Not mean Wanda's. I'll let you be a knight when I have my castle if you say yes.
no subject
Sounds like she should lip-stick to her own business. [He grins, kneeling down to be at her eye level. To be fair, he doesn't have to kneel that far.] I don't make a habit of siding against royalty, your highness.
no subject
In the background, Peter's stopped on a news program. There's a muffled sound of a gunshot on the TV, a speech being delivered and dissected by reporters.
The little girl has started giggling, answering the title with another curtsy.]
Then you can be part of my kingdom. Sir Skeleton the, um. What's a good knight word, Peter?
[He's staring at the screen, doesn't say anything until she repeats his name. His voice is forcibly calm, the way he's squashing the snack hand a giveaway to his state.]
You need to go upstairs. I have to talk to Sans, okay? Big kid stuff. Important stuff.
[He turns his head just enough to catch Sans' eyes. He's grown pale, he looks worried.]
no subject
He meets Peter's eye, nodding once, before turning back to the little girl.]
Slovenly. Sir Skeleton the Slovenly. [He offers, shooting her a wink.] We're just gonna be a minute, your highness. While you're up there, try to find me some sorta armor? Knight's gotta have armor, right?
[She seems unsure, but nods all the same, gaze switching back and forth between Peter and Sans before slowly climbing the stairs. Once the door clicks shut, Sans turns to Peter.]
What's wrong, kid?
no subject
The reporter is talking about public safety concerns, about what mutants could be capable of, and the clip shows the president introducing the Sentinels again.]
They built an army to come after us.
[He sounds shell shocked. The news switches to a clip of a man in red armor again, shouting to the cameras about mutant supremacy.]
Because of Erik. They're going to kill us because of him.
no subject
Sans works his jaw in place, uneasy..]
Maybe it's a misunderstanding, kid. [He crosses over to Peter, trying to ground the kid with a hand over his shoulder.] Let's not jump to any conclusions.
