...Oh.
[So that's what that smell is. Well, she's still willing to choke it down. Lead the way, Luke.]
no subject
[Though he can't imagine that she will.]
Returned, you have. [Yoda looks Luke over, and raises his staff to poke at Luke's exposed metal arm.] And lost much. But what did you learn?
[Luke sits on a fallen log, somewhat lessening the height difference.] A great deal, Master. But- [He gestures to Leia, and Yoda hrrms and turns to her.] A great destiny, you have. Much power, and much pain. Seen it, you have... and you will again.
[Interrupting this critically cryptic moment is Luke, piping up with a squeaky voice and a shocked expression.] You knew? Why didn't you tell me?
no subject
Inwardly, she does wonder where he comes from, though. He can't have always lived on Dagobah, can he?
There's hardly time to think too much about it, anyway; Yoda moves swiftly from Luke's prosthesis to...well, all of her. For a moment, she's frozen in her place, staring down at him in shock. ...And you will again.
After a moment, she recovers herself and crouches down before him.]
It seems you know me, Master. [She smiles politely, holding out a hand to shake.] Luke's told me so much about you.
no subject
[Yoda turns away, begins walking toward the end of the clearing.] Come. Even less time, you give me.
[Luke gets up to follow, but his expression is conflicted. He looks over to Leia with an apologetic expression.]
no subject
And the worst part is, he isn't wrong.
She straightens up and shrugs at Luke when Yoda isn't looking. What matters here is that they take advantage of this time--for her brother's sake as much as her own.]
What will we be doing?
no subject
Yoda, you can't- you didn't want me to go here.
A test.
And I failed, I know that now, but-
Again, fear for your friends, you do. Learned, you have not.
[Luke falls silent.]
no subject
I have a bad feeling about this.
She shoots Luke another look, questioning, and keeps her eyes peeled for an explanation. It's eerie, and the air feels thicker in her lungs, but if Luke's master can walk in without fear, so can she.]
What kind of test, Master Yoda?
no subject
Take only what you need. [Yoda gestures toward the cave, before waddling away, looking for a place to sit and wait.]
[Luke takes a step forward.] You'll do fine. [He reaches out to squeeze your hand.] Nothing here can really hurt you. I promise.
no subject
But she can't linger on a tiny, withered being's cryptic comments when she's apparently gotten herself into some kind of test. And not just any test--one that savors of the same darkness she recognizes from the brief occasions she's spent in the emperor's presence.
Whatever this place is, it feels evil. Her brother's reassurance that she'll be fine only tells her he thinks she's afraid, which she suspects is a conclusion drawn from his own experiences.]
What's going on, Luke?
no subject
[Yoda clears his throat.]
...I wouldn't let you go alone if I thought it was really dangerous. Just... frightening.
[From his tree branch, Yoda calls,] Dither, Jedi do not.
no subject
[Leia rolls her eyes--it's not dithering to ask for an explanation beforehand, that's called strategizing--and takes that as her cue to go. On her way into the cave, she draws her blaster.
Of course she can feel the darkness. It slinks past her, through her, like a stalking panther and leaves every hair at the nape of her neck prickling. But what's the point of walking into it willingly? When it isn't even a darkness connected to the Empire? This is a boondocks refusal to back down in the face of a challenge, and it seems unnecessary.
On the other hand, she's not about to play the coward in front of a Jedi master.
When she's far enough in that she can no longer hear Yoda or Luke behind her, the point arrives in the form of a mist-shrouded figure. His cape is blacker than any of the shadows around them, and the mechanical expansion and contraction of his lungs is all too familiar a sound. Dread pools in her gut as she stares up into the empty eyes of Darth Vader's mask.
He says nothing, only raises a hand, as though debating the merits of crushing her windpipe. Leia shoots on instinct, firing bolt after bolt into his chest, his shoulder, his head. A crack like dry firewood, a burst of light and sound, and Vader falls back.
His mask is broken, his face exposed. But it isn't his face--she has no idea what his face could be. It's dark-eyed, long-nosed, soft-lipped, pale-cheeked: Kylo Ren.
She yells something without words and fires again and again through the rising smoke and fog, even as her feet carry her back from the crumpled figure. Until she's at the mouth of the cave, still staring into it, she shoots.
Never turn your back to an enemy. Never assume your first shot was enough.]
no subject
[Yoda, still on his branch, hrrms disapprovingly.] Such anger, hmm. For one so young, much hate you have.
no subject
How you send people into caves like that and expect them not to be a little annoyed is beyond me. [That's said over her shoulder, and this time, it is for Yoda's pointy ears.]
no subject
People, hmm, no. But a Jedi? [He nods, and points to Leia.] Master their emotions, a Jedi must. Hide them, they do not.
no subject
[She's turned to face Yoda entirely now, looking up at him with barely concealed (whoops) impatience.]
Do you start all your students out with...whatever that was? Or did I just get lucky?
no subject
[He gets down from his branch, and begins walking toward them. Luke, for his part, has no idea what to do. Oddly, it reminds him of Han and Leia on Hoth, and the knowledge that his presence was required, but not, actually, his input.]
The last of the Jedi, you are. No time. Difficult, your journey will be. Match it, your training must. A Jedi must let go of fear, hmm, anger, pain. [He raises his staff to poke at her.] Suffering.
no subject
And I haven't lied to you. [She reaches out to push the staff away from her, in hopes of stopping him before one of his jabs connects with her body.] What do I have to hide from you? I hardly know you.
no subject
[Luke is left kind of gaping, unsure where to turn. Follow, or...? He'll take Leia's lead, whatever that is.]
no subject
[The worst of all of this is the fact that she knows what Yoda means. For the majority of the galaxy, she's princess, senator, and rebel leader, not human. And that means that what she feels will always come second (or third, or fourth) to the rebellion's needs.
For once, someone's legs are shorter than hers, so it only takes a step or two to catch up. This conversation isn't over, Master.]
What I do isn't hiding. Being professional isn't hiding.
no subject
Much anger, I feel in you. Much pain. [Yoda doesn't turn his head to look at Leia as he speaks.] Rise above these things, a Jedi must.
no subject
[The tone she answers with doesn't suggest a desire to do anything of the sort.]
no subject
no subject
[Come at her, Yoda.]

[This is the point where Luke starts holding his breath.]
