Up until she realizes that the merchants think they're suckers. Offended, her smile melts away and she turns a glare on them.]
Who cares how we're dressed? We look better than anyone else here. Come on.
[She starts walking further into the area, dragging him along with her. They don't get too far ahead before her annoyance fizzles out, and she looks up at him with a lopsided grin. She leans in a little closer to him so she can quietly ask him,]
So, you know other languages, huh?
no subject
[That seems to have discouraged the last one, and he turns back to Cassandra.] Only a little. Jawa can't speak Basic, their mouths don't... [He's never actually seen a Jawa mouth.] ...make the right sounds.
no subject
You'll have to teach me to say something.
[The second she says it, she pulls away from him to hurry on up ahead to one of the many booths. She's excited to see such a bustling place where people are just going about boring day to day life, it's been a while since she's seen it. ]
no subject
[He hurries after her, and they end up at a speeder booth, manned by a soft-spoken weequay. Try as he might (and he isn't trying very hard), he can't hold on to a feeling of annoyance in the face of Cassandra's obvious curiosity. He leans over to her.]
Bo shuda means 'hello'.
no subject
[Not really one to ever be super cheerful in her greetings, her enthusiasm comes from the fact she's getting to meet a new species as well as a new language and she's proud of herself. She almost lifts her hand up to wave, but since she's not sure if that might be offensive or not, she drops her hand. And steps in close enough to Luke so she can try to discreetly whisper,]
How do you ask how much it costs to ride the speeder?
[She points over at one behind the merchant.]
no subject
If you want to ask the price, say kava che copah?
no subject
Kava che copah?
[It comes out a little clumsy and obviously untrained, but given that English isn't her native language she's relatively good at picking up things on the go and working with them. She's not sure how exactly they plan on paying since neither of them have any money that they know of, but she's still having a good time anyway.]
no subject
[Tatooine, Dagobah and Hoth: all have taught Luke the importance of supplies and stocking up beforehand. He's got his utility belt with ration bars and emergency supplies, and, more importantly, a few cannisters of water.]
[He turns to Cassandra with a smile that's maybe a little too cocky for a proper Jedi.] He says it's very expensive. [Luke rolls his eyes, and pulls a cannister from his belt. It's a terrible deal, and he knows it-- that speeder is an outdated model, and he doesn't believe the vendor's claims about a 'special' racing engine-- but Luke won't be staying on this planet. Let the vendor think he's a sucker, if Cassandra gets to ride in a speeder. He shakes the cannister, so the vendor can hear liquid sloshing around within it.] Bagon?
no subject
So she briefly glances up at Luke, then back at the vendor, just in time to see the two come to an agreement. The vendor says something she doesn't understand but assumes is positive, because they gesture toward the speeder in question. Excited, Cassandra curiously looks up to Luke once again. She leans in until they're pressed side to side, and she can whisper right into his ear.]
Does this mean we get to ride a speeder?
no subject
[He waves off the vendor's offers of insurance and an auxilliary fusion belt (at a special today only discount!); whatever problems this speeder may have, it won't be a problem for more than a few hours. He takes the proferred keys and starts the engine.]
[With a bit of a thump, the speeder slowly rises two feet from the ground.]
no subject
Thank you.
[It means a lot to her that he's arranged for this, and she wants to show her gratitude.
She sits in the driver's place, looking over all the controls. It feels like she should tell him she never officially learned to drive back home. But this isn't a car, and he's here with her. What's the worst that could happen?]
I don't have any idea what I'm doing.
[And then -]
How fast do you think this thing can go?
no subject
[He looks at Cassandra, sitting in the driver's seat, and considers asking if she's ever driven anything with a yaw before. But he decides to err on the side of Cassandra knowing what she's doing; she's a capable woman, no one can doubt that.]
[He taps the ignition control board.] We can find out. AB's are made by... Hraki, I think? They don't usually go for speed, more maneuverability.
no subject
Her eyes look over to the ignition control board and she concentrates on it, attempting to figure out what everything does without asking. The end result is the speeder jerking forward, almost plowing over the booth completely. It just narrowly avoids disaster.
Sheepish, she nervously chuckles, and looks over at him.]
Maybe you should tell me how to drive this thing.
[It's important to note that she's not budging from her seat. He needs to verbally tell her what to do. Quickly. ]
no subject
[He leans over and points at various keys and controls.] That's main steering, left, right. That's the yaw-- it orients you in the air, how high you want to go up, that sort of thing. AB models don't have the power to fly, but you can get a few good feet up there. Uh, that's the ignition control, so you can keep track of how much power you're putting into the engine, and control your drift speed with back-boosting.
[Is he going too fast? He feels like he's going too fast.] Here, uh... pull this lever, and then steer.
[That should move them forward, and hopefully into the road without killing anyone.]
no subject
Her hand goes to the lever, pulling it, and it's no work from there to steer.
Things are more under control this time, and she manages to start heading back toward open space. ]
What's the most impressive thing here? I want to see it.
[And recklessly drive the speeder to it, clearly.]
no subject
She's the center of Mos Eisley. Literally, I mean; the whole city is built around her.
no subject
Did it crash there and they just decided to turn it into a tourist attraction or something?
[She doesn't get the appeal, but in some weird way it's nice because it reminds her of the plentiful destroyed and abandoned things back home. So she steers the speeder, keeping an eye on the ship so she can turn corners and head in the right direction.]
no subject
no subject
As he talks, she starts to feel a sense of eagerness, because if people in a place like this can crash and build up a settlement, then there's hope for people back home building communities too. The idea of it is enough to make her smile as she looks to the ship, stopping the speeder while they're still a good distance away.]
It's amazing that so much has built up around it.
[She glances over at him, curious.]
Do you live somewhere around here?
no subject
[He looks over to Cassandra.] I used to. We lived out on the Great Chott sandflats, that's... [He looks at the position of the suns overhead, and checks the chrono on the speeder's dashboard.] West, I think. [He points.] We had a farm right on the edge of the wastes.
no subject
Without crashing, hopefully.]
What kind of farm was it?
no subject
The only kind of farm you can have on Tatooine: moisture. I've heard of other kinds, but I've never seen them. The Darklighter farm should still there, we can go see it, if you want. I haven't seen Dera in years.
[Of course, that connection to the real world, time and place and setting, reminds him that this isn't just a sight-seeing visit. He knows why he left. He's grown up in Mos Eisley, he barely notices the troopers wandering the streets, but they're there. Things are different now.]
But... if anyone asks, my name is, uh, Laze Whitesun.
no subject
[She says it right after he's finished telling her his fake name, eyes widening as she resists laughing.]
Should I ask why, or is it something you don't want to talk about?
[As they pull away from the populated area, Cassandra keeps an eye on the direction they're headed. It looks like there's nothing but dunes up ahead, so she decides that a speeder ride is made much more fun while going in serpentine motions.
Up far ahead, still a good distance away, there's figures slowly shuffling their way through the sand. Cassandra isn't paying them much attention yet, but she's spotted them easily enough. They'll be easy to bypass, she figures.]
no subject
[So concerned with the thought sandtroopers and keeping an eye on Cassandra's driving, Luke doesn't see the figures on the horizon. The Force whispers a warning, but he's too distracted to hear it.]
no subject
A bounty? You really don't seem like the kind of guy who would have a price on his head. What did you do to deserve one?
[She slows down some so she can talk to him and not have to concentrate so much on not crashing and killing them both.]
