far from nowhere
"the trees rustle in the evening when we stand uneasy before our own thoughts."

With the events of Del Pascia behind the Moira, things are only now beginning to settle—and not very well. Through the combined efforts of some of the crew, D-E-L and her permanent residents were incinerated into the dust of space. While it’s not the most peaceful end, it is one, and not many are going to be thinking back on how nice Del Pascia’s facilities were for quite some time. Repairing what they could of the ship’s interior and putting as much distance between the Moira and the prison as possible, those aboard are informed by Navigation that they are approaching another planet. This means, of course, the potential for better supplies, as some things are beginning to dwindle, and the Captains elect to dock so long as the crew follows protocol.
WELCOME TO AMISSIS-RE

Amissis-Re is an unregistered planet with no documented histories or signs of life. The Moira’s Navigation crew have scanned the planet for any usable resources and have discovered a faint signal emitting from beneath the surface of Amissi-Re. Using the transporters and any other crafts located in the Cargo Bay, the crew are able to travel to the source of the signal. Upon arriving in its exact location, they’ll find a small series of lakes that lead to a tower-like structure that appears to be in use. Crew must cross a poorly assembled bridge system that sways and dips when weight is applied to it in order to gain access to the entrance. Once there, a woman comes out to greet them and explains, excitedly, that she is so very happy that they have come to Amissis-Re.

Everyone can go home.

Their host insists that she has done the impossible and has somewhat fixed the Ingress that’s been built on Amissis-Re a long time ago, and what’s more, she can send crew home for short bursts of time. Upon following this woman inside, crew will find that the planet is not, in fact, barren at all. Diving deep into the underbelly of Amissis-Re, it’s like an eternal factory of machines, and while vast, for whatever reason, it also seems incredibly welcoming...

LEAP OF FAITH ( 05.01 and on )
The barren planet of Amissis-Re is devoid of vegetation and organic life except for a lone woman, and the planet itself is an intricate honeycomb of machines that go for miles below the surface. Yet, that seems insignificant and unimportant in comparison to the news that the crew has just received. After Thán has looked at the Ingress, he tells the crew that he cannot say for certain that it is properly functioning, but Emiri native, Ben Link, will volunteer to test it out.

An elevator takes crew down to a glass platform that overlooks an inverted Ingress portal. In order to return home, the Moirans will have to take a leap of faith and jump in. Ben, in order to show his commitment to the crew and willingness to help get them home, takes that jump with Captain Thán seconds behind him. Jumping feels like dropping through wind; lights swirl, it’s warm, and a soft buzzing encompasses you as you fall. You don’t feel the landing. One moment you’re falling, and the next, you’re in a new world.

A few hours pass before a similar elevator rises from below and to the left of the Ingress, stopping beside the platform. Ben and Thán step out unharmed.

It works, and everyone can temporarily go home. Will you jump?

COMBINE THE EXTREMES ( 05.01 and on )
The woman that greeted the crew and led them to the platform will allow anyone that wants to go home the opportunity to go. There’s only one catch: it’s not permanent. She’s worked for years to fix the Ingress so that she can return to her own home but hasn’t been able to make the trip an everlasting one. Everyone always comes back. Always. They go for a few hours, at first, but that amount of time increases with each visit.

The one guideline, she says, is that you can’t go alone. Each trip requires a partner, or it becomes too much for the mind to bear. These rules are simple: the world takes shape depending on who jumps first, but if crew go hand-in-hand and leap at the same time, the worlds combine. This new world will be populated with people that existed in both and may appear to be a jarring combination of both worlds. It may seem unusual, but if the woman is asked, she’ll explain that the combined world does exist as there are more universes than can be imagined. The Ingress tries to take the person to their own home, their original home, but when jumping together, it finds the closest possible match and deposits them there instead.

From that point on, you can travel the world together or split up, but remember, this world is a living, functioning world. It doesn’t matter if it’s the home of one crew member or a combination. You meet other people. You can get hurt. You influence and are influenced by others.

Be cautious, and enjoy your visit “home”.

LINGER ON ( 05.05 and on )
The more times the Amissis-Re Ingress is visited, the more it seems that your trips last longer and the experience becomes even more vivid. More real and harder to distinguish from the current reality that you know. It’s difficult to explain why, but you get the feeling that maybe if you went without the aid of the host, that perhaps you’d be able to stay. Forever. It takes some subterfuge, but in time, you see your chance: she’s nowhere in sight, and you take it.

The world you are in now is completely your own, whether another crew member accompanied you or not. The people you know are there, everything around you is exactly as you remember. A few hours pass, and you don’t feel that familiar tug, that invisible hook at the base of your spine that signals that your visit is over. Even more time goes by, and you’re still in that world, your home. When the first day has passed, you begin to question if you’ll ever go back, or if life on the Moira was all a dream. The person with you won’t be able to convince you otherwise, and they’ll start to feel less real, a stranger that you used to know.

There’s only one way to go back to the Moira. Someone from the other side has to come in and retrieve you both. Once in, contact with a third will jump-start a link through the Ingress, and it will pull all crew back to the platform.

"I'm hoping he hasn't got any. As much as I like a challenge, I'd like to actually get to the guy sooner rather than later." Too excited, apparently. It had been a long, long while since he could do something like this and he wanted to get to the people who were at least close to the top.

Liquid kicked the guy he'd shoved over as he went by, following Niko along. He nodded approvingly at the bloody mess as he moved past that, almost casually elbowing another guy who seemed to appear out of nowhere (but had just been hiding a bit).

"Don't just toss your minions at us!" he called. "They're embarrassing. At least give us a proper fight!"

Mm, more you have to say. [Yoda keeps walking, but he does, finally, look up at Leia.]

Being told that thirty two is grossly old is a real kick to the ego. And says more than anything else could about the state of the place she comes from. Crap. He'd never think of the Commonwealth as somewhere to take someone to keep them safe, but hearing her utter amazement at people living to see three decades makes him want to bring her here if they ever find a permanent way home, or ask someone else on Moira to take her to their home. Anywhere but back where she came from, where it seemed inevitable to her that she'd die before thirty.

"It's still kind of dangerous here and too many people die too young, but living to thirty's not that weird here. And some people, who are epically awesome and really good at survival can live to be, like, almost fifty or more."

"I can do bad things with a gun. I don't think he did it because he was psychic. I think he did it because he was a bitter, angry child looking for like minds."

In fact, after talking to the man that child went on to spend his remaining years with, he was certain of it.

"There are covert government groups that try to take advantage of them. Not many people would know they exist, but I expect they would react with fear. I caught hell when I was a kid for just having blond hair. Can't imagine what a child with special abilities would have to endure from his peers if everyone knew."

"It's not real but it's almost too real." Right down to the shaker of cinnamon that sits on the counter. She waits beside him, claiming a seat at the counter and tapping her nails against the edge. It's not an entirely impatient gesture, more like she needs proof that this place is solid. Seeing it, feeling it - even the smells are the same as when she walks into the diner back home - all of that causes her to question the kind of magic at work here. The only thing that gets her out of it is being pulled back to the memory of Neal stealing a case of chocolate for her. They may have a history of criminal actions, but at the time it'd felt like a "make your own Halloween" scenario. She never got to enjoy the holiday as a kid as much as she did when she was with him.

"You remember when Henry snuck out of here on you?" When Neal was trying to bribe him with a sundae? It's a much more recent memory but - "If you think I've stolen your moves, you should see what our kid gets up to." Everything from sneaking around to popping up in the back seat. "He's definitely his father's son."

Can't be if I've never heard of it. Besides, Pink Floyd is the greatest thing ever.

[Welcome to the 70s, Allison.]

Right. Again, going to pretend I understand that.

[He comes from the era that thought Breakfast at Tiffany's was acceptable. He's not all that educated on what's acceptable and what's not. He's only got the basics from the rights movement.]

Are you done freaking out and ready to go?

"Yeah, I'm hoping I can build up a reputation with this. 'The mysterious man and his deadly sequin pistol.' I want the sight of purple sparkles to strike fear in the hearts of my enemies. I think I can pull it off."

Building any kind of reputation at all would undermine his ability to gather intel, but it's a fun fantasy. If he ever comes back the Commonwealth permanently, he may have to retire the gun but for now he likes his pistol. He likes that the Girl enjoyed making it and likes that it made Ava laugh.

More or less. You won't notice, it's no big deal if you're like weirded out by that or worried Than's going to care.

[He doesn't even think of the possibility that anyone could imply he wasn't strong enough.]

Why would they? Someone would have to see us for them to talk about it? [He snorts, steps behind Ben and cups his hand around the man's neck.]

You really have no idea how fast I am, huh? Lucky you to find out first hand.

[He doesn't give Ben a warning, he just grabs Ben around the waist with his other hand and moves. For Peter, all he sees is the slow passing of scenery and people moving like bugs swimming in honey. For Ben, Peter can only imagine it must be the opposite, a swirl of color and noise and wind beyond comprehension.

They're in the alley near a dime store within seconds. Peter doesn't take his hands off Ben immediately, waiting to see if the man can keep his balance.]

[Anakin nearly chokes when he sees them. Slightly altered and refined for different body types as the armor may be, there's no mistaking it. And all the appearance does is lead to more questions: why replace the clones at all? Why the clones in the first place? What in the hell happened to create this Empire?

...What if Fives had been right?

He doesn't take long to try and answer them, instead pulling out his lightsaber to deflect the incoming blaster bolts. He doesn't spare a look sideways, but still asks between deflections:]

How's it coming?

[Everything else can wait.]

What tears Frisk does shed are quiet, only known by the wetness soaking into Sans' shirt and tracing tracks down Frisk's cheeks. A sniffle, maybe two...but his hand on their back is steadying enough, and the calm feeling of the night wraps them both in a cocoon. After a while the tears die out, but Frisk doesn't move away.

It's calm, watching the night sky and looking for the constellations they know, just sitting and enjoying the silence. How long has it been since Frisk really rested like this, just stopped to appreciate the time they have?

Frisk thinks about saying something, but the silence has words of it's own. They sigh, and relax a little bit more against Sans' side, just shy of starting to drift off.

Frisk nods, and tugs Asriel along.

On the other side, the pair of them come out in the living room of a modestly-sized apartment. The furniture is a little sparse, but the signs of who is living here are unmistakeable. Toriel's knitting supplies sit in a basket next to her comfortable chair, and along the walls are bookshelves filled to the brim with old, worn books, and a few that look much newer. A few of Frisk's things are scattered about as well, toys and games that are stored in easy reach along with a few items clearly meant to be used outside that are leaned against the wall near the door.

But most notably might be the playpen set up in the corner of the room, with a helpful paper taped to the side playfully labeling it 'Gay Baby Jail'. Inside sits a potted flower, currently staring at the pair of them in confusion and something that might be akin to horror.

Frisk doesn't seem to notice, their eyes wide and expression incredibly distant. They're a bit busy dealing with some mental shouting that is a nearly direct mirror to what Flowey's going to start screeching about in approximately three seconds.

She's not even mortal, so Miller shouldn't even concern himself with the physics behind a floating spirit. Though she could technically walk around if she felt so inclined... It just seemed easier to simply to remain afloat and free to move around as she pleased.

"My creator. Her role is deeply tied with the creation of our realm and so there is a 64% probability that whatever explanation I can offer will be difficult to understand. Do you wish for me to explain nonetheless?"

Fi doesn't start singing again while she waits for Miller's response. And as blunt as Fi can be, her habit of dumping information seems to be stymied by some modicum of politeness. Or maybe it's an interface problem? Either way...

"The portal must have locked onto the duplicate Lost Light before the DJD's attack the first time you jumped through," he remarks, eyes looking over the serrated teeth marks of an ununtrium coated chainsaw on the Overlord's armor. Being on the duplicate would certainly explain why security was feeling twitchy enough to shoot at him the first time he'd gone through.

"It must have been the quantum foam."

He exits the deactivated slow cell, stepping into the ship halls and getting a good look around the doors. It didn't take long to reorient himself. Even on a ship as massive as the Lost Light, he'd taken care to become familiar with it's halls.

"I'm next to Overlord's cell. And you?"

"Nothing ever goes completely right. But that's fine too. As long as we work things out."

Bruce likes that, actually. Because one can't know something good if they don't experience something bad. Granted, he would've gladly gone without some of the truly horrible things he's lived through, both home and on the Moira, but anyway.

He smiles at her words, head dropping a little, his fingers still playing with hers, tips tracing along the webbing between them.

"You make me very happy too."

[Niko jolts at the sudden hand, but isn't the type to raise a fist in surprise. He just jumps. Turns. Looks at Jay in mild surprise.]

Actually, yeah. We got it. And a dart board! I got these darts already. I had been using one me and Snake made from cardboard in the Cargo Bay.

[Then he took a longer look at Jay.]

Why, you want to use it? [The pool table or the dart board.]

It's honestly a little disctracting that he's doing that, in a very nice sort of way, but not so much that she can't stick with the conversation.

Will she ever not feel like she's melting a little when he gets all shy like that? Probably not.

"You're gonna have to live with the fact that I am just never going to be as zen as you are about things."
hyperkinesia: (None of this smells a little funky?)

[personal profile] hyperkinesia 2016-05-16 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
For what it's worth, he's not doing it on purpose —neither the touching, nor the shyness. Actually that probably only makes it worse, right? Yep. Anyway.

"And you'll have to live with the fact that I'm going to keep trying to get you to be."

Pursing his lips, he shrugs, threading their fingers together.

It's all delightful so it's not a problem. Besides, she does plenty to distract him entirely on purpose so it's only fair that he get a few points in every now and then even if he isn't trying.

"I don't know how I'll be able to cope but... I guess I'll have to try."

"Good."

Around that time the waiter comes with their food and drinks, so Bruce draws his hand away reluctantly, leaning back to give him room to set down the plates and glasses, and thanking him as he leaves them to their dinner.

"Bon appétit?"

"Most people can do bad things with a gun. Most people with guns can't read people's minds and tear people apart." He had a point, though. She thought of LaCroix, striking out and blaming everyone else for his own selfishness. Undead life had made him paranoid, selfish, and greedy. At least he didn't have Auspex as she did.

"I'm new to all of this." It was the closest she could get to telling the truth without giving away everything. She wasn't lying, really, just obscuring where the power came from. "Even with the way people are on the Moira, it's not something I want people to know for that very reason." Ava doubted the captains would lock her up and use her. They had to already know what she was. But if she started to prove to be a danger... "The less people know, the better."

"The next deck up," he replies flatly. "I'll come down."

Not that he really wants to see Overlord's corpse, but Riptide assumes he can avoid it as long as he doesn't look into the slow cell.

"Maybe if I jump in again I'll come out at the right place. This was obviously just a system error."

He takes a bite from his food too, humming quietly at the taste, smiling as he slides another serving onto his fork.

"Well, we won't be here permanently so I think we'll be fine if we break a law or two."

"As if I don't have a hard enough time not jumping you in public as it is. Now I wouldn't even get in real trouble for it."

Luckily for everyone involved, her self-control isn't actually that bad.

[personal profile] hyperkinesia 2016-05-16 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Bruce almost drops a piece of ravioli from his fork at that, grinning shyly as he shakes his head at her.

"That's not the kind of law-breaking I was talking about."
