What: Directly after this. Peter really screwed up and now he's hanging out in the medbay until he recovers. Later he hangs out in the hold. Wanda's around to feild all your questions about how stupid her twin is.

"Because I thought I had to." It's an asshole answer, skipping past the intent of the question. Honestly, he was just not sure how much to tell her. Even if he was aware that Wanda plans on talking about some of Peter and Rinzler's past problems during the program's trial, there was a part of him still irrationally terrified to confirm the relation. And everything about the current mess had boiled down to who Wanda was to him.

"It's not the first time we got into a fight, it's just the first time I tried to end it." He sighed, rubbing again at his eyes. "Would you accept if I said it was to protect someone?"

"Clearly," she says dryly. She did think better of Peter than assuming he goes around planning murders for no reason in particular.

The second part of it is closer to the truth, and it is closer to something she'll accept. "Was he an actual imminent threat to them before you initiated this fight, or were you just worried he would be?"

But then, Rinzler has gotten into trouble on the ship before. She doesn't think there's any system in place on board to do anything about that. She can understand why Peter would feel he had no alternative. The trial and sentencing, the legal ramifications of Peter's actions, or of Rinzler's, don't even register on her list of concerns because it's all so short-term as to seem useless. Death is usually short term here too, though. Regardless of whether Peter's plan worked, Rosethorn highly suspects it wouldn't have made any difference. It only antagonized someone already hostile.

"He's an threat to everyone, it's not just about being worried." Which pretty much answers her question. It was fear that drove him to do it, the constant need to keep an eye on his sister and the waiting for Rinzler to strike had wore at him until he couldn't take it anymore. Peter didn't have a wealth of patience in the best of times, but when it came to such a stressing situation he was ready to snap from the first day. It's nothing short of a miracle that Alice convinced him to wait as long as they did.

"He threatened her and after everything I've seen him do, that he's done to me? What was I supposed to think? What else was I supposed to do? Just sit around and wait for him to kill someone? I couldn't let that happen."

Rosethorn's patience is usually limited. She doesn't approve of the way Peter went about things, but since she can't offer an alternative, she isn't even going to address that yet.

"He threatened who?" Rosethorn latches onto the pronoun. Peter was clearly worried about someone in particular. It wasn't shipwide safety or justice that prompted this particular attack. "Did you think to warn her, or set up a more thorough plan for her safety than attempted murder? Even if it had worked, what do you think the first thing he'd do after being revived would be?"

"Someone important to me, that's all anyone needs to know." He stubs up, ready to defend that bitterly. He can't, and won't, put Wanda's name out there anymore than he has to. But he does offer a little explanation. "Last time I went around talking about her to people, that's how he found out. I'm not risking that again."

"She knew he'd made the threat. And this was the plan. People have died here before and not come back. This could have been the same." A way to neatly tie up all their problems. He;d been banking on it. "Besides, if he knew his ass could get kicked, why would he keep trying? And if he did, I would just keep going after him until it stuck."
