What: Directly after this. Peter really screwed up and now he's hanging out in the medbay until he recovers. Later he hangs out in the hold. Wanda's around to feild all your questions about how stupid her twin is.

[He watches Niko walk the room, not looking down or pretending to sleep. After what he’s heard, he thinks Niko has the best chance of understanding why Peter did something everyone else calls stupid, evil. There’s something good in doing evil for family.]

For a while, yeah.

[He’s pretty sure he’s going to be put to the cells again, this time longer for a night.

He flinches at the mention of J. He didn’t want her involved. He didn’t want anyone involved, but for it to have been J? It was worse than just having to face his failure. Worse than just having to tell Wanda what he’d withheld.]

I feel like I’m the one who’s supposed to be saying that.
[He takes a ragged breath, bites his lip. His voice comes out in a rush, words jumbled and guilty.] I didn’t know she’d be there. I didn’t think anyone else would be there. But she’s always working at the bar, I didn’t think- I didn’t mean for that to happen. I didn’t want her involved.

People don't really plan to lose someone they love.

[He knows. Wishes he didn't. Even with someone else at his side, the ache left by Kate's death will never ebb. Not fully.]

You wanted to protect one person you cared about. How can you expect to cost you another?

You want me to do anything for you, since you are stuck here?

[Niko's right, of course. But his guilt is stronger than his sense.]

I still feel like I should have done something. Should have known. If I'd only killed him when I had the chance, you know? If I'd just done it then she'd still be here.

[It's his fault for hesitating. For letting his heart get in front of his head. That's the most shameful part.]

There's nothing. Wanda, she's been here everyday. All day. Kind of taking care of everything. [Like he should have been taking care of her.] Thanks, though. For offering.

That's not true.

Shit happens. Sometimes... You think getting rid of someone will make you safe and it doesn't. I have gotten rid of plenty of people that fucked me over. Always there is something else that comes along to hurt me after. Like falling down an escalator going up.

But I understand what you did. And I could not blame you.

He shouldn't have killed her. I will not rob him of his credit.

It's got to end sometime though, right? Can't fall forever.

[It's an apt analogy at least, and Peter can almost find the humor in it. But mostly he's just glad to hear him say that he's not blaming Peter. He'd thought as much, but there's still relieve in knowing.]

What would you do? Seeing how this turned out, what happened. What would you do now? Time in a cell isn't going to change what he is. It doesn't take back what he did.

No. But maybe other people can change what he is.

I think he is an asshole, and someone who wronged you badly. If I was you, I would want the same thing. But saying that he cannot change? A few days in a cell won't do it, but now people are bearing down on him.

To survive at all, he must.

Though if he does, it won't bring her back. Is a steep price for some jack ass to learn a lesson. [Niko puts his hand on Peter's shoulder, letting it rest there.]

Maybe. If he's capable of learning that. Who knows, with his kind.

[There's logic to what Niko's saying. Peter takes a minute, a human one, to think about it. He's only heard bits and pieces about the ungoing trials, but he imagines J would have been well liked enough to make people pay attention to this. And at least it's opened people's eyes, shown them what Rinzler is capable of.

If Rinzler doesn't change, at least everyone else knows to be ready.]

Yeah. But can we not- [He feels childish in asking, but the reminder that she's dead, she can't be brought back, stabs at him.]- can we not talk about her?

[Instead of mentioning her again, Niko reaches over, claps his hand over Peter's, and gives it a rough friendly squeeze, one of those like he'd do to a tough guy friend who needed some strength rather than someone he considered a kid.]

If I find any junk food, I will make sure you get some, okay?

Or just anything you feel like you can eat right now. Sound like a deal?

[It's a nice gesture, an appreciated one.]

You don't have to do anything. [But it's not a heartfelt protest.] I won't argue with you though, it has to be better than what they bring me. And what I can't handle, well, Wanda barely ever leaves. I'm sure she could use it.
