This is pointless. I’m not sick. I’m not injured. I have no reason to be here.

[These are the words you may hear floating into the main room as the doors to the medbay slide open. Athena’s been escorted there, obviously not entirely by her own free will, though thankfully she doesn’t have to be sedated and physically dragged there like she did upon arrival. For one, this uniform offers even less protection from sedative-filled needles than her armor did, and secondly, she doesn’t have near the energy for the evasive maneuvers she would otherwise use to compensate for this. So she lets herself be led, albeit grudgingly.

She glares over her shoulder as the doors slide shut behind her and she’s left alone in the main room. She’ll also glare at any uniformed person who tries approaching her.]

I do not need treatment, [she says shortly. Her appearance, however, would beg to differ. Her skin is sallow, her face gaunt, and her uniform seems to hang a bit too loosely about her. Doesn’t stop her from looking at you as if she’s imagining twisting your head off like a bottle cap and, against all odds, like she could succeed.]

[If you enter the medbay at any time afterwards, you might find yourself being stared at very intently. For once, Athena’s intentions aren’t confrontational. She’s just bored. Oh my god, she is so bored. At least when bandits had taken her prisoner, they had provided her with interesting conversation every once and awhile. This “IV drip” is not nearly as diverting. The only reason she hasn’t ripped it out of her wrist and stormed off is because she’s been told if she stays on it for a day and then starts eating actual food, she’ll be able to leave the medbay and that is currently her top priority.

Feel free to talk to her. Or shoot at her. Or spontaneously combust. Honestly, she’s so bored she’d take anything at this point.]

[Staring intensifies. She's touched the Hulk's mind; this is nothing.]

You expect me to not care when you starve yourself into the hospital? [Or medbay or whatever this place is called.]

[Athena stares back wordlessly as if she’s been asked a trick question. When it becomes clear that Wanda is waiting for an answer, she speaks, albeit dubiously.]

Yes?

That is not how this works where I am from. I would care anyway, but we are supposed to be helping each other.

[Athena gaze is hard as she regards the woman, her expression inscrutable. After a moment, she looks away, frowning.]

Before I arrived on this ship, I was being held by bandits. I didn’t eat the food they gave me because it would have been against regs to accept food from my captors. Seeing as I was taken aboard the Moira against my will, I believed those regulations to still apply.

[Her eyes meet Wanda’s once again.]

Is that sufficient explanation?

[Wanda's expression softens, finally. She doesn't need to ask what kind of person would order that...she knows.]

Are those people worth your life?

Everyone I have met here is like us. They aren't here to hurt you. [This might be the start of a smile.] Some of us would like to help you.

No. They aren’t. [She knows that she doesn’t owe Atlas obedience; after everything they did to her, she doesn’t owe them anything at all, save maybe a few hundred or thousand violent deaths. But knowing that doesn’t make her training any easier to shake.] Their regulations served many purposes. Some were to keep us in line. Some were to keep us alive. It can be… difficult to figure out which is which.

[It’s not exactly an apology, but it’s the closest thing to an acknowledgement of wrongdoing that Wanda’s going to get.

Her next words get a quizzical look from Athena.] And what do they want in exchange?

It will get easier. [It's progress. She'll take it. Wanda has already caught flashes of Not Very Nice Things in Athena's mind. It's not terribly surprising that she's going to need some time to "recover."]

I don't want anything from you. The others... [She shrugs; who knows? Ask 10 people and you'll get 15 different answers. At least.] Why would they bring you here if they weren't worried?

[Athena’s only response is a nod of acknowledgment. She’s not exactly eager to let on exactly how much of her “strategy” for life outside Atlas is improvisation -- she doesn’t want to seem brainwashed like one of her sisters after all, nor does she want to reveal a potential weakness.

Wanda’s next words actually get a smirk out of the assassin.] You’d be the first. [And then the smirk is gone just as quickly as it had come.] Worrying about someone and wanting something from them aren’t mutually exclusive categories. You can worry about any type of investment.

People aren't things. Not to me. [And even for her enemies there have always been some lines Wanda won't cross, certain pains she won't inflict unless she has to.

She lets out a sigh. Whatever is she going to do with you, Athena?]

Do you want me to get you anything? You must be bored in here.

[She shrugs.] That’s just how it works where I’m from. [Everything and everyone has their price. Coming from a galaxy where corporations write the laws and rule the planets, this notion isn’t all that shocking to Athena.

She's caught off-guard by Wanda's next question.] I… don’t know. [She isn’t used to being confined to a bed and she doesn’t have much in ways of hobbies -- when she wasn’t killing things at Atlas, she was training to kill things, which isn’t really something she can do now.

There's a pause as she considers her options and then:] Do you have any suggestions?

[Hmmmm.] There is a library if you like to read. I could bring you something.

[Somehow she doubts Athena is the book type, but it's worth offering. Leisure activities here are somewhat limited compared to Earth options. It's not there's Netflix or anything.

There is one other thing, though. Wanda holds up a wrist to show the knotted bracelet she's wearing.]

I could also show you how to make these. They are good for clearing you head.

[Athena clearly isn’t certain about the library idea.] I... don’t think I would know what book to ask for. [She isn’t even sure what genre she’d ask for, to be honest.

She seems a bit more receptive to Wanda’s next suggestion. The bracelet looks simple enough and at least it will give her something to focus on.]
