move & lull
"Sometimes, the thing that brings us together also pulls us apart. "

The beginning of the month was a whirlwind of confusion—for both seasoned and new members of the crew. Link’d Inc’s unsavory methods for obtaining information were revealed, the company’s front runner was murdered and planted on the ship, and with the help of Benjamin Link, the crew was able to free the kidnapped children and unlock the ship so that the Moira could get as far away as possible. It was a mess, but after the refugees were taken to a nearby by planet to start over, things have finally begun to settle down. The ship also has more crew than it’s ever had, and that can only mean one thing: more work. An unfortunate side effect of having so many bodies in one place, everyone is being asked to contribute; the captains implore everyone to chip in and do their share. Clean up after yourselves, don’t miss your shifts, and give fellow crew members a hand with their tasks if they can’t get them done on time.
☄ SPACEWALK ( 02.16 - 02.23 )
Eventually, Manasseh comes to the crew with a training opportunity. The captains are well aware that not everyone on board have learned essential skills for surviving and working in space. To remedy that, she has offered to take a week to train groups in the skill of performing space walks on the hull. Those who already have experience are welcomed as assistant instructors. Those willing will learn how to safely don a spacesuit and secure oxygen lines and tethers—for both themselves and others. All skills that will come in handy in case there is a need for emergency repairs, or if the crew encounters a low-atmosphere environment they wish to explore. Mysteriously, there is also a promise of something interesting on the horizon for those willing to learn.
☄ TREATS N' SWEETS ( 02.16 - EVENING )
As a way of extending an olive branch to the crew, the captains have cleared out the kitchen and mess hall early in the afternoon. Later that evening, the crew is asked to come down - via their MIDs - as the captains have a surprise for them. The tables are lined with finger foods, sandwiches, pretzels and chips, but the table in the very back is where the captains are lingering. They’ve made desserts for the crew, but they aren’t just any typical sweet concoction. They are each unique, and there are small, hand-written signs in front of each:

JUST RELAX: Mint chocolate chip ice cream scooped out into bowls and is the most sweet of the three. The first bite does little to the person eating it, but each subsequent taste results in an increasingly relaxed state. The more that is consumed, the more mellow the person becomes.
BE HONEST: A delicate concoction of science and the culinary arts, this dessert is refreshing and semi-sweet. The fruity flavors burst in your mouth, loosening your tongue, and result in a brief period of honesty. The reactions vary from person to person—anywhere from being more blunt than normal to answering any question that is asked without a filter. The effects wear off after an hour.
YOU'RE SWEET: A selection of small chocolate cheesecakes offer something rich and decadent to enjoy. Each one brings something a little different in terms of flavor, the taste lingering for some time after you’re done. Some make you feel indulgent, some make you feel romantic; this makes you feel both. Those that sample this dessert will feel lighter, happier, and more likely to indulge in romantic endeavors. The effects last for only one night, dissipating after a good night’s sleep. Those that do not require sleep will suffer the effects for two days.
☄ LANTERNS IN THE BLACK ( 02.23 )
The day starts out differently than most. The captains send a message saying that everyone has been granted light duty for the day, and once they finish their necessary chores, they are given the remainder of it to themselves. Around midday, an announcement will be made. The pilgrim fleet of Librae Prime will be performing their yearly Celebration of Life. They are on their way to a system decades away, and each year, they celebrate the lives gained and lost within their ranks by releasing a multitude of brightly colored lanterns out into space. The Pilgrims make a habit of inviting ships within range to participate as it is a joyful event for them.

The entire crew is welcome to watch from the observation deck, the lights dimmed so the view can be properly appreciated, but those members of the crew who have participated in the space walk lessons or have previous experience have a special opportunity all their own. Manasseh invites them to the airlock with a supply of flying lanterns and an offer to put their new-found skills to use by releasing the Moira’s own lanterns. The morning after the flight of the lanterns a special surprise will await everyone in their mailboxes. A small lantern sits waiting for each member of the crew. It casts a soft light comparable to a simple nightlight and will hover in a stationary position when activated.

hyperkinesia: (How's he doing?)

[personal profile] hyperkinesia 2016-02-20 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
He can manage that much, he thinks. He's good at bottling up his feelings, after all, burying them deep within him, and while his experience is mostly with feelings of the bad kind, the whole process can't be all that different with good ones, can it?

(If he thought it through properly, he'd realize it's not that easy. He did it with Betty, sure, but distancing himself physically helped a lot too - and even despite everything having managed, he's wearing her necklace even now. Although he can always argue that what he felt for Betty once was much stronger, something much more difficult to let go and move past, something that would of course leave a more lasting mark - while this is barely the beginnings of a crush.)

"Is it? I must be out of practice, then."

Said jokingly. He does contain his emotions a lot, and hide certain feelings behind others, but he knows that for the most part, he's never had to do that around Trish before. That's likely to change now, though.

"Don't worry, you're still mostly a mystery to me."

His face is easy to read, yes, but that doesn't mean there is always something to read, apart from the sadness that seems to cling to him too much of the time.

Not that she can blame him. He's got so many heavy burdens to bear, and he seems to be trying to do it alone. She can sort of related to that, in a way. Needing to handle your shit on your own.

She's just not very good at letting the people she cares about do that.
hyperkinesia: (How's he doing?)

[personal profile] hyperkinesia 2016-02-23 11:11 am (UTC)(link)
"I wouldn't want that, either."

The answer comes before he even thinks twice on it, and the surprise shows in his face too. Still, he smiles softly, lips pressing into a thin line as he looks away for a moment. He gets reminded of the lanterns just then - it was almost as if he had completely forgotten about the ceremony, and the reason why they were out here in the first place - and he uses that as an excuse, admiring the display of the floating lights instead.

"They might go on forever."

Not sure if it's a nice sentiment, or just depressing. Maybe somewhere between the two.
notpatsy: (really?)

[personal profile] notpatsy 2016-02-24 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't even want to try to think about what the probability is that they just keep going without ever crashing into anything."

The numbers would be too painfully huge. Not to mention the fact that the thought of the lanterns just sailing on forever and ever itself is also far too vast for any human mind to truly be able to grasp it. The human brain was never meant to handle infinity, she would definitely agree with Bruce on that.

hyperkinesia: (What does he want me to do?)

[personal profile] hyperkinesia 2016-02-24 10:34 am (UTC)(link)
"It's probably for the best that you don't. That would be a headache to last you a lifetime."

And he's speaking of literal numbers here, actual equations to figure it out - and that would still be a guess, an estimate based on what of this universe is known to them. They could never know for sure.

But that's nice. Some things are best not being known or completely understood. Much of life is a mystery, after all, and though Bruce enjoys unravelling some of those mysteries, sometimes it's nice to just sit there watch in wonder and amazement, let the universe marvel him.
notpatsy: (huh?)

[personal profile] notpatsy 2016-03-01 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
"You look kind of pleased with that."

Trish wrinkles her nose, not sure how she feels about it herself. Sure, rationally speaking she knows that no one can know everything. It's just not possible.

But then there is that inner control freak who still likes to give it a try.
hyperkinesia: (It's not you I don't trust.)

[personal profile] hyperkinesia 2016-03-01 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
"And I am."

He's smiling again, when he looks at her, particularly amused at the expression she pulls. Not that it surprises him much - Trish seems like the kind of person who, given the chance, would want to know everything about everything, even if that might overwhelm her more than she could possibly imagine.

"Everything is a mystery. Life, the universe... if I knew everything there is to know, there'd be no point to life. It's good, not knowing something, or not understanding it even though you know it exists. Sometimes it's just about feeling things, instead of having to pick them apart, and--" He pauses, shaking his head a little. "I don't know. I like the wonder. I like the thought of some things just... sweeping me off my feet. Don't you?"
notpatsy: (really?)

[personal profile] notpatsy 2016-03-01 10:29 am (UTC)(link)
If you know everything, you can control the situation, and Trish is all about that. Not always on a conscious level, but it's certainly always ticking away in the back of her head. Stay in control, make sure you can't get hurt.

And yet there is always that other side of her too. The one that recklessly throws itself out there, puts itself in danger for people she cares about.

The side of her that craves connection.

Love.

"Getting swept off your feet sounds a lot like falling on your ass."

She does get his point, really. She can appreciate the beauty in great mysteries, the poetry of the picture he paints with his words.

She's just being contrary because she enjoys bickering with him.
hyperkinesia: (He really grows on you doesn't he?)

[personal profile] hyperkinesia 2016-03-01 10:34 am (UTC)(link)
He can't help huffing at her answer, the sound turning to a chuckle as he grins and shakes his head, eyes rolling a little.

"A guy says something poetic and you just have to ruin it like that, don't you?"

Not that she's wrong, but she's being a lot more literal than he was. Still, if literal is where she's going...

"We're not falling on our asses now."

He waves his legs around, a motion slowed when floating in outer space, meaning to convey that they're very much off their feet right now.
notpatsy: (for real?)

[personal profile] notpatsy 2016-03-01 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
Trish smiles too, glad that she's somehow managed to get the warmth back into his smile by being a little shit. Jessica would be proud.

Okay no, Jessica would probably be making gagging noises about her hanging around in space being cutesy with some guy but whatever.

"That's just because there's nowhere to land, which isn't very reassuring."
hyperkinesia: (I'm exposed.)

[personal profile] hyperkinesia 2016-03-01 10:55 am (UTC)(link)
Some guy? Wow, excuse you, Jessica.

"Look on the bright side: if there's nowhere to land, then you can't fall."

He arches his eyebrows, shooting her a cheeky little smile as he lifts his shoulders.

"But we can always go back inside, if you want. That way you can fall on your ass and fully enjoy the effects of a stabilized gravity field."
notpatsy: (beautiful lean)

[personal profile] notpatsy 2016-03-01 11:00 am (UTC)(link)
"And you won't even try to catch me? Wow, what a brat."

Okay he really is being alarmingly cute right now. Not that she wasn't always aware of the fact that Bruce is an adorable dork, but well... she's kind of even more aware now.

Might have something to do with the way he looked at her for just that brief moment. Sometimes subtle things can shift how you see the whole world.
hyperkinesia: (Only when I've created a murder bot.)

[personal profile] hyperkinesia 2016-03-01 11:04 am (UTC)(link)
His smile turns to an amused grin, lips pursing as he tilts his head just so, in a mimicry of a resigned expression.

"Well, I guess I could try."

Delivered in a way that's almost as if he just said 'if I must...'.
notpatsy: (for real?)

[personal profile] notpatsy 2016-03-01 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
"Wow, I didn't realise I was such a burden."

Man, just sort of hanging freely in space makes it hard to adopt a sassy posture. She has to settle for just giving him a very sassy look.
hyperkinesia: (He really grows on you doesn't he?)

[personal profile] hyperkinesia 2016-03-01 11:34 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, there you have it."

The sass is plenty noticeable in her voice and expression anyway, though it only amuses Bruce.

"I'm just kidding. You're not a burden, I promise. I mean, I still wouldn't advise you to fall on me, but..."
notpatsy: (for real?)

[personal profile] notpatsy 2016-03-01 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
"But...?"

Come on, you can't just leave her hanging like that!
hyperkinesia: (How's he doing?)

[personal profile] hyperkinesia 2016-03-01 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
"But I would catch you."

It was kind of implied there, alright.
notpatsy: (hint of a smile)

[personal profile] notpatsy 2016-03-01 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but she wanted to hear it.

"I guess that might be worth the risk of falling."

They are totally still being literal here, right?

Right.
hyperkinesia: (It's a nightmare.)

[personal profile] hyperkinesia 2016-03-01 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
God, he honestly hopes she's still being literal. Otherwise he doesn't know what to do with that.

"Hopefully you never will."

There, that also works in a less than literal way.
notpatsy: (arguing)

[personal profile] notpatsy 2016-03-01 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Well he could hug her and kiss her and give this whole being in a relationship thing a try. Just as a suggestion.

Not that Trish is actually thinking that far, she just sort of managed to give herself a nervous, fluttery feeling in the pit of her stomach when she said that.

Crap, is she discovering a crush whilst hanging in open space? Is this really what's happening?

Well. The signs were there she supposes. The dancing, the walks, the talks, the flirty banter. The space hand holding.

Wow, okay those are a lot of signs. But it just didn't really add up to... well, what it is, until this moment. Because Bruce is her friend. And they are trapped in a murderbox in outer space! And the timing is just terrible.

Okay, don't freak out. Don't freak out. He's got pretty eyes but don't freak out.

"I tend to land on my feet."
hyperkinesia: (We shouldn't be focusing on Loki.)

[personal profile] hyperkinesia 2016-03-01 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's good to know."

Bruce smiles, entirely unaware of what's going through her head right at this moment. Which might just be for the best, all things considered. It's enough that he's just come to realize these feelings in himself, he's better off remaining in blissful ignorance about hers.

"Maybe you were a cat in a past life."

Not that he believes in that kind of thing, but anyway.
notpatsy: (hint of a smile)

[personal profile] notpatsy 2016-03-01 12:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"Maybe."

She somehow manages to smile at him even though she feels like a whole grapefruit just lodged itself in her throat.

Whoever invented feelings needs to get slapped.

"Wonder what you were."
hyperkinesia: (I think that was meant for you.)

[personal profile] hyperkinesia 2016-03-01 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, now she gets what kinds of feelings he's dealing with right now, though he's been managing to suppress them more or less alright so far. Whether it'll stay like that once they step back into the ship, that's something that remains to be seen.

"I never really thought about that." He shrugs. "A dog? I like dogs."
notpatsy: (beautiful lean)

[personal profile] notpatsy 2016-03-01 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Once they step back into the ship things will get so much worse, Trish already knows. At least out here they are inevitably separated by the vacuum of space and their suits.

Inside there will be so many opportunities to be close. To touch.

So much temptation to resist.

"One of those more standoffish breeds."
hyperkinesia: (How's he doing?)

[personal profile] hyperkinesia 2016-03-01 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Bruce isn't thinking quite that far ahead yet. It's one of those things he doesn't notice until it's right there, staring him in the face - possibly staring him a few inches too close to his face.

Yet another reason why it'd just be better to stay out here, endlessly floating in space.

"Breeds? I think you mean a mutt."
