move & lull
"Sometimes, the thing that brings us together also pulls us apart. "

The beginning of the month was a whirlwind of confusion—for both seasoned and new members of the crew. Link’d Inc’s unsavory methods for obtaining information were revealed, the company’s front runner was murdered and planted on the ship, and with the help of Benjamin Link, the crew was able to free the kidnapped children and unlock the ship so that the Moira could get as far away as possible. It was a mess, but after the refugees were taken to a nearby by planet to start over, things have finally begun to settle down. The ship also has more crew than it’s ever had, and that can only mean one thing: more work. An unfortunate side effect of having so many bodies in one place, everyone is being asked to contribute; the captains implore everyone to chip in and do their share. Clean up after yourselves, don’t miss your shifts, and give fellow crew members a hand with their tasks if they can’t get them done on time.
☄ SPACEWALK ( 02.16 - 02.23 )
Eventually, Manasseh comes to the crew with a training opportunity. The captains are well aware that not everyone on board have learned essential skills for surviving and working in space. To remedy that, she has offered to take a week to train groups in the skill of performing space walks on the hull. Those who already have experience are welcomed as assistant instructors. Those willing will learn how to safely don a spacesuit and secure oxygen lines and tethers—for both themselves and others. All skills that will come in handy in case there is a need for emergency repairs, or if the crew encounters a low-atmosphere environment they wish to explore. Mysteriously, there is also a promise of something interesting on the horizon for those willing to learn.
☄ TREATS N' SWEETS ( 02.16 - EVENING )
As a way of extending an olive branch to the crew, the captains have cleared out the kitchen and mess hall early in the afternoon. Later that evening, the crew is asked to come down - via their MIDs - as the captains have a surprise for them. The tables are lined with finger foods, sandwiches, pretzels and chips, but the table in the very back is where the captains are lingering. They’ve made desserts for the crew, but they aren’t just any typical sweet concoction. They are each unique, and there are small, hand-written signs in front of each:

JUST RELAX: Mint chocolate chip ice cream scooped out into bowls and is the most sweet of the three. The first bite does little to the person eating it, but each subsequent taste results in an increasingly relaxed state. The more that is consumed, the more mellow the person becomes.
BE HONEST: A delicate concoction of science and the culinary arts, this dessert is refreshing and semi-sweet. The fruity flavors burst in your mouth, loosening your tongue, and result in a brief period of honesty. The reactions vary from person to person—anywhere from being more blunt than normal to answering any question that is asked without a filter. The effects wear off after an hour.
YOU'RE SWEET: A selection of small chocolate cheesecakes offer something rich and decadent to enjoy. Each one brings something a little different in terms of flavor, the taste lingering for some time after you’re done. Some make you feel indulgent, some make you feel romantic; this makes you feel both. Those that sample this dessert will feel lighter, happier, and more likely to indulge in romantic endeavors. The effects last for only one night, dissipating after a good night’s sleep. Those that do not require sleep will suffer the effects for two days.
☄ LANTERNS IN THE BLACK ( 02.23 )
The day starts out differently than most. The captains send a message saying that everyone has been granted light duty for the day, and once they finish their necessary chores, they are given the remainder of it to themselves. Around midday, an announcement will be made. The pilgrim fleet of Librae Prime will be performing their yearly Celebration of Life. They are on their way to a system decades away, and each year, they celebrate the lives gained and lost within their ranks by releasing a multitude of brightly colored lanterns out into space. The Pilgrims make a habit of inviting ships within range to participate as it is a joyful event for them.

The entire crew is welcome to watch from the observation deck, the lights dimmed so the view can be properly appreciated, but those members of the crew who have participated in the space walk lessons or have previous experience have a special opportunity all their own. Manasseh invites them to the airlock with a supply of flying lanterns and an offer to put their new-found skills to use by releasing the Moira’s own lanterns. The morning after the flight of the lanterns a special surprise will await everyone in their mailboxes. A small lantern sits waiting for each member of the crew. It casts a soft light comparable to a simple nightlight and will hover in a stationary position when activated.

That's perfectly okay! Perhaps we'll think of a way to use my magic in conjunction with your arrows!

[Probably not, unless you want to watch him fire bones at things. But he thinks it's a great idea.

He picks up a bow and inspects it, twanging the string. He's seen these before, but never in person, and human devices were always so interesting.
]
songoftime: (surprise ∆ what's over there?)

[personal profile] songoftime 2016-02-18 09:24 am (UTC)(link)
We probably can. [Link thinks so, anyway. If the Great Fairy could teach him how to use magic when he didn't even know it was in him, he's sure they can figure something out.

But first, the basics. ... although, it's occurring to him now that no one taught him how to use a bow, either. He just kind of... did it. Trial and error taught him the more complicated things, but he felt like he always kind of knew how to use the bow. It was the same way with a lot of the weapons he knows how to use, actually. That's probably some kind of magic, too. It might even have something to do with the Triforce, for all he knows.]

It's... mostly simple, to start with. [Link shifts so he's standing next to the Stalfos.] But it takes practice. Um... Try drawing the string back. No arrows yet. [He demonstrates, drawing back on the Hero's Bow to show the proper form.]

[personal profile] coolskeletonnyehntyfive 2016-02-20 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Like this?

[Papyrus studies Link's stance, his movements, and does his best to imitate them. He already feels kind of cool, just standing here with fingers curled around the string, bending the bow's frame just slightly.]

Oh! It won't break if I pull too hard, will it??

[He's a bit concerned about breaking your things.]
songoftime: (default ∆ yeah?)

[personal profile] songoftime 2016-02-23 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It could, [Link admits.] But just the string. The bow is really bendy. You'd have to be really strong to break that. I know how to fix strings, so it's okay.

[It's not Link's bow, anyway. He'd probably feel a little bad if it was broken-broken, but... At least it isn't irreplaceable.

He looks over the Stalfos' form for a moment, then nods.]
That's good.

[There are a lot of little things that matter about this that Link isn't thinking about, though, because he hasn't taught someone how to do this before. Things like how he's left-handed, and that affects one's pose; things like what he does with his feet when he's shooting, because it comes naturally to him. So... this'll be a learning experience for everybody.

But, for now, Link is easing the string of the Hero's Bow back to its natural position. He walks back over to the equipment box and picks up an arrow to bring over to the Stalfos. He hands it up to him.]
I'll show you how to hold the arrow, next.

[He draws one of his own arrows out next, staying where he's standing next to Papyrus so he can show him the position of his fingers.] You see the arrow that's colored different? It's gotta point this way, away from you, so it sticks out. And then you hold it like this. [He nocks the arrow and tilts his arms so he's holding the bow a bit awkwardly, but so that it's easier for Papyrus to see the way his fingers are curled, his pinkie not touching the bow.]
coolskeletonnyehntyfive: (pic#10034667)

hell yes two snaps for left-handed Link

[personal profile] coolskeletonnyehntyfive 2016-02-24 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
[Papyrus is extremely pleased -- his first lesson, and he's already receiving praise for doing well! It's only natural that one as great as he should be great at this too, of course, but he's practically glowing.

He takes the arrow and examines it, then takes a good look at what Link is doing and tries his best to imitate it, right down to the somewhat awkward bow-holding. It's not perfect form, but the kid's a good teacher, and he's already starting to get the hang of it.
]

Neato! And what a fabulous moment of monster-human diplomacy! Together we shall be unstoppable, the great Papyrus, and...

What's your name?
songoftime: (surprise ∆ what's this?)

oh dangit i meant "see the FEATHER that's colored different" up above

[personal profile] songoftime 2016-02-24 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
[Once Papyrus has the position of his fingers down, Link straightens his arms back to a proper position.]

Link. [Monster-human diplomacy... There's something about that phrasing. He can't quite put his finger on it at the moment, so he sets it aside for now to focus on the present.

After a second, he glances up at Papyrus.]
I'm not a human, though.
coolskeletonnyehntyfive: ([papyrus] 07)

it's okay, I knew what you meant!

[personal profile] coolskeletonnyehntyfive 2016-02-24 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Nice to meet you!

[Continuing to imitate Link, Papyrus also straightens his arms. Is he aiming correctly? He feels like he is. He's comfortable with ranged attacks, but he's always fought with bones before. He's not entirely sure this arrow is going to obey him, or that he could take it back if his opponent needed him to.

That last remark gets a doubletake of surprise from him.
]

Wait, really? You aren't human?? But you look just like all the humans I've met!
songoftime: (talking ∆ really?)

[personal profile] songoftime 2016-02-24 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Humans have short ears. [Link would point at one of his own, but his hands are occupied, so he can't.] I'm a Hylian. We have long ears so we can hear the gods.

[... or so he was told. Link hasn't ever heard any of the gods himself, though. The Goddess of Time has made it clear that she's helping him, but she's never spoken to him.

...

Can the gods of Hyrule even reach him now, where he is? Now, there's a new depressing thought.]
coolskeletonnyehntyfive: ([papyrus] 12)

[personal profile] coolskeletonnyehntyfive 2016-02-24 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Wowie, that's amazing! I've never heard a god before, but maybe it's because I don't have ears at all!

[Yes, that must be the reason.

They stand side by side, arrows at the ready, but Papyrus has been thoroughly distracted from what they're supposed to be doing.
]

What kind of things do they say?
songoftime: (default ∆ no sitting still)

[personal profile] songoftime 2016-02-24 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know, [Link admits.] They've never spoken to me, either. But the Goddess of Time has helped me before.

[And that is something he doesn't want to explain. So, he'll change topics now.]

So... Once you've got the arrow nocked, you can pull it the bow back again. And then you aim. [There's a little more to it than that. Posture is important, and the positioning of your feet. Link draws the Hero's Bow back, luckily demonstrating it all even though he isn't thinking to explain it. He squints one eye to make sure he's lined up with the target.]
coolskeletonnyehntyfive: (pic#9928013)

[personal profile] coolskeletonnyehntyfive 2016-02-24 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[Papyrus twigs that there's something there, something bothering Link, but he doesn't press just yet. Sometimes all people needed was to not think about the things that bothered them, the things that hurt or were out of their control. He of all people understood the need to do something else.

Still, he made a mental note to ask about it sometime.
]

Oh, right! And now we're ready to let it go?

[He's still doing a passing imitation of what Link's showing him, including the stance and closing one eye. This isn't awfully different from aiming a bone attack. These targets aren't even moving, and even with an unfamiliar weapon in hand, he feels like he has the right idea.]
songoftime: (action ∆ aiming)

[personal profile] songoftime 2016-02-24 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. [And so Link does. He releases the arrow and it whizzes through the air, hitting the box with a thud. He didn't aim for the center target again, like he had with the Light Arrow. This isn't the same target as the one he'd used for that example, and he didn't want to take up a useful spot.

Hey, for all he knows, Papyrus is going to be a dead shot. There's no way for him to tell, and he, of all people, knows not to judge someone by the way they look or their lack of experience with something.]
coolskeletonnyehntyfive: ([papyrus] 41)

[personal profile] coolskeletonnyehntyfive 2016-02-25 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
[While acceptable, Papyrus is decidedly not going to be a dead shot. He releases the arrow, and it thuds into the outer edge of the target.]

Oh! Did you see that, hu-- Link? I hit it!

[He trots over to inspect the damage before pulling the arrow back out and waving it around excitedly.]

It really went in deep, too! Another stunning victory for the great Papyrus!
songoftime: (smile ∆ let me explain)

[personal profile] songoftime 2016-02-27 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
[Papyrus is so excited that Link can't help but smile. It isn't a perfect shot, but perfect isn't the point here.]

That's good, [Link agrees. He's approaching the target, too, so he can retrieve his own arrow.] You hit the target on your first try. That means you know the basics. We can practice on aiming now. The fancy stuff comes after that.

[It... feels really good, to teach someone something. Seeing them excited to learn something new. Link is suddenly... glad that this is his job. Yeah. He's happy. That's what this feeling is.]
coolskeletonnyehntyfive: (pic#9852976)

[personal profile] coolskeletonnyehntyfive 2016-02-27 10:19 am (UTC)(link)
There's fancy stuff?? Yes! I knew this was a fantastic idea!

[And you thought he was pleased before? He might look like a stalfos, but the personality doesn't match.

He hurries back, grinning even wider somehow.
]

What sort of fancy stuff do you do? Flips? More magic?
songoftime: (smile ∆ hehehehe)

[personal profile] songoftime 2016-03-02 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
[It's the truth, he acts more like... like... well. Link guesses he hasn't really met someone like Papyrus before. But he doesn't act like any Stalfos he's ever met.]

Moving targets, [Link supplies, because even though that isn't exactly fancy, more like normal, he figures Papyrus will still get a kick out of it.] And Fire Arrows and Ice Arrows. I don't have them any more, though. But there are other things we can do. Indirect shots. Shooting through narrow spaces. Stuff like that.
coolskeletonnyehntyfive: (pic#9852951)

[personal profile] coolskeletonnyehntyfive 2016-03-04 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
[Moving targets? Papyrus looks back at the targets, wondering if they've already been set up to move without help.]

All of that sounds highly impressive! You must have started archery very early to possess such skill!

Which one should we do first??
