[He does realize they're not going to be able to get it out of this guy now that they've said that, though.] Get the knife anyway. It'll come in handy. [He starts choking the guy himself, having to hold tight with that one arm in an awkward way, until he goes limp.]
If you're out here in this sort of situation, enter it willingly, you have to prepare yourself. You don't want to threaten him. But you don't want to run into other officers, either. Find out where the patrols are, and they can be detoured without encountering them. You go out, knowing you're going to be facing violent people, you are committing yourself to violence.
Get the idea? You don't have to kill them. You can always knock them out. Stun them. But they can't doubt it. Then you can dodge the rest.

( ivan mutters, shoving the knife in his pocket after watching the other man knock out the guard very effectively. )
Why are you doing this?
( he can't help but ask, since it tends to go above and beyond 'don't get the other guy killed.' )

You can do a lot more here, more than the reaches of basic military. And in this case, stealth and information will do us the most favors.
[And he hates to see potential go to waste.]
[He starts patting the guy down until he finds a communicator of some sort, plucks it out of the guy's ear, and rubs it off on his uniform before holding it against his own ear.]
They're still looking for him. Good sign.

( then he won't be middling anymore. he'll be good at something, he'll be noticeable. you've got a task ahead of you, miller, the moment he can get out of this. )
We get out of here now, right? Very far away from this?
( he gestures at the two bodies. please. please let them go away. )
I like how I managed to fuck up just one "you're" up there between two correct ones.
[He puts the earpiece in and starts moving, checking the map he made as he goes.]
Sounds like there is a long stretch with a lot of cover but potential to get cornered in. So we'll have to be careful.
i know this feeling and i also DID NOT NOTICE because i too am bad w/words
Any way we can direct the attention of guards nearby elsewhere with that?
( he says, jerking his head at the comm. get rid of people within easy responding zone, lessen their chance of getting cornered. which, to ivan, is the ideal. )

[Miller's voice is a special sort of exhausted gravelly, that sort that comes from having seen too much. Before, it was almost jovial. Pleasant. That infectious sort of enthusiasm. Now it's seeped out of him.]
[He hands off the earpiece.] Try on the most generic voice you can. Use the map to choose sectors. Detour them in a direction not towards us, and also not towards their target goal. Benjamin. Primary goal is still getting the ship out, more than keeping us safe.
[Might as well do some more training. Ivan can probably throw on something serious and soldierly with a voice like his.]

( ivan is about to say that he very much doesn't want to until he has the earpiece given to him. and even then he really doesn't want to. is it too late to back out? probably. well, if kaz is going to act like a kinder version of his superior officers, ivan can deal with that.
he can't completely shake his accent -- he's never really tried before, and miles always did have the unfair advantage of being around aunt cordelia since popping out of the replicator -- but he does achieve some measure of soldierly authority. even though he hates it.
he thinks it works. he hopes it works. )

[He keeps going, motioning for Ivan to follow. A pit Ivan's gotten himself into, for sure. Miller seems intent on dragging him through what he's turning into an impromptu preliminary training session.]
[But he's not a jackass. He knows the importance of morale.]
You're doing fine. Remember. In combat or stress situations, if you're half right, you're not wrong. You have something to build from and protect yourself with.
So far you're moving with your errors.

Yeah, yeah. ( it's not a dismissive mutter, just one that's a reminder, and ivan listens closely to it for the next few minutes until-- ) No, hang on, I think they've found something--
( shit. )
