Nope. I can cover for myself. Besides, who's going to miss a glorified janitor? [He's not going to skip out on bodyguard duties yet. He's not that interested in pissing off the captains.] I haven't really been doing that much anyway.
So they stuck you in teaching then?
no subject
No. Actually I'm the Chief Science Officer. I signed up as an instructor because I wanted to, that's all.

Dude, so like you're the Bones around here. Nice. He was the science guy, right? [They may have only gotten a few channels but that didn't mean he paid much attention to Star Trek.] What kind of science do they got you doing in space?
no subject
What-- oh, Star Trek. [ He smiles a little. Points for that reference. ] Actually Bones was the Chief Medical Officer, but he was a Science Officer too, yes. [ He purses his lips and shrugs, shaking his head dismissively. ] But it's close enough. Here, I mostly monitor energy and radiation readings and fluctuations, keep a look out for anything out of the ordinary. If anything pops up, we think of possible explanations, run a few tests and simulations as needed, and try to come up with solutions for any issues. It's pretty recent, though. Things should pick up once there are a few more people working there with me.

Yup. [He doesn't deserve the points. They only get so many shows back home.] So, like, you're looking for stuff out there? Trying to keep us from running into some radiation cloud and poisoning everyone. Or just inventing stuff. I'm not much of a science guy, I don't really get this stuff. Sounds real smart though.
no subject
More the former, yes. Basically just keeping an eye out and making sure we don't all accidentally die from radiation poisoning or get stuck in some time dilation field. Just examples, by the way. None of that has actually happened before. [ Not that he knows of, anyway. ]

Good to know. I'd be a little wary of hanging out on a ship with a history of mass crew death like that. Though it's not like we'd know, right? Maybe hat's why we're here in the first place. But, hey. Guess that's what we got you for. Please don't let us all die, big guy.
no subject
I'll give it my best. If something does pop up you'll know. [ He doesn't plan on keeping things secret, not if there are measures that might improve people's safety during a crisis. ]
no subject
Early warning. Cool. Not sure if it will do us much good unless this thing has the space version of life boats. But, we'll leave it in your, I'm assuming, capable hands.
no subject
A heavy burden, but I'll do my best. [ He knows he's good at what he does, though, so he'll do anything within his power to make sure the ship's safe. ] And if things ever get really bad, we always have the cryostasis units. [ Granted, not of much comfort, but it's better than dying, he thinks. ]

Well, at least this planet we left in one piece, so that's one silver lining. [ And they can't know how things will work out for Emiri from this point onwards, but they can hope it'll be better than it was before, at least. ]

So for now, he leaves it at that. Maybe some other day he'll tell Peter the whole thing, or he'll run into the information himself somehow. It's not that difficult to figure out, at this point. ]
Anyway, I'm... taking these back to the library. [ He reaches for the books on the table. ] You're sticking around here, I take it? I don't mind if you want to come along.
