Calm down a moment, please, you're not making any sense right now. [ She studies the girl intently. ] Are you new? One of the refugees or..?

[ Alice breathes out, at once seeming to sag. ]
Sorry — I'm the, well. I'm a teacher. One of the new ones. I've been trying to see what people are already reading. [ She finally looks Lara in the eyes. They're wary, but there's plain curiousity beneath it all. ] Checking the library records only does so much. Is this, ah —
[ Tentatively, as though she already expects the answer. ]
This is your room, isn't it.
no subject
You're a teacher who's sneaking into rooms to build a curriculum.
[ she clears her throat to stifle her laugh, but it threads it's way through her voice.]. Excuse me. Ah, yes, this is my room. The librarian's too, as it happens.

So I'm open to suggestion.
[ She moves to lift some of the books off Lara's bed. ]
But, um. Sorry about that. I have a feeling you guys are going to skew the data, anyway. [ She waggles an archaeology digest in Lara's direction; circa 1900, from a version of Great Britain that never developed democracy (and near as Alice can tell, is being ruled by eldritch horrors). ] Did you check all these out?
no subject
[ she does let herself laugh this time, stepping closer to the bed to look at the books Alice had found.]
Most of them, yes. I haven't been on the ship nearly long enough to collect much. Oh, don't bother with this one. [ She picks up a well worn journal, making a face.] Arrogant treasure hunters with terrible methodology.

[ Alice raises an eyebrow. ]
That's awesome. What cultures did you focus on? Not guaranteeing I'll know any of them, but.
Literally the hardest question ever.
[ She rocks on her heels a little.]
My focus was East Asian cultures, but... A little bit of everything, really. There's so much history that's not officially recorded, not easily accessible to those of us that aren't academically trained. So many things we don't know for sure about our own histories, legends and myths tangled up in fact. Truths hidden in legends.
[ She hesitates, mid gesture, then lets her hands drop, a little sheepish and shy now.] So... I guess my focus is. Everything.
i live to make people scour canon details
Honestly? Specializing's overrated. [ Alice pushes some books on the bed aside, and flops down, her intrusion apparently forgotten. Look, it's been ages since she got to talk to someone remotely academic. It's fucking Christmas. ] You weren't formally-trained, though? How'd you break into the field?
[ Alice shakes her head, and clears a second space. ]
I swear I'm already losing my mind over the truths on board here. Pretty sure my textbooks never mentioned the Norse pantheon as, you know, existing.

I did graduate from University, but not with an advanced degree. My father was an archaeologist, I grew up around dig sites and museums. I suppose you could say I inherited a number of his contacts. [ And perhaps his reputation as well. Crazy Croft's daughter... ]
It's disorienting. I was very much a skeptic until recently and now... [ She shrugs. ] For what it's worth, Loki is a surprisingly good cook. Less cold pickled meat than one would expect from a Nordic god.

Have you thought of doing any research here? I mean, with like. So many different places and times. I don't know how you'd begin that either, but — [ A shrug. ] — It'd be cool if there was an archive or something. Like, Mr. Pink was here.
no subject
[ Alice's question gets a slight shrug of her own. ] That's the trouble of it, actually. There's so much that happened before I got here and so much that happened after. I got a bit of information on the planet we were just on, but I haven't much context for it.
It is a thought, though. Perhaps I just need to find the proper way to go about it.
no subject
Well. We all had to sign those contracts. There's probably a record of those — just, no guaranteeing we'd be allowed to look at it. But there's probably no harm in asking.
[ At least when it's not her that has to. ]
Right now it seems like enough work to keep up with everything. You haven't been here that long, then?
no subject
[ And even still, what was the benefit of noting every planet? Except that whatever had happened on one of the previous planets visited had a lasting effect on the crew.. ]
Not very. A month or so at this point, I think.
no subject
Like. This whole teaching thing. [ Her fingers twinge. ] But either way, I think a record would be good to have. At least that way we can tell if we're going in circles around the galaxy.
no subject
[ Lara hums thoughtfully. ] Well... I suppose the job is what you want. I don't know how seriously everyone takes their positions. But I do agree. At the very least, what we're doing, what we're seeing... It'll all be history to someone.
no subject
Let's just hope it's got a happy ending. I should probably let you get back to it. [ She shifts to stand, reaching for one of the books: Victorians and Egypt, all talked-up adventure and cultural plundering. ] Do you mind if I borrow this, though? I could do with some blatant fiction.
no subject
She makes a face at the book Alice is holding.]
Provided you don't mind irritated annotations, please by all means.
It was good to meet you.
