"But-- but--" Oh jeeze, this is just terrible. Yata seems to have lost his voice for a moment before he finally blurts out, "Guys and girls aren't supposed to room together!" Damnit, first he gets kidnapped, then they lose his stuff, and then they give him messed up rooming assignments? What the hell?!
no subject
"Relax, it's not as if we bite." Much. "Change your clothes in the bathroom and there's nothing to worry about. And stay on your own side of the room at night. It sometimes snows on the other side."
no subject
Her reassurances don't do anything to reassure him, either - but that last comment of hers has the advantage of distracting him. His aggravation fades, melting into bafflement instead.
"It snows? How?"
no subject
"I'll make sure any ice stays confined to Elsa's part of the room."
no subject
"Fine, whatever." The egg-shaped beds aren't exactly idea for throwing himself down onto sulkily, so Yata settles for leaning against the shell of his instead. This whole room is so odd... "She's not gonna get pissed if I melt any snow that ends up on my side or anything like that, will she?"
no subject
"Melt it?" Rosethorn asks shrewdly. "In the way snow ordinarily melts when you leave it indoors in a space too warm for it, or did you have something more immediate in mind?"
no subject
"Like that." He lets his hand fall and the fire puffs right back out. "I don't wanna freeze just cause she can't control her magic." But he also knows from experience that fire users and ice users aren't exactly pals. He half expects a fight to break out the first time their powers butt up against each other.
no subject
"You're not going to freeze," Rosethorn informs him tartly. "That's what the wards are for. Do you have the self control to keep your own magic to yourself, or should I set up wards to keep your power on your own side of the room too?"
It seems more and more sensible not to keep plants in her room, even if she could get her hands on some of the sort of lights that keep them alive in the garden. Two people affecting the temperature.
no subject
"My power's not that work, or that strong. I can control it just fine." The only people he knows of that lose control of their skills like their are either total novices or devastatingly strong.
It, rater belatedly, is enough to make him finally wonder about his second roommate.
"So... what's this Elsa chick like, anyway?"
no subject
She isn't especially worried. Discipline Cottage was the same, a lot of the time, and the only advantages she had there as opposed to on the Moira were Lark's help and better knowledge of the way magic works. Her children proved that knowledge wrong often enough anyway.
"She's quiet, polite, tries very hard not to make trouble or endanger anyone. She just never learned how to handle her power at all until very recently. There was no one to teach her."
no subject
The description of Elsa is a little surprising, admittedly. Yata was someone expecting someone that sounded a bit more dangerous and in control of herself and less like an anxious wreck. Takes all kinds, he supposes.
"Right. Well..." Yata shrugs. "I'll stay out of her way, in that case."
no subject
"Is magic commonplace where you come from, then? There several kinds of it on my planet, but I gather it's a lot rarer than I'd think elsewhere."
no subject
"Seems like pretty hypocritical advice..."
Still, he's asking him a question and he's only too happy to answer. Especially if it means talking about HOMRA.
"Not really. Some people are just born with it or develop it randomly, but most people have to get it from a King, like I did." He pauses before he decides to add: "The people that get it at random can have pretty much any kind. The kind that comes from Kings is usually stronger, but you can only get certain stuff like fire or being able to walk through walls."
no subject
She doesn't even bother getting angry with Yata for that, snorting in amusement and offering him a grin. "I never said you had to be nice to me, boy. Only Elsa. She won't do anything to deserve another sort of treatment."
She appreciates all the sights and learning when she travels, that being her whole motivation to do so with Briar before she was whisked away to the Moira and farther from home than she ever intended to go. Completely foreign plants or magic are especially fascinating, though. "Magic is very different on your planet than mine. I gather there's something more to your kings than just the usual political monarchy?"
no subject
"Something, yeah." Part of his vagueness is intentional, but in truth he hasn't paid much attention. Worrying about the finer details of the Dresden Slates, the source of their powers, is for Kings themselves, as far as he's concerned. "But aside from the Gold King none of them are royalty or politicians or anything like that. I mean, the last Red King was just a normal guy right out of high school when he got his powers." Though despite that, Yata still sounds pretty respectful (and a little wistful) when he talks about said King.
