[He stays focused on the drawers, his eyebrows drawing together. He could've sworn he remembered which he had put them in, where...?]
The... the mushi cigarettes, I need to make sure they don't-- [He stops, horrified realization sinking in.] --they're gone. Th... the cigarettes are gone, I can't... I can't keep them away.

That’s what you’re worried about? [She shakes her head.] If you need a smoke that bad, you can see if they sell them at the next planet we get to. [She gestures for him to follow her.] Come on, if you don't have them, you don't have them. Let's get you to the medbay.

But if I'm here for too long, they'll... everyone will get sick again.
no subject
Tell me what’s wrong. [Her voice is insistent, but gentle.] What’s going to make everyone sick?
no subject
...The mushi. I attract them. If I stay here too long, they'll... they're going to be everywhere.

[He runs a thumb idly back and forth over the wooden edge of the box, frowning in thought as he talks half to himself.] Suguro showed me how to make them, so I could stay longer and wouldn't be sick all the time, but... I don't know if I can get all that I need here.

Well, if you wanted a place to start looking, the medbay’s your best bet. When we get there, ask to speak with Doc Yewll -- she’s the expert on this sort of thing. [She holds her hand out to him.]
You ready to go now?
no subject
[He's not ready. He's not ready for any of this, or to go anywhere, and he can tell easily enough when someone doesn't believe what he's saying... or, in this case, is just misunderstanding.
But he's already argued so much, and it's not working, and now there's a familiar knot of fear forming in his stomach at the prospect of saying any more.
Ginko's fingers curl tightly for a moment, then he nods. He closes the box and, after a moment of staring at her hand uncertainly, he reaches out and takes it.
He feels sick.]

Hey. It’ll be fine. Even if you do get sick, we have plenty of doctors here who can help. Look at this. [She moves her other arm into his line of sight, fanning out the fingers for him to see. At first glance, it looks identical to her other hand, but prolonged inspection reveals fine, artificial-looking marks delineating the joints.]
The doctors here gave me this after I lost my arm. Looks pretty convincing, huh? [It also has trouble registering temperature sometimes and has the inexplicable ability to grow plants, but Zam conveniently leaves that part out.] If they can help me, I’m sure they’ll be able to help you.

Doctors can't help with mushi.

What is “mushi” anyways? Some kind of disease?

[He hesitates. He even stops walking, staring down at the ground.
Until recently, the answer to that would have seemed like it should have been pretty straightforward. Mushi had always seemed to ruin everything for him; it was because of them that he could never stay anywhere, that people always got hurt around him. That he couldn't remember who he was to begin with.
But...]
...not really. They're necessary, just... sometimes they can cause problems, too.
