Unlike most people, he doesn't wear a uniform, the plants covering his body are all the clothes he really needs while on the ship. He has little interest in going back to Emiri for the time being, considering the last time he did that he got arrested and scared the crap out of Papyrus.
So he's just kind of minding his own business when he notices that there must be new arrivals. When he sees the kid in the hallway ahead of him, he is excited for approximately three seconds before he realizes what he's seeing.
Is that Ginko? As a kid?!
He's hard to mistake, in both appearance and mannerisms. The nymph looks like he was just about to say something to him before he crumples down, looking shocked. And then straight up wibbling.

...And then the green kid just kind of... crumples. And looks like he's about to cry.
Ginko stares at him in shock for a couple minutes, drawing back a little at first but not leaving. Then he takes an uncertain step forward, fiddling with his sleeve. "...Are you alright?"
Did he do something wrong? Did he somehow offend this plant person? He doesn't know, he doesn't know anything about plant people. Why is this happening.
no subject
"You don't remember me, right?" he asks between his fingers, looking up at the kid. He sounds heartbroken, despite himself.
Sometimes he forgot how much he missed everyone he'd left behind.
no subject
He's pretty sure he's never met this kid, but...
"...I don't remember a lot of stuff." He crouches down, resting his hands on his knees as he keeps studying Steven. "Do... you know me?"
no subject
Ginko had always seemed like such a fully formed person that Steven had momentarily forgotten that he'd apparently been a child amnesiac - he didn't even remember his parents or anything, did he? He suddenly feels totally awful for bringing that up. Most people didn't already have memory loss baggage going on.
His tail goes stiff with dread at the realization, his leaves raising on end. He startles.
"Wait, I mean - I'm sorry! I didn't mean it like that...I just..." He raises his hands helplessly. "You're...you're Ginko, right?"
no subject
"It's... fine?" He thinks it is, anyway.
Then he pauses.
"...Yeah. That's me."
no subject
"It's...it doesn't matter, it's not your fault. I just...knew a version of you and it's kind of a long story but you don't even know me, so..."
He scrubs at his face with his roots, closing his eyes and trying to brush this off. His his voice doesn't stop wobbling.
no subject
An awful thought occurs to him, and his eye widens fractionally. He still doesn't know what Steven meant about another version of him, but... "Did... what did I do...?"
no subject
"You didn't do anything! Not anything bad. You...You were my friend."
That didn't seem like a full summary of their dynamic, but it was close enough. He misses Ginko, and he misses Henry, and he misses Edward and Elsa and the other Crystal Gems. He's been trying not to think about it - focusing on how he's promised he's going to help them from the outside.
But it only feels like it's truly sunk in now.
no subject
That... doesn't make sense. He's almost forgotten the whole "different version" thing. His shoulders pull up to his ears. "How did... that happen?"
no subject
no subject
"...Are you sure that was me? Or... a different me." Because he's having trouble imagining that the person Steven is describing could be any version of him at all, given that he apparently not only managed to survive to adulthood, but was also capable of looking after a child.
"If the way it works is that strange, it could have been... someone else, maybe?" He's not even sure what his logic is here.
no subject
"I mean..." He shrugs, like he's trying to accommodate Ginko's feelings but isn't actually sure what those are. "He looked like you, had the same name, and...and I think had the same situation when he was little. He...kind of told me about it. A little."
no subject
"What... what did he tell you?"
Please let it not have been about the scamming thing. He's just gotten here, and as much as the idea of being trapped scares him, he isn't sure he wants people wanting him gone so soon.
no subject
"Um...that he lost his memory when he was little...so he didn't remember how he grew up exactly..."
He frowns.
"He said he grew up not really knowing where he came from or what happened to him."
no subject
He's not sure how to feel about the suggestion that he really never did find out what happened to him, but at least it's not a surprise.
