[closed] RAID LOG
Who: Those selected for Atarah’s retrieval mission
When: June 22nd
Where: Earth 91c, on the outskirts of Eastgate
What: Atarah’s mercenaries raid an Extinctionist hideout to take back… something.
Warnings: Possible violence
(OOC Note: To help you on this mission, Atarah has allowed an AI adviser of hers, named Alex, to accompany you. This adviser is stored on a handheld device and can provide support in the form of information and, if given physical access to a device, some hacking capabilities. They’re also known for being a foul-mouthed little shit. If you would like your character to call on them at any time, simply mention that they are pinging Alex in the comment header.)
Mission Start
[Nestled in the awkward space between Eastgate proper and the manufacturing district, it’s hard to imagine this would be anybody’s first choice in accommodations while on Earth 91c. It’s ostensibly a hotel, or is going to be one, at any rate. A sign out front reads “UNDER RENOVATION” and the building is surrounded by an orange ribbon fence separating it from its surroundings. A few uniformed humans mill about outside, waists slung with construction tools, and more movement can be glimpsed inside. The facade checks out well enough.
And yet, according to Atarah, these are the people who would destroy her kind if they could. They are the ones who stole what was hers. And what they have taken is somewhere inside that would-be hotel.
You need to get inside to be sure though. Are those men carrying construction tools or weapons? Perhaps you’ll notice a pattern to their seemingly random wanderings around the supposed construction site. And are those cameras you see dotting the building’s perimeter? A skilled infiltrator may be able to slip past such defenses undetected—though a more bloodthirsty approach may be just as effective.]
Mission-In-Progress
[Through either clean stealth or brute force, you managed to make your way inside. Now, the facade begins to crumble. There is no evidence of construction inside the building and those guards? Definitely armed. Maybe you’ve worked out a plan of action with your cohort(s) before you came inside, because right now you only have a moment to decide whether to dive for cover or fight before someone sees you coming.
If not? Hopefully you’re good at improvising because these guys are definitely big on shooting first and asking questions later.]
Mission End
[However you pulled it off, eventually, you’ll find what these people were trying so hard to protect. Fighting or sneaking your way deep enough into the building will eventually reveal a hidden entrance to a large basement, perhaps once used for storage, but now transformed into something more sinister. There are several screens and consoles on one end of the room, one showing a live feed from the cameras you saw outside. Against one of the walls is what looks like a large slab of steel and circuitry, about the size of a coffin, with a shallow concave carved into its front, large enough for an adult to stand in.
And in the center of the room, there is a Program, lying unresponsive on the floor. One might assume he was dead if it weren’t for the noise, a low, uneven beat like a skipping hard drive that seems to drift from the Program’s throat. He wears the remains of what appears to be a construction uniform, though the back of it has been torn open, revealing something resting between his shoulder blades. It resembles a flattened black hexagon, about four inches in diameter, and the underside of it glows where it makes contact with the Program’s skin.
This is what Atarah was after. And whatever it is, it’s clearly much more than just a symbol.]

Given he's not alone for this trip, he figures it's best to get to know them enough so he knows who not to shoot if things go pear-shaped. More often than not, they do, and when things get rough, the Exo tends to respond in kind. Being used to expecting to be shot at first, it probably won't be too surprising if he ends up shooting anything that moves that isn't on their side- but maybe that'll prove to be a good thing later on.
His Ghost might not be too crazy about interacting with this Alex AI, and given Cayde knows his Ghost can handle anything from hacking to overriding mechanisms and scanning for hostiles, the Exo will probably rely more on his partner. He'll leave the others to seek advice from Alex if need be.]
Mission Start
[Cayde's seen a lot worse, by far. A hotel, or even one that's being worked on is far classier than the places he's picked his way through. His Ghost hovers just above his shoulder, its angled plates twitching.]
I can't get a clear read on how many might be inside. There's too much interference, possibly from the structure itself if not this area.
Well, I'm sure we'll find out soon enough anyway.
[The Exo looks to the others that have been rounded up for this mission.]
So I'm usually all for the "barge in, guns blazing" tactic, but it'd probably be better not to draw too much attention right away. You guys got any preferences?
no subject
And then this place came along. The whole 'creator vs. created' thing hasn't exactly endeared him to this apparent future of Earth, but nobody cares about a clone's issues with that kind of stuff, right? He'd had a chance to do some really good fighting in the arena, and now he's actually got himself a nice big job rather than his usual stuff back on Thisavrou. And he's even working with a team.
This is more like it. He just has to not declare himself the leader.]
When it comes to doing things the sneaky way, I've always been one for infiltration through impersonation, which I doubt is going to be an easy option here. However...
[He takes the chance to dissolve into smoke, a thinned-out cloud hovering above the ground. Showoff. Despite the whole incorporeality thing, he still speaks.]
I've picked up a few tricks in the meantime. I might be able to scout ahead a bit before we start with the blazing guns.
no subject
Yeah, don't think we got the time to impersonate...
[His brow plate lifts as the man vanishes- or not quite vanishes, but it's an interesting trick. Even the Ghost's 'eye' seems to widen as it marvels.]
Fascinating!
Heh! Makes me miss my stealth cloak. I've got no objections to that plan, though. Anyone else? Anyone?
no subject
Still, it's best not to think about that. The money's good, and he's missed being on a real job like this. He may just be a normal guy compared to the others, but it's not like he and his brother haven't had their share of gunfights. And at least he has his grappling hook.]
Got a lot of guys down there...
[He observes, still looking through the binoculars.]
Definitely think sneaking in is the best route to go here. [He straightens, tucking the binoculars away in his pocket.] What's the plan though, we gonna take them out individually or divide and conquer? Guessing we don't have a map of the place, right?
no subject
[No reason to dwell on that now.]
There's always a back door, too. If it's a hotel... who's going to think twice about a human trying to check in?
[She throws a glance over her shoulder at the nearest visible human.]
Maybe our invisible friend tags along -- ducks away and gets the door open for us non-humans.
[Because out of the four of them? She and Cayde are the most clearly Not Human. And there's nothing they can do about that. Her head turns back to watching the hotel, flicking her mandibles against her jaw, like someone idly cracking their knuckles.]
We should probably be sure they don't have thermal scans.
no subject
[Playing the tourist is often a good method of deception, when there's precedent for it and you can't just act like you belong.]
Distract enough people, and taking them out one by one might be possible. Not sure if you all have a preference for lethal or non-lethal. [He might be joking. He sounds like he's joking. Maybe.
At any rate, he brings himself back into solid form for the time being, just to make the conversation maybe just a little easier until it's go time.]
As long as there's something like a grate or a crack under the door, I should be fine getting in to start. I... probably shouldn't turn up on any sort of scan like that in that state, but I admit I've never tried seeing how one sees me.
But I'm not averse to fighting every last one of them if need be.
no subject
Don't suppose Archie's got any ideas.
You mean Alex?
Oh. Right. Alex. -well, either way...
[Cayde snap-points at Vetra.]
Yeaaah teamwork! Okay, yeah. So. Smokey goes in for a quick sweep, this guy here plays lost tourist- [He thumbs at Sam.] Stuff happens and we get in.
There are those security cameras to worry about.
...hmm. If we take out guards, then we can expect reinforcements or a possible building lock-down. So if we sneak in, maybe we can lock them out and clean house as we need to.
no subject
[So he's not exactly saying no to that plan. It does seem like it could work, but getting shot again isn't exactly an experience he'd like to repeat. He just wants to make sure they're all on the same page in that regard.]
As for the cameras, there could be an electrical box or something inside somewhere. Cut the power, you can cut the security cameras and any alarms that might go off.
[Or hopefully they'll be long gone before reinforcements can come. He looks at Clyde, nodding to his Ghost.]
Can that thing handle taking the power out?
no subject
[There's more than a little bit of flat wryness to her voice. Honestly, she wouldn't mind doing it. Her power armor could take it. But that's going to draw too much attention. Way too much.]
Do you not have any kind of personal shielding with you?
[It seemed like a no-brainer, as far as her experience was concerned.]
If Ghost can do something about the power, I can keep a door covered on my own, if I've got to.
no subject
[Not always perfectly, of course, but hey, if it gets the job done...]
And there's nothing wrong with being the distraction. I promise, we aren't going to just bloody leave you there.
[Even if it meant a daring rescue or something. Unless things got really bad, but like hell he's going to tell anyone that.]
Anyway it sounds like we've got a good start to a plan hatched. Even if we need a plan B for the power, that should be one of the more simple things once we've got a good idea of where things are.
no subject
[The Ghost emits a snort.]
This "thing" can have a look, but I can't cut the power if it's not controlled by some sort of system, and to effectively do that I'd need to have access to the control panel. Perhaps once we get inside?
But I can see if I can cause a feedback loop temporarily on some of the cameras outside, long enough hopefully, for you all to do what you need to and slip in.
[Cayde nods at the others.]
Well, go see what you can do, Ghost. I'll cover you. Let me know when it's good for us to move.
[The Ghost sweeps its blue lens across them in a glance before "nodding", and it floats off higher, trying to find a good angle of approach. Then it'll set to work.
Cayde waits anxiously, tracking its movement through his rifle's scope before checking on the general movement of the guards at street level.]
Welp. If this don't work this could be the shortest mission ever.
-all right, Ghost's got it. Move in.
no subject
[When in potential danger, always go for the sarcasm. Sam shakes his head, both because he's not too happy about being the bait and in acceptance of his fate. Everyone did agree to watch his back at least.
As Ghost moves, Sam watches anxiously, looking over the guys down below, for potential covering if need be, and escape routes.]
All right, here goes nothing.
[Sam gives his companions a small nod in farewell before heading down to the front path. Once he's in the clear of the others he takes out a cigarette and lights it. If he's going to die here, at least he'll have one last smoke in his lungs.
He approaches tentatively, and as he comes into view of the guards he waves.]
Uh--excuse me, you guys in business? I've been traveling all day and could use a nice place to stay for the night, maybe a nice cold beer--
[Oh, yeah those are definitely guns. Sam puts his hands up in surrender when one of the guards points one at him, yelling at him to move along.]
Jesus, you treat all your potential guests like this? Look just--just take an easy all right? I'm just looking for a place to stay.

Mission In-Progress
[It'll probably be inevitable that there'll be a shoot out at some point. And there are a lot of guards around here.
Oh! But this makes it so much easier! People shooting at you? Just like back home! If he's supposed to only incapacitate, someone better tell him now. With diplomacy thrown out the window, the Exo's firing back, hand bouncing off the hammer of his hand cannon as he fires off accurate shots in rapid succession. He might even seem to be enjoying himself. Just a little.]
Mission End
...what the hell is all this..?
[The Exo's low murmur doesn't hide his evident disgust as they venture into the lower levels of the building. Even his Ghost looks about cautiously as they make way, drifting towards the consoles. It wouldn't be difficult to fix the cameras for their exit when they get to it, at least. Drifting along, it studies and scans the coffin-sized object, recalling and wondering if it had the same purpose as the ones they had seen in the employee's room of The Gardens.
There's an exclamation from Cayde, and the Ghost "blinks" before swiveling about to float off in his direction to see what all else has been found.]
Oh my...
[Cayde looks to the others of their little team before kneeling beside the prone Program. His eyes narrow as he looks at the thing that's been set against the AI's back.]
...you hearing that? Ghost-
Yes, I'm picking up the sound as well. It's not unlike the underlying tone that accompanied Calla's audio.
[If an Exo could frown... But he looks displeased at the implications as it is. Again he looks to their companions.]
Think that's what Atarah's after?
Ghost, run a scan, will you?
Right. I suppose there's no sense in worrying about the rules now.
[Its little angles rotating and twitching in something of a shrug, the Ghost begins to circle the Program on the ground, a thin blue light beaming from its lens, sweeping over body and device, repeating from different angles.]
end
[She's busy keeping the door covered. Just in case someone decides to break their way in. Or plays hero. Her power armor is online, covering her in a glowing layer of holographic armor.]
[Vetra glances back toward where Cayde is examining the Program, but doesn't take her gun off the doorway.]
Can we get it off them?
no subject
[The Ghost ceases its scanning, glancing towards the others.]
That's based on very limited evidence, but I think it'd be a fair bet to make, all things considered. Although this is most strange...
I really can't get a good read on it, and I don't think that a direct interface would be advisable under the circumstances. But we are dealing with physical code, basically. It reminds me a bit of Vex technology, at least in that way.
[Cayde makes a face.]
Glad we're not dealing with Vex either way, but let's cut to the chase as per the lady's question- removable?
I can only assume it's possible, but I can't say what the affects would be. The Program itself is running at minimal power levels, the most energy concentrated around the area where the device is attached...but I'm not picking up any fluctuation or transference between them.
no subject
[She's mostly grumbling to herself, with no real heat to the words. Just checks the hallway for the twentieth time in the last five minutes.]
Someone better figure out what to do with it, before we get party crashers on our case.
[Not to mention the device they came here for. But she figures that much goes without saying.]
no subject
[Nothing that the Ghost had reported made sense, but if there truly is any connection to the altered Programs, Cayde's not so sure how good of an idea it is for anyone- even Atarah- to get their hands on it.
...which is why he's casually bringing up his hand cannon, thumbing back the hammer with his finger on the trigger as he takes aim at the device.]
Cayde?
