He had been turning toward Sans as he spoke, more to give him the full force of his exasperation at stopping already, but then he caught the same view that had stopped his brother.
A vast array of stars sparkling in the largest, darkest field either of them had ever seen, and looming close, a strange planet.
Lacking the experience or perspective to fully grasp what he was looking at, he turned to Sans with questions written all over his face. Was it a sky? Was it dangerous? What did it all mean?

And now here he was again, staring into a wholly different inky blackness. One that under other circumstances, would fill most monsters to the brim with hope. Monsters were weird, after all. No matter how far they strayed from childhood, the stories of wishing on stars never quite lost their appeal.
Finally letting his grip slip on Papyrus's scarf, Sans let his hand fall down to his side. Unknowingly, he began clenching his fist.
Sans didn't have answers for Papyrus.
Not quite yet.
He needed a minute.

So he fell silent and stepped up, joining Sans by the window and admiring the view. Even if what exactly he was looking at hadn't clicked yet, it was breathtaking.

"Well, heh." Sans chuckled, thinly. "They did say we were in space, after all. Guess I shouldn't be surprised."

"It's a space ship, Pap." He squinted up at his brother, equal parts fond and bemused. "The only fish you're going to see out there are starfish."
A beat.
"'Cuz those are stars."

He didn't even bother gracing that terrible pun with the usual show of annoyance.

While they may have traded one prison for another, this was a definite improvement over the cramped cave they called home. Papyrus spent so much time dreaming of freedom, so much time planning for the surface, and now that they were this close, well. In Sans's opinion, his brother was shining far brighter than any of the stars outside.
"Well? What do you think?"

When he finally got his fill of the view (for now) he turned back to Sans, still emotional as his eyesockets brimmed with inexplicable tears.
"How did we get free? And where are all the others??"
no subject
How could anyone kill him?
"I, uh... I dunno, man." He finally turned back to the glass, smile dimming slightly. The others. Probably long gone now, if Sans had to guess. Swallowed up by the demonic child's rage and mercilessness. Sans and Papyrus were spared, but if the others weren't here already...
"They'll probably show up in the next few days." Sans knew so little of this place and how it worked, that hell. Maybe he wasn't as much of a liar as he felt like. "Just gotta be patient, that's all."
no subject
He grinned at Sans and nodded eagerly. "Of course! If we made it here, then it's only a matter of time before the others find the way!"

He probably deserved better. He definitely deserved better. But unfortunately for them both, Sans was all he had.
"C'mon." Sans nudged, after a few more minutes of awed stargazing. "There's a whole ship to explore. Let's get to it."
It was one of the few times in their lives that Sans was the one pushing his baby brother to get moving, but hey. Guilt could be a pretty powerful motivator.
